Engine and transmission

Stylish and sleek aesthetic meets a guttural 4.0L V8 Biturbo churning out an athletic 463 hp and 516 lb.-ft of torque. This is married to a 9-speed automatic transmission, powering the rear-wheels of the soft-top. Coming with different driving modes like – Eco, Comfort, Sport or sport+ modes, the powertrain switches attitude on different moods with ease. Driving this Cabriolet with the soft-top down is pure joy, on any driving mode for that matter.

Comfort mode is more relaxed and suited for cruising around (let’s say this is more a Grandpa mode). Switch to Sport modes and the ride gets firm, while the gas pedal answers with powerful performance infused with a raw growl from the V8, loud exhaust pops, and rapidly smooth gear shifts. The 9-speed automatic gearbox shifts have no clunk or lag, being buttery smooth irrespective of driving modes.

A look at the rest of the field shows the Cabriolet placing itself behind, but hover your eyes towards the pricing and all is forgiven. At $231,800, the Bentley Continental GT V8 S Convertible has the most powerful powertrain while the Aston Martin Volante, costing 15 grand less, almost goes head-to-head behind it. The BMW 650i xDrive Convertible costs 30 grand less than the 3-silver starred roadster and also offers the least powerful, yet modest, powertrain.

Acceleration

Put a V8 in a 4802lbs cabriolet which pumps 516 lb.-ft of torque and guess what happens next? You snap past 0-60 mph in 4.5sec, and the quarter mile in 12.8s, making the S 560 Cabriolet an impressive craft of machinery.

Effortless performance still does not get the Mercedes ahead of its competitors; the Aston Martin zips past 0-60 in 4.1s and the quarter mile by 12.3s, whereas the BMW with less power takes 4.3sec but drives beside the Silver Arrow.

Marry luxury and elegance with precision engineering down to the smallest bolt, and you get the S-Class 560 Cabriolet. Adjusting to the road conditions, the AirMatic suspension system glides the cabriolet with comfort and ease. Prompt and smooth sum up the steering input, while corners and heavy maneuvering have minimal body roll. As with performance, different driving modes can be altered with to firm the ride or otherwise.

Setting down or opening the rooftop takes around 20-seconds, and can be done at speeds up to 31 mph, with almost no sound while the operation is taking place. Noise cancellation is effortlessly done by the three-layered cloth tops.

Braking

As with the roadsters performance, the braking system on the cabriolet works just as effortlessly. For a car this size, the braking is quite impressive. While testing, the safety Brake Assist system worked like a charm, allowing quicker and safer stops. Amongst the rest of the field, the Cabriolet is fitted with smallest rotor on both, the front and rear brakes.

Taking a curve exposes the car’s heavy-duty but the superb balance of the overall built manages to compensate that impression. Seating and Comfort

Seating 4, the S 560 is exceptionally comfortable in front, with good legroom and headspace, but think twice before sitting in the back. Now Cabriolet’s are generally not meant for rear seating but, rather disappointingly, as this car bears the S-class badge, does nothing to rectify that feeling. The let-down is further fuelled when you think of how long this car measures, and bears a long wheelbase as well.

Cargo volume

Long car? Check. Roomy interior? So-so. Generous boot space? Mercedes politely declines. Driving with the top down, the Cabriolet offers 8.8 cube feet of cargo volume whereas its English rival, Bentley Continental, stands a tad higher at 9.1 cube feet. The Volante has the least space in the trunk, and the Beemer has a decent 10.6 cube feet.

Looking at just the pricing, you’d feel like giving the English marquee a miss. Costing a mammoth $216,495, you wouldn’t want to mess with James Bond here; he’s way more muscular, athletic, and that V8 from AMG blows the S 560 under water. But does he exude the luxury and elegance seen in his German rival? Well, no. Volante is more race, guns and bang, whereas the S 560 is more a luxury cruiser which can give be sporty, albeit not to the Volante’s caliber.

Have two hundred thousand dollars to spare? The Aston Martin Volante it is then.

2018 Bentley Continental V8 S Convertible

Starting at $231,800, more than a hundred grand than the roadster from Stuttgart, the Bentley Continental V8 S Convertible is well equipped with premium and top-notch features and materials. Like the S 560, the Bentley is a mix of sport and luxury convertible. Although it drives and performs better than the Cabriolet, it does not come with standard safety features made convenient by the German marquee.

Between this and the Mercedes stand many similarities, and they’re all based on how much you’re ready to shell out.

2018 BMW 650i xDrive Convertible

As always, there cannot be a day when you don’t compare these two greats; to buy the BMW 650i, you will need $101,300 and that is thirty grand less than its German neighbor. Specced similarly but a tad lesser powerful, the Beemer tunes itself to the bells and whistles to the S 560, but it just doesn’t quite seem to match it in many aspects. Sure, it has got better boot space, almost equal power performance, plush and comfortable seating in front, and a wide range of luxury features, but it just doesn’t quite excite as much as the Mercedes.

If you have enough to get the Beemer, an investment of 30 grand more will get you something a whole lot better. The S 560 has the upper edge on this one.

Final Verdict

Some cars fall short on few aspects and it sure does pinch you, while others are just so good that you wouldn’t mind overlooking them. The S 560 Cabriolet is a big yes for it is a pleasure to drive, looks gorgeous and comes with a wide range of opulent features. If you’re a convertible enthusiast, the S 560 is definitely worth considering.

On the other hand, if you’ve made up your choice, and if it isn’t the Merc? Go back, give this car a test drive. For those who know it’s the Benz, laudable choice indeed. Put down the roof, wear your sunglasses and enjoy the wind in your face in this plush and super luxurious Cabriolet!
