2018 Porsche 911 Targa 4 Review, Ratings, Specs, and Prices

The 911 targa was borne out of a need to adhere to the regulatory norms and soon became a style icon. While the 993 911, the 996 911, and the 997 911 shunned the classic Targa look for just a panoramic glass sunroof, the 991 911 marked the return of the classic Targa. The 2018 Porsche 911 Targa 4 is a carryover.

Even though the 911 Cabriolet provides a better open air driving experience, it arguably lacks the style – the word that actually defines the targa with its polished metal roll bar spanning the width of the cabin. Performance wise, it’s not much different than the standard 911 sharing same 370 hp 3.0L Boxer-6.

The Targa 4 is not the most powerful car in the segment. In fact, its rivals have a much more capable engine. The 911 Carrera which is powered by the same engine produces the same performance figures while the AMG-GT Roadster and Audi R8 Spyder are powered by a much larger and powerful engine.

Acceleration

The Porsche 911 Targa 4 is powerful that the car is able to cross the 60 mph from a standstill in just 4.5 seconds. However, this is not the most powerful car among its rivals and that is okay

It is the 532 HP Audi R8 Spyder that is quickest among its rivals with a 0 – 60 mph mark of 3.5 seconds. The R8 has a massive 5.2 L V10 engine that is much more powerful than the AMG-GT Roadster and the Porsches.

Ride & Handling

There is a bit of body roll while driving around corners in the normal mode. There is also a little less precision to the initial steering response. You won’t feel the body roll and steering response in the Sports mode. The Targa 4 handles and steers well than most of its rivals and has a good amount of grip.

The Targa 4, Carrera Cabriolet, AMG-GT Roadster and the R8 Spyder handles excellently. These machines are made to perform well on racetracks and also to be driven on normal roads.

Braking

There is a 4 piston Aluminum Monobloc fixed calipers on the front and rear. All wheels have 13-inch disc brakes as standard. Carbon Composite brakes are available as an option for the Targa 4 and Targa 4S.

2018 Porsche 911 Targa 4 Fuel Economy

“Despite a classic look, the Porsche 911 manages modern fuel-economy ratings.” – Carconnection

The 911 Targa 4 has a city mileage of 19 mpg and a highway mileage of 28 mpg. Considering the fact that this car is a 6 cylinder as opposed to its rivals, the 911 Targa offers the best mileage among its rivals. But this is a sports car, nobody buys a sports car overlooking mileage.

MPG (combined) 22 23 18 17

From the size of the engine, it is obvious that the R8 is the least fuel-efficient car and then comes the AMG-GT Roadster. But the engines on these cars produce a hell lot of power which makes it justifiable for the low mpg figures.

2018 Porsche 911 Targa 4 Head to Head Comparison

Porsche Targa 4 vs Porsche Carrera Cabriolet

The Targa 4 and Carrera Cabriolet is from the same manufacturer and has the same engine on both. The $7000 less expensive Carrera is a RWD car whereas the Targa 4 is AWD. Both the cars have a seating capacity of 4 and both the cars are 911s.

Porsche Targa 4 vs Mercedes AMG-GT Roadster

The AMG-GT Roadster is available at the price of Targa 4S. The AMG is much more powerful, has a larger engine and offers more cabin space though it is a two-seater.

Porsche Targa 4 vs Audi R8 Spyder

The Targa 4 is nowhere near the Audi R8. The much expensive R8 beats the Targa 4 at almost everything from engine size, power, handling, cabin space and what not. The R8 Spyder is one hell of a car and the Targa 4 is nowhere near to be compared to that massive V10 beast.

2018 Porsche 911 Targa 4 Final Verdict

The Targa 4 is a 911, it has the heritage and driving dynamics of a Porsche 911. It features an all-wheel drive and a more powerful motor on the Targa 4S variant. The car is fun to drive and has a lot of Porsche’s character to it.

Though the Targa 4S is priced as same as the AMG-GT Roadster, it is nowhere near to the performance that the modern cars like the AMG or R8 have to offer. So, if you want sheer performance, go for the AMG or R8. On the other hand, if you want a car that has 4 seats, has a heritage and is also good on road and track, then the 911 Targa is the car for you.
