Detailed Review

Luxury is something everyone desires, but that comes at a cost. However, that is not the case with the new 3 row SUV, the Acura MDX, which is a rare mixture of luxury and economy. This factor is enough to say that this car is here to stay and compete with the much more established Infiniti QX60, the Lexus RX 450H and the Toyota Highlander.

The Acura offers long distance ride comfort, with a top speed of 206 mph. It does not have a lot of flaws, and easily scores above its rivals in various parameters.1`

Apart from this, the MDX boasts dozens of luxury features like premium leather upholstery and the nicely laid out dash. The DRLs are the best addition in this variant.

We Recommend

The Acura MDX, with its standard trim, offers almost everything that its rivals provide in almost the same price range. With all these features, in this price range, with such a price range, this car should be on everyone's list.

2017 Acura MDX hybrid SUV Engine

The 3.5-liter 290-horsepower V6, nine-speed automatic transmission and optional Super-Handling All-Wheel Drive are key factors in making the MDX one of the most confident midsize SUVs to drive. It's not exciting, but it is effortlessly capable- Edmunds

Engine and Transmission

The 2017 Acura MDX Hybrid is powered by a 3.0 Liter V-6 turbocharged Engine that produces 321 hp at 6300 rpm and 289 lb-ft of torque at 5000 rpm. The new MDX also comes equipped with a 7-speed automatic transmission as standard. The engine feels very smooth and produces a little audible sound, which feels like a treat to drive on highways.

All the rivals are pretty much different in this regard. However, the Acura does the best when the overall package is taken into account wherein all the power outputs and prices are taken into consideration.

Acceleration

The Acura is always known for its fast acceleration and this is something where the 2017 MDX does not disappoint as it reaches 60 mph in just 6.2 sec, easily the best here. The quarter mile figures are somewhat proportional too.

The RX 450h gives the Acura a tough fight here with close figures. Although, the Toyota and the Infiniti are somewhat off the radar and that too by a big margin here.

Handling and Steering

The Acura does not offer the fancy air suspension offered by the considerably more expensive competitors. However, its ride quality is supple within the city and on the highway. But the Acura really impresses with its handling. The SH-AWD is a unique mechanical torque vectoring system, which does immaculately well especially on the sharp turns.

Braking

The 2017 Acura MDX Hybrid has the braking to match its acceleration, Having said that, the fact is that the others have done much better though. The large brakes are pretty supple and are perfect though.

2017 Acura MDX hybrid SUV Fuel Economy

All thanks to its efficient motor and hybrid system, the 2017 Acura MDX Hybrid boasts an impressive mileage of 26 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway. Due to its relatively smaller engine than two of its rivals, the MDX also boasts the highest combined fuel efficiency figure of 27 mpg.

All the rivals offer a similar number here but the Lexus leads the race with a combined figure of 30 mpg. And with a closely placed combined values of the other three cars, one can clearly see how closely fought this parameter is.

2017 Acura MDX hybrid SUV Interior

The MDX is spacious and versatile for the midsize luxury segment, and though its third row is tight, it's more usable than most. Still, mainstream models such as the mechanically related Honda Pilot are even more practical- Edmunds

Seating and Comfort

The 2017 Acura MDX Hybrid is a 3 row SUV which accommodates 7 people. It provides heated and cooled seats along with a well-crafted interior which offers a plush and comfortable experience. The rear passenger seats are also electrically powered. It also houses the driver- seat memory system settings, which shifts the seats as per the preference of the driver beforehand.

Infotainment

The Acura Infotainment system is actually disappointment considering its stature and the price it commands. It could have been better in terms of user interaction and advanced features and this places it a behind its competitors. However, it does have basic infotainment features like:

  • AM/FM Stereo
  • Auxiliary Audio Input
  • CD Player
  • MP3 Player
  • Satellite Radio

Cargo

The 2017 Acura MDX offers a good amount of cargo capacity amongst its competitors. The trunk of this Acura can easily hold a good amount of luggage in it. All thanks to its wide opening with a flat surface, the trunk feels is good for inserting and removing those big and heavy bags. The RX 450H stands at the end with the lowest boot capacity of 55.9 cu.ft.

Towing Capacity

The towing capacity is not yet known for the MDX SUV, however, looking at the rivals it is expected to be following similar lines as well.

Dimension and Weight

With the introduction of the new MDX Hybrid, Acura adds a fresh touch to the body of this graceful looking SUV and places its offering in a designing segment where the Europeans have a stronghold. The Japanese designed Acura is not only good looking, but also looks graceful yet masculine. And the DRLs present on it enhance the overall look of this SUV. The lightest of them all in terms of weight, this Acura does have a decent ground clearance too. At 7.3 inches above the ground, this may be about an inch less than the best here, but these figures are quite refreshing.

2017 Acura MDX hybrid SUV Competition

Acura MDX Hybrid v/s Infiniti QX60

The Infiniti is of no match for the Acura. Its smaller engine churns out a decent amount of power but still falls behind its competitors. The acceleration follows a similar regard. While, on the other hand, in terms of space, performance, and luxury the Acura is much better. The Infiniti though has a minutely better passenger volume and space on the inside, but overall, the Acura stands as the winner here.

Acura MDX Hybrid v/s Lexus RX 450 H

The fight between the Lexus and Acura goes right down to the wire. Both generate almost equal figures in the engine capacity and the fuel economy. The cargo capacity is where the Acura stands as a clear winner. The RX 450H, on the other hand, offers a smaller boot than its competitor and thus stands behind the former. While the Lexus offers an impressive and comfortable interior, the luxury of the MDX makes the RX 450H take a step back here.

Acura MDX Hybrid v/s Toyota Highlander

Again, like in the above case, the Highlander despite having a much bigger engine manages just about equal figures of power and torque to that of the Acura. It even manages to match the Acura for a few other parameters as well. However, its fuel-thirsty engine and the lack of space in the rear is a big turn off, making the Acura MDX the winner

2017 Acura MDX hybrid SUV Final Verdict

The 2017 Acura MDX Hybrid is a 7 seater value for money SUV that can envy many. And quite deservingly, pips the Toyota Highlander and the Infiniti QX60 easily under various parameters. However, its competition is with the Lexus RX 450H. Both these cars go head to head and come out equal in almost all the parameters, with the engine capacity, fuel economy and the pick up being a few. One decisive factor is the luxury on offer and the Acura doesn't disappoint here and thus scores full marks here. And just on the basis of the comfort and luxury on offer, the 2017 Acura MDX Hybrid wins this comparison hands down.
