Acura RDX is the luxury personification of Honda's iconic CR-V. For the luxury compact SUV segment, Acura introduced the RDX in 2007. The brand kept it simple with a 4 cylinder engine, still, the power output was too much for an SUV of this size. It was equipped with top-notch cabin features and comfort levels. When introduced, the RDX was a one-of-a-kind SUV.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

The 2012 Acura RDX is a well thought SUV with proper entertainment, comfort, technology, and performance. It has a base price of $32,895 with 2 trim levels. The well-equipped RDX can also be opted with an AWD system as well. With such a package, it competes with high-end luxury brands such as the BMW X3, Volvo XC60, and the Audi Q5.

Features
7.5/10

As the base trim is decently equipped, Acura doesn't bother to offer a fleet of trim levels. The lineup is limited to two trims. With a price tag of $32,895, the 2012 Acura RDX is an affordable luxury SUV. Even the Technology trim won't cost you more than $35,999. The base package offers 18-inch alloys, leather upholstery, dual-zone air-conditioning, a moonroof, and a central information display. The Technology trim gets a more premium interior and exterior design, where you get satellite navigation and a rearview camera for your convenience.

We Recommend

If you want a value-for-money luxury compact SUV, then the Acura RDX in its base trim is good enough for you. It is packed with a powerful 4-cylinder engine, leather upholstery, and other comfort and convenience features. We have Xenon high-intensity headlamps as standard. You can also get the AWD system, still, it won't cost you more than $34,895.

Engine and Performance
8.1/10

The 2012 Acura RDX gets a 2.3L Turbo four-cylinder engine which is kind of odd for the segment. Still, you have 240 horses roaring under the hood at 6,000 RPM. It outputs 260 lb-ft of torque at 4,500 RPM. The 5-Speed automatic transmission could have had a better response. With a standard FWD drivetrain, you can avail the AWD for off-road performance.

The Acura RDX ain't that bad on a straight path as it can do a 0-60 MPH run in just 6.4 seconds. The quarter-mile sprint takes 14.8 seconds, where it has a top speed of 140 MPH. When equipped with the AWD system, the 2012 RDX may not deliver similar agility. Still, it does depict satisfactory off-roading behavior. The SUV is priced at $32,895, making it the cheapest option in the competition.

Being the most affordable SUV, the Acura RDX gives proper competition to its rivals with its 240 hp 4-cylinder engine. The BMW X3 is the most powerful SUV with its 258 hp Inline-6. The Volvo XC60 takes the second spot and is the closest rival to the RDX. With an underpowered 4-cylinder engine, the Audi Q5 sits at the bottom. All the rivals offer a standard AWD system, whereas it is optional with the Acura.

Fuel Economy
6.0/10

The 2012 Acura RDX has good enough fuel economy with its i-VTEC engine. The 240 hp 2.3L turbo I-4 returns 19 MPG in the city, 24 MPG on the highway, and a combined 21 MPG. The 18.0-gallon tank ensures a decent range as you have a city and highway range of 342 and 432 miles, respectively. With the AWD system, you'll have to settle with a low economy.

As compared to the rivals, the Acura RDX fares well. However, the underpowered Audi Q5 takes the lead with its 4-cylinder engine. With its Inline-6, the BMW X3 bags second place. Volvo is the last one in the league with its poor economy. Rivals are offering this economy with their standard AWD. When the RDX gets the AWD, its economy is as good as the XC60.

Interior
8.1/10

The 2012 Acura RDX is no less than its high-end rivals. The luxury is not limited to design as we get premium quality materials all over the cabin. You have two interior options, namely Ebony and Taupe that live up the interior with a lavish ambiance. The aluminum garnish adds style to the cabin's ergonomics. We have a sloping dashboard design with 3 massive gauges for the instrument cluster. The triple-spoke leather steering comes with numerous controls. To operate in the dark, all the controls are illuminated with LEDs. In between the instrument panel, we get 2 small AC vents, whereas the music system sits below.

To keep you comfortable, the RDX comes standard with heated leather sports seats, with a 1-way power driver, 4-way passenger, driver lumbar, and driver memory settings. At the rear, you have a 60/40 split bench seat with a foldable seat back and a center armrest. Along with that, the cabin is equipped with range-topping convenience with dual-zone air-conditioning, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, 2 12V power outlets, ambient lighting, tilt and telescopic steering, and a power moonroof.

With a seating capacity of up to 5 people, the Acura RDX isn't the most spacious SUV. Rivals such as BMW X3 and the Volvo XC60 have decent seating space for you with better headroom and legroom. However, the Acura has the widest seats with best-in class shoulder room. In terms of cargo space, the Volvo XC60 is the clear winner. Even the Audi Q5 offers better cargo capacity. The trunk space is not limited to 27.8 cubic feet as you can fold down the rear bench seat to get a maximum cargo capacity of 60.6 cubic feet. Standout interior features include:

  • Leather upholstery
  • Heated sport bucket seats
  • Illuminated controls
  • Dual-zone air-conditioning
  • Tilt and telescopic leather steering

How intuitive is the 2012 Acura RDX's Infotainment unit?

The 2012 Acura RDX has a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment display that sits at the perfect center of the dash. Most of the entertainment features available are offered as standard. You get a Bluetooth handsfree link for your mobile devices, Bluetooth audio connectivity, USB tethering, and an AM/FM radio for you.

With that, you also have a 6-disc in-dash CD changer to listen to your favorite beats. The XM satellite radio is offered with a 3-month subscription. There's a standard 4 speaker audio system, whereas the Technology trim gets a 10-speaker ELS Surround sound system with Dolby Pro Logic II. For travel, you have a satellite navigation system as well. Standout infotainment features include:

  • Bluetooth hands-free link
  • 6-disc CD changer
  • XM satellite radio
  • ELS surround sound speakers
  • Satellite navigation system
Exterior
8.0/10

Based on the Honda CR-V, the 2012 Acura RDX will impress you with its premium styling. It is nothing like the big boys from Germany, still, the Japanese marque has its class. You can choose from a wide range of colors, where the Chianti Red looks mesmerizing. Moreover, the whole exterior is appointed with chrome accents. The humble front fascia of the RDX has a massive windshield and a chrome-plated grille which accompanies the front diffuser. To light up the road, we have high-intensity headlamps with DRLs and chrome surround fog lamps.

From the side, the RDX has muscular doors with chrome-trimmed handles. The pop-out side mirrors make it wider. The RDX looks sporty from the back with a body-colored rear window spoiler, sporty tail lamps, and chrome rear grille. Below that, we have a blacked-out bumper with dual chrome tip exhausts. The all-season tires are wrapped around 18-inch 10-spoke aluminum-alloy wheels. The wide tracks ensure better handling.

The Acura RDX is the lightest SUV in its segment. It weighs 300 lbs lower than all of its rivals. In terms of length and size, it is comparatively similar to the other SUVs. However, it rides lower with its 6.3-inch ground clearance, which is the lowest in the competition. With its 104.3 inches of wheelbase, the 2012 RDX offers a great balance and driving dynamics. Standout exterior features include:

  • High-intensity headlamps with DRLs
  • Chrome exterior accents
  • Fog lamps
  • Rear window spoiler
  • Sporty tail lamps
  • 18-inch 10-spoke aluminum-alloy wheels
Safety
8.0/10

The 2012 Acura RDX gets its safety from Honda's ACE structure. The structure is specially constructed with high-strength steel powered by impact-absorbing zones that disperses collision forces away from the cabin. In terms of rigidity and balance, the ACE structure of the RDX is amazing. In IIHS crash tests, it has scored Good ratings if we keep aside its roof strength.

Acura has properly equipped the RDX with safety inside the cabin. You have dual-stage airbags and side curtain airbags with a rollover sensor. The 3-point seat belts come with pretensioners to keep you safe in your seats. Other than that, we have brake assistance, electronic brake-force distribution, tire pressure monitoring, and a rearview camera. Standout safety features include:

  • Advanced compatibility engineering
  • Dual-stage airbags
  • Electronic brake-force distribution
  • Tire pressure monitoring
  • Rearview camera
Final Verdict

With the RDX, Acura is offering a sensible package at a very good price. It is one of the best options in the segment with its leading driving experience, handling, safety, and comfort. To keep you entertained, there's plenty on offer for you. Even the base trim is overly equipped for the price range it is offered in. Yet, the Technology trim brings in better tech. With its rising popularity, Acura will be introducing the second generation of the RDX soon. It might not look like one, but it drives like a sporty SUV.
