Crossovers can do it all. From hauling people and cargo, to taking small trips across the city or getting over big obstacles or muddy trails in the countryside. With a price that is much lower than the refined and sophisticated German crossovers, Acura brings you the RDX. It comes with an overdose of technology, a long list of standard features, an intuitive drive experience, excellent build quality, premium upscale interior, making it a better alternative than some pricey crossovers.

Overall Rating

The 2022 Acura RDX is part of the third-generation RDX which received a major update in the year 2019. The 2022 model still has the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine as standard which puts out 272-horsepower and is paired with a ten-speed automatic transmission, with an available all-wheel-drive system. It has generous cargo capacity and a roomy and premium cabin making the interior of the RDX a pleasant place to be in. It stands against the expensive German alternatives like the BMW X3, Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class, and Audi Q5 all of which might just be a tad bit more luxurious. But they cost a lot more than the Acura which makes the RDX better value for money than the rest.

We Recommend

The Technology trim seems quite attractive to us. It adds some crucial safety features as well as comfort features and styling elements which makes it quite impressive for the price.

Price

The 2022 Acura RDX comes in one trim, with a lot of optional packages. The price of the base variant with the FWD drivetrain is expected to be around $40,000 and the SH-AWD will be somewhere around $42,000.

Release Date

The 2022 Acura RDX is expected to roll out into the dealerships somewhere around the summer of 2021 based on the previous year's schedules. Acura has not yet officially announced anything regarding the release date of the 2022 RDX or its pricing.

2022 Acura RDX Engine and Performance

The 2022 RDX is expected to come with a single-engine option with a choice of either FWD drivetrain or Acura’s own Super-Handling All-Wheel Drive drivetrain. The engine on offer is a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that gives out 272-horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque. The engine is mated to a ten-speed automatic transmission. RDX takes about 6.5 seconds to reach a speed of 60mph from a standstill. It offers a towing capacity of about 1,500 pounds which is less than most other competitors.

2022 Acura RDX SUV in action

Rivals on the other hand offer towing capacities of up 4,000 pounds. While Acura cars have been receiving the Type S treatment, it is doubtful if the RDX will ever receive one in the near future. Moreover, there is also a possibility of a new hybrid powertrain in the cards.

Acura might use the same small 2.0-liter inline-4 engine in the 2022 RDX but it puts out the most amount of power and torque figures making it the most powerful in the segment. Rivals also have performance versions that come with more power than the Acura. That being said the RDX in any way does not feel underpowered in any manner and is equally fun to drive.

2022 Acura RDX Fuel Economy

6.0/10

Japanese cars are known for their reliability and fuel-efficient engine, and the RDX is not an exception. Acura is the sub-brand of Honda, which in turn makes one of the most fuel-efficient cars out there. With the FWD drivetrain equipped, the 2022 RDX is expected to return 22 MPG in the city, 28 MPG on the highway, and 24 MPG in combined driving conditions. When you equip it with the SH-AWD drivetrain the MPG figures fall slightly to 21 MPG for the city, 26 MPG for highway, 23 MPG for the combined cycle. The fuel tank in the RDX is 17 gallons which is smaller than most of the rivals in the segment.

The RDX manages a fair fuel economy for its class, but the BMW X3 excels with slightly better results. The overall range is the highest in the XC60 as it has the largest fuel tank.

2022 Acura RDX Interior

7.0/10

Inside the Acura, you will find that it has one of the most sporty interiors of any crossover. It has a touchpad controller to manage the functions of the infotainment system. The touchpad is placed just below the buttons for the electronic gear selector. The build quality of the cabin is sublime, but the rivals like BMW and Audi use better and more expensive materials inside the cabin. But then you also pay a lot for those, and for the price of the Acura, the cabin is still one of the best to be in.

Cabin space is quite good in the RDX as both the front and rear passengers get enough legroom and headroom. It can seat four or five people easily making it ideal for intercity drives. The cargo bay of the RDX offers 29.5 cubic feet of space as standard. The rear seat is a 60/40 split-folding rear seat which further extended the cargo space to 58.9 cubic feet. Underfloor cargo storage is also present which makes it even more practical and increases the storage space further.

The overall cabin space is most in the RDX with better legroom in both rows. The standard cargo space available in the RDX and XC60 are the best; Volvo has just 0.2 cubic feet more space than the Acura which is negligible in the real world.

2022 Acura RDX Exterior

7.0/10

The RDX is one of the most handsome crossovers out there today. It has some distinctive design features and also gives it a distinct look that makes it easily recognizable. The trapezoidal front grille and Jewel-Eye headlights make the front of the RDX standard apart from almost every other crossover. It is one of the most futuristic-looking crossovers. Every RDX comes with features like a panoramic moonroof, LED tail lights, and a tailgate spoiler, with dual exhaust outlets, which are given an, even more, sportier look with the optional A-spec package. As a part of the mid-cycle refresh, 2022 RDX is expected to come with new front and rear fascias that make it more modern and sharp looking. Moreover, recent spy shots revealed that the 2022 model year sports square-shaped exhaust tips instead of round ones.

The RDX is the lightest which makes it sharper to drive and offers better performance. When it comes to off-roading, XC60 might be more capable than the rest thanks to the 8.5 inches of ground clearance.

2022 Acura RDX Safety

8.0/10

The RDX also has a load of safety features and driver aids. The 2022 model has not been tested by either NHTSA or IIHS. However, the 2021 model has scored a full 5-star rating from NHTSA and IIHS gave the 2020 version the Top Safety Pick+ title. These scores are valid as the 2022 model belongs to the same generation without any significant updates. Standard features like airbags, traction control, stability control are all present in RDX. Other advanced driver assistance features include adaptive cruise control, low-speed follow, lane-keep assist, lane departure warning, and forward-collision warning, head-up display, head-up warning, blind-spot monitoring, and rear-cross traffic alert.

2022 Acura RDX vs 2021 BMW X3

The German crossover offers slightly better fuel efficiency than the RDX and is more fun to drive. But the overall value of the RDX, the roomier cabin gives a tough fight to the X3. With the AWD system and more accurate braking, RDX also offers an equally satisfying driving experience. With a price tag that is almost $5,000 less than the X3, 2022 RDX proves to be a better choice.

2021 BMW X3

2022 Acura RDX vs 2021 Audi Q5

Audi has everything on offer- a powerful engine, good interior space, and ample cargo space, Acura has all this as well and a lot more; more standard features, more safety and driver assistance aids. It will also be more reliable than the Audi in the long run; much credit to the Honda engineering. The biggest advantage of the Acura over the Audi is the less expensive price tag it comes with.

2021 Audi Q5

2022 Acura RDX vs 2022 Volvo XC60

Just like the other two rivals, again the XC60 and RDX offer a lot, with the latest in infotainment tech, premium interior, and powerful engine. Volvo offers more in terms of safety features whereas the RDX offers better value for money and is more reliable than the Volvo.

2022 Volvo XC60

2022 Acura RDX Final Verdict

The 2022 RDX does not see many changes this year, but we are not complaining. The RDX is credited with providing a complete experience. May it be performance, driving dynamics, or interior comfort and luxury, the RDX will not disappoint its customers. All of this can be had at a price that is much lower than most other rivals which just makes it one of the most desired and intelligent choices in the modern-day small crossover SUV segment.
