Which Trim should you buy?

At a starting price tag of $52,300, the 2021 Acura TLX Type S packs a lot of features and muscle that offer a great value for the 50 grand you spend. Although there were a couple of additional packages available, we recommend the basic factory bundled TLX Type S only which would certainly cater to all your performance needs and creature comforts.

Engine and Performance

The 2021 Acura TLX Type S is powered by a potent 3.0-liter V6 backed by a turbocharger to churn out 355 horses and 354 pounds of power and torque respectively. This grunt is routed to the wheels via a 10-speed sport-tuned automatic transmission. As standard, we have Acura’s popular and patented SH-AWD system that sends power to either of the rear wheels when required, thus enabling excellent traction and control.

On the performance front, the 2021 Acura TLX Type S does a 0-69 sprint in 4.5 seconds and could reach a quarter-mile in 13.7 seconds while attaining a top speed of 151 mph. However, these figures can’t smash its competitors off the line as all of its rivals are pretty quicker by a sloping margin. Quite surprisingly, the BMW M340i with its Inline-6 turns out to be the fastest in the segment, taking just 3.8 seconds to hit the 60 mph mark.

In the battle of the muscle, the Mercedes-Benz AMG C 43 is the clear winner making 385 horsepower and 384 lb-ft of torque, followed by the BMW M340i that makes 382 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. On the other hand, the Audi S4 is commendable in attaining 369 pounds of Torque while revving just 1,370 rpm. However, the Acura TLX Type S offers a composed and refined driving experience.

How well does the 2021 Acura TLX Type S handle?

As mentioned, the ride quality and handling on the 2021 Acura TLX Type S are well composed and refined. Its strong chassis and SH-AWD platform make for exceptional handling and it feels more comfortable especially at the lower rpm and tight corners where the SH-AWD comes into action.

But at times, its heavyweight can be felt as we feel a kind of drag in turning directions but thanks to its SH-AWD that senses the slow revs and instantly sends the power to the required rear wheel that provides great traction and control.

Fuel Economy

Quite recently, the EPA ratings of the 2021 Acura TLX Type S were revealed and they are just okayish. It delivers 19 mpg in the city, 25 mpg on the highways, and 21 mpg in combined usage. Although these figures might seem lesser than its traditional TLX siblings that offer 25 mpg combined, these are pretty decent for a car with 355 hp.

While all the rivals of the Acura TLX Type S offer a better fuel economy, the BMW M340i tops the table with an impressive 25 mpg combined and a range of 395 miles on a full tank. The Mercedes-Benz AMG C 43 features the largest fuel tank with 17.4 gallons capacity, followed by the TLX Type S with 15.9 gallons.

2021 Acura TLX Type S vs 2021 BMW M340i

Truth be told, the BMW M340i is a perfect all-rounder in this segment. It packs more power than any other sedans in this segment and it offers a very smooth driving experience, after all, BMW is known for that. On the whole, it's really tough to draw a conclusion between the two as the TLX Type S shines on the seating space and agility.

2021 Acura TLX Type S vs the 2022 Mercedes-Benz AMG C 43

Yet again this German sedan impresses us on the performance forefront with more muscle and ride quality than the TLX Type S. Also, the Mercedes-Benz AMG C 43 sports a more practical and luxurious cabin than that of the Acura’s. But the Acura TLX Type S is more affordable than the AMG C 43, given that it offers pretty much the same.

2022 Mercedes-Benz AMG C 43

2021 Acura TLX Type S vs the 2022 Audi S4

Well, Audi’s superlative performance and driving dynamics are second to none and it's the same with the Audi S4 too. It offers splendid time behind the wheel with no compromises on the performance. But the Acura TLX Type S offers pretty much the same responsiveness and performance as that of the S4. In fact, the TLX Type S handles better than its rivals in tight corners and sleek curves.

2022 Audi S4
Final Verdict

We often notice that premium sedans won’t make up to a good value proposition. But the 2021 Acura TLX Type S is different from the other sport sedans. You can literally see every buck you invested returning back in the form of a heart-thumping performance and a class-leading feature set. Despite the fact that it is the first generation in the TLX high-performance lineup, it gives a near edge to the German adversaries and in some cases, it outperformed them. All in all, the Acura TLX Type S would be a true performance sedan with track-based DNA.
