Detailed Review

After being showcased as a pre-production prototype at the Geneva motor show in 2014, the Alfa Romeo 4C soon became a wishlift car. The Italian caramker has brought up the car with soothing design and pleasant interiors. The car looks unique with its low menacing front fascia, and curves. The design character line flow from the front grille to the rear. For this year, the 4C gets a front profile with carbon-fiber vents and attractive yellow stitching for the black leather seat.

The 4C goes easy on a curvy road or racetrack. The turbo-4 powertrain churns out 237 horsepower and tranmits it to the rear wheels through a 6-speed dual-clutch transmission. The mid-engine assemble ensure maximum agility and balance. Offering a great grip, the car is meant for the racetrack.

The manual steering works great at high speed, however, is hard to maneuver at lower speeds. Priced at $65,900, the Alfa Romeo 4C Spider competes with Porsche 718 Boxter, and Jaguar F-type convertible.

We Recommend

The first and foremost choice here is what you wish to take, a Coupe or a Convertible. It is one's personal decision. Since there are no trim levels for either of the body styles, we would recommend you to go for the Convenience package, which offers rear parking sensors. This will fill the gap of the missing backup camera and poor rear visibility. Additionally. You may also get the dual-mode Akrapovic exhaust which offers remarkable exhaust note.

2018 Alfa Romeo 4C Engine

9.5/10

“Understand, the 4C is a sports car that will make you work a little, will have you feeling as though you’re woven into the very carbon-fiber fabric of the monocoque, and in the process, will mold a permanent grin on your face with its Olympian showcase of athletic ability.” - Motortrend

The Alfa Romeo, having the smallest engine is able to hit speeds quicker than its rivals because of the lightweight construction. The monocoque chassis has been made of Carbon Fiber to help aid weight reduction.

The Porsche is not far behind in terms of acceleration but it is the Jaguar F-Type that takes over 5.4 seconds to hit 60 mph mark.

Ride and Handling

The Alfa Romeo 4C’s handling on smooth, low grip surfaces is excellent. The weight reduction helps the car go around the corner with little or no body roll. However, the car understeers a bit when pushed harder.

This is not an issue when the roadster is driven normally. The steering provides ample amount of feedback on smooth roads whereas it tends to get lighter on wet roads.

Braking

The Alfa Romeo 4C Spider has 12-inch disc on the front and 11.5-inch discs on the rear. It has an impressive braking distance of 97 ft. when the brakes are applied at 60 mph. Yet again, it is the lightweight construction of the body that aids in reducing the stopping distance as opposed to its rivals.

2018 Alfa Romeo 4C Interior

3.1/10

“The Alfa Romeo 4C's interior features barely tolerable ergonomics, clumsy entry and exit, little legroom, appalling outward visibility, and virtually no cargo or storage space. This is absolutely not a daily driver.” - Edmunds

The Alfa Romeo 4C Spider can seat two people comfortably, including the driver. The seats offer a good amount of support. The cabin of the Alfa Romeo is designed and handcrafted in the workshops of Maserati, Italy.

The 4C Spider has leather seats. These seats are supportive enough on the back but lack a bit in terms of thigh support. The steering wheel can be adjusted for both reach and rake so you have a comfortable driving position.

However, due to the lack of damping, long trips can be really frustrating as a lot of engine noise filters into the cabin.

The Alfa Romeo is not a practical car. With the roof down, you get little or no trunk space. The small trunk is full with the roof down and you have no space to put in anything more into the trunk, not even those small backpacks.

2018 Alfa Romeo 4C Exterior

“This is a gorgeous car, with tidy lines, functional scoops and that oh-so-Alfa grille neatly integrated into a compact shape. The design evokes the Type 33 Stradale from the 1960s, but you're struck by the smallness of the Alfa Romeo 4C, especially in a parking lot full of giant SUVs, monstrous Camrys and hulking Civics.” – Kelley Blue Book

Dimension and Weight

The Alfa Romeo is quite a small car. It is lightweight and not as long as its competitors in the segment. It has a curb weight of 2337 lbs. making it lighter than its rivals. Hence, the small engine on the Alfa Romeo is sufficient to beat the Jaguar F-type and the Porsches.

2018 Alfa Romeo 4C Competition

2018 Alfa Romeo 4C Spider vs Porsche 718 Boxster

The Porsche 718 Boxster is heavier than the Alfa Romeo. The heavier weight is compensated on the Porsche using a larger and powerful engine. While both offer one of the purest driving experience, the 4C Spider lacks out is in terms of cabin quality, comfort, and features.

2018 Alfa Romeo 4C Spider vs Jaguar F-Type

The Jaguar F-Type weighs almost 1000 lbs. more than the 4C Spider and hence not so engaging to drive through curvy roads. However, it’s far more comfortable with a luxurious cabin, lot of features and also a larger more powerful engine.

2018 Alfa Romeo 4C Final Verdict

The Alfa Romeo is a car that offers the performance of a Porsche Boxster or a Jaguar F-Type. The car handles exceptionally well and is also quicker than its counterparts. Alfa Romeo has avoided a lot of features that are found on its rivals and made this car driver oriented.

The car lacks many of the luxury features available in the competitors. For example, it has air conditioning system but no the automatic climate control. The car performs exceptionally well due to its low weight.

So, if you are looking for a car that costs around $65,000 and want the best performance car in the segment, the Alfa Romeo is for you. However, if you don’t want a bare basic car, go for the Jaguar F type or the Porsche 718.
