Overview

Being one of the sexiest mid-engined Italian exotic car, the 2017 Alfa Romeo 4C coupe is a lightweight and extremely efficient car which is performance driven vehicle giving the rider a feel of a racing car behind its steering. With quick acceleration and best in class performance the 4C stands out among its peers.

The coupe is powered by a four-cylinder engine coupled with a six-speed twin-clutch automatic transmission which can howl 237-hp turbo which is decent in its class but weighs just less than 2500 pounds making it one of the lightest coupe in its class. Since it comes in a single trim it costs $55,900 and few standard packages could be added for extra comfort and performance.

Due to its sporty performance and look the car has somewhere lost the touch while designing its interior, treating the driver as an integral cog in the machine rather than a passenger sitting for a ride which makes it a little to extreme for driving enthusiasts as well.

The 2017 Alfa Romeo 4C is a dream car—light, nimble, quick, and fun—with zero practicality. In other words, it's a supercar. -TheCarConnection

The 2017 model of the Alfa Romeo 4C comes with a turbocharged all-aluminum four-cylinder engine coupled with a six-speed twin-clutch automatic transmission sending power to the rear wheels which produce powerful 237 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque which may not be as powerful as that of Porsche Cayman but the 4C indeed catapults quickly from a stop thanks to its reduced curb weight. Additionally, this eager-to-please engine has a very pleasing exhaust note, which can be intensified with the optional dual-mode exhaust system.

Acceleration

The turbocharging small engine whenever tested produces surging acceleration, but 4C reverses that thought. It's four-cylinder not only boasts of excellent urban manners but it also has Corvette-challenging speed which takes the vehicle from Zero to 60 mph in just 4.2 seconds. Even the Alfa TT coupe and the Cadillac ATS are a full one second behind the 4C making it the boss when it comes to acceleration. Porsche Cayman and the Romeo 4C are tough competitors as they are just few milliseconds apart.

Ride and Handling

Showered with sports car like features the Romeo 4C has zero power assist in its steering, so it gives crisp, precise and extremely informative responses at speed which makes it an excellent sports coupe. But during low-speed heaviness amateur or inexperienced drivers may face a bit of an issue while parking. Being a performance oriented car the driving dynamics of the rear-wheel-drive 4C are awesomely sporty.

The 4C comes installed with the Alfa DNA Pro Drive Mode Selector which basically has four driving settings namely, the comfortable Natural and All-Weather modes and the more aggressive Dynamic and Race modes which can be customized as per the requirement of the road. It's lightweight body and chassis construction, sticky tires and race-car-like steering suspension makes gives it a very unique and dynamic handling quality that very few cars could match.

Braking

Brakes of the Alfa Romeo 4C are made by Brembo which is four-pistoned and vented in front as well as two-piston TRW rear. In the panic speed brake test the 4C took 104 feet to come to stop from 60-0 mph. The bottom-hinged brake which is pretty rare in its class gives you an extremely firm feel, doesn't have much travel and the pedals are also difficult to modulate. It operates much like a race car wherein you'll need to press the pedals firmly but the action turns out positive and reassuring to the driver. Except the Cadillac ATS, both Porsche Cayman and Audi TT coupe give you impressive numbers but Cayman walks over its peers with its ferocious breaking power taking mere 99 feet to come to halt from 60-0 mph.

Fuel Economy

7.7/10

Even being a sports car the Alfa 4C churns out excellent fuel economy ratings mostly because of its smaller engine. It earns estimated 24 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway by the EPA thereby making the 4C the most fuel-efficient car in its class. Porsche Cayman sits at the bottom of the as it sips more fuel compared to others. Both Audi TT coupe and the Cadillac ATS gives roughly the same number in the mileage test having 26 and 25 combined mpg rated by the EPA.

"The hard-bolstered seats can pinch too much rear end—it's Italian, after all—and the roof pillars are very close to the occupants." -TheCarConnection

Seating and Comfort

When it comes to comfort the 4C wouldn't be the best option to choose as its purposefully stiff suspension and loud exhaust isn't easy to live with. Surprisingly, you'll also find no armrests in the car as well. It is a two-seater luxury sports car which that thankfully comes with cloth upholstery as standard. However, most of its rival has synthetic leather or partial leather seats at a minimum which are similar in terms of price range. Another thing that many riders would find strange is its seat adjustment traits as there are no power adjustments available, and the seats are quite vertical and don't lean back very far thereby making it a tiring affair for cross country travel. Even the rear seats are essentially fixed and don't recline beyond about 90 degrees.

Infotainment System

It is futile to expect a host of high-tech infotainment feature from the 2017 Alfa Romeo 4C as it doesn't have much to boast about. The four-speaker sound system is a no-frills affair and which is quite basic and is not comparable to the sound quality offered by its rival Audi TT coupe. Following are the basic infotainment features you'll find in the 2017 variant of the Alfa Romeo 4C:-

  • Alpine sound system
  • Bluetooth
  • USB port
  • HD and satellite radio
  • A driver's display with crisp color graphics

Cargo volume

Alfa Romeo 4C doesn't technically have a dedicated trunk as its mid-mounted engine takes up most of the 4C's rear space making it difficult to carry large items. It has just enough room to adjust a small bag and a handful of items. Even its cabin storage is virtually nonexistent having only a leather pouch which is suitable to carry a few small items as it lacks the traditional-leather pouch. The only thing that you'll find as the namesake for in-car storage are the two useless cup-holders, a stretchy net under the dash and a lockable pouch behind the center armrest.

Dimension and Weight

The exterior of the Alfa Romeo 4C coupe is composed entirely of scoops, curves, cat-eyed side glass, round LED taillights, and the very famous signature Alfa overbite. If you look inside you would be greeted with the low-slung cabin which is dotted with red accents, a nicely cut flat-bottom steering wheel which has some plastic texture to make it look like the road surface intermingled with exposed carbon-fiber surfaces. The coupe is lightweight when compared to its rivals which gives it an edge when it comes to performance. It can swiftly move through sharp edges which is like an arrow in its quiver. The Cadillac ATS is among the heaviest which drastically effects its overall performance including parking in compressed spaces.

Safety

The 2017 Alfa Romeo 4C hasn't undergone crash testing by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration just like many other luxury cars. It's strange that no advanced safety features are standard in the Alfa 4C when the basic rearview camera is missing. Rear Parking Sensors are the only available driver assistant feature you'll get with the 2017 Alfa Romeo 4C. Following are the list of safety features provided by the sports car: -

Competition

Alfa Romeo 4C Coupe Vs.  Audi TT Coupe

The 2017 flagship of the Audi TT Coupe has left many wondering about its highly crafted and impeccable cabin design which is bolstered by impressive level of technology. The brand has left no stone unturned to make this model a high-grade car in its class upping the competition for its peers. Its impressive steering and precise handling make the vehicle easy to maneuver in any given situation. Let the turbocharged, four-cylinder engine not fool you as it produces more power than you might think. It comes standard with all-wheel-drive making sure that its suitable for any kind of weather. But the TT coupe is marred by limited rear seat space making it difficult to enjoy the ride for rear passengers. Ideally, it is more suited for you bags than it is for people. It is also a let down on trunk capacity so you'll need to pack light while traveling.

Alfa Romeo 4C Coupe Vs.  Porsche 718 Cayman

Porsche 718 Cayman is the perfect car for those who are sports car aficionado. Equally priced as that of 4C, the Cayman is far more luxurious from the inside than Alpha 4C. It's all new turbocharged engines deliver stirring performance while giving improved fuel efficiency number. Its PDK automated transmission is one of the best in class and so is its confidence stilling sharp handling. The Cayman boasts of more cargo space than its rivals which is ok in its class. If you wish to make the interior of the Cayman look and feel more upscale then you could opt for material options like brushed aluminum and mahogany but that would surely come with a high price tag. It's new four-cylinder engines indeed gives out a great performance but it doesn\u2019t sound as good as their six-cylinder predecessors

Alfa Romeo 4C Coupe Vs. Cadillac ATS coupe

The ATS coupe is a vehicle that is very swift and goes around turns with sheer poise and confidence. You'll also be surprised by the availability of manual transmission which is quite rare in its class. It's unique suspension and plenty of performance enhances the car's fun-to-drive character. The Cadillac ATS is equipped with the turbocharged four-cylinder engine which relatively generates a lot of noise and is neither fuel efficient like the Porsche Cayman. It suffers from compromised back seat space and small trunk which is not the best in class. Its infotainment interface which is named Cadillac User Experience (CUE) can be very frustrating to operate.

Final Verdict

This lightweight European marquee doesn't just look and sound fast but is actually quite fast. Alfa Romeo is an exotic sports car which launches quickly from a stop and offers incredible handling on twisty roads thus making this sprightly sports car an excellent option for spine-tingling drives. However, much have been sacrificed just to carve its exterior beauty as it lacks the comfort and support from the inside as expected from a car like of this grade. Lack of power steering along with firm suspension can sometimes be tiring for regular users. But you'll be impressed with the Romeo 4C's agile handling at higher speeds and is pretty good in taking you through twists and turns with its lively demeanor which not every car could boast of. 2017 Alfa Romeo 4C Coupe is a nimble sports car which may not be the ideal one to expect high level of comfort and convenience but if can live with it then maybe you can consider it driving home.
