Well as it may seem, it does not quite challenge them but steals away the show from them. That is the 2019 Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio.

It has 505 hp of power from just a 2.9L, turbocharged, V6 engine which is originally a Ferrari California T engine sans tow cylinders. It comes with a ZF automatic gearbox which drives the rear wheels. An Italian performance car with rear wheel drive - can life offer anything better for $72,000?

The Alfa Romeo Giulia comes in three trims – Base, Ti, and the Quadrifoglio. The first two trims come with a 2.0L, turbocharged engine developing 280 hp and they are necessarily regular sedans. Pour in almost twice the amount of money and then comes the Quadrifoglio which comes with a 2.9L, turbocharged, V6 engine developing 505 hp and it totally transforms character into a fierce sports sedan. It gets an entire bunch of performance treatment with lots of carbon fiber and tuning towards making it the best mid-sized performance sedan.

Engine and Transmission

The engine produces 505 hp of power from just a 2.9L, V6 engine. That’s a massive number for such a small engine. Of course it’s turbocharged and there is a certain amount of turbo lag at the very low end but the engine picks up pace very fast and it loves to rev. It loves to be pushed and it produces the power very progressively and linearly and it’s a joy redlining this engine.

It comes with an 8-speed automatic transmission which is also very great. There is also a manual transmission available but it’s not all that great and we do not get it in the US either. It’s not much of a loss hence. The ZF automatic is probably the best in the business and it shifts gears instantaneously. The column mounted aluminum paddle shifters are an absolute delight to tap on.

The AMG in the Mercedes C63 S is equally powerful and sounds better too but does not rev as happily as this engine in the Alfa. The Audi RS5 and the BMW M4 might be underpowered on paper but still are sensational machines.

It accelerates from a standstill to 60 mph in just 3.9 seconds. Its super light with all those carbon fiber all around and can be optioned with all-wheel drive for better traction of the line. In fact, it’s the fastest to 60 mph in the competition but the Mercedes catches up across the quarter mile mark by just tenth of a second. The competition is neck and neck indeed.

Ride and Handling

The Alfa is a very versatile car as it can remain soft and supple on the road and yet you can throw it around corners on a track or on a twisty mountain road. Like in Ferrari’s, this Italian too comes with a bumpy road mode which softens the dampers for the road and the ride remains very comfortable. There is very good sound insulation and it feels very refined on the road.

Dial up the notches, put the car in race mode and it’s immediately an angry beast. The suspension stiffens up, the throttle response becomes more aggressive, gear changes are faster and it becomes such a joy to drive. Push hard on the throttle and the tail is ever so ready to pop out. The car remains extremely flat through corners.

The steering too is sharp and precise. It changes directions in an instant and responds adequately to inputs on the steering. Point the steering where you want to and the car will go. It has the right amount of weight to it and it feels amazing to hold with the alcantara and carbon fiber inserts.

The Giulia gets carbon ceramic units and they are adequately strong. They stop the car in just 102 ft from 60 mph which is really impressive. However, they are brake by wire and hence the pedal lacks some amount of feeling and it becomes difficult to tell what’s going on with the tyres. That is still a very small problem and you always have enough confidence in the stopping power. The Giulia has the best stopping distance in the competition, even better than the BMW M4 which has larger brakes and is also lighter.

Fuel economy from the Giulia is pretty decent and what you’d expect from a sports sedan. It returns 20 miles to the gallon which is quite respectable and at par with the competition as well.

Open the door and the Alfa welcomes you to its Italian flare and sportiness. The red and black interior with lots of carbon fiber inserts look absolutely stunning. The interior can also be optioned with different colors and wooden trims but we think its best justified with the former as it really adds to the sportiness. The steering wheel feels beautiful to hold and the large aluminum paddles are simply great.

The dashboard has a very aesthetic flowing design smartly integrating the infotainment system. The switches are all very neatly laid out and feel very good to touch and use. The ergonomics are very sorted in this car and everything is where you’d expect it to be. It’s surprisingly well built for an Italian car. Fit and finish is still not as good as the Germans but certainly competent.

Seating and Comfort

The seats are carbon fiber bucket seats but they are pretty comfortable still. They come wrapped in leather and alcantara and they hold you really well. The rear seats are adequately spacious as well with rear AC vents and it’s actually a pretty comfortable space to be in.

In fact, the Alfa has the most spacious rear seats and that’s really a great thing. You’d expect this car to be weirdly quirky and impractical and stupid considering its Italian but Alfa has done an amazing job at making this a good machine to carry people around in fair bit of comfort.

Infotainment System

Alfa surprises again with an easy to use and rather intuitive infotainment system. The system is asymmetrical but still aesthetic and the graphics are really good quality. It’s controlled via a rotary knob on the center console and it responds quickly to commands.

There is another digital screen that sits between the analog gauges in the instrument cluster for various vehicle information. On the center console also lies the volume knob which is an unusual place for it to sit but very convenient to use. Also on the center console sits the drive mode selector knob.

The Qaudrifoglio does not have the best in class boot space as the Audi edges ahead with 16.4 cu-ft of space but its generous enough and you’d be able to carry most things you would want for yourself and your family. You can easily fit in three large suitcases in this boot here.

The Quadrifoglio upgrade piles on the pheromones with a snarling front bumper, a massive diffuser straddled by Ferrari-like exhaust tips, and a (painted) carbon-fiber hood and roof.” – Car and Driver

The Giulia Quadrifoglio distinctly looks like an Italian car, especially in red. There are huge air intakes on the front bumper and in between those sits Alfa’s signature inverted triangular grille. There are character lines that beautifully sculpt the hood to meet the grille. The side profile is graced by air vents on the front fender from which arise some more lines flowing along the sides.

The LED tail lamps on the rear look very sharp and there are quad exhaust as well. It looks the sportiest from the rear with a small carbon fiber spoiler on the boot lid and a rather large diffuser at the bottom. The wheels of the Quadrifoglio are most distinctive and there is nothing like that from any other manufacturer. The five petal blackened spokes are certainly the coolest design element in the car.

The Alfa is the smallest car here in terms of length but is the tallest too. In spite of being the shortest, it still has a competent wheelbase which translates to good amount of interior space. The Mercedes C63 S is the longest car and also has the longest wheelbase in the competition.

The Alfa Giulia Quadrifoglio hasn’t been tested by IIHS and the NHTSA to offer you their ratings. Both the organizations have tested the standard Giulia sedan and it has earned very good ratings indeed. The Quadrifoglio naturally inherits all those safety features and there are plenty optional active safety features to keep all its occupants safe.

The Driver Assistance Dynamic package includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go technology, automated emergency braking, automatic high-beam headlights, and lane-departure warning, all of which come for a premium of $1,500. Add another $500 and you get forward-collision alert and automated emergency braking.

Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio vs Audi RS 5

The Audi RS 5 is an equally good car. It has 50 horses less than the Giulia but it still feels pretty light on its feet. The Audi probably looks the best and its interiors are certainly the best with all its technology and great built quality. It handles beautifully around corners and can be comfortable as well with its adaptive dampers. There is some understeer when pushed hard and the rear seats have way less space than the Quadrifoglio and has two lesser doors as well.

 It’s cheaper than the Giulia and it’s German. There is very little separating the two in terms of driving dynamics but the Giulia with more power is certainly the faster car. In the end to decide between these cars, you’d want to buy the Audi with your head but you’d buy the Alfa with your heart as it certainly feels more special.

The Mercedes AMG C63 S is a very good car with an extremely good engine. It has two more cylinders and sounds way meaner. Its German and its interior are hence built better. It is also loaded with safety tech. On the down side, the ride is very stiff and the steering lacks certain amount of feeling. The rear seats in comparison are also quite cramped.

That brings us to the Giulia which is equally powerful, equally fast, rides better and has a great steering. Its interiors are more stylish and there’s nothing beating its Italian flare. A little cheaper than the Mercedes, the Giulia Quadrifoglio is a far better package and clearly stands out quite well from the Mercedes.

The BMW M4 has been one of the benchmarks in the mid-size performance sedan segment because of its handling dynamics and it’s tough to beat the M4 there. It’s a light, nimble and a very agile car. The steering is beautiful and the balance is extraordinary. It looks great too with all that aggressive stance.

That said, the Giulia is more powerful, is faster hence, has four doors unlike the M4 which has only two and still packs in bucket loads of fun. Also, the interiors in the Giulia feel more special and this generation of BMW interiors have started to feel old now. With very little differences in price, the Beemer being the cheaper one, it is more focused as a performance car and you would buy it with your heart. The Giulia on the other hand is more practical, more powerful and almost as fun as the M4 is not completely and is a car you’d buy with your head.

The Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio is the Alfa the world had been waiting for so long. It’s an absolutely amazing car. It drives beautifully, handles like a dream, its light, looks curvy and sexy, has good interiors, is comfortable when you’d want it to be and is ferociously fast. Does a car need to be any more?

It’s got every bit of an Italian flare and it certainly stands out in the sea of German performance sedans. It’s unique and it has a very special character to itself. It’s worth all your penny, not because it offers value for all that it is but because it puts a smile on your face which you’d not get in any other car. Here we say it, it’s the best mid-sized performance sedan and certainly the best Alfa Romeo there has ever been.
