The Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio sedan shares the same underpinnings as the regular Giulia, but it’s a different machine altogether. It is considered to be one of the best high-performance luxury sedans in its class.

ProsConsWhat's New

Great exterior styling

Alfa Romeo's reliability cannot be trusted

For 2021, Alfa Romeo went with the “if it ain't broke, don't fix it” mentality. Since the 2020 Giulia Quadrifoglio already left a good impression, they decided not to change anything for the 2021 model year. However, four new paint colors are available for the taking – Ocra GT Junior, Rosso GTA, Rosso Villa d'Este, and Verde Montreal. Other than these, the 2021 model year is exactly the same as the 2020 model year.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

Complemented by its stunningly gorgeous looks, and a Ferrari powerplant, the Italians seem to make everything worthwhile. Of course, it doesn’t come cheap as it starts at $76,845 and competes against the BMW M3 Competition, Audi RS5 Sportback, and the Mercedes-AMG C63 Sedan.

The Quadrifoglio is itself the highest trim in the Giulia line-up and hence, it comes as a single trim itself. Of course, it packs itself with a lot of luxury and opulent features. Most of them are focused on uplifting the sportiness of the car. It also comes only as RWD. Other than the four optional packages, you will get the Italian sedan as stock straight from the factory.

Key Features

19” alloy gun-metal wheels

Sporty red-stitched seats

Brembo performance ceramic brakes

Carbon fiber lip spoiler

Carbon fiber steering wheel with F1 inspired paddle shifters

Harman Kardon premium sound system

Quad-tip sports exhaust

The four available packages are – Nero Edizione package for $500 which includes some dark exterior accents; Premium Package for $995 which includes security equipment, heated rear seats, wireless charging, etc; Carbon Package for $1500 which includes a carbon fiber scudetto grille, carbon-fiber exterior mirrors, steering, and leather-wrapped shift knob; Active Assist 2 Package Quadrifoglio for $2200 includes Active Blind Spot Assist, Driver Attention Alert and other driver assistance features.

Which trim should buy?

The Quadrifoglio is the top-end trim of the Giulia sedan hence you only get to choose among the several upgrade packages to further enhance your car. We would suggest you the Premium Package and the Active Assist 2 Package.

Engine and Performance

The gorgeous Quadrifoglio is awakened from its slumber by a 2.9L twin-turbo V6 that is capable of churning out a meaty 505 horsepower and 443 lb-ft of torque without breaking a sweat. The Ferrari-derived engine is married to an 8-speed automatic and many mourn the absence of a manual gearbox, to fully be able to “control” the car. The power is routed to the rear wheels only. With German-sports-car-beating-like power levels, the Giulia Quadrifoglio cruises with utmost ease. On the lower rpm range, the throttle response might feel a little laggy, but once past a certain threshold, it rushes like a cheetah. The gearbox also shifts smoothly and quickly.

The Italian sedan reaches 60 MPH from a standstill in a mere 3.8-second mark, offending the German rivals. A quarter-mile is also a breeze for it, with timing of just 11.9 seconds. And not only can the Quadrifoglio can be adrenaline-inducing in a short burst, but it also keeps the speed constant even on twisty roads. Topped off with a max speed of 191 MPH, the Italian sedan is a true high-performance sports sedan of its class, giving the Germans a run for their money. Don’t forget it also has a Nurburgring lap time of 7 minutes and 32 seconds, a testament to its sonorous powerplant.

You couldn’t find a specific stat as a point to differentiate between these cars, as they are so neck and neck, in every aspect! Power delivery is identical in the Alfa Romeo Giulia, BMW M3, and the Mercedes AMG C63 whereas the Audi RS5 falls behind. But when it comes to acceleration, all the sedans are extremely close, with the only difference being in milliseconds. Only the Giulia can cross the 190 MPH speed barrier, though.

How well does the 2021 Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio handle?

The Giulia Quadrifoglio is an extremely fun-to-drive vehicle. The car has great weight distribution and the steering system bridges the gap between the front wheels and the driver, making it clear how they feel and what they are doing. Steering is also very precise and offers excellent feedback. The car goes gracefully around the corners with almost zero body roll.

The Giulia Quadrifoglio also has the DNA drive mode selector with Dynamic, Natural, Advanced, and also Race mode to perfectly choose the drive mode according to the circumstances. The sedan also has its specially-tuned suspension system which can absorb bumps and imperfections on the tarmac but trades in comfort for better handling.

Braking Performance

The Italian sedan comes with Brembo carbon-ceramic high-performance brakes, with 14.2” brakes for the front rotor and 13.8” for the rear rotor. While the brakes perform well and are able to stop the car within a reasonable distance, they do not inspire confidence like the German rivals. It definitely takes more than 100 ft to make the car come to a halt from 60 MPH, but the exact figures aren’t known. The brake pedal lacks feel and therefore, not on par with the German rivals. However, the Brembo brakes execute their job quite well.

The Merc and the Beemer come fitted with slightly larger brakes than the Audi and Alfa. The M3 and RS5 also perform very well in the 60-0 test, coming to a halt rather quickly. The Alfa Romeo Giulia is the lightest among them, so it should perform similarly too.

Fuel Economy

The 2021 Alfa Romeo sedan has a mad, twin-turbo V6 that sips a lot of fuel and is not the most efficient in the segment, of course. EPA-estimated figures are around 17 MPG for the city, 25 MPG for the highway, and 20 MPG for combined. You can still get away with using the Giulia as a family daily driver if you consider its performance and can bear the higher-than-average gas bills.

Equipped with a fuel tank of 15.3-gallons, it offers you a driving range of 260/382/306 miles for city/highway/driving. It is not a huge figure and definitely less than its rivals. Thus, a few points are snatched away from its practicality for long road trips.

The Mercedes-Benz C300 clearly offers the best driving range and also the best fuel economy, alongside the Audi RS5. The Beemer has the lowest fuel economy and the lowest driving range, while the Alfa Romeo also does not offer as much as the other two German sedans.

The 2021 Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio comes with a pretty driver-focused, sporty cabin. There are premium materials all around, but you will notice that these items are not very durable in no time. The dashboard has a beautiful design, arguably one of the most unique designs in this segment. A smooth line flows from over the gauge clusters and gently slopes down towards the passenger’s side, shrouding over the center infotainment screen. The stitching is beautiful and the dashboard is constructed of soft-touch materials. There are also plenty of buttons and dials in the center. The build quality might not be the best, but the design is attractive.

2021 Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio Sedan front seats

Alcantara seats are offered as standard and there are leather elements too. The seats are quite comfy. They are sporty and lowered, just like in a sports car. There are also a few color options available according to your needs. You can also upgrade to Sparco leather and Alcantara mix for the seats. The front seats are 14-way power-adjustable with power recline, height adjustment, cushion tilt, and 4-way power lumbar support. The seats are heated too along with leather-wrapped and heated steering as well. The interior has leather on almost every surface. Power-adjustable bolsters also keep the front seat occupants in place during those spirited driving sessions. The front seat is roomy, but the rear seat has compromised headroom and legroom, and not ideal for adults for longer journeys. Dual-zone automatic climate control comes as standard.

The Alfa Romeo sedan can fit 13.4 cubic feet of cargo storage as standard, which is a decent figure. You can easily take it out for your weekly groceries and fit in some camping gear or small suitcases for a small road trip or a weekend trip. The rear seats fold in a 40/20/40-split and with them down, the space increases to allow more items to be stored. In-cabin storage solutions are also plentiful for easy small-item storage.

All the sedans have the same exact spacing upfront but when it comes to the rear row, all of them are a little cramped and not really ideal for tall adults. The cargo capacity is also okay-ish, but the RS5 thoroughly impresses with a much larger space for cargo.

Some interior features are-

  • Leather and Alcantara 14-way power-adjustable front seats
  • Heated and leather-wrapped steering wheel
  • Leather gear shifter material
  • Leather door trim inserts
  • Driver seat and door mirror memory settings
  • Analog gauge cluster

What’s there to keep you entertained?

The Quadrifoglio comes equipped with an 8.8” touchscreen that has been integrated into the dashboard and does not stick out. The system is easy to use, and also intuitive. It also has a physical rotary control, if you do not want to use the touch screen.

Standard features include AM/FM radio, HD Radio, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, USB ports, SiriusXM radio, etc. A 3D GPS navigation system is also a part of the Quadrifoglio infotainment system. Finally, a 14-speaker 900W Harman Kardon sound system is also present to blast your music.

  • 8.8” touchscreen with rotary controls

Of course, the Giulia Quadrifoglio is an absolutely gorgeous car and can attract the right set of buyers. The brand has made no changes to the 2021 model year in terms of styling. The V Scudetto grille at the front is the iconic Alfa Romeo grille that they use which gives the car its beauty. The front splitter system has dual electric actuators and features a carbon fiber front chin spoiler, to achieve maximum aerodynamic efficiency. The headlights resemble the shape of a teardrop, albeit horizontally, and complements the grille very well. The side has a slow and gentle curve that gives the sedan a coupe-like styling.

The sides are also mostly flush with the exception of the door handles sticking out. The rear end has a carbon fiber spoiler on top of the trunk. The taillights are also classic Alfa Romeo with a design that fits in pretty well with the rest of the body. Finally, the quad-tip exhaust, the source of the beautiful V6 sound, and a big rear bumper wrap things up. On the underside of the body, you will find specific cutouts to direct the air passage to support aerodynamics and agility. It rides on 19” wheels, with LED headlights and LED taillights.

Ground Clearance

The Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio is the lightest car here. The RS5 has the highest ground clearance. Other than that, the dimensions are pretty much the same with minor differences. Also, all the cars look handsome and beautiful, barring “that” one with that grille (yes, BMW).

Some exterior features are –

  • 19” wheels
  • Pirelli P Zero Costa tires
  • Carbon fiber spoiler
  • Carbon fiber roof (optional)
  • Carbon fiber bodyside moldings
  • Heated auto-dimming side mirrors with power folding
  • LED DRLs
  • LED brake lights

Alfa Romeo did not only focus on delivering a beautiful car with a monstrous growl, but they also made the car kept the occupants despite the situation. NHTSA did not get around to testing the car yet, but IIHS has tested it. It gave it “Good” in all the six Crashworthiness tests. Everything else has top-notch too. However, it did not receive any “Top Safety Pick”. Despite that, it still is a pretty safe and worry-free ride.

Some safety features include –

  • Front and rear parking sensors
  • Blind-spot monitoring system
  • Full speed forward collision warning-plus
  • Driver attention alert (optional)
  • Adaptive cruise control w/ stop (optional)
  • Traffic Sign Recognition (optional)
  • Lane Keeping Assist (optional)

2021 Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio vs 2021 BMW M3 Competition

BMW has made the M3 in such a manner that it can actually catch up to the Alfa Romeo this year. With absolutely similar acceleration and power outputs, we know there is not much that separates the two in terms of performance. However, the Beemer does get the advantage when it comes to interior build quality and infotainment. But then again, there is that ugly grille that makes the M3 look extremely weird.

2021 BMW M3 Competition

2021 Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio vs 2021 Audi RS5 Sportback

The Audi RS5 also offers tough competition to the Giulia. It does not deliver as much power as the Italian sedan, but when it comes to on-track performance, it is identical in acceleration. Audi has the Quattro AWD system which earns it some point because it also drives excellently. It is also more practical than the Romeo since it offers way more cargo space and range. Styling is also quite attractive. This is yet another tough choice that buyers must make.

2021 Audi RS5 Sportback

2021 Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio vs 2021 Mercedes-AMG C63 S

The C63 is yet another German luxury sedan that rivals the Italian and gives it a run for its money. Once again, power output is identical and acceleration is identical. Mercedes does have its own set of tech and safety features, which earns it extra brownie points. Merc also didn’t mess up their styling unlike the Bavarians, but we would still pick the Italian beauty. The Merc offers better fuel economy and is more reliable. But in the end, this is another tough choice buyers must make.

2021 Mercedes-AMG C63 S

Final Verdict

The 2021 Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio is a gracious performance machine. It looks gorgeous, has an amazing engine, puts out great performance figures, offers great handling along with a luxurious interior as well. The only issue is its reliability. If you think you are okay with that, then this Italian masterpiece is definitely worth your money. However, the German sedans are also very strong and competitive.
