We are familiar with the way Italians design and make their supercars but there’s one English brand called Aston Martin, popular for not so visually aggressive, extremely beautiful cars. There’s something special about the new Aston Martin DB11. Hand-built in England by only the selected craftsmen, it has that human touch every buyer who spends upwards of $200,000 expects. The DB11 has a bigger responsibility on her shoulders to carry over the legacy of the DB9.

Well, the car still has DB9 vibes which are apparent but it gets a few better things like upgraded aluminum chassis and bulked-up dimensions. Aston Martin sure has rectified most of the issues of the previous model. With the sticker price of $201,850 the car is already brutishly expensive but hold on till you see the price tag of the Bentley Continental GT or McLaren GT. Only the Porsche 911 Turbo S matches very closely with the Aston.

2020 Aston Martin DB11 Features

6.0/10

2020 Aston Martin DB11 slots in the super sports category and while that means huge engines and power, the cabin also gets a luxurious treatment overall. The car comes in 3 trim levels, coupe the one we will be discussing, Volante which is a convertible, and the AMR which gets an even bigger engine but all have one thing similar. The latter two will be reviewed separately. The cabin features and quality are all similar on all these trims and the optional packages as well are the exact same.

The coupe comes with all the sports goodies like adaptive suspension and 20-inch tires. The cabin of the 2020 DB11 is beautifully appointed on each and every corner with either leather or Alcantara. Standard seats wrapped in High grain leather upholstery with beautiful stitching is available as a stand-alone option along with heating and ventilation function. Exterior bits like-colored brake calipers and enhanced roof and hood scoop are available for an added cost.

Which Trim should you buy?

The base DB 11 comes in only one trim level but it can be highly customized according to one’s wish. We would suggest getting the base coupe and you can then splurge on all of those extras. The options include various interior customization options and plenty of leather choices to wrap your seats around with among many others.

2020 Aston Martin DB11 Engine and Performance

9.0/10

The 2020 DB11 gets its screaming power from an all-alloy quad overhead camshaft, 32-valve, 4.0l twin-turbo, 90° V8 front mid-mounted engine that makes 503 horses and 513 lb-ft of torque. People who are already into the supercar scene might find something similar in this engine the moment you turn it on. The V-8 rumble sounds like the one on the AMG cars, well it’s the same engine Mercedes uses so, you aren’t wrong. The 4.1 second 0-60 timing should be enough to explain the power this mill has. And due to less weight than the V-12, the base car handles better than the 12-cylinder AMR variant.

2020 Aston Martin DB11 basic Coupe engine bay

All this power is sent to the rear wheels through an 8-speed automatic gearbox. Being a turbo engine there is a flatline in power in the lower RPM ranges but once you find that sweet spot, all the torque is available at your service. The transmission on this car is very eager to up & downshift in the GT mode and this is for those lazy days for both you and the car. The Sport and Sport Plus modes make the gear shift strategy aggressive and throttle response gets quicker. These are the modes you are actually supposed to drive into if you want to feel all the power that’s under the hood.

All the rivals of the Aston Martin have V8 engines under the hood yet produce significantly more power than the DB11 and that leaves it behind the pack in acceleration. Porsche’s 911 Turbo S is still one of the fastest production cars on the road and is significantly better than the competitors here. The Aston doesn’t also scream ‘look at me’ like McLaren’s beautiful exhaust note does. The 911 Turbo S is quite an example of engineering, tuning & aerodynamics just like the McLaren GT.

How well does the 2020 Aston Martin DB11 handle?

The DB11 is a Grand Tourer and that means enough suspension travel and no stiffer ride quality on those long road trips. The DB11 features an Adaptive Damping System (ADS) with proprietary Skyhook technology with GT, Sport, and Sport + modes. The suspension setup on the GT mode allows it to soak just about everything and makes the overall drive a fun experience. But a series of potholes disturbs the tranquility of the cabin as the springs don’t return to their position quicker, resulting in a shuddering ride.

Aston Martin DB 11 Instrument cluster and pedal shifter

Don’t worry, we are covered in this area as well, the Sport and Sport+ modes stiffen up the springs without compromising on comfort. The steering wheel is the most direct connection between a car and its master and the DB11 has a superbly accurate & quick wheel. On aggressive turns, the car is eager to move with plenty of traction left on the rear end and urges you to make an enthusiastic exit. A beautifully balanced chassis and quicker, accurate steering makes the DB11 an enthralling experience, especially on the curvy countryside roads.

2020 Aston Martin DB11 Braking Performance

The 2020 Aston Martin DB11 gets its stopping power from 15.8-inch ventilated two-piece steel brake discs with six-piston calipers in the front and 14.2-inch ventilated co-cast steel brake discs with four-piston calipers in the rear.

2020 Aston Martin DB11 basic Coupe driving view

The brake pedal has enough feel to them and brings the car to a halt in just 105 feet. In performance cars, we usually see aluminum or even carbon-ceramic brakes for their heat dissipation qualities but on the Aston Martin, we have steel rotors that do get scorching hot on chronic application.

Porsche yet again surprises us with its braking performance. Thanks to its compact demeanor with a lightweight body and the largest brakes it comes with makes it stop under 100 feet. We should give it to the guys over at Bentley as well. It's the biggest car in the group today and the heaviest yet the brakes on Continental GT do a great job. All cars here excel in the braking department.

2020 Aston Martin DB11 Fuel Economy

4.0/10

With the massive V-8 power, the 2020 DB11 still returns a nice fuel economy of 18/24/20 MPG in the city/highway/combined driving cycles respectively. Coupled with a decently sized 20.5-gallon fuel tank, the car gets 410 miles of combined driving range which is best in the class and a very important factor for a Grand Tourer. You generally have to be satisfied with what you get when it is a supercar, but in this case, the DB11 could be termed as reasonably efficient with a very decent range.

The 2020 DB11 provides a good fuel economy overall only to be bested by the Porsche 911 Turbo S. Even though differences aren’t concerning at all, the Porsche just doesn’t stop surprising us, in every category. The Bentley Continental GT is better tuned for highway driving as it gets the best highway economy and the largest fuel tank among all. This puts its highway driving range to 600 miles.

2020 Aston Martin DB11 Interior

8.0/10

Bespoke is the best word to describe the interior of the 2020 Aston Martin DB11; everything you touch inside this car is covered in leather including the infotainment screen, with contrasting stitching done by hand. The metal door handles and all the other metal parts inside the cabin have a reassuring quality to them. That little infotainment screen is the only eyesore in this modern cabin otherwise. Being a sporty Grand tourer, we have some carbon fiber bits inside.

2020 Aston Martin DB11 cockpit view from passenger side

The cabin has a nice comfort and cozy feeling, but tech-wise it lacks a lot of features like a big infotainment screen or a head-up display. The front seats are more than comfortable and have all the modern electronic adjustment and heating functions. The DB11 comes in a 2+2 seating configuration and the second row is only suitable for kids or teens. Overall the cabin of this Aston Martin DB11 has all the luxury and opulence you need in a grand tourer.

Well, the Aston Martin has a nice blend of luxury and technology but it still lacks some, this isn’t the case with Porsche or Ferrari. The seats on both of these cars are a little lightly padded but the overall cabin is better technology-wise. Bently is the best of luxury, it also emphasizes more on high-quality materials rather than making the cabin like a modern-day spaceship. Standout interior features are:

  • Strathmore monotone leather interior
  • Fine stitching matched to the leather color
  • Memory front seats and exterior mirrors (three memory positions)
  • Warm Charcoal seatbelts
  • Automatic temperature control with dual-zone climate control
  • Heated and Ventilated Front seats
  • Wood and carbon-fiber interior inserts

What’s there to keep you entertained?

The 2020 Aston Martin DB11 has a pretty oldish infotainment system with just an 8-inch screen that isn’t touch-sensitive and can be controlled by the rotary dial on the center console. There isn’t any smartphone integration associated with the system. The infotainment system is straight-up used from the old storage bin of the Mercedes and even the UI is the same.

2020 Aston Martin DB 11 Infotainment Screen

The overall operation of this screen is good and on such performance cars, bigger screens don’t really make sense as every inch of real estate is crucial. The sound system is provided by Aston Martin themselves but it could be further upgraded to a Premium audio system from Aston Martin itself or a more advanced Bang & Olufsen BeoSound Audio system. Standout infotainment features are:

  • Infotainment system with capacitive switching
  • 400-watt Aston Martin Audio System
  • 8.0-inch LCD screen with touchpad control
  • iPod and iPhone Integration and USB playback
  • Satellite radio system
  • DAB & AM/FM radio
  • A2DP Bluetooth audio and phone streaming
  • An integrated satellite navigation system

2020 Aston Martin DB11 Exterior

9.5/10

Well at a first glance it will just look like the DB9 as the changes done by Aston Martin are minute yet distinguishable. The DB9 had the most original design and there was no point in fixing it if ain’t broke. The dimensions are swollen up a little bit and the overall car now looks much better. The headlights now are more aggressive along with that grille cut-up more sharply.

2020 Aston Martin DB11 side view

The 2020 DB11 has some smartly blended-in design aspects like the way the front wheel housing continues back into the air vent or how they kept the roof of the car very slender. This grabs the attention much better than anything else on this car. At the rear end, the curvy hip section and those sleek tail lights keep the action going. The 2020 Aston Martin DB11 has the looks of a strong and aggressive fighter dressed up in an elegant dress.

All the cars above look better in a particular way like Porsche is all about being compact yet pretty. The Continental GT has the styling of a gentleman ready to party for the weekend. The most exotic and sporty one in the bunch would be the McLaren GT and it’s the closest thing to the DB11. But the thing is that the word ‘beautiful’ suits Aston Martin the best and it’s sure that it will turn heads wherever you take it. Standout exterior features are:

  • 20" 10-spoke Silver wheels
  • Dark Anodised brake calipers
  • Aston Martin script badging on the rear decklid
  • Primary exterior paint color
  • Graphite splitter, diffuser, and sills
  • Body-colored roof panel
  • Body-colored roof strake

2020 Aston Martin DB11 Safety

4.0/10

The 2020 Aston Martin DB11 is a fast car and looks amazing; no doubt about that. But safety is equally important with looks and as expected there are no crash test scores available for this car for it is expensive. The car does come with a lot of safety features for its occupant’s safety. The standard safety set isn’t adequate but the optional Driver assistance package solves this issue. The supercar obviously has not been crash-tested by any of the agencies. Standout safety features are:

  • Electric park brake
  • Dynamic Stability Control (DSC)
  • Anti-lock braking system (ABS)
  • Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD)
  • Emergency Brake Assist (EBA)
  • Traction Control (TC)
  • Hydraulic Brake Assist (HBA)
  • Positive Torque Control (PTC)
  • Dynamic Torque Vectoring (DTV

2020 Aston Martin DB11 Competition

2020 Aston Martin DB11 vs 2020 Bentley Continental GT

Bentley is a completely different experience altogether; it is more of a luxurious Grand tourer leaned towards comfort more than agility. The pricing on both the cars is similar but Bentley offers an insanely posh interior compared to the Aston. Well, Aston Martin DB11 is fast, handles like a dream but it lacks the practicality aspect. If you have a quarter-million to spend, it would be better to get the Bentley for its complete package.

2020 Aston Martin DB11 vs 2019 Porsche 911 Turbo S

The Porsche 911 Turbo S is a serious performance machine and it has proven itself in the acceleration and braking sections above. The car lacks interior comfort but it’s the car you will love to pick for those weekend track days. The car not only performs the best but also is fuel-efficient which makes it a respectable GT like the DB11. The interior of the Porsche 911 Turbo S is still better in terms of tech being offered. But for the rest, the DB11 wins the money here.

2020 Aston Martin DB11 vs 2020 McLaren GT

Aston Martin is a balanced car with just enough sporty looks and decent power but the McLaren is an all-in supercar. The performance and handling of the McLaren GT are second to none. However, the Mercedes-derived infotainment system the DB 11 feels way better than the one in the McLaren GT.

2020 Aston Martin DB11 Final Verdict

8.0/10

The new Aston Martin DB11 is probably the best car made by them in a long time. The car looks elegant yet has just a dash of sportiness to its design & driving dynamics offer everything. The car can cruise peacefully on the highways or take on the curviest of the roads you can imagine and while doing all this the car stays pretty economical too.

The interior has superb comfort on offer for two but lacks the tech features. If you seriously are in love with the design of this car then please go ahead. But if touring long distances is the only thing on your mind then getting towards its British neighbor makes more sense.
