2018 Aston Martin DB11 V12 Coupe Complete In-depth Review & Buying Guide

Aston Martin is more than your average car manufacturer, decades in making, it has transcended to the status of an icon. But for most of us, it is affectionately the Bond Car. Every generation of the DB series has been associated with this British spy and his on-screen adventures. The Aston Martin DB 11 is the latest iteration, succeeding the DB 9 series.

The DB 11 is equipped with a 5.2 Liter naturally aspirated V12 engine that produces 600 horsepower and 516 lb-ft. of torque. Yes, the DB 11 does bolt on turbos for more power but V12 engine has a lot of character that befits a GT car.

Expert Review

CARHP Editorial March 29, 2019

For Aston Martin, the DB 11 is the car that will either usher a new era or see it off to a grim fate. Seriously, a lot is riding on the back of the DB 11. The DB 11 competes with Bentley Continental GT and Mercedes AMG S 65. At the price point of a quarter of a million dollars, each car is an entirely different experience in itself. And the very existence of these cars isn't just to move you from point A to B with these cars you arrived somewhere in your life.

2018 Aston Martin DB11 V12 Coupe Features

The Aston Martin DB 11 is offered in a single trim only. The DB 11 is offered with standard features like 20-inch wheels, LED headlights and taillights, adaptive suspension and heated power-adjustable seats. The list doesn't end here, it also includes modern amenities like keyless ignition and dual-zone automatic climate control.

Even with a single trim on offer, there are so many customizations that when a DB 11 meets another of its kind it wouldn't be an exact replica. Aston Martin provides options to change interior color, stitching, and leather. The exterior options include gloss-black body kit and an array of wheel options.

We Recommend

Aston Martin DB 11 is available in a single well-appointed trim. Albeit, there are a lot of customizations on offer.

Power with the V-12 is more immediate, as the V-8's turbos take a bit of time to spool up. Thereafter, both engines pin occupants back in those sculpted leather seats and launch this beautiful British missile toward the horizon. TheCarConnection

Engine and Transmission

Six Hundred glorious horsepower that pulls you over the hills and far into that sunset. The DB11 is powered by a 5.2 Liter V12 engine that is mated to an eight-speed ZF transmission. The power is delivered to the aft wheels. Even for a turbocharged engine, the soundtrack is nothing short of mesmerizing.

The V12 version produces a good 100 horsepower more than its V8 sibling. The turbocharged V12 may lack the depth of its naturally aspirated V12 predecessor but it in terms of performance, it has been a great improvement from team Aston Martin. There would be very few instances when you would find this engine short of breath.

When the price is the least of your worries, then what you receive as a product has a unique value. Considering the competition, all of the manufacturers use an iteration of the 12-cylinder engine. When we compare horsepower, the DB 11 comfortably sits between the Mercedes Benz S-Class AMG S 65 and Bentley Continental GT. The former produces the segment best -621 hp and latter produces the least 600 hp.

Weighing in at 4080 lbs., the DB 11 is considerably lighter than its competition. The 0-60 mph is achieved within a lightning quick 3.9 seconds. It easily hails itself in sub -second sports car territory but in the GT drive mode, the DB11 is a bit shy when it comes to spirited driving.

The Aston Martin DB 11 tops out at 208mph. The DB 11 is provided with 3 drive modes. Two of these are Sport and Sport Plus which dramatically change the throttle response for an intensive driving experience.

The competition is stiff but the DB 11 V12 Coupe keeps its crown with its 3.9-second naught to 60 mph acceleration. DB 11 is followed by the Merc with is 4.0 second 0-60 mph run and Bentley Continental GT with its 4.4 second 0-60 mph run.

While the big twelve-cylinder engines are not exactly frugal, yet manufacturers have optimized the engines to be more fuel efficient and comply better with EPA emission standards. The DB 11 scores the best 10.4 tons/year followed by Merc 11.1 tons/year and Bentley 11.8 tons/year.

It is a great feeling to see the speedometer dipping to the left as the brakes are applied and the car sheds its speed. The DB 11 is fitted with 15.7-inch brake rotors at the front and 14.2-inch rotors at the rear.

Due to unavailability of data, it is difficult to determine the DB 11 braking performance. The brake pedal has a definitive feedback which is complemented by a linear response from the pedal. But with the lightest curb weight in the segment and massive brake rotors the DB 11 is expected to perform well in this department. Similarly, the competition which weighs more than the DB 11 is expected to cover more distance before coming to halt.

Ride and Handling

The DB 11 is offered in front engine, rear-wheel drive layout and this layout is complemented by a Limited Slip Differential. But don't mistake the Aston Martin DB 11 for a sports car. This bond car doesn't like to be hurled around the corners. The DB 11 enjoys a unique tuning that puts it between a sports car and more luxurious Mercedes and Bentley. DB 11 is offered with three drive modes GT, S, and S+. GT is where the DB 11 belongs, S and S+ modes alter the dampening and make the car respond better during cornering.

Whatever speed you are doing  either doing 150 mph on the freeway or doing a modest 30 mph on city roads, the DB11 is a car of silent character. The DB 11 cabin adheres to silence. The ZF transmission does a good job of complementing the DB 11 character. The eight gear ratios provide optimal shift points in favor of comfort and efficiency.

These twelve-cylinder gas guzzlers offer massive performance at the push of a pedal. Primarily, GT cars are tuned for high-speed cruising. So, these powerful engines are in for some high-speed cruising duty. Naturally, fuel efficiency is not on the checklist of the buyers. Still, the Aston Martin DB 11 offers a combined mileage of 17 mpg.

Seating and Comfort

If something justifies the astronomical $211,995 price tag, it is the interior of this car. There is something inside that reeks of money. No, it is not old school, but even with its distinct modern equipment, the Aston Martin feels more connected to craftsmanship. The interiors separate the DB 11 from the run of the mill $ 150,000 luxury coupe.

Everything inside the cabin is reassuring to touch. The soft-touch leather, the metal paddles and use of wood. It is like you are being cocooned inside a warm blanket. The DB 11 coupe offers a lower seating but that doesn't come at the price of visibility. The wide view from the front inspires confidence in drivers.

While all the three cars can accommodate 4 passengers, the Merc is more spacious. The DB11 struggles when it comes to rear seating, there's not much space for adults. Even kids would find the rear seats to be very uncomfortable. The rear seats are better to be used as an extension of the cargo space. Overall, the S 65 is more spacious and can accommodate rear passengers, comfortably.

The 2018 Aston Martin DB 11 is offered with the older COMMAND infotainment system which was borrowed from Mercedes. This system comes with an 8 LCD screen and 400-watt audio setup. The system also offers Apple CarPlay integration. The infotainment system on offer is rated high on its ease of use. The infotainment system can be controlled via a scroll wheel at the center console.

A network of cameras 360-degree view camera, 180-degree view camera and, monitor your wheels camera work in tandem to monitor the car's surroundings. This system is highly responsive and provides real-time high-definition footage on the infotainment screen. So, the chances of you scratching the paint on your DB 11 is pretty low.

What works for the DB11 is its clean lines and a timeless design. There are references from the predecessor DB 9 but the DB 11 sets the tone for what is to arrive in the future. Although the DB 11 doesn't post best in class figures, dimensionally. But the DB 11 flaunts handsome proportions, this coupe measures 186.6 inches in length, 76.4 inches in width and 50.4 inches in height.

2018 Aston Martin DB11 V12 Coupe Competition

2018 Bentley Continental GT

The Continental GT is up for a major update in 2018. This car has aged considerably and the chances are high that you would find a rival which offers much more at this price. The W12 engine produces 582 hp and 531 lb-ft. of torque. Although weighing well over 5,000lbs. The Bentley is a Grand Touring machine that offers smooth and effortless, cruising capability.

The 2018 Continental GT is only available as a convertible. It is better to wait for the 2019 Bentley Continental GT which is built on Volkswagen's new MSB platform which will feature a host of new changes.

2018 Mercedes-Benz S-Class AMG S 65

The Merc S 65 proves to be a complete package - it's got the looks, the engine has a great power output- 621 hp and 738 lb-ft of torque, the comfort is also at par with its British counterparts. But it comes with a hefty price tag of $238,900.

Sure it has got everything the S-Class segment offers, but for that price range, there are definitely other options in the market which cater to luxury in a better way.

2018 Aston Martin DB11 V12 Coupe Final Verdict

The DB 11 isn't a hardcore sports car but it will pin you the seat with its fire-breathing 600-hp V12 engine. All that power inside but on the outside it is the definition of poise and composure. The body lines are soothing to look at. With its clean design, the DB 11 gives a hard run for the money to many other exotic cars.

The GT experience would be comfortable, albeit only for the driver and the side passengers. The rear seats are too cramped to be used by people. It simply serves as decoration and additional space for your luggage. Even the 7.9 cu-ft. rear cargo space seems like an excuse.

For $211,955, you are spoiled with luxury and all the electrical gizmos, an ultra-quiet cabin, a user-friendly infotainment system and the power surge of a twelve-cylinder engine. DB 11 is an exotic choice that would command attention.
