The legendary DB series from the one and only Aston Martin is a dream of every enthusiast. With time, not only did the popularity increase but the “James Bond” car also received massive changes and it is one of the most gorgeous performance cars you could buy. The Volante throws the roof away and lets the rich get a feel of the open-air goodness, marinating in luxury. The 2022 Aston Martin Volante’s performance has also been given a slight bump, and this makes it a near-perfect blend of a sports car and grand tourer.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

The new Aston Martin DB11 Volante will be available in a single trim configuration and it’s got everything you desire for. Need speed? This car has got it. Need luxury? This car has got it too. Of course, only a very few privileged people can get a taste of this beauty. The new 2022 DB11 Volante starts at a staggering $208,425 and goes up against other super expensive giants, like the Bentley Continental GT Convertible, Porsche 911 Turbo S Convertible and Ferrari Portofino M.

2022 Aston Martin DB11 Volante Convertible Features

The Volante is available in a single trim only. It is the convertible version of the DB11 Coupe. Unfortunately, it only comes with a V8 and not a V12. It also comes with an automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive only. As anyone would guess, the DB11 is packed with luxury and a long list of opulent features. There are tons of themes and color schemes to choose from and customize your interior. The Volante comes with a retractable roof. And besides the standard features, you can also add more optional features to suit your taste.

Which trim should you buy?

As the 2022 Aston Martin Volante is available in a single trim configuration, you need to opt for it only. It comes with a long list of many desirable features and creature comforts that you would expect from an Aston Martin car. To make your DB11 Volante more appealing, you can also choose the Appearance Package, which adds some cosmetic upgrades to the exterior. The Touring Package adds an Aston Martin branded cleaning cloth, LED torch, obsidian black leather embossed driving documents wallet. The Winter Wheel and Tire Kit adds Bridgestone Blizzak LM001 tires and 20” 10-spoke directional shadow chrome wheels.

2022 Aston Martin DB11 Volante Convertible Release Date

Aston Martin has not made any official announcements regarding the launch date of the 2022 Aston Martin DB11 Volante but we expect it to be released by the end of the year 2021 or the initial weeks of 2022.

2022 Aston Martin DB11 Volante Convertible Engine and Performance

The Volante comes with an AMG 4.0L twin-turbocharged V8 that is capable of churning out 528 hp and 513 lb-ft of torque. This same engine was used to produce 503-hp last year. The engine is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission and the power is transmitted to the rear wheels only. Sadly, Aston Martin has decided not to include the V12 for the Volante, which really would have been nice for all the performance enthusiasts and cult followers of Aston Martin.

Even the V8 can offer all the performance you need. It is plenty fast and plenty fluid as well. The sound of the V8 is also gorgeous and would sound like a melody to your ears. The turbo lag is virtually absent and there is no sudden spike in power. Power delivery is linear and the transmission also handles the gear shifts very smoothly and seamlessly.

The 2021 Volante could shoot off the line and reach 60 MPH in mere 4.1 seconds. However, since the 2022 V8 will have more power, we expect it to offer even better figures in terms of outright acceleration. As there is no official data we would stick with the available data. The quarter-mile is also finished in an equally impressive 11.7 seconds. This time, the top speed is limited to 192 MPH.

Considering the 2021 model, the 2022 DB11 will handle very well as expected. The steering will feel athletic and precise. The adaptive dampers on it will work very well to keep the occupants inside in maximum comfort. Over almost all road surfaces and bumps, the DB11 will remain pretty comfortable, and ride quality is expected to be excellent. However, the road noise might intrude and can be a bit of a problem.

All these stalwarts are extremely quick and stay true to their ethos. However, the Porsche is exceptionally fast. In fact, Porsche makes humble claims and actually downplays their results. In reality, the Turbo S is even faster than the already ridiculous 2.6-second figure. The Ferrari Portofino M comes next followed by the DB11 and Continental GT with 3.6 seconds and 3.9 seconds respectively. The DB11 and 911 Turbo S enjoy higher top speed than their competition.

2022 Aston Martin DB11 Volante Convertible Fuel Economy

The 2022 Aston Martin DB11 Volante’s V8 is not particularly very eco-friendly. However, it still comes up with some decent fuel economy figures for its segment. The EPA estimates for the 2021 model are 18 mpg for the city, 24 mpg for the highway, and 20 mpg for combined driving respectively. Since the engine will be tuned differently for the 2022 model, we expect the fuel efficiency figures to vary slightly. With a fuel tank capacity of 20.5 gallons, it can travel up to 369 miles in the city, 492 miles on the highway, and 410 miles in combined driving conditions.

The Porsche 911 Turbo S Cabriolet offers less fuel efficiency and is equipped with a smaller fuel tank as well. As a result, it offers the least range in combined driving conditions. The Ferrari Portofino M offers 380 miles of range. The Aston Martin DB11 Volante offers 410 miles of range while the Bentley Continental GT is surely the range king owing to a larger fuel tank of 23.7 gallons despite having slightly lower efficiency than the DB11 Volante.

2022 Aston Martin DB11 Volante Convertible Interior

The 2022 Aston Martin DB11 Volante Convertible will offer an utterly luxurious and opulent cabin experience. It has an extremely pleasing interior, not just because of the materials used, but also because of the look and design. It evokes a classy feel and one that is not necessarily sporty or futuristic.

The driver and front passenger are elegantly separated by the wide center console. Also, digital screens are taken over the analog dials. It also gets a full-grain leather upholstery as standard. In certain areas, the stitching may feel a little sketchy; but the overall quality is excellent. You get a full Alcantara headliner too when the retractable roof is up.

Taking cues from the 2021 model, the seats are very comfy and adorned in leather. The seats get the Aston Martin wings logo embossment, celestial perforation, and nexus quilting. The front seats are 12-way electrically adjustable, heated, and have 4-way lumbar support along with seat memory. The 2022 DB11 Volante gets Aston Martin Sport plus seats, adding heavy bolstering to the sides for easy cornering.

The front seats offer adequate space but the rear seats are barely for adults and more suitable for kids only. The in-cabin storage solution is good, to say the least, with center console storage, glovebox, cupholders, and door pockets. The British luxury car comes with only 9.5 cubic feet of cargo storage and can barely fit anything more than a few suitcases or briefcases. You could technically go grocery shopping in your multi-thousand-dollar convertible, but we know you won’t.

Well, there is not much to talk about here since none of these luxury cars bother to give out their interior dimensions. However, each car is luxurious in its own way. The Bentley is perhaps the one with the most opulence, class, and luxury. The 911 Turbo S Cabriolet offers the best cargo capacity of 13.8 cu-ft with its frunk and trunk space combined. It is followed by Bentley Continental GT with 12.6 cu-ft of cargo space, Ferrari Portofino M with 10.3 cu-ft of cargo space, and Aston Martin DB11 with just 9.5 cu-ft of cargo capacity. Some of the standout interior features are:

  • Aston Martin Sport plus seats
  • 12-way power-adjustable front seats with lumbar support
  • Dual-zone climate control
  • Heated front seats with seat memory
  • Sport leather steering wheel
  • Full Alcantara headliner
  • Leather upholstered dashboard
  • Leather/metal-look interior accents
  • Multiple interior themes to choose from

What’s there to keep you entertained?

The 2022 DB11 Volante is not going to see any changes to the current infotainment system found on the 2021 model. It makes use of an 8.0” LCD screen that pops out from the center of the screen. You can control the screen via the capacitive switches provided. It is not the most intuitive or the most responsive in the industry, but still is an improvement over their older infotainment systems. The 12-inch TFT LCD display is provided as the driver information display in the instrument console.

Some standard features include the addition of AM/FM radio, iPod and iPhone integration, USB ports, DAB radio, Bluetooth, satellite radio, mobile hotspot, etc. Unfortunately, you do not find the inclusion of Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. For a good musical experience, Aston Martin's 9-speaker audio system is standard. However, you can upgrade to a 13-speaker Bang and Olufsen BeoSound premium audio system for higher output and better clarity. Some of the standout infotainment features of the DB11 Volante are:

  • 8-inch LCD display for media
  • DAB radio
  • Satellite radio system
  • AM/FM radio
  • iPod and iPhone integration
  • 400-watt Aston Martin audio system
  • Optional 13-speaker Bang and Olufsen sound system

2022 Aston Martin DB11 Volante Convertible Exterior

Aston Martin cars have always been known throughout history for their distinctive styling. The most exquisite feature of the already exquisite DB11 is the way it looks. It is supremely elegant, opulent, premium and grandeur at the same time. The sleek and elegant design finds its way into the Volante version, with the drop-top, and it suits it really well. The front fascia houses the sleek and stylish LED headlights, along with the iconic Aston Martin grille, which fits right into place, without distracting the design too much. The bumper is wide and adds to the style.

From the side too, the car looks just as elegant and classy. It has a gorgeous stance and a very aerodynamic body. The sassy curves are visible everywhere. The rear end also has a pretty classy design, with the narrow stripes acting as LED taillights and the blacked-out rear bumper with the dual exhausts. The fabric roof is power-operated and it is quite sturdy owing to its ‘K-Fold’ design. Overall, the 2022 Aston Martin DB11 Volante Convertible has a very pleasing and eye-catching design.

The Bentley Continental GT is the heaviest of the lot, followed by Aston Martin DB11 Volante, Porsche 911 Turbo S Cabriolet and Ferrari Portofino M. The Porsche is the smallest car on the list, with the shortest wheelbase and also the shortest length. A shorter wheelbase helps with better maneuverability and handling as well. The Aston Martin DB11 Volante and Bentley Continental GT are comparable when it comes to dimensions, but the Continental GT is inherently bigger and sits on a longer wheelbase. A longer wheelbase helps with better interior space and stability at higher speeds. Some of the standout exterior features of the DB11 Volante are:

  • LED headlamps and tail lamps.
  • Body-colored upper package
  • Graphite lower body package
  • Dark anodized brake calipers
  • Dual stainless-steel exhaust
  • 20” 10-spoke cast silver alloy wheels
  • Power heated outside mirrors
  • Enamel wing badges
  • Power convertible top with lining

2022 Aston Martin DB11 Volante Convertible Safety

Well, as you might have already guessed, the DB11 has not been tested by either NHTSA or IIHS and never will be. Such highly expensive cars are low volume and hence are not crash-tested for safety ratings. However, when it comes to safety and driver assistance features, the DB11 does not impress too much. But the lighter power plant and a new aluminum bonded structure will make the Aston Martin Volante nearly five percent stiffer and more resistant to collision impact. It does come with a standard set of safety features and some optional features are available too, which we think you should get for complete peace of mind. Some of the standout safety features of the DB11 Volante are:

  • An aerial view camera system
  • Blind-spot monitoring (optional)
  • Back-up camera
  • Dynamic stability control
  • Emergency brake assist
  • Auto parking (optional)
  • Rollover protection system
  • Hydraulic brake assist

2022 Aston Martin DB11 Volante Convertible Competition

2022 Aston Martin DB11 Volante Convertible vs 2021 Bentley Continental GT Convertible

Both the legendary British brands define what the ultimate echelon of luxury and opulence looks like. Both the cars are extremely fast and can be used as a grand tourer. While the Bentley is more focused on being a higher luxury-focused and comfort-oriented ride, the Aston Martin is a mix of both luxury and sportiness. It prefers both and handles much better than the Continental GT. The Bentley is more luxurious, but the Aston Martin DB11 Volante offers better acceleration. The Continental GT is simply more practical than the DB11 Volante owing to its higher cargo capacity.

2022 Aston Martin DB11 Volante Convertible vs 2021 Porsche 911 Turbo S Cabriolet

If it is Speed vs Luxury, only one wins?. Not exactly. While both of these cars have targeted their own specific demographic, they both share the same fundamental aim – offer luxury and performance. The Porsche is more suited for those who want blistering and mind-boggling speed with top-notch, A-tier handling while the Aston Martin DB11 Volante is for those who want a calmer and more collected ride with a sprint of sportiness. So, this is not exactly an apples-to-apples comparison.

2022 Aston Martin DB11 Volante Convertible vs 2021 Ferrari Portofino M

Just like the 911, the Portofino is a Ferrari. Ferraris are known for being fast, not necessarily the most luxurious. Well, yes, they still are very luxurious; but they are meant to go fast, and fast they do go. We don’t really need to talk about the handling of a Ferrari, either. A grand tourer it is not, but the DB11 certainly is. Once again, not exactly a direct competition. But considering luxury and spirited performance in a single package, we would go with the Aston Martin DB11 Volante.

2022 Aston Martin DB11 Volante Convertible Final Verdict

If you have piles of money lying around, we suspect this won’t be your first supercar. In that case, yes, you should own this Aston Martin without a doubt. It is simply gorgeous and performs equally well. It comes with all the bells and whistles that a GT needs and it handles pretty well too. On top of that, it is very powerful and offers an equally powerful aural experience. The British luxury car is a great blend of sportiness and opulence. Only a few privileged can enjoy the new Aston Martin DB11 Volante Convertible, but those who can, will cherish the car forever.
