Detailed Review

Aston Martin V12 Vantage can be described as a beautifully crafted sports car that is super-fast and loud at the same time. People at Aston Martin thought that the V8 Vantage was slow, so they put in a monster V12, tweaked the suspension and added some Knick knack bits and voila! V12 Vantage was born.

introduced in 2009, the Vantage S Coupe has received  several updates during its production tenure, majorly in gearbox and engine. Over the years, this car has earned a name for itself for its superb performance and excellent handling. For the year 2017, Aston Martin has equipped the car with a 7-speed automatic gearbox, and the 2017 Vantage S is of the finest Aston Martin's ever made.

2017 Aston Martin V12 Vantage S Engine

"There's nothing quite like the roar of the Aston Martin V12 Vantage when it comes to life, and with the new transmission, it's at last as pleasant to drive as it is to look at and listen to"-KBB

Also, to be noted is Bentley comes with 8-speed automatic transmission where the rest of the competition does with 7-speed automatic. Aston Martin’s V12 and McLaren’s V8 are almost similar in terms of power and torque figures. The Audi R8 is powered by a V10 engine which makes 540 horses and 398-pound-feet of torque. Pricewise, the Audi R8 is the most affordable of all, being priced at $162,900 whereas the ultra-posh Bentley is the most expensive at $214,600.

Acceleration

With V12 under the hood and a smooth transmission, the Vantage accelerates extremely fast. Vantage with this engine engine upgrade propels from 0-60 MPH in 3.8 seconds and clears the quarter mile with a time of 11.1 seconds.

The big Bentley is second fastest in 0-60MPH with 3.3 seconds but finishes last in the quarter mile run with a time of 11.3 seconds.

Handling and steering

V12 Vantage is an awesome car. It screams of power and goes through the bends like it’s on a rail track. It doesn’t make you feel nervous with so much power and brings out the true racer in you. Adjustable dampers give options to the driver to change the drive to comfort or sport-oriented. The biggest elecment of surprise though, is the way it hides its weight. One never feels that they’re driving a bulky sports car, and the mature suspension allows Vantage to steer through curves easily at high speeds.

Braking

This Aston Martin is fitted with 15.7-inch ventilated discs in the front and 14.2 inches at the rear. The V12 Vantage weighs in at 3671lbs, and the car completes the stopping distance from 60-0 MPH in 114 feet.

In comparison, the big Bentley has the bigger front brakes at 15.9 inches. It is also the heaviest of the lot, tipping the weighing scale at a staggering 5115 pounds! That’s the weight of normal SUV nowadays. McLaren is the lightest of the lot at 3296 which results in a quick 0-60 run. Thanks to its lightweight structure, the McLaren stops from 60-0 MPH in 95 feet. The Audi R8 is just shy of Vantage’s weight but still manages to stop in 103 feet from 60-0 MPH.

2017 Aston Martin V12 Vantage S Fuel Economy

Supercars are notoriously thirsty, and V12 Vantage is no different from others. It returns a rather modest 12 MPG in city driving cycle, 18 MPG in highway driving and 14 MPG combined overall.

MPG (city) 12 12 14 16
MPG (highway) 18 21 22 23
MPG (combined) 14 15 17 19

Comparing supercars in this department, McLaren is the better performer than the other three. With 16 MPG in city, 23 MPG on the highway and a combined mpg of 19, it turns out to be the most economical option in a long run. The V12 Vantage fares a dismal last. Bentley is surprisingly third with 21 MPG in the highway for a car that weighs over 2 tons. Audi R8 is the second best in the department.

2017 Aston Martin V12 Vantage S Interior

"The Vantage's interior is a curious mix of supple, high-quality leather and flimsy switchgear. The hand-pull parking brake is located next to the door and requires a strange action to engage and disengage. Rear visibility is poor, but thankfully a rearview camera is standard"- Edmunds

Seating and comfort

Interior of the Aston Martin is the place to be. It’s masterfully trimmed and feels cozy the moment you step in it. The seats are super supportive, and you can make out the difference when you sit in the standard version. Some details have started to look dated because most of it come from V8 Vantage. Everything is perfect except there are way too many buttons which might be a distraction when you’re driving. Also, you get an unlimited amount of options to make your ride look one off.

In comparison, Bentley has the best front headroom at 39.6 inches whereas front shoulder is best in Audi R8 at 55.1 inches, front legroom is best in Vantage at 42.8 inches. In the rear, only Bentley offers seats which are not desirable for adults.

Infotainment

Vantage’s infotainment system that is named Ami II gives a user interface that is very intuitive. Switchgears are made out of high-quality materials. Key features included Bluetooth that seamlessly connects a phone for a wide variety of options. The center stack is neatly designed but with a lot of buttons. Rest wherever you touch, it gives you luxury.

Cargo Volume

Cargo volume has never been a plus point of supercars. Aston Martin Vantage offers a mere 5 cu. ft. of space which is far from spacious or practical.

Cargo Volume (ft.3) 5.0 12.6 8.0 12.0

In comparison, the Bentley and the McLaren are the most practical with a cargo volume of 12.6 and 12 cu. ft. respectively.  Audi R8 and Vantage are on the lowest side and offer the least amount of practicality, at least on the paper.

2017 Aston Martin V12 Vantage S Exterior

"Some shapes are timeless, and with the Vantage still looking this good after more than a decade of production, it's clear this Aston Martin fits the description. The long, low hood and swollen rear fenders define power and grace, while the classic grille treatment makes its heritage unmistakable"-KBB

Dimensions and Weight

The 2017 V12 Vantage S is 172.6 inches long, 73.4 inches wide and 49.2 inches tall. Its low to the ground with 5 inches which give it a really good stance. The wheelbase of 102.4 inches provides ample room for 2 people, but its nowhere spacious to say the least.

The Audi R8 has better ground clearance at 6.3 inches giving it an edge on uneven road sections.

2017 Aston Martin V12 Vantage S Competition

2017 Aston Martin V12 Vantage S vs 2017 Bentley Continental GT Coupe

Bentley Continental GT is not a supercar but it’s one of those exclusive cars that embodies luxury. It comes loaded with features and features a W12 engine which is a rarirty nowadays. The car looks posh and is also practical in some sense. Plus, the name Bentley gives that extra oomph. However, a price tag of over $200,000 might affect your buying decision.

2017 Aston Martin V12 Vantage S vs 2017 Audi R8 Coupe

Audi R8 is a fun and a supercar that can be used every day. Its razor edge design with low slung stance gives it superb handling around corners. It carries a V10 engine that is insanely loud and savagely fast, and the DSG gearbox changes gears like melted butter. Interior ambhience is also good and mostly carbon fiber. Pricewise, it’s one of the more affordable supercars and is a supreme overall.

2017 Aston Martin V12 Vantage S vs 2017 McLaren 570GT

With the overall curb weight and performance in the same ballpark as the V12 Vantage S, the Mclaren surely packs some serious punch. It also enjoys a much better brand recall and on its day, can give serious fight to its other competitors. What lets the car down is the limited seating space and bone-jarringly stiff suspension. That said, the 570GT remains one of the best modern day supercars.

2017 Aston Martin V12 Vantage S Final Verdict

The 2017 Aston Martin V12 Vantage S is a beautiful car. With the V12 power-plant,  it grunts like no other and is a brisk tourer. The handling and ride quality is impeccable and gives it the tag of one of the best Aston Martins ever made. It does have some serious competition and even looks dated when compared but if you’re looking for speed and craftsmanship which reeks of individuality, look no further than the V12 Vantage.
