2017 Aston Martin V12 Vantage S Convertible competes with the likes of Continental GT and Audi R8 V10 Quattro Spyder. The ride lags behind its rivals in terms of combined fuel economy and wheelbase. Nonetheless, V12 Vantage S Convertible outshines the competition with elegant looks, powerful performance, and a multitude of options.

As such, the high-revving, non-turbocharged V12 here is a unique treat.- Edmunds

Engine and Transmission

The 2017 iteration of the Aston Martin Vantage S Convertible boasts of a  hearty 5.9L V12 motor, which is capable of 563 hp of power and 457lb-ft of torque. This engine comes with a 7-speed automatic transmission, but for purists, there is an option of 6-speed manual transmission too.

Bentley Continental GT bests V12 Vantage S Convertible in both engine power and torque.Though the W12 doesn't offer an exceptional performance, the combination of killer looks and a robust performance is certainly something of a scarcity to witness. The Audi R8 too is a formidable competitor, but has the least power and torque figures.

Acceleration

For accelerating to 60 MPH, the V12 Vantage S Convertible takes 3.8 seconds. This is better than the 4.4 seconds required by the Bentley Continental GT. Audi R8 Spyder, however, shoots to 60 MPH in 3.5 seconds only, despite having the least power figures. Explains how on-paper specs aren't enough to justify a car's performance!

Nonetheless, V12 Vantage S Convertible beats both Continental GT and R8 V10 Quattro Spyder in covering a quarter-mile. The Aston Martin V12 has a powerful acceleration, and every gear supports a steady acceleration, ensuring there are no hiccups in the process.

Ride and Handling

Most exotic sports cars rely on turbocharged engines. However, there are exceptions too, and Aston Martin V12 Vantage S is just one of those exceptions. Its high-revving V12 is a unique treat to racing enthusiasts. The 7-speed automatic transmission is receptive to acceleration, allowing for an excellent riding experience.

In order to ensure that the cabin stays jolt-free, 2017 Aston Martin V12 Vantage comes with an effectual suspension. The braking power is excellent, allowing the ride to halt as simply as it shoots to frantic speeds. Handling is sporty that fills the driver with confidence and the steering is equally effective.

Braking

2017 Aston Martin V12 Vantage S Convertible comes with a huge front brake that measures 15.7 inches. The rear brake however, is smaller, measuring 14.2 inches. The ride packs excellent braking power, partly thanks to its lower curb weight of 3671 lbs. This is much less compared to its class rivals, such as the Continental GT which weighs 5501 lbs.

During emergency braking requirements, V12 is able to lose all speed at a distance of 114 feet when decelerated fully from 60 MPH. This is slightly greater than the 111 feet required by the Audi R8 V10 Quattro Spyder.

2017 Aston Martin V12 Vantage S Convertible Fuel Economy

The 2017 incarnation of the V12 Vantage S Convertible offers a combined fuel economy of 14 mpg. Not impressive but acceptable considering the segment to which the ride belongs. This V12 engine returns a respectable 12 and 18 mpg in cities and highways, respectively.

The Bentley Continental GT offers a slightly better-combined mileage of 15 mpg. On the other hand, the Audi R8 V10 Quattro Spyder leads the pack with a combined fuel economy of 17 mpg. Considering the segment, you really don't need to care about fuel economy when you have more than 500 horses under the hood.

2017 Aston Martin V12 Vantage S Convertible Interior

The Vantage's interior is a curious mix of supple, high-quality leather and flimsy switchgear. The hand-pull parking brake is located next to the door and requires a strange action to engage and disengage. Rear visibility is poor, but thankfully a rearview camera is standard.-Edmunds

Seating and Comfort

2017 Aston Martin V12 Vantage S Convertible offers a headroom and legroom of 36.7 and 42.8 inches, respectively. Comparatively, Continental GT and Quattro Spyder offer 38.2 and 38.5 inches of headroom, respectively. Nonetheless, the legroom offered by V12 Vantage is the best in the league.

Aston Martin V12 along with Audi R8 Spyder offers a maximum seating for 2. Unlike its rivals, Bentley Continental GT can accommodate 4 people. The ride offers airy 38.2 inches of headroom in the back but falls short in offering ample legroom. As such, Continental GT offers a cramped rear backroom of 31.7 inches only.

Infotainment System

The 2017 iteration of the Aston Martin V12 comes with an updated infotainment system. The upgraded infotainment system features a new navigation system, in addition, to support for Apple CarPlay. However, the infotainment system still remains outdated as compared to contemporaries.

There is only a single USB port available with the infotainment system. Furthermore, the controls are hard to figure out in the beginning. A satellite radio comes standard with the infotainment system.

Interior Features

2017 Aston Martin V12 S Convertible flaunts an elegant cabin. In addition to the standard leatherette trim, there are several trims that you can choose among. The insides of the V12 Vantage S Convertible flaunts:

  • A tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel wrapped in simulated suede
  • Beautiful, detailed cabin
  • Column-mounted shift paddles
  • Effectual automatic climate control
  • Power-adjustable heated front seats
  • Standard leather-trimmed interior

Cargo Capacity

Storage capacity isn't a vital consideration for the sports car buyers. Anyways, 2017 Aston Martin V12 Vantage S Convertible offers 5 cubic feet of cargo capacity. For reference, this much storage capacity is enough for putting a single bag or a suitcase in there, nothing more. This, however, is better than the 4 cubic feet offered by the Audi R8 V10 Quattro Spyder.

Bentley Continental GT comfortably beats both V12 Vantage S Convertible and V10 Quattro Spyder when it comes to cargo capacity. The ride comes with a maximum cargo capacity of 9.1 cubic feet.

2017 Aston Martin V12 Vantage S Convertible Exterior

It looks great, fluid and yet strong in that distinctive way that has made an Aston Martin instantly recognizable to everyone. It also looks great whether the electric-operated top is down or up, although you cant see behind you if the top is up.-AutomobileMagazine

Dimension and Weight

2017 Aston Martin V12 Vantage S Convertible has compact dimensions. The ride flaunts the length, width, and height of 172.6, 73.4, and 49.2 inches, respectively. While the length and width are least in the competition, height is merely 0.2 inches more than the 49 inches supported by the Audi R8 Quattro Spyder. Aston Martin V12 has the least in league wheelbase of 102.4 inches.

V12 Vantage S flaunts a curb weight of 3671 lbs. This makes the ride lighter when compared to the Bentley Continental GT and the Audi R8 Spyder. Furthermore, the car boasts a ground clearance of 5 inches, which is acceptable. Bentley Continental offers better ground clearance of 5.5 inches, while the Audi R8 Spyder has mere 4.3 inches of the same.

Let's see what adds on to the stylish exterior of this car :

  • Standard 19-inch wheels
  • Xenon headlights
  • LED taillights
  • Power-folding heated mirrors
  • Carbon-fiber front splitters

2017 Aston Martin V12 Vantage S Convertible Safety

One of the downside for the V12 Vantage S Convertible is its poor reliability and security scorecard. The ride is neither rated by the IIHS or the NHTSA. Only a few security and reliability features are available with the ride and there are no optional upgrades available.

Safety Features

  • Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) with Track mode
  • Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Track mode
  • Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD)
  • Emergency Brake Assist (EBA)
  • Electrically adjustable sports seats with side airbags
  • Dual-stage driver/passenger front airbags

2017 Aston Martin V12 Vantage S Convertible Competition

2017 Aston Martin V12 Vantage S Convertible vs 2017 Audi R8 V10

With a robust 5.2L V10 engine at its disposal, Audi R8 V10 Quattro Spyder is yet another nimble ride. The ride offers an impressive 540 horsepower and an acceptable 398 lb.-ft. of torque. Like the Vantage S, R8 V10 Quattro flaunts a 7-speed automatic transmission mode.

V10 Quattro Spyder boasts an excellent acceleration, even better than the Aston Martin Vantage S. Spyder shoots to 60 MPH in 3.5 seconds, that's 0.3 seconds faster than the Vantage S. However, it is slow in terms of covering a quarter-mile. Audi R8 V10 Quattro Spyder offers a segment leading fuel economy of 17 mpg.

2017 Aston Martin V12 Vantage S Convertible vs 2017 Bentley Continental GT

2017 Aston Martin V12 Vantage S Convertible receives a great competition from the champion Bentley Continental GT. The ride boasts a 6.0L twin-turbocharged W12 engine. The robust engine produces 582 hp of power along with a remarkable 531 lb.-ft. of torque. Both feats are the most amongst the competition.

Bentley Continental GT requires 4.4 seconds for accelerating to 60 MPH. Unlike its class rivals, the ride relies on an 8-speed automatic transmission mode for gear-shifting. Being a continental, the ride offers roomy seating. Moreover, it offers a seating for 4, which is a rarity to the segment the ride belongs.

2017 Aston Martin V12 Vantage S Convertible Final Verdict

2017 Aston Martin V12 Vantage S Convertible is a powerful performer with spectacular looks. In fact, it is a small car fitted with the biggest engine offered by the Aston Martin. The result is, obviously, desirable. After its run of about a decade, the ride is now considered a classic sports coupe.

A price-tag above the $200k mark is not suitable for everyone. However, the ride is worth buying for those that can manage to spare such an amount. Further, there are additional options available for an additional cost to make the ride tailor-made for the buyer.
