Expert Review

CARHP Editorial February 20, 2019

The Audi A3 competes with BMW 230i, Ford Mustang and Chevy Camaro. The A3 convertible also faces some heat from small convertibles like Mini Cooper and Buick Cascada. With so many options available in the market, does the Audi A3 live up as viable choice?

2019 Audi A3 Convertible Features

The Audi A3 convertible is available in three well-appointed trim levels. From the entry level Premium variant to the top-spec Prestige variant, Audi has something for every buyer. The base trim comes with standard leather upholstery, dual zone climate control and safety features like rearview camera, front collision warning and automatic emergency braking.

The Premium plus trim adds bigger wheels, parking sensors, keyless ignition and entry and support for Apple Carplay and Android Auto for an additional expense of $3,400. If you want all the bells and whistles and splurge max on your A3 then the $47,100 Prestige variant brings in virtual cockpit, premium audio system and a suite of safety features.

We Recommend

For most the buyers we would recommend the base Premium trim with Quattro AWD, by spending $2,800 on the base trim you will have more power and added advantage of all-weather driving with the Quattro AWD system. The base trim offers good value for money and keeps the price from reaching towards another segment.

2019 Audi A3 Convertible Engine

“The 2.0-litre engine arrived with the 2016 facelift and boasts an excellent spread of refined torque. It’s only noisy right at the top end in that realm around 5000rpm where normal drivers never stray, or if you stand outside the car. For almost all occupants almost all of the time, it is more than sufficiently refined.”-Autocar

Engine and Transmission

Audi A3 is powered by a 2.0-liter mill which when equipped with FWD is tuned for 186 horsepower. Zipping to highway speed in this machine wouldn’t be an issue at all. The engine is mated to a 7-speed automatic transmission that does its duty well. Leave the transmission to its logic and it will guarantee seamless gearshifts. But things are different in the manual mode, there is a slight hesitation while shifting gears.

If you want more power then look no farther than the A3 cabriolet equipped with Audi’s Quattro all-wheel-drive system. The engine is tuned to deliver more power, the peak output is bumped to 228 hp.

In its class, 2019 Audi A3 convertible is quite underpowered. Its arch nemesis BMW 230i convertible offers more power albeit at a price premium. Ford Mustang and Chevy Camaro are leagues ahead. But when we take the comparison to the compact segment and compare the A3 with Mini Cooper, Fiat 124 and Mazda Miata, the Audi comes out with better power figures.

Acceleration

Audi A3 convertible rushes to the 60 marker in 6.6 seconds. The 2.0-liter engine is offered in a lower state of tune in the FWD trim. The turbocharged engine puts out the maximum torque at 1600 rpm. Driving the A3 in the urban jungle in its stop and go traffic scenarios would be easy due to the easily accessible torque at low rpm.

If you want to close the gap and improve your 0 to 60 mph time. The Quattro equipped variant runs the 0-60 mph in 5.9 seconds. With the all-wheel drive system the A3 convertible puts power to wheels in a much better way.

Mustang convertible is in another league, it smashes the 0-60 marker in just 5.0 seconds. It is closely followed by the BMW 2 series and the Chevy Camaro. In its base trim the Audi A3 convertible wouldn’t win any drag races but it will take care of daily driving needs without any problems.

Ride and Handling

Audi A3 convertible feels like a TT roadster with the added practicality. 2019 A3 convertible shares its underpinnings with the VW group’s MQB platform. Once behind the wheel, it doesn’t take much time decipher Audi’s intentions. Audi has prioritized stability over agility and handling. A3’s intentions are aligned with mass market preference of an easy to drive car. You can enjoy open top motoring but the steering and chassis lack the feedback to make it fun around the corners.

Braking

Audi A3 offers a 12.3-inch brake rotors at the front and 10.7-inch brake rotors at the rear. The data for the 2019 model is not available yet. With a curb weight of 3428 lbs. and all 4-disc brake setup. The A3 cabriolet is expected to offer good stopping power.

The Audi A3 convertible offers good fuel efficiency for its class. Other manufacturers are still chasing the benchmark set up by Audi. However when we bring smaller convertibles to the game, Fiat 124 and Mazda Miata are more frugal than the Audi A3.

2019 Audi A3 Convertible Interior

“Innovative technology is featured inside the high-quality cabin, including a trick digital gauge cluster and a motorized pop-up infotainment screen. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a 4G LTE–powered Wi-Fi hotspot are also available.”- CarandDriver

Seating and Comfort

Enter the cabin and you will greeted by quality of fittings that seem unreal for this segment. It has been put together, solidly. It would be an arduous task to point out panel gaps or inconsistent material. Touch the dashboard, poke the glove box and you would be happy to find soft touch materials.

The A3 convertible is really comfy space, at least for the front row. The driving position is good and with the adjustments on offer, it wouldn’t be difficult to find your favorite driving position. The switchgear has been laid out under the aegis of clinical German precision. Everything falls to your hand naturally and you would be amazed how less time you need to get accustomed to the interiors.

Infotainment

The entry level Premium trim comes with a 7.0-inch display and 10 speaker audio system. To take the in-cabin experience the optional Audi MMI infotainment system and touchpad with handwriting recognition. This system also comes with support for Apple Carplay and Android Auto. The audio experience is taken up to echelon with the 705 watts 14-speaker Bang and Olufsen sound system.

Interior Features

  • Dual zone automatic climate control
  • Acoustic folding roof (folds up to speeds up to 31 mph)
  • Four cup holders
  • Ambient LED interior lighting
  • Leather-wrapped gear selector
  • Dual adjustable front visors with lighted vanity mirrors

Cargo Capacity

Welcoming the A3 convertible to your garage will mean you need to sacrifice a bit on utility front. The minimalistic interior design also lacks space for small item storage. The convertible loses out on 2 doors and top but it doesn’t lose out on much of its cargo space. You can easily manage a weekend getaway if you pack really tight. The boot is only good for a couple of duffel bags.

2019 Audi A3 Convertible Exterior

“The A3's power soft top has a lot of real estate to cover from windshield to rear deck, and it shows in the leisurely 19.3 seconds required to power it down (20.5 seconds on the way up). The top stows neatly under its tonneau lid.”-Edmunds

Dimensions and Weight

One look at the A3 convertible and it wouldn’t be much difficult to dismiss the styling aesthetic of this convertible. The design heavily draws from the Audi A6 and we mean it in a good way. With the top down, the A3 cabriolet looks promising. The A3 wasn’t high on utility ever, and even with the hardware for the soft top there isn’t much to lose in terms of rear cargo space.

Dimensionally, the A3 cabriolet finds the middle ground between the larger convertibles like the Ford Mustang and compacts like Mini Cooper. A3 cabriolet’s soft top covers a lot of area when engaged but it can be easily tucked behind a tonneau lid. The power soft top takes 19.3 seconds to fold.

When we talk about the competition, the Chevy Camaro has an enormous wheelbase of 110.7-inches. Camaro is one of those convertibles which are high on utility and offer generous interior space for the passengers. Then there are convertibles like Fiat 124 and Mazda Miata which have sacrificed rear seating in favor of offering an unrivaled top down driving dynamics.

2019 Audi A3 Convertible Safety

Audi A3 convertible hasn’t been crash rated by either of the agencies. Although its sedan counterpart, the A3 sedan has been rated.

Safety Features

Audi A3 packs impressive safety technology. Some of these include the following:

  • Active rollover protection system
  • Electromechanical parking brake
  • Safety belt reminder for driver and passenger
  • Tire-pressure monitoring system
  • Electronic Stability Control with secondary collision brake assist and traction control
  • Anti-theft alarm

2019 Audi A3 Convertible Competition

Audi A3 vs BMW 230i

The Bavarian actually a better driver’s car. Even with an identical displacement (2.0-liter), the BMW is tuned for more power. When we talk of the 0-60 time, the 2 series convertible is faster than the Audi A3 by a margin of more than one second. The Beemer benefits from excellent driving dynamics. The Beemer offers a more practical boot and more usable space in the cabin. But all these niceties carry a premium tag of $ $41,100. And with optional equipment, you will easily cross the $ 50,000 threshold.

The 230i presents itself as a strong choice for an entry level sport car. The Beemer brings together lot of elements from its brethren. It effortlessly combines dynamic handling without the expense of comfort. The 230i completes its job as a daily driver and occasional performer.

Audi A3 vs Ford Mustang

The Ford Mustang is powered by a 2.3-liter engine that produces 310 horsepower and 350 lb-ft. of torque. The performance from this four-cylinder engine gives the larger V6 engines, a run for their money.

The Mustang becomes a little too much when you start testing the limits. In Sport+ and Race drive modes, the car goes under a transformation with its aggressive throttle response and heavy steering. The car loses out its refined nature and the exhaust note of the EcoBoost engine at redline isn’t a pleasing thing to hear.

Audi A3 vs Chevrolet Camaro

One from the holy trinity of classic muscle cars, the Camaro has an explosive powertrain which packs 275 horsepower. At a price point of 31,000 dollars the Camaro offers a very good price to performance ratio. In terms of cabin space, the Camaro is leagues ahead than the Audi A3. However, the 275-hp output would require you to frequent the gas station quite a lot.

2019 Audi A3 Convertible Final Verdict

At a sticker price of $38,900, Audi A3 convertible is your ticket to luxury. With the A3, Audi hasn’t made any compromises. The interior is savvy and in league of its own. The engine produces 186 horsepower. The power output might feel low but behind the wheel, Audi A3 doesn’t feel a slowpoke. The throttle response is crisp and low end torque helps to make the A3 a driver friendly car.

The Audi A3 is not a proper four seater, it is more like a 2+2 seater and rear seats are suitable for children. With A3’s large dimensions, you need to careful in narrow lanes or parking spots. This Audi runs a little low on utility, and its minimalistic form means you can’t carry much for the holiday.

If you are in the market for a convertible which can occasionally seat four and spoil you with best in segment fit and finish. Spend a little more to get a futuristic virtual cockpit and sound equipment to satisfy the audiophile in you. Then the Audi A3 should be high on your list.
