Detailed Review

From the year 2003 to today the Audi A3 hasn been a prime contender in its segment. The A3 set new standards for compact luxury cars and nothing has changed today as well. The Audi A3 is a compact, luxurious and a powerful convertible which isn't too heavy on the pocket. The 2017 Audi A3 got some new looks and techs to show off its style.

The Audi sure sets some new standards in the compact convertible car market, and the attention calls a lot of competition as well. The BMW 230i convertible , Volkswagen Beetle Convertible and the Buick Cascada are other competitors in this class.

We recommend

The Standard Audi A3 premium has a lot of features and offers a lot of comfort and luxury features at its price bracket as well. Getting additional All-wheel drive will boost up the car's performance and drive experience. Well, the other variants have no engine upgrades but they are more convenient, so go for it if it suits your pocket.

Engine and transmission

The 2017 Audi A3 convertible features an all-new 2.0 TFSI 4-cylinder engine. It has an S-tronic 7-speed dual clutch transmission and a front-wheel drivetrain. This 186 hp powerhouse sure packs a punch as it produces 221 lb.-ft. of torque but it is more of a fuel efficient engine than being a performance type.

The BMW 230i convertible features the most powerful engine in the whole class follower by Buick Cascada. The Volkswagen might feature the least powerful powerhouse but considering the price, its perfect. The A3 and Cascada have sufficient power for their needs but the BMW well if they make a box with wheels they make sure that it's the most powerful box with wheels in the history.

Featuring a 186 hp powerhouse producing 221 lb.-ft. of torque with a forward-wheel drivetrain race from 0-60 mph in 6.9 sec with a quarter mile margin of 15.5 secs is pretty impressive. It's not the best in the class but not the worst as well.

The BMW 230i has undoubtedly the best in class acceleration and the Beetle got some pretty impressive time as but the Cascada well it's disappointing considering the torque and power it features.

Handling and steering

The Audi A3 offers smooth acceleration but also goes wild when you are hard on pedals. Well, the forward wheel drive affects its handling a lot in many positive ways. It offers smooth and precise cornering, easy acceleration and keeps stable when accelerating hard. The A3 also features several drive modes which affect the power output, steering, and transmission to suit your style.

The steering feels great, is pretty responsive and precise has a little heavy feel to it, well it sure changes when you change the drive modes. The Four-wheel independent suspension with both front and rear stabilizer bars offers more balanced rides and are more than happy to soak up any bumps for you.

Braking

The Audi A3 has a small compact body with a curb weight of only 3428lbs. thanks to which it has small brakes but high braking power. It takes only 109 ft. to stop an Audi A3 from 60-0 mph. The A3 features 12.3/10.7 inch ventilated front disc/solid rear disc brakes with a 4-wheel anti-lock braking system. Emergency braking assist and stability control are some braking safety features.

All the other competitors feature brakes of almost the same size as the BMW leading the segment with its insane braking Prowers while the Cascada doesn't fail to disappoint us.

2017 Audi A3 Convertible Fuel Economy

7.7/10

The enhanced A3 2.0 TFSI engine is way more fuel efficient than its predecessors and among its competitors. It has an average mileage of 25/34 mpg in city/highways with a combined mileage of 25 mpg. The car's mileage also depends on the way you ride and in what mode you are riding in.

The Buick Cascada is the least efficient vehicle but the BMW got extremely good fuel efficiency even after featuring a powerful engine, well the Beetle is not bad either.

Seating and Comfort

The A3 is a 2-door sedan that can Theoretically accommodate 4 people. It's theoretically because there is literally no leg room for rear seat passengers but this convertible is perfect for 2 people. The 3-spoke steering wheel is full with mounted control for easier access, it has 6-way adjustable front row seats with multi-level heating. Well, there is not much for the rear seats though.

Overall, the interiors look rich and refine and are pretty comfy and luxurious. It is totally same for the A3 sedan as for upgrades it has some infotainment upgrades with some basic design changes for the steering wheel, gauge cluster. It has an easy to use straightforward interface.

Infotainment System

The A3 gets an upgraded MMI system. The menu structure has been redesigned to make it more user-friendly and say to use. Its infotainment system sure features a touch-sensitive touchpad but center console also has a control knob to move around the infotainment system. Several buttons are mounted on the steering wheel and center console for easy access to multimedia and other features.

Well, the infotainment system sure gets more convenient and advanced as you move up to other variants not to mention the virtual cockpit with gesture controls and many more.

  • AM/FM stereo
  • Auxiliary Audio Input

Cargo/Trunk volume

The A3 small body design makes it suffer for the cargo volume which might be one of the biggest flaws of this car. It only offers a cargo space of 9.9 cubic feet and the shape is such that you can't put bigger objects at all. The trunk also features emergency trunk release.

Well, the Beetle offers only 7.1 cubic feet of cargo space which is the least in the class and I wonder why I will put something so small into the trunk. The BMW again takes the lead with the best in class cargo volume which is good for compact cars but not enough.

2017 Audi A3 Convertible Exterior

8.7/10

The A3 convertible has a smooth, slant simple body design,, it is low, aerodynamic and looks rich. There are not many changes in exteriors compared to the old 2015 convertible except the LED lighting and some curves, add a hard roof and it will become an A3 sedan. The windscreen is a little lower for a change and it has a very cool looking stylish side profile.

The A3 is 174.1 inches long and 77.2 inch wide with a body height of 55.5 inches perfect for a convertible. It has 6.4 inches of ground clearance which is good and a small 102.2 inch of wheelbase but the car is still pretty stable. A compact body for a compact luxury car but it costs cabin space as well as rear space.

2017 Audi A3 Convertible Safety

7.4/10

Safety Features

The A3 convertible features some hi-end safety features with all the basic safety features but not having a hard-roof put it into a little disadvantage. Starting from the cruise control that maintains a safe distance from other cars, the emergency brake assists that stops the car if no steering activity is detected. The 4-wheel ABS keeps the car straight while braking hard.

Not to mention the stability and traction control which keeps the car stable while cornering or in case of over/under-steer. Basic safety features like Daytime LED lights, rear-view camera, Dual-stage airbags, engine immobilizer, and post/pre-collision safety system also comes in standard in this car. There is no data on the rating of the safety system from NHSTA and IIHS.

  • StabiliTrak stability control system
  • Automated rollover pop-up bars high-strength steel, located behind rear seats

2017 Audi A3 Convertible Competition

BMW 230i Convertible vs Audi A3 Cabriolet

The BMW 230i features 248hp powerhouse with a torque output of 258 lb.-ft. It has an8-speed automatic transmission and beats the A3 for good in terms of performance. In this whole section, the BMW 230i is the best in the class convertible and excels the Audi A3 in every single aspect.

It is powerful, efficient, has better acceleration, cargo space, braking power and is more attractive. Simply put the BMW 230i is better than the Audi A3 and still costs only an additional $1300.

Volkswagen Beetle vs Audi A3 Cabriolet

The Volkswagen Beetle is a $29,215 convertible. Compared to the Audi it is more affordable and has some satisfactory performance at its price bracket. It is less powerful, less fuel efficiency, weak braking power, little slow acceleration, and very little cargo volume. The Audi excels the Volkswagen in every aspect but it\u2019s not the worst car in the whole class.

Well, It does have the worst cargo space in the whole car market of the convertible but it is still way better than the Buick Cascada.

2017 Audi A3 Convertible Final Verdict

The Audi A3 Cabriolet is one amazing convertible in today's car market. It is affordable, sleek, compact, efficient, luxurious, powerful and its versatility is impressive. The Quattro might be a little costly but worth the effort. All of it variants have some interesting additional features and upgrades as well. The A3 being a convertible performs same as the A3 sedan.

It might have some flaws like cargo space or the interior comforts but the rest is just perfect. The BMW 230i might excel Audi but it has its own flaws too. The A3 outshine the Volkswagen and the Cascada as it lives up to its names. It is a perfect car for weekend trips, long drives or travelling places for two people but if you are buying it for family or daily use than you might rethink about it.
