All-Electric-Vehicles (EVs) are the next big thing in the automotive industry. Every manufacturer has plans for electrification of their lineup. Audi also wants a slice of this cake. And Audi is working tirelessly to bring out the best out of the EV technology. The 2018 Audi A3 Sportback e-Tron plug-in hybrid is one such vehicle that has come forward hoping to cement the future of hybrid vehicles. Audi A3 e-tron is powered by internal combustion and an electric motor, working together. The combined system output of 204 hp sent to the front wheels via a 6-speed automatic transmission. On the inside, the E-tron cabin is more or less similar to its A3 brethren which means you can expect a top-notch fit and finish. At a starting price of $38,900, the plug-in hybrid is actually one of the costlier ones in its segment. In terms of price, it's belittled only by the BMW i3 which is a whopping $5500 dearer than the A3 Sportback e-tron.

2017 Audi A3 e-tron Sportback Engine

9.5/10
"This plug-in hybrid accelerates away from stoplights with some spirit, courtesy of the extra bump of torque provided by its electric motor. The automated transmission shifts rapidly and unobtrusively." - Edmunds"

The Audi e-Tron is powered by an inline-four gasoline engine that is rated at 150 horsepower and 184-lb-ft. of torque. This gasoline engine is duly supported by a battery-powered electric motor which produces 102 horsepower and 243 lb-ft. of torque.

The combined system output stands out at 204 horsepower and 258 lb-ft. of torque. The Audi e-Tron does it share of saving the ice-caps with its sophisticated gasoline-electric powertrain. A 6-speed transmission transfers the power to the front wheels.

It wouldn't come as a surprise that the Audi e-tron decimates the competition in every aspect of performance. Audi's whopping 204 hp is the undisputed champion of this segment. BMW i3 is the only competitor that comes close to the Audi e-tron.

Acceleration

Audi A3 e-tron shows brisk manners as it comes off the stoplight. The additional push from the electric motor definitely a welcome change from the run of the mill A3s. The 2017 Audi e-tron rushes to the coveted 60 mph mark within 7.6 seconds. Even with the additional equipment on board (electric motor and battery), the A3 e-tron holds itself steadfast.

When we talk about the competition, BMW i3 manages to pull off an incredible 7.2-second dash to 60 mph. This is due to the instant torque from the all-electric powertrain. The slowest of the lot , Toyota Prius Prime takes 10.2 seconds to reach 60 mph.

Ride and Handling

Ride comfort is great, the cabin adheres to calmness. On complete electric power, the e-tron is silent but as the gasoline engine kicks in, it becomes more audible. Even when the gasoline engine is up and running, the cabin is not as intrusive as other plugin hybrid cars.

The Audi A3 e-tron has gained considerable weight with its new components. The e-tron weighs in at 3616 lbs. This weight takes a toll on the handling characteristics of the e-tron. When compared to its A3 brethren, the e-tron stands up poorly to them.

When we talk about comfort, the e-tron responds positively to bumps and road undulations. E-tron is able to soak up these impacts and leave the cabin a desired space to be in. For your daily drives, the e-tron is well settled and comfortable.

Braking

Even with a curb weight of 3616 lbs. the Audi A3 e-tron pulls of respectable deceleration numbers. The e-tron can decelerate from to 60 mph to standstill under 123 feet. The brakes aren't grabby and respond well in a linear manner.

When we consider the completion, the Chevy Volt manages to pull off the tightest numbers. Volt comes to a standstill from 60 mph within 120 feet. While the BMW i3 and Toyota Prius Prime perform similarly when decelerated from 60 mph.

2017 Audi A3 e-tron Sportback Fuel Economy

With ever stringent emission standards, electrification has been a prevalent trend in the industry. As electricity is a much cleaner energy, there are lesser implications on the environment. The Audi e-tron does its job of saving the ice-caps. The e-tron boasts of a combined mpg-e of 83 which is phenomenal. Actual mileage will greatly depend upon on how much all-electric driving you would do.

On complete electric power, the e-tron only manages 16 miles until the gasoline engine kicks in.

The BMW i3 pulls off an even better combined mpg-e of 118. While the Toyota Prius Prime manages a 54 mpg-e.

Seating and Comfort

The Audi A3 e-tron offers generous front seat space. The rear seats can be a tight squeeze for full-size adults. Audi e-tron has one of the best-finished cabins in this segment. The quality of materials is top notch and every switch has a slick action. Audi has gone with clean and minimalistic interior design. All the important controls are placed within the reach of the driver.

2017 Audi A3 e-tron Sportback Competition

BMW i3 vs Audi A3 Sportback e-tron

The BMW i3 is a more electric focused car while the Audi A3 e-tron is a hybrid car which relies equally on both the engines. The BMW offers an electric range of 150 miles while the A3 offers only 20 miles. Importantly, BMW announces itself as a hybrid vehicle with its quirky blue exteriors while there is not a lot that differentiates the e-tron from a regular Audi

The verdict on this is a tough one and more likely to change according to the buyer's need. If you want a secondary vehicle for intra city travel goes for the i3, if this is going to be your only car, the A3 e-tron should be your pick.

Chevrolet Volt  vs Audi A3 Sportback e- tron

The Chevy Volt is a worthy rival to the Audi A3 e-tron. They both have essentially same genetic makeup. The range on electric-only mode offered by the Volt is around 53 miles while the Audi does much less in comparison.

All in all, if a good true electric experience is what you desire, the Volt is what you should buy. If you're looking for something more premium in nature then the Audi A3 e-tron should be your next buy.

Toyota Prius Prime vs Audi A3 Sportback e- tron

The Prius has long been a poster boy for hybrid cars and for good reason. Simplicity is the name of the game when it comes to the Prius. But, it's anything but simple on the inside as it offers a long list of creature comforts and even the exteriors follow an eccentric styling.

Clearly put forward, if you're in the market for a vehicle that's easy to own, tried and tested and vehicle longevity is what you desire, Prius could be a worthy contender while if you want something much more premium and exclusive, the Audi wins it hands down.

2017 Audi A3 e-tron Sportback Final Verdict

The A3 Sportback e-tron is a great car from Audi and it shows that Audi has embraced the EV technology and is serious about their plans. The A3 e-tron blends in the executive and premium sentiments of an Audi with a cleaner, practical and more fuel efficient way of propulsion.

Audi A3 e-tron offers a gasoline-electric powertrain which churns out a healthy 204 horsepower and 258 lb-ft. of torque. On paper, these numbers are better than the competition. But the A3 e-tron offers a unique blend of hybrid and hatchback. There is reasonable power on the tap of a pedal and there is EPA fuel efficiency of 83 mpg-e.

The A3 e-tron is a groundbreaking vehicle if you look at it in a certain way. But, somehow, it still fails to garner the support from the enthusiasts in us primarily due to its moderate driving dynamics. The Audi A3 Sportback has all the potential in the world to be your primary car but whether it should be is a bigger question and one that you'll have to answer yourself.
