2017 Audi A5 Complete In-depth Review & Buying Guide

Introduced in the year 2008, the Audi A5 Coupe turned out to be an attention seeker representing the perfect image of a luxury sports car. This might be the reason that even in 2017, its manufacturers still prefer the A5 to be the same way.

Equipped with the characteristics and features of its 2008 model, the 2017 Audi A5 Coupe still stands as a competitor for other luxury sports cars of its class such as the BMW 430i xDrive Coupe and the Mercedes Benz C300 coupe. All that has changed over the years is that it was a special luxury sports car back then and now it's no more special.

Expert Review

Overall Rating

The 2017 Audi A5 Coupe with a base price of $41,150 is powered by a 2.0 Liter turbocharged 4 cylinder engine paired with 6-speed manual transmission and an All-Wheel-Drive. This engine provides the A5 with a horsepower of 220 hp and a torque of 258 lb-ft. The "don't fix what's not broken" formula has worked out pretty well for Audi till now and our fondness for the car has only grown over the years.

2017 Audi A5 Features

7.9/10

The 2017 Audi A5 Coupe is available in two trims, one is the A5 Sport Manual and the other is the A5 Sport Tiptronic. The base trim i.e., Sport Manual is available for a price of $41,150, although its higher trim i.e., the Sport Tiptronic is available at just a $1,000 more than the base trim. However, both of them are equipped with the 2.0 Liter turbocharged I4 engines paired with an All-Wheel-Drive system.

The difference between the trims is the different transmissions available in them. The A5 Sport Manual, as its name suggests is available with 6 manual speed transmission. On the other hand, the Sport Tiptronic has an 8-speed automatic Tiptronic speed transmission. This latter transmission lets the driver override the automatic mode with ease.

We recommend For those who have a craze for a sports car, you can go for the manual trim. But if you want it to be your luxury car, you can always pay a $1,000 extra and go for the Sport Tiptronic for a more smooth and easy ride.

2017 Audi A5 Engine

8.4/10

“The Audi A5 coupe and convertible are sleek and supple, providing relaxed yet sporty dynamics in a tidy package.”- The Car Connection

Engine and Transmission

The 2017 Audi A5 Coupe is powered by a 2.0 Liter turbocharged 4 cylinder inline engine. This engine has a capability of producing a horsepower of 220hp and a torque of 258 lb-ft. So, it can be said that though this engine is not very powerful, it's adequate enough to make it a sports car. Apart from this, the engine is paired with an All-Wheel-Drive system that makes your ride smooth on all roads.

However, it is available with two transmissions that becomes a differentiating factor between its trims. While the base trim is equipped with a 6-speed manual transmission, its higher trim is equipped with an 8-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission.

Horsepower 220 hp 248hp 241hp
Torque 258 lb-ft 258 lb.-ft. 273 lb.-ft

The 2017 Audi A5 Coupe is not so powerful as compared to its competitors i.e., BMW 430i xDrive Coupe and Mercedes-Benz C300 Coupe. However, its torque is comparative to that of the BMW 430i xDrive Coupe.

Acceleration

The 2017 A5 coupe has a sluggish acceleration. The base trim reaches a speed of 60 MPH in 6.3 seconds and crosses the quarter milestone in 14.9 seconds. In fact, even the Tiptronic trim takes 6.1 seconds to accelerate to a speed of 60 MPH.

The A5 Coupe doesn’t give a satisfactory performance when compared to the BMW 430i xDrive Coupe and the Mercedes Benz C300 4Matic Coupe. However, it crosses a quarter mile with just a difference of a few nanoseconds after the Merc C300 Coupe.

Ride and Handling

The 2017 Audi has a very firm suspension along with a standard All-Wheel-Drive. This becomes a confidence factor for the drivers while driving on any terrain. That is the reason this coupe has been known for its well balanced, comfortable and sharp handling over the years. The A5's engine is tuned more towards comfort which is pretty evident whilst cruising down an open stretch as compared to the sportily grunting S5.

The ride quality remains when serene even at high speed because of the four-link suspension and lightweight aluminum bits.

Braking

Braking The 2017 A5 coupe has a 12.6 inches front brake and 11.8 inches rear brake that brings this 3483 lbs heavy car to a halt. Apart from that its Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) is equipped with Electronic Brake-pressure Distribution (EBD) and brake assist that reduces the jerk during emergency braking situations. Its 60-0 MPH braking performance is not available. However, its brakes are small in size when compared to that of the BMW 430i xDrive and the Merc C300.

2017 Audi A5 Interior

“Front passengers will appreciate the well shaped seats that provide plenty of support over extended trips.”- Edmunds

Seating and Comfort

This 4 seater luxury sports car though is compact from the outside, looks comparatively spacious and comfortable on the inside. However, its rear seating might become a bit of a problem due to its limited space. The A5 has the lowest rear seat space area which is behind its competitors by at least an inch making it cramped.

Cargo volume

The compact style of the 2017 Audi A5 Coupe has a tremendous effect on its Trunk Volume. It has a Trunk Volume of 12.2 cu.ft. That’s actually quite enough to fit in your luggage for a weekend trip.

Though the BMW 430i xDrive Coupe maximum trunk space due to its different interior body styling, the trunk of the Merc C300 and Audi A5 are quite compatible.

“Audi has mastered the art of designing conservatively attractive cars, and the 2017 A5 coupe is a prime example.”- KBB

Dimension and Height

The 2017 Audi A5 Coupe, though aged, still looks handsome as ever. With a length of 182.1 inches, a width of 73.0 inches and a height of 54 inches, the A5 looks similar to its predecessors. Audi has always been conservative in terms of styling and their understated design looks wise and goes fast. The unmistakable Audi grille is accentuated by beautiful LED headlights and bold lines running from front to the rear.

2017 Audi A5 Competition

Audi A5 Coupe vs BMW 430i xDrive  Coupe

The BMW 430i xDrive Coupe is the upgraded version of the 2016 428i xDrive of the 4 series whereas the 2017 Audi A5 Coupe is not an upgraded version of its predecessors. It is much more like the 2016 or in fact the 2015 model.  This is the reason, compared to the BMW 4 Series, the Audi A5 is technologically much backward. All the Audi A5 has to boast is its handsome looks and adequate performance inherited from its predecessors which was once considered as special. These are what makes it stand in the competition with the BMW 340i xDrive Coupe. Although the BMW 430i xDrive has an upper hand in almost all the aspects.

Audi A5 Coupe vs Mercedes-Benz C300 4Matic Coupe

The Mercedes Benz C300 4Matic Coupe has not been upgraded for the past two years. Still, it can be considered more tech-friendly when compared to the Audi A5 which is in its first generations since 2008. When it comes to the performance, the Mercedes Benz C300 is a tad better performer than the Audi A5 coupe. On the other hand, it being less thirsty when compared to the 2017 Audi A5 coupe makes it a more economical option in the long run.

2017 Audi A5 Final Verdict

The 2017 Audi A5 Coupe can be considered a rusty performer for its present day’s competition. Though it’s handsome and gives an adequate performance, it’s not as impressive as it was in its earlier years. This makes the auto enthusiasts consider its competitors which give a better performance for just a tad higher price. All in all the A5 is showing signs of aging. Let's see what the 2018 overhaul has in store for us.
