Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

Now in its second generation, the 2020 Audi A5 is available in three different body styles, with the coupe being the most attractive layout of all. This midsize German two-door car is equipped with plenty of features that make it stand out from the rest along with a zesty little engine and extremely fantastic exteriors. Having said that, the competition is pretty strong with other cars like the BMW 430i Coupe and the Mercedes-Benz C 300 Coupe with another very close rivalry coming in from the Infiniti Q60 3.0t Luxe.

The 2020 Audi A5 Coupe comes in three different trims. The base Premium trim has got all the basic needs covered. The mid-level Premium Plus offers a little more, whereas the high-end Prestige trim has truly intriguing features. Starting from $42,000, all the trims have the same standard technical specifications, while the exterior, interior, and a few aesthetic changes can be observed as the hierarchy proceeds. The distribution of features across the three trims is given in the table below.

Optional carbon fiber trunk lid spoiler

Which trim should you buy?

It does not matter which trim you choose, especially in the 2020 Audi A5 lineup since all the trims are plentifully equipped. The one that we would recommend is the base Premium trim because it gets most of the features that can be seen in the other two columns. Only a couple of less important things like stainless steel pedal caps, Bang & Olufsen audio system, and a few driver aids are not included.

Engine and Performance

The 2020 Audi A5 Coupe drives using a 2.0L TFSI turbocharged in-line 4-cylinder engine that is standard across the lineup. The engine manages to provide 248 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque. This tiny, power-packed engine is paired to a smooth 7-speed S-Tronic automatic transmission, which sends power to all wheels as the Quattro system is standard on the 2020 Audi A5.

The A5 Coupe can reach from 0 to 60 MPH in just a little more than 5-and-a-half seconds, while the quarter-mile timing is precisely 14.0 seconds with a speed of 99 MPH at the instant. While the engine is capable of going faster, the top speed is electronically limited to 130 MPH. All the rivals except the Infiniti also come with a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, whereas the Q60 holds a V6 under the hood.

Though it misses out on a few numbers in terms of power, the A5 is pretty close to Mercedes in terms of acceleration figures. Although the C 300 completes a quarter-mile faster than the Audi, both have the same limited top speed of 130 MPH. On the other hand, the BMW has got the least power with the best top speed, whereas the Q60 has got the best power and torque numbers, but the amount of performance delivered is nearly the same. When comparing the price tag, the Mercedes C 300 is the most expensive option available.

How well does the 2020 Audi A5 Coupe handle?

The Audi A5 Coupe has a simple and stable ride quality with a four-wheel independent standard steel suspension. A multi-link mechanism is what joins all of the wheels to the chassis and takes up all the surface irregularities. Moreover, front and rear stabilizer bars are also standard on all the trims. At low speeds, the ride is calm and composed, whereas, at highway speeds, the coupe might get a little rough. Also, an optional sports suspension is offered that reduces the ride height up to 23 mm and offers a stiffer set up to feel more of the road.

Talking about handling, the coupe from Germany is just lively to handle. A three-spoke steering wheel that is partially wrapped in leather feels very premium to touch, whereas an electromechanical steering system gives a precise output. This system makes the 2020 Audi A5 turn a complete circle measuring 37.7 feet in diameter. The A5 has a charm of its own but if you want to go all out in terms of riding and handling, the performance variants are available to be owned.

Braking Performance

All the Audi A5s are equipped with 4-wheel ventilated disc brakes with all safety systems like the ABS, EBD, and many more. The front disc rotors measure 13.3-inches in diameter whereas the rear brakes are 13.0-inches in diameter. The front rotors are clamped upon by powerful 4-piston brake calipers designed in-house by the German manufacturer, which makes this 3,725 lbs vehicle stop in just about 160 feet when decelerating from 70 MPH to a complete stop.

Having the best brakes rotors and decent curb weight, Audi has made its coupe stop way before any of the competitors. On the other hand, the BMW 430i stops nearly 10 feet after the A5, while the C 300 coupe also has almost the same stopping performance as the BMW. The Q60 will have poor braking performance because it has both smaller brakes and the heaviest curb weight.

Fuel Economy

The 2020 Audi A5 Coupe can carry a maximum of 15.3 gallons in its fuel tank, which is quite a bit low. However, the coupe from Germany has a brilliant engine, and besides providing good power, it also has great MPG numbers. In the city, the estimated fuel economy is 24 MPG, while cruising on the highway would give an impressive 32 MPG. In combined scenarios, the coupe manages to offer 27 MPG, which combined with the 15.3 gallons of fuel tank results in a combined range of 413 miles.

The A5 has got the best MPG numbers but has a very limited fuel tank capacity, which affects the range. The BMW has got the best highway MPG, whereas the other two values are close to the A5, and it is the same with the C 300 Coupe. The Mercedes goes way far because it is equipped with a bigger fuel tank, speaking of which, the Infiniti Q60 offers the best range with the least MPG figures, only because it has got the best fuel tank capacity.

The cabin in the 2020 Audi A5 Coupe has got decent interiors, and the German manufacturer has worked upon the materials as well. In addition to this, the coupe has got many features as standard as well. Starting with the dashboard, the coupe has leatherette interiors with gloss black elements and a wood trim that covers most of the part on the front of the dash and the center console. While detailing is done in satin-finished chrome, the buttons and knobs are placed ergonomically.

The A5 Coupe allows seating for four. Starting from the base trim, the front bucket seats are 8-way power-adjustable heated seats. The rear has a 40/20/40 split-folding bench seat that makes enough space for three adults to fit in comfortably, additionally, heated rear seats is an option. Moreover, there are rear air-conditioning vents and a folding center armrest to provide the best comfort wherever one sits in the coupe. Talking about cargo capacity, the trunk is slightly limited to meet the body styling, whereas there are good-sized door bins, a fairly huge glove box, and four firm cup-holders that will hold all of those necessary items needed while traveling.

The front seats can be upgraded to 12-way power-adjustable and driver’s seat memory. There is less bolstering on the seats, which might throw its occupants out of their seating position. Nevertheless, all the seating surfaces are wrapped in leather, while leather-Alcantara and perforated leather surfaces are offered an option. Standard creature comforts in the coupe include a power sunroof, three-zone climate control, auto-dimming rearview mirror, and ambient LED lighting, making the interiors a nice place to be in.

A low roofline makes the Audi have lowered headroom, while its competitors have a lot of it. The best interior room is offered in the BMW, which also has room to carry the most cargo. While the Audi has a better rear room than the C 300, it also has much more space in the trunk. Moreover, the Q60 has the best legroom and a decent shoulder room, but it has the least cargo space. Key interior features include:

  • Power-adjustable heated front seats
  • 40/20/40 split rear seats
  • Power sunroof
  • Three-zone climate control
  • Auto-dimming rearview mirror
  • Ambient LED lighting

What's there to keep you entertained?

For 2020, the new addition is the infotainment system, which is now a 10.1-inch touchscreen that feels pretty solid and is stuck right in the center of the dashboard. While the display has high-resolution, it also gets good graphics and animation. The interface is pretty easy to use and is highly sensitive to touch. In the front of the steering wheel sits the Audi virtual cockpit that has a massive 12.3-inch full-color screen that has an awesome display and is the best way to communicate with the driver. It can be easily operated using the steering wheel controls, and the whole center-mounted screen can nearly be brought into the driver’s field of view.

All the trims get a standard 10-speaker system that makes about 180 watts of output and provides good sound. However, Audi offers an optional Bang & Olufsen 19-speaker 755-watt premium audio system that delivers the best of it. Also, all modern devices can be integrated with the infotainment system with enough connectivity features as standard, regardless of the trim. Some of them are mentioned below:

  • Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatible
  • HD Radio with FM/AM player
  • Bluetooth streaming audio
  • USB type-A and type-C ports
  • MMI navigation plus with voice recognition system (optional)
  • SiriusXM with 90-day trial subscription (optional)
  • Audi phone box - signal booster and wireless charging (optional)

The new Audi A5 Coupe has a conceptual design; it is very attractive, and at the same time, it does not get too showy. Starting off the front, the Singleframe grille has a very catchy honeycomb design on it. The headlights also have a well-shaped, minimalistic, and sharp design that looks moderately aggressive, just how the car performs. The character lines on the hood have become much more detailed than before, while the front bumper has a few additional pieces to make it look sportier with a few fake vents.

Taking a look from the side, the coupe’s roofline gets the first attention. The 18-inch aluminum-alloy wheels also have a spectacular design. Moreover, the body-colored, heated, power-adjusting ORVMs and LED turn signal indicators give it the premium, high-end look, even to the base model. Additionally, a massive single-piece rear fender just shows the craftsmanship put behind in making this coupe. The rear looks familiar and elegant as always with its striking LED taillights, while the trunk has a simple layout with a huge rear bumper that also includes a dual chrome-tip exhaust.

Wheelbase (in)

While the Infiniti has the longest wheelbase, it is nearly the same size as the Audi A5, which turns out to be the lengthiest coupe but also has the least height at the same time. The Q60 is the widest of all, while the BMW 430i has the most compact dimensions but is way far off the ground. Meanwhile, the C 300 is the tallest but also the closest to the ground, and together with BMW, both of them have nearly the same wheelbase as well. Key exterior highlights include:

  • 18-inch aluminum-alloy wheels
  • Heated and power-adjusting ORVMs
  • LED turn signals
  • Dual chrome tip exhaust
  • Honeycomb Singleframe grille
  • Heat-insulating glass for side windows

The A5 Coupe has a multi-material construction with steel and aluminum being the two major components of the chassis. This construction in the unibody type makes the whole coupe have a strong and rigid structure that can withstand even severe crashes. In addition to this, the A5 Coupe is protected by passive means, whereas plenty of active safety features are standard with Audi pre-sense basic and front in the list. Audi also offers almost all of the general driver assistance features as an option in the A5 Coupe. Key safety features include:

  • Audi connect CARE Emergency SOS
  • Audi Side Assist Blind Spot Sensor
  • Audi pre sense basic and Audi pre sense rear
  • Electronic Brake-pressure Distribution(EBD) and brake Assist
  • Advanced Airbag protection System with 6 airbags
  • Electromechanical Parking brake

2020 Audi A5 Coupe vs. 2020 BMW 430i Coupe

The BMW 4 Series coupe appears a little lousy when put beside the A5 coupe because the brand has not updated the 430i’s looks. However, BMW’s coupe is more compact when measured. In terms of performance, the A5 has an edge over the 430i coupe. Talking about interiors, the quantity and quality of materials in BMW match the marque of the A5. Nevertheless, Audi has decorated its cabin better than the BMW by placing all of it in the right spot. Both of them have comfortable seats, but the 430i makes more room for occupants as well as cargo. Having said that, the Audi A5 coupe has got a better infotainment system, while safety is taken care of equally by both brands.

2020 Audi A5 Coupe vs. 2020 Mercedes-Benz C 300 Coupe

The Mercedes C 300 is another attractive coupe that gains attention just by its looks. With both of them retaining their signature look, the Mercedes is made from clean and bold curves whereas the Audi A5 has a simple but strong styling all over the body. Moreover, it is a very close fight between the A5 and the C 300 when it boils down to performance as both outperform the other in equal terms. Having said that, both brands offer great comfort and plenty of features in their respective coupe’s. Also, the A5 and the C 300’s infotainment system is at par, whereas the Audi has better safety features offered.

2020 Audi A5 Coupe vs. 2020 Infiniti Q60

The Infiniti Q60 has got the most powerful and performing engine in the segment. It is the fastest accelerating coupe, while the Audi is just a millisecond slower but catches up very well later. The Q60 has got sporty and strong-looking exteriors, but it does not beat the premium appearance that the Audi A5 has. Talking about interiors, the Q60 focuses more on being sporty and has got heavy bolstered seats while its signature interior styling continues in this coupe as well. A curvy approach to the dashboard might look amusing in front of Audi’s well-placed layout that is decorated with different materials. Having said that, the Q60’s infotainment is a better fit into the cabin but is not as simple to operate as in the Audi.

Final Verdict

The Audi A5 has been a perfect balance between a straightforward coupe that also comes with an abundance of premium touches to it. The materials used inside the cabin and the overall build quality take the coupe up a notch. The performance offered is the key in the 2020 Audi A5 Coupe. The rivals in the competition are also great options, and there is nothing wrong with either of the options. However, we recommend this coupe, especially to young couples that like driving around in some punchy and comfortable coupe.
