The Audi A5 is offered in three different body styles: a four-door hatchback called the Sportback, a two-door coupe, and a convertible. The convertible version has a soft top and comes with a starting price tag of $50,400 which can go up to $61,150 for the topmost Prestige trim. All trims have a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 engine which has been newly married with an electric motor this year. There have been few additions in the safety and infotainment sections as well.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

Inside the cabin, the design of the interior is immaculate but could have been better. On the outside, the design language balances any disappointment one might have about the interior. Be it entry-level or top-ranking trim, there is no shortage of features. The drive is peppy and the chassis has been fine-tuned for excellent grip on the turns. That said, the Audi A5 is grinding against rivals such as the BMW 4 Series Convertible, the Porsche 718 Boxster, and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class in the luxury convertible or as European companies like to call it cabriolet segment.

Features

There are three trims given on the 2021 Audi A5 Cabriolet. The base trim is called Premium trim costs $50,400 and adds all the basic and fundamental features such as 18-inch wheels, three-zone automatic climate control, LED headlights and taillights, Power trunk lid release, LED interior lighting, manual tilt, and telescopic steering wheel, leather seats, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, heated front seats, and a 10.1-inch touch screen.

Move up and select the Premium Plus to trim which has all the features given on the base trim and it also includes upgraded headlights, wireless charging, adaptive cruise control, Top view camera system which is basically a Surround-view camera system that gives you a top-down view of the A5 and surrounding in for parking situations. The top of the range Prestige trim will add the Bang & Olufsen sound system, head-up display, heated rear seats, and automated parking system.

The Premium Plus trim has a Navigation Package ($1,500) which gives a 6-months trial of Audi connect PRIME and PLUS, and MMI Navigation Plus. The Warm Weather Package ($1,900) on the mid-range trim has ventilated front seats, neck-level heating system, front sport seats, 4-way power lumbar. The Premium Plus trim can also add the optional Bang & Olufsen sound system with 3D sound.

 Which Trim should you buy:

In our opinion, the mid-range Premium Plus trim is the best.t. It now comes with standard adaptive cruise control with active lane assist, a top-view camera system, and a hands-on detection steering wheel. Additionally, it has more safety features, better-upgraded headlights, and more optional packages.

Engine and Performance
7.0/10

For the 2021 model year, Audi has added a new 12-volt hybrid system that has a light electric-assist motor that takes the duty of performing mediocre tasks which generally get done by the engine. Because of this mild hybrid system, the total engine output has gone up from 248 hp to 261 hp but the 273 lb-ft of torque remains the same.

The engine is coupled with a 7-speed transmission and the power gets transferred to all the wheels as AWD is the only drivetrain given from the Audi on the A5 cabriolet. With this arrangement, the Audi A5 sprints from 0 to 60 mph in 5.6 seconds as per Audi’s evaluation. The top speed offered by the A5 is less than what is offered by the Porsche 718 Boxster and BMW 4 Series.

Porsche 718 Boxster is a clear winner in terms of acceleration and top track speed. With the help of its 2.0-liter turbocharged boxer-4/flat-4 engine, the 718 Boxster reaches 60 mph from a standstill in 4.9 seconds and has a top track speed of 170. Meanwhile, the BMW 4 Series 430i does 0-60 mph in 5.8 seconds and has a track speed that can vary from 130 to 155 mph depending upon the track and wheels used. Last but the least is the rival from the Mercedes-Benz which crosses 60 mph from the state of rest 0.6 seconds later than the Audi A5.

How well does the 2021 Audi A5 Cabriolet handle?:

The acceleration is smooth and the ride is composed. You don’t have to worry about turns as the Audi A5 handles very well on the corners. The steering wheel has the right weight to it and is very precise. Therefore, the car is easy to maneuver and you really feel like the only person in charge. The standard Quattro all-wheel-drive offers a great deal of stability while driving and the suspensions are not inclined towards either a firmer or softer side.

There are no major blind-spot in your sight which makes it easier to drive even when the hardtop is closed. The cabin is noisy as you get the soft top, not the hardtop, but hey you are choosing the main purpose of the cabriolet is to let you feel the might of nature under that big blue canvas. So enjoy your peaceful yet exciting ride as the air caresses your skin.

2021 Audi A5 Cabriolet Braking Performance:

The Audi A5 has the biggest sets of brake rotors in the competition. The front rotors are 13.3 inches big and the size of the rear brake rotors are 13.0 inches big. That said, the Audi A5 is simple to come to a smooth halt in normal driving or to stop swiftly in an emergency. It goes from 60 mph to 0 mph in 127 feet. That said, the Audi A5 is the second heaviest car in the competition.

The BMW 4 Series 430i comes to a halt from 60 mph over just 105 feet. But keep in mind, during this test, upgraded brakes from the optional package were equipped. Otherwise, we expect 4 Series to have a stopping distance in the range of 115 to 125 feet. That said, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class C 300 4MATIC and the Porsche 718 Boxster have the same size as the front and rear brake rotors.

Fuel Economy
5.0/10

Since there is only one engine and drivetrain available on the 2021 Audi, there is only one set of fuel economy figures. As per the EPA estimation, the fuel economy of the Audi A5 is 23 MPG in the city, 31 MPG on the highway, and 26 MPG combined. That said, the fuel tank capacity is 15.3 gallons. With these figures, you can get a highway range up to 474 miles, a city range up to 352, and a combined range of up to 398 miles.

The Audi A5 is the most fuel-efficient car in the city but this honor is also shared by the BMW 4 Series. Additionally, the BMW 4 Series 430i with the AWD consumes the least amount of fuel on the highway. Replace the AWD with the RWD and the fuel efficiency of the BMW 4 Series will rise by 2 MPG in the city, 1 MPG on the highway, and 1 MPG combined. Moreover, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class C 300 4MATIC

returns better fuel economy compared to the rival from the Porsche while the most fuel consumption is seen in the Porsche 718 Boxster and it also has the smallest fuel tank in the competition.

Interior
8.0/10

The quality of the materials used inside the Audi A5’s cabin is on par with the fellow rivals. You won’t be able to find hard plastic even if you tried. The whole cabin has leather and soft-touch material. That said, brown walnut wood inlays can be replaced with the gray oak natural wood inlays and seats have leather upholstery. Upgrade to the Premium Plus trim and there will be Faux leather on the center console and armrests. As far as comfort is concerned, the front row is pretty spacious but the same can’t be said about the second row. That being said, if it’s space you are worried about then A5 sibling A4, the four-door version might be the thing for you.

The front seats have a 10-way power adjustment and there is 4-way lumbar support to the driver seat which gets memory function standard on the Premium Plus trim but optional on the base trim. The front heated seats are standard but heated steering is optional on the Premium trim. Auto-dimming rearview mirror, manual tilt and telescopic steering column, three-zone automatic climate control with the digital rear display, LED ambient lighting, leather-wrapped steering wheel with paddle shifters, and 50/50 split-folding rear seats are some standard cabin features given on the 2021 Audi A5 Cabriolet.

That being said, the most generous front row is offered on the BMW Series but the airiest second row is given on the Audi A5. In terms of cargo capacity, the Porsche 718 Boxster has the lead while the least amount of cargo capacity is offered on the BMW 4 Series. Highlights of the interior features include:

Exterior
7.0/10

Just like any other Audi model, the 2021 Audi A5 Cabriolet has a gaze stealing the design. The black honeycomb grille with chrome surround and sharp LED headlights are giving an aggressive look at the front. On the backside, Dual exhaust tips are complimenting the A5’s athletic appeal. Move your attention to the side profile and you will be greeted with the elegant curves and mixtures of smooth plus sharp body lines which bestow the Audi A5 its compact look.

Additionally, LED taillights with dynamic turn signals are given on the back, Heat-insulating glass on the side and rear window, and side mirrors are heated and can be electrically operated. 18" 5-V-spoke Y-design alloy wheels with the help of R18 all-season tires allow the A5 to maintain its grip on the track. However, you can also choose the optional 19-inch 10-spoke V-spoke design wheels. On the higher trims, Matrix-design LED headlights are given. That said if you were thinking that Audi is gonna give you a hardtop for the A5 then you are wrong as a standard black folding soft-top is given over your head.

2021 Audi A5 Cabriolet vs 2021 BMW 4 Series Convertible

While there is no option for you to select the drivetrain in the Audi A5, you can do it in the BMW 4 Series. Horsepower generated by the BMW 4 Series 430i is lower but the torque produced is higher than the Audi A5. Additionally, with higher fuel efficiency, BMW has given an edge to the Series but its counterpart has an advantage if we consider the price tag since Audi A5 is about $5,000 cheaper.

2021 Audi A5 Cabriolet vs 2021 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Cabriolet

In the drag race, Audi A5 will win against the Mercedes-Benz C-Class C 300. Furthermore, Audi A5 consumes less fuel, has a more spacious cabin, possesses a bigger trunk and what its competitor from the Mercedes-Benz has is a bigger fuel tank. Plus, the Audi A5 will hurt your pockets less compared to the Mercedes-Benz C-Class C 300. However, you get drivetrain choices on the C-Class.

2021 Audi A5 Cabriolet vs 2021 Porsche 718 Boxster

The only rival against the Audi A5 which has the manual transmission that gives you old-school vibes, the Porsche 718 Boxster has a more enthusiastic acceleration compared to the Audi A5. It also has the boxer-4 engine instead of the traditional inline-4 setup under the hood. Moreover, the Porsche has given RWD as a standard drivetrain in the 718 Boxster. At last, if we compare the fuel economies, the Audi A5 is a better performer in comparison. But it is heavier and has slightly more space to store fuel than the 718 Boxster.

Final Verdict

What can we say? Every convertible against the new Audi A5 Cabriolet is a delight here but here are the facts to help you before you pull the final trigger. The Mercedes-Benz C-Class C 300 4MATIC is decent but lacks practicality, then you have the Porsche 718 Boxster which has better driving dynamics compared to the Audi A5. Finally, the only contender which has given a grand slam to the Audi A5 in the majority of aspects is the BMW 4 Series 430i. Therefore, if a couple of microseconds lag in acceleration ain’t ya big deal for you then better go with it the BMW 4 Series.
