Detailed Review

The biggest selling point of the Audi A5 Cabriolet is that it carries all the elements that make Audis special to a sexy, soft-top template. The Germans did have some success in doing just that since its inception in 2009 and in the facelifted A5s of 2011 and 2013. The changes this time aren't only skin-deep, they're so much more…

On US soil, we get a 2.0 liter turbocharged inline 4 cylinder coupled with a 7-speed dual clutch automatic transmission. The 2.0 TFSI makes 252 bhp at 5000 rpm and a net torque of 273 lbs.-ft at 1600 rpm and all that power is sent to the wheels via Audi's legendary Quattro AWD system.

Of course, the poster boys for ;cabriolet-perfection are the BMW 430i Cabriolet and the Mercedes C300 Convertible. And at a price that starts off at $49,600 for the ‘Premium' base model that goes upto  $52,700 for the top of the line ‘Prestige', it's cheaper than the competition. So, it's time to find out how it fares against the other Germans on the block.

2018 Audi A5 Convertible Features

7.9/10

The new Audi A5 Cabriolet comes in three trim options, namely Premium at $49,600, Premium Plus at $52,600 and the range-topping Prestige at a neat $57,200. The Prestige trim possesses state-of-the-art goodies like Head-up display, Virtual cockpit system, a new 8.3-inch infotainment system and a fancy smartphone app that controls vehicle functions. (Who wouldn’t want that?)

  10-speaker sound system
  Frontal collision warning and mitigation

The Audi Drive Select system, collision warning system, automated emergency braking and a total of 6 airbags are all standard on every trim you choose.

We Recommend

Given that the add-ons are very expensive and you can live without some amount of fancy tech stuff you get in the $57,200 Prestige trim, the Premium Plus would be the ideal one to choose.

Unless of course you want nothing but the best in your car and cannot wait to show off that you can control your car using your smartphone, go for the Prestige trim and you won’t be disappointed.

Engine and Transmission

The 2018 Audi A5 cabriolet steals the show when it comes to horsepower and torque figures offered by the 2.0 TFSI 4-cylinder. A total of 252 bhp is what you get around the 5000 rpm range and net torque of 273 lbs.-ft is achieved at 1600 rpm proving it’s faster and gives the much needed “oomph” that was lacking in the previous generations.

When it comes to gearshifts, a more than capable 7-speed S-tronic transmission ensures smooth and rapid gear shifts but true gearheads might be a little disappointed that the A5 doesn’t come with a stick-shift manual, unlike the 430i.

Models Audi A5 Cabriolet BMW 430i Cabriolet Mercedes-Benz C300 4Matic Cabriolet

Transmission 7-speed S Tronic dual-clutch automatic 8-speed Sport Automatic transmission with automatic Sport and Manual shift modes and steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters 9G-TRONIC 9-speed automatic
Horsepower 252hp @ 5,000 rpm 248hp @ 5,200 rpm 241hp @ 5,550 rpm
Torque 273 lb.-ft. @ 1,600 rpm 258 lb.-ft. @ 1,450 rpm 273 lb.-ft. @ 1,300 rpm

While the transmission options finish a close second to the Bavarians (BMW430i) who offer an 8-speed auto with the option of going manual, it certainly is better than the Merc which only offers a 9-speed automatic. Power output is where the A5 really has the bragging rights and it goes to prove that Audi has put in the effort to make this a driver’s car.

Acceleration

The effort that Audi has put in to make the A5 a better driver’s car than the last one is also apparent in the 0-60mph times. Our Cabriolet makes the run in just 6 seconds flat which is very impressive indeed as it is a tenth-of-a-second quicker than the BMW 430i and three-tenths of a second quicker than the C300.

Engine 2.0L 2.0L 2.0L
Emission (Tons/yr of CO2 Emissions @ 15K mi/year) 6.5 6.6 7.1

The competition couldn’t keep up with the A5 on the drag strip either as it finishes the quarter-mile in just 13.8 seconds compared to the Beemer’s 14.2 and the Merc’s sluggish 14.6 seconds. These figures are a direct result of the current gen A5 being 130 pounds lighter than the previous one which we can all appreciate.

Handling and steering

The A5 Cabriolet also gets the highly reputed AWD Quattro that does a splendid job of keeping the car stable without any wheelspin whatsoever. As brilliant as this system is, it cannot cover up the imbalance of weight you feel while going around a corner.

Body roll is somewhat of a problem. All models suffer from a little wobble when going over potholes. At the end of the day, it lacks the excitement and sharpness of a 430i but is light-years ahead of the old A5 models.

Braking

0-60 mph timings make no sense if 60-0 mph figures aren’t impressive. The A5 Cabriolet comes with brilliant brakes in the front and back at 13.3 and 13.0 inches respectively. It also gives the competition a run for their money too.

2018 Audi A5 Convertible Fuel Economy

7.9/10

The last thing you might possibly want to know about a European drop-top is the miles to the gallon it gives but we assure you, you’re in for a surprise there too.

The 2.0 TFSI is more economical than the older A5s thanks to a better 7-speed automatic transmission that just keeps getting better generation after generation. In the city, it gives 24 MPG and 34 MPG on the highway resulting in a combined figure of 29 MPG which beats the competition again as the numbers show below:

Seating and comfort

Also, there is a great amount of legroom and headroom for passengers in the back which is not a common thing in soft-top cruisers like this one and is very appreciable. This also lets two moderately-sized adults sit in the back without any issues.

The seats are electronically adjustable and in Premium plus, the A5 Cabriolet will remember your seating preferences making it very useful if the car is being used by more than one person.

Infotainment

When it comes to the infotainment options, Audi’s MMI system can be a 7-inch or an 8-inch screen depending on whether you choose the Premium or Prestige trim options. The MMI system is controlled by a rotary wheel below the center console which is a joy to use. If you don’t go for the Prestige trim and still want the virtual cockpit, be ready to pay $300 dollars upfront. The aesthetic flat-bottom steering wheel is dressed up in high-quality leather and feels wonderful to touch.

Cargo Capacity

The new model of the A5 cabriolet fares well in the cargo space department as well but isn’t as impressive as the C300 which happens to be the leader for cargo space in the segment. Also, note that the boot space reduces significantly with the top down.

2018 Audi A5 Convertible Exterior

"Restrained as it may be, the A5 is elegant, with one of its biggest splashes being up front with a large trapezoidal grille. Unlike a BMW 4 Series (and like the new Mercedes C-Class convertible), the A5 convertible has a fabric roof instead of a folding hardtop."- Kelley Blue Book

Dimensions and weight

Audi has paid a great amount of attention to reducing the weight of the A5 Cabriolet by using high-grade aluminum construction for the chassis and as a result, it is 130 pounds lighter than the older car at 3,990 pounds. The cabriolet is also lighter than the BMW 430i weighing 4,160 pounds but is slightly heavier than The Mercedes Benz C300 weighing 3,957 pounds.

The ground clearance of 4.7 inches could’ve been better as both the Beemer and the Merc stand higher off the ground at 5.1 inches which guarantees better comfort on undulating surfaces.

  • LED daytime running lights on ‘Premium Plus’
  • Xenon lights on ‘Premium’
  • Hexagonal Chrome grill

2018 Audi A5 Convertible Safety

8.6/10

Safety Features

The Germans have always paid attention to safety by incorporating the most advanced tech into their cars to protect the folks sitting inside the car. The Audi A5 Cabriolet is no different here as there are brilliant features installed to ensure safety at any speed such as:

2018 Audi A5 Convertible Competition

BMW 430i Convertible Vs Audi A5 convertible

For a very long time, the 3 series convertible and its ‘M’-badged siblings were the crème-de-la-crème of topless sports cars. The new 430i convertible is cut from the same cloth as it binds refinement with serious handling and speed. The Bavarian comes with a brilliant 2.0 liter TwinPower Turbo inline 4-cylinder which makes 248bhp and 273 lbs.-ft of torque.

Sure it doesn’t have as much ponies or net torque as the 2018 A5 Cabriolet but the handling is where it makes up for its flaws. It is sublime on corners and can give a sense of invincibility to the driver at high speeds both of which are absent in the Audi.   The steering feedback and handling are two serious areas where the Audi could learn something from the Beemer.

Mercedes-Benz C300 4-Matic convertible Vs Audi A5 convertible

Then there’s the other German… the C300 convertible from Merc. It’s a car that shows all the characteristics of a proper weekend cruiser and is stable, safe and is reasonably fun to drive. The A5 beats the C300 in almost every aspect except the boot space and some might say the Benz is better to look at too. The C300 is significantly low on horsepower at 241 bhp and identical in terms of torque at 273 lb.-ft from a 2.0 liter, 4-cylinder turbo.

2018 Audi A5 Convertible Final Verdict

It is certain that Audi has learned from their mistakes in the past and has given us a brilliant new Cabriolet version of their famous A5. It is just what a soft-top cruiser should feel like. Mind you, it is certainly no track-attack sports car but it does feel adequate for a fun weekend drive. If you’d like something a little more extreme, go for the BMW 4-series. If you want to cruise around peacefully without having a bad hair day, go for the 2018 Audi A5 Cabriolet.
