The new Audi A5 Sportback has become even more attractive than before with the changes in the exterior styling over the previous year’s model. The Sportback is Audi’s name for a four-door hatchback that has always been famous for its classy look in the segment. The Audi A5 Sportback contradicts the fact that hatchbacks can not be practical as Audi has managed pretty impressive space and luxury inside the cabin with the hatchback body design. You can also have the Audi A5 in the coupe or convertible body styles which will be reviewed separately.

We recommend

We recommend going for the Premium-Plus trim as it offers the best value for your money. It gets all the creature comforts and other required features as standard. You can take the optional ventilated front seats if you belong to an area where summers can be disturbing. The heated steering wheel also remains an optional feature which is quite expected as standard at this price point. You can go for this one if you need it as it might be very useful during the winter.

2020 Audi A5 Sportback Engine and Performance

8.7/10

The 2020 Audi A5 Sportback gets a single-engine option to power all the trim levels of the car. It is powered by a 2-liter turbocharged Inline-4 engine which is not bad at all. In fact, it offers some pretty decent numbers and the real-life performance is also quite good. The engine makes a maximum power of 248 horsepower while the peak torque output is 273 pound-feet. The engine comes mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The car also gets Audi’s Quattro all-wheel-drive as standard across the trims.

The performance of the Audi A5 Sportback is impressive for its segment. It is for sure not the best car to drive at the price point and you can not term it as a fun-to-drive car. But the performance is rather strong and offers a good level of excitement while driving the A5 Sportback. There is no turbo lag at all and the DCT transmission works really well to keep the car in the right gear at all times. The car surges forward the moment you press the brake pedals. It takes only 5.7 seconds to reach from 0 to 60 mph while the quarter-mile run takes 14.8 seconds. The acceleration figures are at par with the best-performing cars in the segment.

The BMW 4 Series is the fastest car in the competition with a similarly powerful engine. The Audi A5 Sportback comes after the Bimmer in the 0 to 60 mph sprint and the Audi is the slowest car to complete the quarter-mile run. The Cadillac ATS Sedan takes the highest time to complete the 0 to 60 mph sprint. The Acura TLX 2.4L has the highest top speed as it can go up to 164 miles an hour.

How well does the 2020 Audi A5 Sportback handle?

The Audi A5 Sportback is surprisingly good in the handling department and you can have some decent fun from behind the wheel. Do not get confused as it is not a proper driver’s delight as it does not stiffen up like the Bimmer and you do not get the best driver engagement in its class but it is still pretty impressive for an Audi hatchback. The steering wheel is direct and gives good confidence while driving. It offers good feedback and changing lanes feels easy.

The suspension is not tuned to give the best driving experience but you have the option to get the sportier suspension with the Handling package. The standard suspension manages to offer a good balance between ride and handling. High-speed stability is good and it never tosses you around in the cabin on the highway. The ride at lower speed is also good and it soaks all the road undulations pretty well. The A5 Sportback can keep you and your family members comfortable and happy at the same time.

How good is the braking performance of the 2020 Audi A5 Sportback?

The braking performance of the Audi A5 Sportback comes out as a disappointment for the car. The braking feel and distance take away from the overall driving feel. It gets 13.3 inches brake rotors at the front wheels while 13 inches brake rotors at the rear wheels. The size of the brake rotors is bigger than some of its rivals but the braking performance is not good enough. It takes 112 feet to come to a complete stop from 60 mph. The feedback from the peddle is a major disappointment here as the brakes miss the required bite.

The Audi A5 performs better than the Acura TLX 2.4L in terms of braking distance. The TLX 2.4L takes 118 feet of distance to come to a halt from 60 miles per hour which are 6 feet more than the A5. However, the braking distance for the other two rivals is not here with us for now. Audi A5 Sportback needs to improve on the overall bite and feedback from the brakes.

2020 Audi A5 Sportback Fuel Economy

The fuel economy completely depends on the driving style when it comes to cars like the Audi A5 Sportback that packs such great performance. The 2020 Audi A5 Sportback performs really well in the fuel economy department for its class. It can return you 24 mpg in the city. 32 mpg on the highway, and 27 mpg of combined fuel economy. This kind of efficiency can be considered among the top for the class. The only disappointment is the size of the fuel tank which is not that big but is not too small either. The A5 Sportback gets a 15.3-gallon fuel tank and can go up to 490 miles on the highway.

The BMW 4 Series goes slightly ahead of the competition in terms of highway fuel efficiency. The Acura TLX 2.4L comes at the second position but leads the table in terms of the maximum highway range as it gets the biggest fuel tank in the competition that can hold 17.2 gallons of fuel. The Audi A5 Sportback gets the smallest fuel tank which leads to a lower highway range compared to the Bimmer and Acura TLX.

2020 Audi A5 Sportback Interior

8.7/10

The 2020 Audi A5 Sportback is a classy car from the inside and it offers a good sense of luxury inside its cabin. There is a combination of black, beige, and some wooden trims on the dashboard as well as the doors. You can also find some silver trims inside the cabins that also include some of the buttons. The tan wood trim might not appeal to many buyers and a darker wood insert would be a great addition to the cabin. The seats are supportive and comfortable. They offer multiple adjustment options and you also get memory functionality for two drivers.

The steering wheel feels nice to hold with the right thickness and is wrapped in leather. The only quirk there is the paddle shifters that are made of plastic which should be of metal at this price point. All the controls for the drivers and the cabin control are easy to use and reach. The rear seats are surprisingly spacious and comfortable. The sloping roofline does not take away much in terms of the headroom. Two passengers can comfortably sit in the rear seats for long hours. However, the third passenger will feel cramped in the rear seats.

The Audi A5 Sportback offers one of the most spacious cabins in the competition. The space is managed pretty well to offer good comfort to the front and the rear passengers. It offers the best legroom in the segment for the rear passengers. The cargo area is also the best in the class. The BMW 4 Series on the other hand falls behind all its rivals in both these regards. Standout interior features are:

  • 8-way power front seats
  • Memory seats for two drivers
  • 40-20-40 folding rear seats
  • Manual tilt/telescoping steering wheel
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control
  • Cruise control

What is there to keep you entertained in the 2020 Audi A5 Sportback?

The 2020 Audi A5 Sportback gets an all-new 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment display placed on the dashboard of the car. There is also an additional screen for the instrument cluster that acts as Audi’s virtual cockpit. When you combine both screens, there is pretty much nothing that Audi has missed in terms of technology. The graphics are sharp and clear.

The user interface of the infotainment system is easy to use and all the features are easy to navigate. The screen offers a lot of information for the driver and also has a high-quality camera to show you what’s going on in the back when you are trying to park your car. The infotainment supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It gets a standard 10-speaker audio system. However, you also get an optional 19-speaker Bang & Olufsen Sound System. Standout infotainment features include:

  • A 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment display
  • Bluetooth audio streaming
  • Audi smartphone interface
  • HD radio
  • Android Auto and Apple CarPlay
  • 10-speaker audio system

2020 Audi A5 Sportback Exterior

The 2020 Audi A5 Sportback got some small changes to the exterior styling with the 2020 model year without playing around with the core design language of the car. The Audi A5 Sportback has always been a stellar-looking car and it continues even with the new model year update. The LED headlights on the front look attractive and match well with Audi’s design language. The big black front grille is another signature Audi’s styling that looks great on the Audi A5 Sportback.

The fake vents below the headlights add to the sportiness of the car. When you move off to the hood of the car, it gets some sharp lines flowing all the way from the front to the windshield of the car. The sharp lines extend from the front to the rear of the car on the sides to make it even more aggressive. The machine-aluminum alloy wheels look good on the sides. The rear gets all-new taillights with flowing effects.

The Acura TLX also takes the lead in terms of the overall width but Audi A5 Sportback is not far behind in the area as well. Standout exterior features are:

  • 18-inch wheels
  • LED headlights with DRLs

2020 Audi A5 Sportback Competition

Audi A5 Sportback vs. Acura TLX

When it comes to performance, both these cars come neck to neck. However, Audi A5 Sportback is still faster than the Acura TLX in terms of outright acceleration with quite a margin. The nimble handling and luxurious cabin of the Audi A5 Sportback along with the legendary design language of the Sportback body design makes it a better choice between the two for the money.

Audi A5 Sportback vs. BMW 4-Series

The BMW 4-Series is the closest rival to the Audi A5 Sportback in almost every regard. The exterior styling is attractive for both cars and it depends on your personal preference which one you like better. The luxury inside the cabin is also up there among the best of both cars. However, the Audi A5 Sportback gets a slight advantage in the cabin design and materials over the Bimmer. BMW 4-Series on the other hand offers a more agile and engaging drive.

Audi A5 Sportback vs. Cadillac ATS Sedan

The Cadillac ATS sedan is not a direct rival of the Audi A5 Sportback as there are many differences between these cars. But they come at a similar price point and with some similarities. The Cadillac ATS sedan is the slowest car in the competition here. However, it comes with great driver engagement. But when it comes to choosing a better overall package, the Audi A5 Sportback is a clear winner between the two.

2020 Audi A5 Sportback Final Verdict

The new Audi A5 Sportback is a great pick for someone looking for a practical luxury hatchback in the segment. The exterior styling of the Audi A5 Sportback will impress many buyers and they will get the right attention out on the road. With the 2020 update, the exterior design has become even better than before. The performance is at par with the rivals and the luxurious cabin is a great addition too. The Audi A5 Sportback can be a sensible pick in its segment.
