We Recommend

The A8 is a luxury car and is something you would generally buy if comfort and luxury are on top of priority list. So, L 3.0 TFSI variant is just the right variant since it gets all the amenities and luxury features that the pricier L 4.0 TFSI Sport variant gets. Moreover, paying $9000 more for a slightly more powerful engine doesn't really make sense and so the L 3.0 TFSI variant is just the one you should buy.

2017 Audi A8 L Engine

8.5/10

"At launch, the A8 will be available with one engine, a single-turbo 3.0-liter V-6 good for 335 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque."-CarandDriver

Engine and Transmission

The Audi A8 L gets a turbocharged fuel stratified injection (TFSI), 3 litre, a V6 power plant that churns out 333 HP @ 5500 rpm and delivers 325 lb-ft of torque at 2900 rpm. The engine comes mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. The power is distributed to all wheels via Audi's advanced Quattro all-wheel drive technology.

The Audi isn't the most powerful car of the lot. Only the German rival of the A8, the BMW 740i Sedan makes less power than it at 320 HP. The Jaguar XJ on the other hand pumps out 340 HP and the Cadillac CT6 Sedan delivers 2 more horses than the Audi A8.

If you ever happen to take this car to a drag strip, the Audi A8 L will hit the quarter mile mark in 13.8 seconds. You certainly cannot expect better acceleration timings than these for a limousine.

The Audi loses to the BMW 740i and Jaguar XJ just by 0.1 seconds in terms of 0-60 acceleration. The BMW 740i beats the Audi A8 by 0.4 seconds when it comes to quarter mile acceleration. Acceleration timings aren't usually the deciding factors while buying a luxury car and also not something you turn a blind eye to. The Audi A8 does perform really well and achieves respectable acceleration timings.

Ride and Handling

The Audi A8 L has some brisk driving experience on offer. Most owners won't be driving the car yet Audi has gone a step forward to ensure that chauffeurs won't have a hard maneuvering the limousine around. The steering response is quick and the steering wheel offers great feedback. Driving it around crowded lanes is going be a little bit difficult given the fact that this is a long car but the exquisite handling makes it easy driving it in the city.

Braking capabilities of a car as important as the capabilities of the engine. Keeping this in mind, Audi has equipped the A8 with some good braking abilities. Up front, the A8 gets large 15 inches diameter discs and at the rear, it gets 14 inches diameter discs. Slam on the brakes and the Audi comes to a standstill from 60 MPH at a distance of 118 feet which is pretty good for a car that weighs almost 4500 lbs.

The BMW 740i Sedan has the largest brakes of the lot. Up front, it gets 17.7 inches diameter discs while at the rear it gets 14.5 inches diameter discs. The BMW also has the shortest stopping distance at 112 feet. The Cadillac beats the Audi by a very short margin and comes to halt at a distance of 117 feet. The Cadillac achieves this due to its lower curb weight in spite of getting the smaller set of brakes.

2017 Audi A8 L Competition

BMW 740i Sedan vs Audi A8 L

The BMW 740i is the German rival of the Audi A8. The BMW is $1,000 cheaper than the Audi but BMW also makes 13 horses less than the Audi. But the BMW delivers slightly better acceleration and braking performances than the Audi. Also, the BMW offers marginally better fuel economy and also gets the larger trunk. In terms of interior comfort and amenities, the BMW is as good as the Audi. Closely comparing both cars, the BMW seems to be the better car of the two and so if you have to choose between the two, we would suggest you go for the BMW.

Jaguar XJ vs Audi A8 L

The Jaguar XJ is the British rival of the Audi A8. The Jag makes 7 more horses than the Audi and also is priced $8,000 lower than the Audi. In spite of making more power, the Jag fails to beat the Audi when it comes to acceleration timings. The Audi has the better fuel economy and braking stats and also offers more room on the inside. The Jaguar XJ only has the better cargo volume at 15.2 cubic feet which is only 1 cubic foot more than the Audi. It is pretty much a 50-50 story in this case and if you desperately want to save your $8000, then you should go for the Jag. Otherwise, shell the extra 8000 bucks out and go get the Audi A8.

Cadillac CT6 Sedan vs Audi A8 L

The Cadillac CT6 is the American counterpart of the Audi A8. The Cadillac CT6 uses a larger engine and makes 2 more horses than the Audi. But the plus point of the Cadillac is that it is priced $17,290 less than the Audi. The Audi, on the other hand, rips apart the Cadillac with its performance stats and luxurious amenities. Moreover, the Audi logo has the greater snob value than the Cadillac logo. If you need to save those $17,000, then the Cadillac CT6 is the car for you. Otherwise, it is always advisable to buy the Audi A8.

2017 Audi A8 L Final Verdict

The Audi A8 is the king of luxury cars. The car has a beautiful design language and has some exquisitely designed interiors. Audi has given attention to the smallest of the details and has truly justified every penny that you will be paying them.

Despite all the goodies that the Audi offers, the Mercedes Benz S Class and the BMW 7 Series still remain the most popular limousines. People looking for sportier options generally opt for the Porsche Panamera while the ones in the hunt for a car with distinctive design opt for the Jaguar XJ. The Audi A8, on the other hand, strikes the right balance between luxury, panache, distinctive design and sportiness. All these characteristics of the Audi A8 make it pretty much an attractive package and justify its price tag of $82500.
