Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

For the upcoming 2023 iteration, the Audi E-Tron will continue without any changes. With a striking design and ample features, there are no complaints that buyers might have about it. While the SUV is yet to reach the dealerships, it has been confirmed that the vehicle will be available in three trims as before, with the price for the base variant starting at $66,8800. It carries forward as a part of the compact luxury SUV class, where it receives competition from the likes of the Jaguar I-Pace, the Tesla Model Y, and the Ford Mustang Mach-E.

Features

The 2023 Audi E-Tron will continue with a similar set of trims as the outgoing iteration. This structure starts with the base Premium trim at $66,800 and extends to $83,400 for the top-tier Chronos Edition. All trims will sport the standard twin-motor setup with the Quattro drivetrain and can be distinguished from one another by the features and optional packages they provide. As standard, the SUV currently is made available with leather upholstery, LED headlights, and Audi’s virtual cockpit system.

With the 2023 E-Tron, Audi has confirmed several trim-specific optional packages as well. While options like rear passenger airbags and towing packages are self-explanatory, the more comprehensive package options and their inclusions are listed below:

  1. Convenience Package @ $3,500 (Available with the Premium trim)
  • Black roof rails
  • Top-view camera system with a 360-degree view
  • Gloss-black exterior elements
  • Adaptive Cruise Assist
  1. Black Optic Package @ $2,400 (Available with the Premium Plus trim)
  • 21-inch alloy wheels
  • Dynamic Orange Brake Calipers
  • High-gloss black exterior elements

We Recommend

Keeping in mind the pricing of the vehicle, the 2023 Audi E-Tron Premium with the Convenience Package is our recommendation. Not only does it offer a comprehensive set of features, but the optional package adds a potent list of specifications to the vehicle without increasing the price considerably.

Release Date

The 2023 Audi E-Tron has been unveiled by the brand and its pricing and feature list are available for buyers to view on the website. However, the vehicle is not available at the dealerships and may be released by the end of the third or the start of the fourth quarter.

Engine and Performance
8.5/10

The 2023 Audi E-Tron comes with a similar mechanical setup as the outgoing model. This engine unit under the hood consists of twin-electric motors that are mated to a 95-kWh lithium-ion battery. In its standard specification, the vehicle produces 355 horsepower and 414 lb.-ft of torque, which is decent as per class standards. However, with the boost engaged, these outputs increase considerably to 402 horsepower and 490 lb.-ft of torque. The vehicle comes mated to a 1-speed direct drive transmission unit, which along with the dual motors transfers power to all the wheels through Audi’s revered Quattro system.

While the setup is similar to most vehicles in its class, the performance differs considerably. With its standard outputs, the Audi E-Tron manages a run time of 6 seconds to the 60mph mark. This makes the German option one of the slowest vehicles in its class. However, with the boost engaged, this time drops by half a second, which still fails to place the SUV in direct contention with its rivals. While the quarter-mile timings have not yet been ascertained, the top speed of 124 MPH is also lower than every other competitor.

When pitted against its rivals, the 2022 Jaguar I-Pace emerges as the best option in its class. Not only does it provide the highest outputs at 394hp and 512 lb.-ft of torque, but it is also the quickest SUV at 4.5 seconds. The other vehicles in comparison, the Tesla Model Y and the Ford Mustang Mach-E are also considerably quicker and manage to complete the 60mph run in 4.8 seconds. They also manage to secure the best top speeds at 135 and 130 MPH, respectively.

2023 Audi E-Tron Ride and Handling

Through its setup, the 2023 Audi E-Tron clarifies its intention as a cogent daily driver. Beginning with its handling, the SUV remains sharp and precise and restricts body roll to a minimum even when cornering. The vehicle feels easy to drive in the city and thanks to its standard all-wheel-drive setup, even rough and rocky terrains are easy to tread on. Additionally, the comfort adaptive suspension that is available from the base variant itself helps optimize performance by adapting ride height and changing suspension settings to deliver the best quality.

2023 Audi E-Tron Braking Performance

The 2023 Audi E-Tron has a sharp bite to its braking system. While no information regarding the brake rotors and their sizes are not available, the availability of 4-wheel ABS and disc brakes on all wheels add to the capabilities. Though the vehicle has a higher curb weight than most of its competitors, we feel that Audi’s obsession to streamline its performance will ensure that braking performance does not remain lackluster.

In comparison, the halting distance for none of the vehicles have yet been ascertained. However, Jaguar and Tesla do provide information about brake sizes and rotors. While the former is the heaviest car on offer, the Model Y sports the largest set of rotors, both at the front and rear. These are sized at 14 and 13.2 inches, respectively, which can improve the overall performance.

Fuel Economy
7.5/10

Considering that the 2023 Audi E-Tron SUV sports electric powertrains, frugality is expected to be top-notch. In isolation, the German SUV’s mileage of 78 eMPG in the city and 77 eMPG on the highway feel cogent. However, when compared to the rivals, its efficiency feels substandard. Not only does it manage to average the lowest combined mileage, but even its range of 226 miles is the shortest in the class that it falls. Its charging time is also relatively higher, with the vehicle taking 10 hours to be charged to its full potential from an AC port.

At 330 miles of range and combined mileage of 122 eMPG, the Tesla Model Y ranks at the top of its class. It stays at the helm of affairs and is closely followed by the Ford Mustang Mach-E, which manages to secure an overall range of 314 miles. Only the Jaguar I-Pace falls below Audi’s proposition and currently, it leads only in terms of highway mileage.

Interior
8.5/10

The 2023 E-Tron upholds the leisure and comfort levels you would generally relate to an offering from Audi. Right from its wide-opening doors, the SUV ensures that there is no inconvenience that the buyers would have to face. The seats on both rows offer ample cushioning and comfort and the under-thigh, knee, and lumbar support remain unwavering. There is impressive head and legroom on offer and with the kind of space it bestows, the E-Tron ensures that occupants of all sizes are not overwhelmed on longer journeys. It can accommodate five passengers easily, however, the brand’s claim the vehicle of being a family hauler is quickly nullified by its cargo capacity of 28.5 cubic feet, which is one of the lowest in its segment.

Nonetheless, the 2023 Audi E-Tron adds luxury to the compact luxury class. From the Premier trim itself, the SUV comes equipped with leather upholstery, four-zone climate control, and heated front seats. Though the setup does feel gimmicky, the SUV’s ability to add an ambient lighting setup and ventilation with the Chronos Edition easily justifies the price tag that it carries. Even the material quality is top-notch and everywhere from the doors to the dash, the upholstery looks and feels good. The wooden inlays on the door handle also add to the overall aesthetic appeal and while they are not available as standard, buyers can equip them as optional without paying any additional amount.

In terms of space, all three SUVs have a seating capacity of five passengers. However, when the head, shoulder, and legroom are compared, only the 2022 Tesla Model Y manages to gain ascendancy. It also feels like the most cleverly designed vehicle as it vaunts the highest cargo capacity as well, which is measured at 76.2 cubic feet. This is followed by the Ford Mustang Mach-E, while the Jaguar I-Pace continues to lurk at the bottom of the table with the standard and maximum cargo capacity and substandard legroom in the second row of 35 inches.

How intuitive is the 2023 Audi E-Tron’s infotainment system?

The 2023 Audi E-Tron carries forward with a similar setup from last year. This means that the flamboyant touchscreen unit maintains relevance, which can irk the buyers with its lack of physical buttons. Nonetheless, the intuitiveness and user-friendly nature of Audi’s MMI system remain intact. It is quick to respond and does not have a steep learning curve to it. The vehicle sports wireless CarPlay and wired Android Auto as standard, which when coupled with other features like AM/FM stereo, MP3 Player, and satellite radio allow the SUV to be a potent offering. The sound duties are handled by Audi’s own system in the base option, while the mid-level and top-tier Chronos option adds a Bang and Olufsen system to the mix. Even Audi’s virtual cockpit remains prevalent and adds both practicality and aesthetic appeal to the setup.

Some of the salient infotainment features include:

  • Wireless Apple CarPlay
  • Wired Android Auto
  • Audi Virtual Cockpit
  • 13-speaker Bang and Olufsen 3D sound system
  • MMI Navigation Plus
  • Satellite Radio
Exterior
8.5/10

The Audi E-Tron SUV has always had a close relation to its Q5 counterpart. Yet in terms of aesthetic appeal, both vehicles differ largely. While the Q5 looks sophisticated and rather subtle, the E-Tron has an aggressive look to it despite its refined powertrain. All aspects of design, from its typical EV grille to the Matrix headlights add flavor to the vehicle. Even the 20 and 21-inch wheels available with the SUV give it a proportionate look. The character lines are exquisitely dealt with and though the taillights might seem idiosyncratic at first glance, buyers will get used to the conjoined units without an iota of doubt.

The 2023 Audi E-Tron is available in 9 exterior colors. While each color option looks striking, the availability of a Black Optic Package allows the SUV to have a sportier look. It adds distinct orange brake calipers and black roof rails, which impressively extend its aesthetic appeal. As for dimensions, Audi’s SUVis the largest in its class. It sports an overall length of 193 inches and has a height and width of 65.5 and 76.2 inches, respectively. The ground clearance stands at 6.9 inches and despite its overall dimensions, the vehicle’s wheelbase is shorter than most competitors at 115.3 inches.

Without a doubt, the Jaguar I-Pace has the smallest footprint in its class. Yet it sports the longest wheelbase at 117.7 inches and takes a marginal lead over the Ford SUV by 0.2 inches. On the other hand, the Tesla Model Y has the shortest wheelbase and a curb weight of 4,416 lbs. Not only is it the lightest SUV, but it is almost 1,400 lbs lighter than its German counterpart. When the exterior design is concerned, no SUV can match Audi’s appeal. However, the Mach-E does look like a true Mustang with its sharp lights and character lines.

Some of the salient exterior features of the 2023 Audi E-Tron include:

  • 20-inch bi-color alloy wheels
  • Matrix LED headlights
  • Black Optic Exterior Package
  • Roof rails

  • Panoramic Sunroof
Safety
9.0/10

Considering that the 2023 Audi E-Tron is yet to be launched, it has not been subjected to crash tests. However, considering the safety ratings of the previous iteration and also the feature list of the SUV, there is not much that buyers would have to worry about. The Audi E-Tron in the current model year comes equipped with front and rear parking sensors, a blind-spot monitoring system, and a lane departure warning system. It also adds a turning assist, adaptive cruise assist, and rear automatic braking as optional inclusions through packages and, without a doubt, qualifies as a safe proposition.

Some other safety features available with the 2023 Audi E-Tron include:

  • Front and rear parking sensors
  • Rear Cross-traffic Alert
  • Forward Collision Warning System
  • Traffic Sign recognition
  • Adaptive Cruise Control
  • Electronic Stability Control and Traction Control
Competition
8.5/10

2023 Audi E-Tron vs 2022 Jaguar I-Pace

The Audi E-Tron and Jaguar I-Pace pioneered the trends of electric SUVs for their respective brands. Both SUVs are equally matched and differ only diminutively in performance. While the British vehicle has better engine outputs and managed quicker acceleration, Audi gained ascendancy with its fuel efficiency. The German proposition also cements its place with its impressive passenger space, a large trunk, and also its top-notch safety features. The interior setup also feels more refined and at a price that is lower than the 2022 I-Pace, the E-Tron can easily be regarded as the more sensible option.

2023 Audi E-Tron vs 2022 Tesla Model Y

Tesla’s impressive charging station coverage and longer experience with electric cars allow it to have an upper hand in the circuit. When pitted against the 2023 E-Tron, the 2022 Model Yis quicker, frugal, and provides better space. It adds to its practicality with impressive cargo space and though it looks basic compared to its flamboyant rivals, the SUV gains ascendancy in all aspects. However, Tesla’s ownership and after-sales experienceare not the most refined. So, while we do recommend the SUV, we would suggest buyers be particular with their vehicle’s maintenance to avoid the escalation of any issue.

2023 Audi E-Tron vs 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E

With its affiliation to Mustang, the Mach-E SUV instantaneously became a talked about SUV. Thankfully, the vehicle lived up to its hype. When compared to the Audi E-Tron, the 2022 Mustang Mach-E is quicker, more efficient, and offers an impressive battery pack. It is ergonomically designed and offers better passenger and cargo space to the owners. It also looks the part when compared to the German contender and for a vehicle that is priced at almost a $10,000 price difference, the Ford option feels affordable and delivers the best value for its class.

Final Verdict

The 2023 Audi E-Tron witnesses no changes in the current iteration. So, it remains a fairly decent SUV in the electric vehicle class. While in isolation its performance feels rewarding, all the competitors of the German vehicle prove to be better options. Not only do they gain ascendancy when acceleration and efficiency are concerned, but they also offer better space and increase their practicality with their sensible setup. As a result, without any changes, the E-Tron does not feel like an improvement. However, credit where it is due, the vehicle is a breeze to drive and resounds with luxury throughout. It is also easy to own and does not have an astronomically high number of complaints. So, if you are keen on owning Audi’s electric SUV, it will not disappoint. However, we do recommend buyers opt for the 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E instead.
