As one of the best-selling cars from Audi, the 2023 Audi Q5 has to meet a lot of expectations regarding luxury and performance. This year also sees some styling updates, the addition of new colors, as well as updates to some trim-level packages. It is still part of the second generation that was introduced back in 2018 and we have to wait out to get an all-electric variant. Its strengths are known to all - good powertrains, excellent quality interiors, as well a great allocation of space.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

The midsize SUV segment has some intense competition and all the cars offer comfortable seating for five occupants. The Audi comes with an all-wheel-drive powertrain as standard and hence has good abilities on and off the road. It still retains the Audi Q5 Sportback as well as the Q5 plug-in hybrid. Prices start at an MSRP of $45,500 and it competes against the Mercedes Benz GLC Class, the Porsche Macan, and the BMW X3. Read on to find an in-depth 2023 Audi Q5 review.

Features

So far, Audi has not revealed the exact feature breakdown that we should expect for the 2023 model cars. The trim lineup is however retained and we find three trims as usual. The base trim is Premium, followed by the Premium Plus, and Prestige. There are more standard safety features coming down to the base trim including adaptive cruise control and lane departure warning. The Premium Plus trim now gets Bang and Olufsen surround sound system and other niceties as well.

 We Recommend

When factoring in the equipment level and the price of the car, we feel that the premium plus trim level makes a lot of sense. It gives you features like a power-adjustable steering column, Audi virtual cockpit digital gauge display, the full safety suite, and so on. Among the powertrains, we feel the 45 series powertrains make a lot of sense, with its 261 hp output, more of which will be explained soon in this article.

Release Date

The 2023 Audi Q5 release date has not yet been finalized by the brand. However, since it does not come with a lot of updates and following the model year rollout sequences that we observe from Audi, we have to go out on a limb and say that it will come to dealerships by the last quarter of 2022. This will mean that deliveries will begin soon after as the automotive industry is reviving after supply chain issues.

Engine and Performance

Audi give you a lot of options in terms of the powertrain with this car. What you get a standard is a 2L turbocharged Inline 4 engine, along with a seven-speed automatic transmission as well as Quattro all-wheel-drive system. In its standard guise, it puts out 261 horsepower. Power output further increases if you opt for the plug-in hybrid variant, but that will be reviewed in a separate article. Even in the base state of tune, this car is capable of delivering a 0 to 60 mph time of just 6.1 seconds and is able to climb up to a top speed of 142 mph if need be.

2023 Audi Q5 SUV Engine Bay

Audi also provides a performance-oriented version of this car called the SQ5 which comes with a 3 L V6 turbocharged engine. The powertrains are denoted by numbers 45, and 55 denoting each state of tune. The 45 Series represents the 261 hp output engines that only come with mild-hybrid assistance and the 55 series denotes the plug-in hybrid with 362 hp. The seven-speed automatic transmission feels great and the Quattro system is amazing in terms of the traction output it provides. No matter how bad the road condition is, your 0 to 60 mph times will remain pretty much the same.

We can see that this category has good competition in terms of the powertrains and all competitors come with 2L turbocharged inline 4 engines. The highest power output is delivered by the Audi itself but with all competitors getting all-wheel-drive, the Mercedes Benz GLC Class is the fastest one to hit 60 mph. Although the Porsche Macan is slightly slower in a straight line, it manages to redeem itself with its driving dynamics.

2023 Audi Q5 Ride and Handling

The Audi Q5 has good ride quality for the most part but it feels a little busy. Even with the adaptive suspension, the car since quite a few vibrations inside, and some of its competitors do a much better job in terms of cabin insulation. The ride is not stiff by any measure but does not feel like it is plush either. Being one of the biggest plus points of a brand like Audi, we sure feel that it could have been better.

In terms of the handling, the car is quite capable but the competitors like the BMW X3 and the Porsche Macan deliver a much more focused experience, the Audi doesn’t measure up well in that aspect either. It is even more surprising to note that the Porsche is based on the very same platform but has much better capabilities owing to its recalibration of the all-wheel-drive system as well as its suspension tuning.

2023 Audi Q5 Braking Performance

The braking performance of the Audi Q5 is not a strong point either. In terms of size, they are quite adequate with a rotor measuring 13.3 inches upfront as well as 13.0 inches at the rear. The ABS system was slightly intrusive and also quite noisy if we’re being honest. The brake pedal feel is not too great either. The 60 to 0 mph stopping distance is not comparable to other cars in its class and is a massive 129 feet.

For what it is worth, the Audi does not perform well in terms of braking. The Mercedes Benz, as well as the Porsche, come out on top again in this aspect but the BMW also delivers a good result. There is about a 19 feet difference between the best performers in the segment and the Audi which makes a huge difference in terms of real-world results and crash safety.

Fuel Economy

One of the reasons this category has considered a 2L turbocharged powertrain so much is that they have a need to provide good fuel efficiency. And that aspect, we feel Audi has done a great job because even with the best power output in the segment, it delivers close to the best fuel efficiency figures as well. The fuel tank size is also generous measuring 18.8 gallons. According to the EPA, this car can return 22 MPG in the city, 29 MPG on the highway, and 25 MPG combined which makes it quite frugal. You could go up to 545 miles on a single tank which should really help people who love to take long journeys.

While the Porsche has excelled in many aspects, it has some time to make up in terms of fuel efficiency. It reports that lowest figures in the segment but they are still decent if you ask us. The BMW knocks it out of the park with its fuel-efficiency figures of up to 24 MPG inside the city. However, it loses out on range due to its small fuel tank. We feel the Audi has finally redeemed itself in one segment and it is something its owners look for.

Interior

Another strong point of this car has been its interior quality as well as design. It not only comes with plush details and high-quality craftsmanship but also a wide range of features. The technology used inside this cabin is second to none in the segment and you get the best infotainment system running the latest Audi MMI interface. It delivers a good amount of space as well with seats that are wide and supportive. The ergonomics of this cabin are spot on and users will never feel uncomfortable.

2023 Audi Q5 SUV Front Seats

There are four interior upholstery color options and features like tri-zone automatic climate control wood interior inlays, as well as contrasting stitching, are available. The car also gives you class-leading legroom in every row but the cargo capacity is a bit on the lower side with just 25.9 ft.³. The driving position is great and you also get an eight-way power-adjustable driver seat, heated front seats, universal garage door opener, an integrated toll collection module, and so on. There are plenty of cubbyholes and bottle holders in the cabin as well.

The space allocation inside the cabin is great in this car and you will find yourself with plenty of legroom. Even in the Sportback version, it gives you enough headroom to be comfortable. The obvious sacrifice is in terms of the cargo volume where the BMW leads again. However, 25.9 ft.³ is not something small and we feel that most users will be able to make do with it.

Some standout interior features of the 2023 Audi Q5 include:

  • Heated and power-adjustable front seats
  • Nappa leather upholstery on seats and steering wheel
  • Rain-sensing windshield wipers
  • Driver and passenger seat memory
  • Panoramic Sunroof
  • Tri-zone automatic climate control

How intuitive is the 2023 Audi Q5’s infotainment system?

The latest Audi MMI infotainment system is present in this car and is one of the best we have in the business. It gives you features like a Wi-Fi hotspot, wireless Apple CarPlay as well as Android Auto capability.

2023 Audi Q5 SUV Infotainment System

There is a 12.3-inch driver information display as well as another 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment display along with high-quality switchgear for all of the controls. The digital gauge cluster also provides you with navigation, media, phone controls, a trip computer, gauges, and so on. The sound systems are also nice and you get several upgrades in that area.

Listed below are some other standout features available with the Audi Q5:

  • Digital driver display
  • Touchscreen infotainment system
  • Android Auto and Apple Carplay
  • Bluetooth and 4G LTE WiFi
  • Satellite and HD radio
  • Media USB Input
  • Auxiliary Audio Input
Exterior

In its second generation right now, this car’s design language has matured a lot and we feel that it is truly timeless. Last year, the Audi Q5 S Line appearance package was made standard in the car and comes with sporty design details, along with 18-inch alloy wheels. If you opt for the black optic package, you also get several blacked-out details that make the car look menacing, along with 20-inch alloy wheels that look sinister. The single-frame grille adorns the front fascia and the road presence is quite good.

2023 Audi Q5 SUV Front Angle View

The ground clearance is good at 8.2 inches and the car can make it through most everyday situations with ease. Although it is not an off-roader by any means, it has soft-roading capabilities that its competitors do not have. The exterior dimensions make it slightly smaller than the rivals in the car is quite heavy at 4105 lbs.

The BMW X3 is the longest and tallest car in the segment but the Porsche is the widest. The Audi is not diminutive if but it is modest in terms of the dimensions as we can observe. Despite this, it is the heaviest which may be why it suffers a bit in terms of acceleration. The Mercedes has the longest wheelbase in the segment and it translates a bit to better straight-line stability.

Some of the standout exterior features include:

  • Heated side-view mirrors
  • Rear Spoiler
  • Body-colored door handles and side-view mirrors
  • Panoramic Sunroof
  • LED Daytime Running Light
  • Rain Sensing Wipers
  • Galvanized steel panels
  • Power liftgate with power door lock
Safety

The 2023 Audi Q5 has great potential in terms of safety. It has had a perfect five-star safety rating from NHTSA and has also been given the honor of ‘Top Safety Pick +’ by the IIHS. This year sees the boiling down of safety features down to the lowest trim levels and now every Audi Q5 comes with forward collision warning, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitor, lane departure warning, and so on.

Some of the standout safety features available with the 2023 Audi Q5 include

  • Forward-collision warning and automated emergency braking
  • Blind-spot monitoring
  • Lane-departure warning
  • Driver Attention Warning
  • Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Hill Start Assist
Competition

2023 Audi Q5 vs 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class

The Mercedes Benz GLC is the benchmark in several aspects including straight-line performance, interior design, and so on. It is also a newer car that was introduced at a later point than the Audi. One more great thing about it this that it is cheaper and we would pick the Mercedes as a first choice.

2022 Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class

2023 Audi Q5 vs 2022 Porsche Macan

The Porsche Macan is a much more expensive choice in the segment and is the most exotic one without a doubt. However, it has sportscar-like driving abilities that you won’t find in anything in the segment. In terms of interior quality, both cars are evenly matched and are also based on the same chassis. We feel Porsche has done a much better job of doing the chassis as well as the suspension.

2022 Porsche Macan

2023 Audi Q5 vs 2022 BMW X3

The BMW X3 has been the segment leader for several years now and with good reason. The car gives you the best fuel efficiency in the segment, decent performance, great driving dynamics, and very comfortable interiors. It also promises better ride quality and one feels that one gets more bang for their buck with the BMW.

2022 BMW X3
Final Verdict

The Audi Q5 is a good car without a doubt but the problem is that it faces competition in the category that has so many excellent cars. We feel that despite certain advantages the vehicle offers, its ride quality, as well as muted looks, don’t sit well with many. We feel that the BMW X3 is a better all-rounder and would be the car we would recommend to readers. Don’t get us wrong, the Audi has no fault on its own but simply does not remain as competitive as the BMW.
