Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

The 2022 Q5 Plug-in-hybrid SUV is a top-of-the-line SUV in Audi's lineup. The 2.0 L Turbocharged Direct Injection, or TDI engine, is also featured in this vehicle along with the 48 Volt Electric Motor Drive system. This system allows for ranges up to 30 miles on all-electric power alone when fully charged. The Audi Q5 Plug-In Hybrid SUV has been introduced to compete directly with other renowned hybrid SUVs like the BMW X5 Plug-In Hybrid SUV, Lexus NX 300h Luxury, and Mercedes-Benz GLC 350e plug-in hybrid.

Features

Audi's Q5 model family will be offered three powertrain options in 2022. The Audi Q5 45 TFSI is a turbocharged engine that produces 261 horsepower, the Audi Q5 55 TFSI is a plug-in hybrid that generates 362 horsepower, and the Audi SQ5 is a turbocharged engine that develops 349 horsepower. Audi's Quattro all-wheel drive is standard on all models. Every model is then available in premium, premium plus, and prestige trim levels, with successive additions of equipment. The Audi Q5 55 TFSI plug-in hybrid model is the focus of our review here in this one.

The 2022 Audi Q5 55 TFSI is available in three distinctive trim levels: Premium, Premium Plus, and Prestige. The base Premium trim comes with a sticker price of $52,900 and will boast a lot of standard features like leather upholstery, heated front seats, a universal garage door opener, a power liftgate, tri-zone automatic climate control, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, front and rear parking sensors, rearview camera, 10.1-inch touchscreen, two USB ports, 10-speaker stereo and a 7-inch digital instrument cluster display.

The Prestige variant has a price tag of $62,350 that adds features like head-up display, 19-speaker Bang & Olufsen stereo, Matrix-design LED headlights, traffic sign recognition, navigation, and ventilated front sport seats with four-way power lumbar adjustments.

On a lighter note, all of the variants in the Audi Q5 lineup offer a wealth of technology and safety features. Powertrains on all models are also efficient and powerful. The plug-in hybrid Audi Q5 55 TFSI Premium Plus model, however, can get up to 30 miles per charge. Plus, you'll find more driver assistance and safety features in the Premium Plus trim than in the base trim.

2022 Audi Q5 Plug-in-hybrid Release date

Engine and Performance
8.0/10

The 2022 Audi plug-in hybrid is powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder TFSI engine coupled with an electric motor. This setup is capable of producing 362 horses of power and 369 pounds of torque. For 2022 MY, Audi has increased the battery capacity which could further enhance the fuel economy. Faster acceleration is possible with the motor's instant torque compared to the engine's base torque.

2022 Audi Q5 plug-in-hybrid SUV Engine Bay

On the performance front, the hybrid Q5 is quicker than the base model. The 2022 Audi Q5 TFSI will run 0-60 mph in 5 seconds and a quarter-mile in 13.6 seconds, reaching a top speed of 130 mph. With standard all-wheel drive, the Q5 offers superior handling and spirited road grip. Despite this, an absence of feedback from the pavement keeps this Audi from feeling particularly sporty. Air suspension is an optional feature that gives you the best ride in most models, but the most comfortable ride is in models with the option.

As a comparison, we note that all the SUVs mentioned have engines with four cylinders paired with electric motors. Among the SUVs here, the Mercedes-Benz GLC 350e produces the most torque, while the Audi Q5 has the most power. In terms of 0-60 times, the Audi Q5 is the fastest SUV here, followed by the BMW X3 plug-in hybrid with a mark of 5.9. The Lexus NX 300h Luxury is the slowest accelerating SUV here.

Fuel Economy
7.0/10

Plug-in hybrids have a good mileage record as one of their most valuable features. As for the Audi, the gasoline in itself is quite good with 23 mpg in cities and 28 mpg on the highway. A single charge can carry it up to 30 miles using only an electric motor. For the 2022 Audi Q5 PHEV SUV, a combined mileage of 65 mpg is expected. The 2022 Audi Q5 PHEV will deliver approximately 30 miles on a full charge, an increase of 10 miles over its predecessor. Overall, this helps improve the Audi Q5's MPGe to 65. Furthermore, the Audi Q5 2022 is equipped with a very large fuel capacity of 15.3 gallons.

EPA rating is not available for plug-in hybrids, so we could not find exact figures for some contenders. The Lexus NX 300h Luxury returns impressive fuel economy with 33 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway. Mercedes-Benz GLC 350e features a combined fuel economy of 68 mpg and a maximum range of 360 miles.

Interior
8.0/10

The 2022 Audi Q5 hybrid SUV is the perfect combination of luxury and fuel economy. Featuring a luxurious interior and comfortable drive, this vehicle may replace your current sport/utility vehicle if it isn't already. Comparing the 2022 Audi to other vehicles in its class shows how different they can be, tiny instrumentation screens, less legroom, and small back doors. But the 2022 Audi SUV has a spacious interior allowing 5 adults to easily fit, large front side windows that allow you to see more clearly without straining, and features such as remote start that help regulate temperatures inside. Despite its compact size, the Audi Q5 offers a high-quality cabin that marks the class as a luxury compact SUV. As standard, you'll find leather seats and gorgeous wood trim pieces, with the option to upgrade to plush Nappa leather and aluminum or carbon fiber inlays.

2022 Audi Q5 plug-in-hybrid SUV Front Row Seats

The 2022 Audi Q5 plug-in hybrid crossover holds five people comfortably. The front seats are supportive and will support taller drivers during long trips; however, the armrests and center console will not allow taller drivers to be completely comfortable. The back of the vehicle provides enough space for adult passengers to feel comfortable. As far as cargo space goes, the Audi Q5 fails to meet class standards. If you fold down the back seats, you can get a maximum of 54 cubic feet behind the second row. The standard body style offers 25.1 cubic feet behind the second row.

All the SUVs in the competition can seat five people. However, the Mercedes-Benz GLC 350e and the Lexus NX 300h Luxury have relatively congested seating areas. Even their rear legroom falls short, a statistic for which the BMW Q5 and Audi X3 hybrid excel. Audi Q5 and BMW X3 both have generous amounts of space and can comfortably seat five adults. Some of the notable features of the 2022 Audi Q5 plug-in hybrid include:

  • Tri-zone automatic climate control
  • 7-inch digital instrument cluster
  • Auto-dimming rearview mirror
  • Push-button start
  • Panoramic sunroof
  • Leather upholstery
  • Heated front seats
  • Blind-spot monitoring

How intuitive is the 2022 Audi Plug-in hybrid SUV’s Infotainment System?

2022 Audi Q5 plug-in-hybrid SUV Infotainment System

The 2022 Audi Q5 plug-in hybrid will be the heaviest SUV, as can be seen from previous readings. Aerodynamics is also favored by its very gentle proportions, which gives it an advantage over the drag coefficient. As the lightest and most compact SUV, the Lexus NX 300h has cramped interior space because of its size. In addition to its best wheelbase, Mercedes-Benz also stands taller than the competition. These are some notable features of the exterior:

  • Matrix-design LED Headlights and DRLs
  • LED taillights
  • Power windows
  • Heated and power-folding outside mirrors

2022 Audi Plug-in hybrid SUV vs 2021 Lexus NX 300h Luxury

The 2022 Audi e-tron is a fully electric version of the German manufacturer's popular Q5 SUV. On the other hand, the 2021 Lexus NX 300h Luxury is a gasoline-hybrid version of its flagship crossover SUV.

2021 Lexus NX 300h Luxury

However, the Lexus falls short in terms of power and also lags in acceleration tests. In contrast, it is cheaper and has more safety features than the Audi Q5 hybrid.

2022 Audi Plug-in hybrid SUV vs the 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLC 350e Plug-in hybrid

It is no surprise that both of these SUVs have an excellent reputation in the SUV segment. In terms of price and performance, the Mercedes-Benz GLC 350e and 2021 Audi Q5 PHEV are comparable.

2021 Mercedes-Benz GLC 350e Plug-in hybrid

The Q5 has a slight advantage in terms of power output, but the GLC is on par with it in terms of torque. Both vehicles have modern interiors that are exceptionally luxurious. However, the Q5 appears to be larger and more convenient than the GLC.

2022 Audi Plug-in hybrid SUV vs the 2021 BMW X3 Plug-in hybrid

The BMW X3 hybrid is one of the top-ranking luxury compact SUVs and is just ahead of the Q5 hybrid in terms of features. Both SUVs are premium models, with energetic engines, engaging handling, and user-friendly technology.

2021 BMW X3 Plug-in hybrid

BMW's better-predicted reliability score and greater cargo capacity make it the better choice. On the other hand, the Q5 offers better mileage and a more convenient cabin than the X3.

Final Verdict

The Audi Q5 plug-in hybrid is a nice electric SUV that has plenty of space and has the ability to use electricity or gasoline. The SUV is an attractive plug-in hybrid that gets good fuel efficiency numbers with that being said, the all-electric range isn't that impressive. At this time, there are no other cars on the market by any other manufacturer that match the 2022 Audi plug-in hybrid SUV for its performance. The car can be expensive but offers some savings when compared to similar vehicles.
