With the coupe body-style taking the market by fancy, it was only obvious that Audi would take their most popular and highest-selling vehicle in the country, the Audi Q5, and give it a similar treatment to better cater to the taste of a wider range of audience. The Q5 Sportback banks on the premium well-built cabin of the Q5 and comes loaded with additional creature comforts and technology to grab more eyeballs and justify the higher asking price of this compact coupe SUV or a crossover.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

Launched completely new this year, the 2021 Audi Q5 Sportback gets sportier handling, sporty front seats, and a panoramic sunroof as standard apart from the sloping roofline to differentiate from the Q5 twin. It is powered by the same mild-hybrid 44 TFSI 261 horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder unit but misses out on the larger 55 TFSI found on the Q5 hybrid. It manages to undercut the main rivals from its homeland, the BMW X4, and the Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe as it begins at an MSRP of $48,895.

Features

Audi has done a great job at not only keeping the prices lower than its competitors but also packaging in many of the features as standard with the Q5 Sportback. The Quattro AWD is standard and the Sportback features front and rear parking sensors, a rearview camera, three-zone climate control, and leather upholstery as standard. Higher trims add more convenience features and creature comforts and are yet priced very competitively.

Which trim should you buy?

The Premium Plus trim is the best seller for the Q5 mainly because of the added features that add more value to the car and make living with it every day much easier and safer, and hence should be the trim to go for.

Engine and Performance
9.0/10

Under the hood, the 2021 Q5 Sportback is powered by a 2-liter turbocharged four-cylinder and a 12V mild-hybrid engine that offers a seamless surge of low-end torque for the quick getaways. The powertrain is rated at 261 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque, all of which is sent to all four wheels through the Quattro all-wheel-drive system and the seven-speed dual-clutch transmission as standard.

The low-end grunt helps the Q5 get in and out of traffic in the city with relative ease and can also get to higher speeds effortlessly thanks to its slick-shifting automatic transmission. The performance is no doubt pretty strong from this class-leading output of this powertrain which takes just 5.7 seconds for the 0-60 mph sprint, while the quarter-mile can be done in just a sliver over 14 seconds. The Q5 can also tow 4,400 lbs while the top speed has been limited to 130 mph.

In spite of the high engine output of the Q5 Sportback, it is still the most affordable compact coupe luxury SUV one can buy today. Both the Mercedes GLC 300 coupe and the BMW X4 are priced very similarly to one another and are slower than the Audi. While the Mercedes is just marginally slower in the straight-line acceleration tests, the BMW is over half a second behind the Audi. Both the rivals also have a much lower towing capacity to offer.

How does the 2021 Audi Q5 Sportback SUV handle?

With the regular Audi Q5 being marketed as the comfortable cruiser, the Q5 Sportback drifts to be sportier than being an off-road SUV. The suspension setup has been stiffened up a little by Audi for a more composed ride when tackling corners. The steering is light and precise that further aids confidence when pushing it into the corners. That being said, it lacks the feedback which keeps it from being much more entertaining to drive.

That being said, the Q5 Sportback does not become harsh in any way as it tackles broken roads relatively well and continues to be a comfortable highway cruiser. Even when opting for the optional 20-inch wheels, the ride is never too harsh like many of the M-badged X4 but it also isn’t the sportiest SUV out there as the Q5 will lean towards understeer when pushed hard.

2021 Audi Q5 Sportback Braking Performance

The standard Quattro AWD system offers immense grip in almost all scenarios and together with the pretty large Brembo disc brakes at all ends, it has some pretty good stopping power to offer. The 13.3-inch front and 13-inch rear rotors do a fine job of stopping the under 4,200 lbs SUV in just 114 feet of braking distance.

The BMW X4 too has almost the similarly sized brakes and also weighs quite identical to the Q5 Sportback, and yet the X4 travels four feet more than the Audi before it comes to a complete halt in the 60-0 mph panic braking test. The GLC 300 is the star in this segment as it has the shortest stopping distance amongst the three Germans.

Fuel Economy
9.0/10

The 12-volt mild hybrid system is claimed to not only offer superior low-end torque but also aid in the efficiency department. That being said, it is nothing outrageously frugal by any means as the EPA rates it for a maximum of 28 mpg on the highways and 25 combined. Not to mention, these figures are with the standard AWD drivetrain. The large 18.5-gallon fuel tank is sufficient enough to offer a driving range of around 450 miles between fuel stops.

The BMW offers slightly better highway fuel economy figures as compared to the Audi, but both offer very similar fuel efficiency figures. The Mercedes on the other hand consumes a bit more fuel than the other two and both the X4 and Mercedes GLC 300 employ a smaller gas tank than the Q5 which further affects their driving ranges. Though this translates to more frequent gas station visits, the difference is pretty small.

Interior
8.5/10

The Q5 Sportback continues with the timeless and sophisticated cabin design that incorporates premium materials and a high-quality build that we have come to know Audi for. The minimalist dashboard design with a floating infotainment screen at its center might just do the trick for many buyers along with the sleek air-con vents under which the ambient lighting is neatly integrated. The overall scheme of the cabin is dark which is aided by the standard panoramic sunroof.

There are plenty of features that also make their way as standard throughout the Sportback’s lineup along with plenty of other premium features that make the car feel worth its asking price. The features include a head-up display with traffic sign recognition, heated reclining rear seat, premium genuine wood interior trims, leather upholstery all around the cabin illuminated aluminum door sills amongst various other premium features.

In terms of cabin space, there is no shortage whatsoever throughout its cabin. The front row has enough legroom to accommodate even taller occupants rather well while the rear seat gets enough legroom to be considered class-leading. That being said, the headroom is pretty limited for both front and rear-seat passengers. The luggage compartment is pretty large though at 25.1 cu-ft which is also the best in business, which can further be extended to 53.1 cu-ft by folding down the rear seat.

There is no doubt that the Audi Q5 Sportback offers the most spacious cabin by quite a margin over its rivals. The Mercedes GLC comes in at a close second with decent rear-seat space, but it too falls short on the trunk capacity. The BMW X4 is the most cramped in this comparison as it has rear-seat legroom that is just on par with modern-day compact sedans, but it also offers the best headroom at the front which could be a deal-breaker for taller guys. Some of the interior features in the 2021 Audi Q5 Sportback are:

  • 12-Way Power Driver Seat and 8-Way Power Passenger Seat with Power 4-Way Driver Lumbar
  • Heated and Ventilated Sport Bucket Front Seats
  • 40-20-40 Folding Split-Bench Heated Manual Reclining Fold Forward Rear Seat with Manual Fore/Aft
  • Leather Seating Surfaces and Leather/Metal-Look Steering Wheel & Gear Shifter
  • Genuine Wood interior trim and Leatherette Door Trim Insert
  • Dual Zone Front Automatic Air Conditioning and Rear HVAC with Separate Controls
  • HomeLink Garage Door Transmitter
  • Head-up Display

What’s there to keep you entertained?

There might hardly be any tech-enthusiast that would not like Audi’s multimedia interface and the 10.1-inch MIB 3 system works rather well. It is intuitive to use with crisp and attractive graphics which together with the 12.3-inch Virtual Cockpit Digital Instrumentation Display offered on the Premium Plus and Prestige trim, elevates the tech-savvy nature of the cabin.

As standard, there is a 10-speaker audio system on offer which gets updated to a thumping Bang & Olufsen 3D sound system that the audiophiles would thoroughly enjoy. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are standard and can be used wirelessly while the integrated navigation system offers great graphics and looks very futuristic on the driver’s digital instrument cluster. Some of the infotainment features include:

  • 10.1-inch Audi MIB 3 touchscreen infotainment system
  • 12.3-inch Virtual Cockpit Digital Instrumentation Display
  • 19-speaker Bang & Olufsen 3D Sound System
  • Audi smartphone interface with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration
  • Audi connect CARE subscription
  • HD Radio and Satellite Radio
  • Integrated navigation system
Exterior
7.0/10

The new Q5 Sportback shares Audi’s new single-frame grille that was unveiled with the new generation of Audi Q5. The difference between the two SUVs is majorly on the rear three-quarter of the SUV where the roof of the Sportback slopes down drastically which looks pretty slick when looked at from the sides. That being said, the rear end looks too busy with the chunky rear bumper with thick silver accent, chrome bar that sits right below the taillights and runs across its width, and the awkward-looking rear spoiler.

LED headlights and tail lights are standard while the signature Audi light animation and Audi's matrix-design LED technology is offered only on the Prestige trim. As standard, the 2021 Q5 Sportback offers a powered liftgate, front and rear fog lamps, and 19-inch five double-arm two-tone wheels while the larger 20-inch wheels will cost an additional $800. Though there is not much difference in the design of both those wheels.

Though the Audi Q5 has the smallest footprint in terms of its exterior dimensions when compared to its German rivals, it does well to offer the best in class cabin space. The X4 is the largest of the three and yet weighs lower than the Audi. The Mercedes SUV too is larger than the Audi and yet weighs the least. The Q5 Sportback has the highest ground clearance on offer while the GLC 300 rides much lower to the ground. Some of the exterior features in the 2021 Audi Q5 Sportback are:

  • Programmable Projector Beam Auto-Leveling, Auto High-Beam, Daytime Running Lights, Preference Setting Headlamps
  • LED Brakelights
  • Front And Rear Fog Lamps
  • Power Liftgate and Lip Spoiler
  • Speed Sensitive Rain Detecting Variable Intermittent Wipers with Heated Jets
  • Power Heated Side Mirrors with Turn Signal Indicator
  • Express Open/Close Sliding And Tilting Glass Panoramic Sunroof with Power Sunshade
  • 19-inch 5-Double-Arm Design Bi-Color Finish Alloy Wheels
Safety
8.0/10

There is no doubt that Audi does not take the safety of their esteemed customers lightly and that can be proved with the fact that the Audi Q5 Sportback was rated with a perfect 5-star overall rating by the NHTSA and also received the “Top Safety Pick+” from the IIHS for performing extremely well in the safety tests conducted by them for the 2021 model year.

The Q5 Sportback is packed with safety features to the brim and gets various safety and driver assistance features such as forward collision warning, lane departure warning, cruise control, a rearview camera, and automatic emergency braking standard. Active lane assist, adaptive cruise control, and a top-view camera are added to the Premium Plus trim. Some of the safety features in the 2021 Audi Q5 Sportback are:

  • Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and Driveline Traction Control
  • Front Collision Mitigation and Forward Collision Warning
  • Lane Departure Warning and Active Lane Keeping Assist
  • Adaptive Cruise Control with Traffic Jam Assist
  • Audi Side Assist Blind Spot Monitoring
  • Audi Pre Sense City And Audi Pre Sense Rear

2021 Audi Q5 Sportback SUV vs BMW X4 xDrive30i

The BMW X4 is the sportier and coupe version of the X3 SUV similar to the Q5 and similar to other BMW cars, is known for its superior driving and handling dynamics. Though it lacks power and is slower off the line, the X4 is a lot more fun to drive. That being said, the Q5 offers a much more spacious cabin that is feature-loaded. The ride too is much more comfortable than the BMW while the list of safety features and technology offered is pretty extensive with the Q5 Sportback.

2021 Audi Q5 Sportback SUV vs Mercedes-Benz GLC 300 4MATIC Coupe

The Mercedes-Benz GLC coupe too is priced much higher than the Q5 Sportback and also has a performance that is more in line with the Audi. That being said, the cabin too is pretty spacious and feature-loaded but it lacks the range of features and technology offered as standard by Audi. The Q5 is more frugal and gets a lot more driver assistance features with top quality safety ratings.

Final Verdict

The Audi Q5 Sportback is an SUV for those who like to add a bit of style and suave to their conventional luxury compact SUV without it being too much over the top. The performance is pretty quick and the handling and ride quality has improved over Q5 to suit a more enthusiastic drive. With the affordable pricing and all the latest technology and safety functions on offer, the 2021 Audi Q5 Sportback is one of the best bang for your bucks in this segment.
