The exotic looking 2020 Audi R8 Coupe may look identical to its original model but the newer version has undergone a drastic makeover and has shed few pounds while adding some of the contemporary technologies along with a sheer improvement in terms of performance in its repertoire. After being featured in the Iron man movie, which added to its cool quotient and head-turning looks. Maintaining the curb appeal of the Quattro R8 the new model's all-wheel-drive is based on is sister car Lamborghini Huracan. It's cutting-edge design and technology ups the ante and is sure to draw much attention from its buyers.

Still using the same engine as its predecessors, which is a naturally aspirated FSI V10. This motor has been tweaked this year to increase the power output to 562 horsepower. In addition to that, the car now produces 406 lb-ft of torque, these numbers are enough to launch the car from zero to 60 mph in less than 3.5 seconds. Surprisingly, even with its Performance package, it does not cost more than $200,000.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

Undoubtedly the 2020 Audi R8 has been masterfully crafted and has an air of sophistication and elegance which only a few cars in the market can boast of. It is observed that the Audi R8 resembles somewhat to Lamborghini Huracan in terms of engine and transmission as both of them use the V-10 engine and dual-clutch transmission.

For the 2020 year, the R8 coupe is available in two trims. Talking about the base trim which is powered by a 5.2L FSI V10 that gives out 562 horsepower, a bump of 30 hp from the previous year version. For those hungry for a little more power, there is the R8 Performance which can surely help in fulfilling your horsepower need with its upgraded V10 that now produces 611 horsepower and 417 lb-ft of torque. Both the trims are mostly identical everywhere else. While, the Performance trim allows you to put more carbon-fiber options around the interior and exterior of the car, helping in uplifting the aesthetic appeal of your R8 even more.

We Recommend

Although the Performance trim undoubtedly has better appeal, we still recommend you sticking to the base trim as it is still a perfect looking car. Even though it is 0.2-second slower in 0-60 time but that is something liveable and similar fun to drive. Don’t forget you will save a whopping 24 grand while going for the base trim.

Engine and Performance

Powered by the 5.2-liter FSI V10 engine the 2020 Audi R8 generates a whopping 562 hp and 406 pound-feet of torque. Both the trim levels come with all-wheel drive and a seven-speed automated manual transmission "S Tronic" which is standard across the lineup. The Quattro all-wheel-drive system boosts up the engine which can send up to 100 percent of torque to the front axle as and when required. The brand claims that the V10 Plus could reach up to 205 mph as its maximum capacity. This R8 is a perfect balance between practicality and all-out performance, as it can be a good cruise when driven in Comfort mode or tear up the back roads with Sport mode.

If you want to save a few thousand grand and still make more power and torque, the GT-R would never disappoint you in any situation. Moreover, the R8 lacks to match the legendary handling and transmission of the Porsche 911.

Providing you with an instantaneous response off the line, the R8 is capable of sweet but controlled acceleration. Even with the controlled acceleration to save your neck from snapping backward, it still manages to reach 60 mph from naught in 3.3 sec, which is more than good enough. Talking about the top speed which is 202 mph, even greater than both the Nissan GT-R Track Edition(196 mph) and the Acura NSX(191 mph).

Now the 2020 Audi R8 comes standard with carbon-ceramic brakes in all trims. As a result of this, the R8 is now capable of showing much better braking numbers over the rest of its competition. The R8 has been making rave review due to its super braking capabilities as its brake pedals are monumentally effective and seem fade resistant on the road.

2020 Audi R8 Spyder has 14.4 inches of Front Brake

There are only a few cars out there that are so rewarding and effortless to accelerate and make it stop. Holding a capability to come to a full stop from moving at 60 mph within 97 feet, which is commendable distance considering the curb weight is upwards of 3700lbs. This timing makes it the second-best braking car in its segment.

Even after weighing the heaviest of the lot, the GT-R still manages to offer similar braking performance. Still, the R8 performs better than the 911 Turbo, owing to its excellent Quattro AWD and superior ABS.

Ride and Handling

The biggest USP of Audi performance cars is their rally winning Quattro AWD drive system. Still carrying the legacy in a high note, the advanced Quattro system within the Audi R8 pack’s everything to make it perform and handle as the best of what Audi learner from winning the rally championships back in the day. Being exceptionally capable the Audi R8 is fitted with more aggressive damper setup which soaks up bumps quite remarkably and provides a comfortable ride that you could tolerate without fatigue on longer hauls. The four drive modes on the Audi Drive-Select allows the car to adapt according to your need of a relaxing drive across Route 66 or a blistering lap of Laguna Seca. The steering setup which is similar in both the trims is quite direct and relays information from the road to the driver's hands with only a mild filter. Additionally, several driver assist systems make the car semi-autonomous for long drives.

Fuel Economy

As no official EPA rating are available for the2020 R8 Coupe. As the 5.2L V10 has been tuned to provide better fuel economy when not pushed hard. Even though Audi confirmed that this R8 would provide better fuel economy than any of the cars in its segment, giving a 20 mpg on the highway. But, while speaking about city, the R8 delivers 13 mpg which is quite low for a sports car but this what you pay for the best sports car by the four-ringed marque. Along with a bigger capacity 21.1-gallon fuel tank, this car is capable of taking you for a grand tour.

Talking competition, being a hybrid supercar, the Acura NSX showcases the best fuel economy figures. Showcasing similar combined mpg figures is te Porsche 911 with 21mpg combined. In third place is the Nissan GT-R with 18mpg combined. While the R8 comes out last in this comparison of fuel economy with 16mpg combined.

Audi is known for offering premium interior with ultimate color combination and upholstery. Audi R8 interior is top-notch with premium packing. While the front console is very upmarket and classy. With seats covered in Nappa leather, making it more comfortable. Audi’s MMI navigation system is a quick way to stay connected and navigate your routes via google earth. The multi-function steering wheel that includes many street/track functions, makes many things easy for the driver. The Performance trim can grant you access to enough carbon fiber that would cause the McLaren 570S to double-check itself in the mirror.

2020 Audi R8 Spyder Front Seats

The seats are made up of premium material that’s why they are cozy and comfortable. The seats are 8-way power adjustable and the steering wheel supports tilting-and-telescopic adjustments. Taking two passengers into consideration, there is enough space and headroom for the driver and the co-passenger. Equipped with Dual-Zone climate control as standard across both the trims which makes life much easier. However, the equipment space is limited in comparison to competitors like Acura NCX and Nissan GT-R.

Passenger Capacity

Front Room(Head/Shoulder/Leg)(in.)

Perfect comparison is not possible as two cars support 4 passengers while the other two offer two seats only. Still, the R8 manages to provide the best interior space amongst its rivals followed by Porsche 911 with identical figures.

Infotainment System

Audi manages to put some effort into the insides of the R8 too. With a 12.3inch interactive center console display which serves as a reverse backup camera and also makes up for the infotainment system in the same display unit, which is considered as one of the most exotic features of the Audi R8. Its customizable digital gauge display ups the ante as it provides a driver-centric feeling inside the cabin. As the infotainment supports Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, voice control and handwriting recognition.

The responsive MMI system is offered with sharp graphics but the absence of a secondary display screen in the dashboard can be easily spotted. Not only that the sound system comes embedded with LED ambient lighting apart from having an awesome 13-speaker 550-Watt Bang & Olufsen sound system. Below is the list of infotainment feature that is tagged along with the new Audi R8: -

  • Apple CarPlay
  • Android Auto
  • 4G LTE
  • Wi-Fi hotspot
  • Bluetooth
  • AUX input
  • Navigation
  • USB
  • Bang & Olufsen sound system.

Interior Features

Audi has offered a wide range of standard fitments with the new R8. Audi’s virtual cockpit is standard on all models that make it distinguished among the competitors.

  • Audi's Drive Select variable drive modes
  • Magnetic shocks
  • Audi’s Virtual Cockpit
  • Audi’s MMI infotainment interface
  • Audi Connect
  • Power-folding side mirrors
  • Auto-dimming
  • Spoiler
  • 13-speaker Bang and Olufsen sound system

Cargo Volume

The R8 is a bit disappointing when it comes to storage capabilities as its tiny 8.0 ft of cubic space detracts from the R8's everyday usability. But, going by the sportscar category, it offers a respectable amount of space to store your belongings as it can only take in two soft overnight bags into the snout, and maybe to some extent a working case which is only good enough for the daily commute. Inside the cabin, you can have a shallow glove box, two small door pockets, a decent-sized bin ahead of the shift lever and two cup holders behind the occupants' elbow cover among others.

Storage Volume(ft.3)

Again, the Nissan GT-R features the best cargo space capability followed by the R8. while both other rivals offers almost half the space.

The attractive looking coupe has a distinct front end joined by a malevolent looking DRLs along with the aggressive headlights which point sharply to the edges of the nose. Inspired by the R8 LMS GT3 and GT4 race cars, the front 3 faux inlets above the grille looks fabulous. The rear is well crafted giving it a tough look with a broad stance. Having lost some weight, the R8 has not only complemented its performance but has affected its overall look too. Regardless of which version you choose the R8 would still be a flashy, conspicuous four-wheeled gem. As per the customer's wish, Audi offers R8 in the matte exterior paint along with upgraded 20-inch Y-Spoked rollers with performance summer tires. The Performance trim allows you to blackout all Audi badges and paints the brake calipers as red.

According to ground clearance, the Audi R8 Coupe is certainly a high-headed car as it has a ground clearance of 4.3 inches with an option of a 2-inch lift, making it suitable for speed bumps on city roads. Talking about roof height, the R8 comes second after the NSX with 48.8-inch height of the roof which is a decent height and more practicality.

Just like most of the low-volume sports cars the 2017 variant of the R8 has neither been evaluated or tested by the NHSTA or IIHS. However, you can be rest assured to be safe to drive it as Audi is known for its high standard safety and reliability features it has come up with new Aluminium and carbon-fiber hybrid platform which is stronger than ever. As usual, there are four airbags, multi-stage stability control, and carbon-ceramic brakes but lack some of the important features like autonomous emergency brakingor blind-spot monitoring. Several driving assists such as Adaptive Cruise Control and Lane Keeping Assists are also present in the R8. Additionally, the R8 is also equipped with carbon-ceramic brakes which are standard on all models.

Audi R8 Spyder vs Porsche 911 Turbo

The Audi R8 is such a car that will never mind being used daily as that is what it is capable of delivering. Like the 911 Turbo is much more suited for track use. It is born of the Nurburgring and feels right at home when devouring corners with fierce, aggressive tempo. However, the Audi R8 is presented as more of a performance-touring hybrid. So, if you wish to take it out only for track days then you might opt for the 911 Turbo. Otherwise, the R8 will perform as a civilized car for some of the weekdays and a few fun laps on the weekend. You can clearly notice the difference in the first test drive.

2020 Porsche 911 Turbo

Audi R8 Spyder vs Acura NSX

While the R8 is a more conventional sports coupe, Acura NSX is a supercar and it is available in the hybrid version with a more modern take. It is powered by a twin-turbo V6 engine and three electric motors. It has also got faster acceleration, notably, it goes o-60 mph in just 3 seconds. The NSX’s seats are comfortable and the cabin provided a good amount of space. But, one place where the R8 takes the upper hand is providing a more hands-on approach with maneuverability and luxury

2020 Acura NSX

Audi R8 Spyder vs Nissan GT-R Track Edition

The Nissan GTR is something that values performance over everything else. The R8 consists of more safety features than the GT-R. But, the GTR is more spacious than the R8 and if you are looking for a performance car with an efficient engine, then Nissan GTR is a good pick. If luxury along with performance is your preference, then nothing beats the R8 Both the cars have powerful engines and AWD as standard, yet the GT-R wouldn’t be a dull choice.

2020 Nissan GT-R
Final Verdict

The 2020 version of the Audi R8 Coupe has lightning-fast reflexes along with sharp, crisp steering, and moreover better brakes. It also features one of the best adjustable steering that Audi has ever come up with. Undoubtedly the R8 has been masterfully crafted and has an air of sophistication and elegance which only a few cars can in the market boast of. The engine and driving ability are simply mind-blowing. It is one of those supercars that one can drive regularly. It has got refined and upmarket interior with plenty of user-friendly technology. It is observed that the 2020 Audi R8 and Lamborghini Huracanare somewhat similar as both of them use the V-10 engine and dual-clutch transmission. we might have the perfect balance of down-to-earth usability and loud-and-fast track fury. Despite having a similar platform, the R8 certainly plays as it understated role with more aplomb and elegance which is sure to make some heads turn.
