Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

Starting at an MSRP of $61,645, it is priced at the segment that gives it ample competition in the form of the Porsche 718 Boxster S, BMW M440i Convertible, and Mercedes-Benz AMG C 43 Convertible. All of these have enjoyed a fair share of the market and continue to do so. They are all very capable versions of excellent cars and hence make for a very tough competition. Let us see what everyone else around the block has to offer, and how the Audi performs in the midst of its competition in the detailed review that is about to follow.

The 2022 Audi S5 Cabriolet is offered in three trim levels that are the same as the previous model year. Changes for the 2022 model year only include carbon fiber trim inlays now being standard across all trims as well as 19-inch wheels. There is a RS 5 version for buyers looking for a sporty variant that is much more powerful and expensive. The car is based on the Audi A5, which is in turn based on Audi A4. All these cars are reviewed separately. The base trim level itself is loaded with features such as LED headlights, panoramic sunroof, three-zone automatic climate control, leather, and faux suede upholstery, LED ambient lighting, and so on.

We Recommend

There is a lot of choices offered in terms of trims alone because there the trims are priced in a very wide range. Audi also offers a lot of packages in all trim levels including the S Sport package, warm weather package, black optic package, and so on. With The maximum benefits of all of these things, we would recommend that you go with the Premium Plus trim level. Although it is significantly more expensive than the base trim, the car is equally well loaded and gives you the complete experience that one must get from a sophisticated car such as the Audi S5 Cabriolet. We would also recommend equipping the S Sport package as well as the Bang and Olufsen premium sound system.

Release date

In terms of the release date, there has not been much information from the brand. We are expecting that the 2022 model of the Audi S5 Cabriolet will reach showrooms by Fall this year. However, deliveries are expected to start a bit later than that. Unprecedented delays due to the pandemic and the general economic slowdown have affected car manufacturers are not and hence we would excuse Audi for doing this. As for expected changes, they are minimal and are restricted to the very few ones that we have mentioned above.

Engine and Performance

The 2022 Audi S5 Cabriolet comes with a 3.0 L turbocharged V-6 engine that produces 349 hp & 369 lb-ft of torque. The power figures are excellent and make sure that the car is capable on paper. Combine this with a very quick eight-speed automatic transmission from the German brand and the car feels like a rocket of the line. However, due to the heavyweight, the car does not exactly feel that keen when you drive it in the real world. However, its rivals are not exactly light either and the character of the car is very much tolerable.

2022 Audi S5 Cabriolet 3.0L Engine

The drivetrain is all-wheel-drive only as is the tradition with Audi’s. Speaking about outright acceleration, the sedan does really well, stomp on the pedal and it goes from 0 to 60 in just 4.8 seconds and goes on to complete the quarter-mile in 12.9 seconds. Overall we have felt that the powertrain is gently impressive. It is also excellent in terms of handling and feels nimble unlike Audis of the past. The dynamic steering also adds an excellent character to it and overall, it is a very excellent driver's car.

Considering all its rivals, the Audi has a decently powered unit here but the Mercedes sets the benchmark in the segment in terms of acceleration as well as power figures. However, one thing we have to note is that the Mercedes-Benz costs a fair bit extra while the Audi has absolutely terrific pricing. The Porsche is the most expensive car in the segment while also being the least practical and hence does not appeal to the broad set of buyers that the Audi, BMW, or Mercedes does. In terms of performance as well as pricing, Audi has actually struck a really good balance.

Fuel Economy

Being equipped with a 3.0 L V6 engine, one does not expect a lot of fuel efficiency from the Audi. However, thanks to modern technology as well as the expertise of the Volkswagen group in terms of better engines, the car manages to churn out decent fuel efficiency and has a stellar fuel economy of 22 MPG combined. Even the city fuel efficiency is decent compared to the competition at 20 MPG. The 15.3-gallon fuel tank gives it a decent traveling range overall but is not class-leading by any means. However, it is nothing close to the least fuel-efficient car in the class.

The BMW manages to better the fuel efficiency ratings of its competitors by a very fair amount. So much so that it’s almost beyond comparison to pitch it against some of its rivals. The Mercedes-AMG suffers greatly here returning combined fuel efficiency of only 21 MPG while the Audi returns 22 MPG combined. We find that the BMW is truly impressive when it comes to this department but the Mercedes makes up in terms of its fuel efficiency deficit by providing a large fuel tank that brings its range up. However, the BMW still has such a huge lead that it has the highest range as well.

The interior of the 2022 Audi S5 Cabriolet is just like what we have observed in most of the modern Audi’s. Most of the body panels are covered in genuine leather, wood trim, and alloy accents. The design is very elegant and has a certain restraint to it while still allowing the next existence of different shapes inside. The subtle accent lines and wooden inlays make sure the cabin does look like a luxurious one. The material quality is also excellent and deserves a lot of praise. Overall, it is one of the best-looking cabins in the segment.

2022 Audi S5 Cabriolet Dashboard

The switchgear is easy to access and the buttons are large and the labels are very clear. The contours on the seats are well thought out and support the body nicely. The seats are also extremely well-engineered and provide a lot of support and stay comfortable for long journeys. The ergonomics of the cabin are also excellent and make sure that none of the passengers are claustrophobic in a car this small. The overall fit and finish are also excellent even in the category with very competitive rivals.

Rear Row (Headroom/ShoulderRoom/Legroom; inches)

Cargo Capacity (Cubic Feet)

The cargo capacity of the Audi S5 is good enough but as always, the BMW betters it in this regard too. However, it is the Mercedes and the Porsche that have the most cargo capacity in the segment which is a surprise. We find that the Audi has the least cargo space in the segment followed by the BMW. However, the Audi is very much spacious on the inside and feels like the biggest car in its segment when it comes to this particular regard. It also has excellent convenience features and technology features inside that remind you how modern a car is and also make your life very simple. Let’s see some of the interior highlights:

  • Proximity key
  • Keyfob trunk/hatch/door release
  • Front cupholders
  • Rear air conditioning with separate controls
  • Automatic temperature control
  • 2 driver memory seat settings
  • Refrigerated/cooled box
  • Garage door transmitter

What’s there to keep you entertained?

The infotainment systems that have come in Audi’s of late have been very much excellent. The base infotainment system has a 10.1 touch screen and gets Android Auto as a less Apple CarPlay as standard. The system has graphics that are crisp and vibrant and Audi’s virtual cockpit is a very welcome addition and provides excellent information. The sound system is excellent and provides very crisp audio.

2022 Audi S5 Cabriolet Infotainment System

The navigation system is very simple to use and the controls are very straightforward while this is one of the first cars to incorporate voice commands really well. Some of the standard features of the infotainment system are:

  • Audi connect CARE
  • Natural language voice control system
  • Audi smartphone interface with Apple CarPlay and Google Android Auto for compatible devices
  • Audi connect CARE assistance and security services with a limited-time subscription
  • Audi sound system with 10 speakers, 6-channel amplifier, and 180 watts
  • MMI touch display with 10.1" screen
  • Cruise control with coast, resume and accelerate features
  • SiriusXM satellite radio
  • HomeLink System
  • SmartAccess key
  • Bluetooth Technology

The 2022 Audi S5 Cabriolet is a true masterpiece in terms of design. There are excellent flowing surfaces that have a certain visual weight to them but all that all the design is tight and dynamic. It breaks away from the typical Audi design language of straight lines and incorporates a lot of curves and a lot of other shapes that give it a sense of dynamism.

The wheel arches and the roofline are especially beautiful and the incredible details Audi has thrown all over its body make it stand out as one of the best-looking cars in the segment despite its rivals being equally good-looking and dashing.

Curb Weight (lbs)

Height (inches)

Ground Clearance (inches)

Wheelbase (inches)

The BMW is the heaviest car in the segment. By dimensions, the Audi is the widest, and the longest vehicle in the group today, and yet it offers the least amount of cargo space. The Porsche is a lot smaller in terms of sheer size but as a compromise in terms of the number of people that can fit in it. The BMW has decent ground clearance. It is surprising to note that the Audi is on the lighter side of the category whereas it traditionally has not been a brand that has ever done so. Some of the features in the 2022 Audi S5 Cabriolet are:

  • Some of the exterior highlights include:
  • Glass rear window
  • Power convertible roof with lining, automatic roll-over protection
  • Metal-look front bumper insert
  • Metal-look rear bumper insert
  • Chrome grille
  • Body-colored door handles
  • Turn signal indicator mirrors
  • Convertible roof wind blocker
  • Rocker panel extensions

The 2022 Audi S5 Cabriolet has a solid safety quotient. However, being a luxury vehicle it has not yet been crash-tested by either IIHS or NHTSA. We have resulted from the 2020 Audi S5 Cabriolet which is crash-tested by the NHTSA and scored an excellent five-star rating. Since the 2022 car is based on the generation that has been running from 2018, we can assume that the ratings would apply for this car as well. Audi has no left no stone unturned in providing safety features to the car. Some standard safety features include:

  • Front and rear ventilated disc brakes
  • Fixed front head restraints
  • Remote activated perimeter/approach lights
  • Side-impact bars
  • Electronic stability
  • Audi pre sense 360
  • Height adjustable front seatbelts
  • Four-wheel ABS brakes
  • 8 airbags
  • Occupant sensing airbags
  • Traction control
  • 4 ABS channels
  • Daytime running lights
  • 4 wheel disc brakes
  • Panic alarm
  • Brake assist
  • ABS and driveline traction control

2022 Audi S5 Cabriolet vs 2022 Porsche 718 Boxster S

The Porsche Boxster is a much smaller and nimble car. However, it does not accelerate as quickly or provide anything close to the fuel efficiency that the Audi does. It also has compromised in terms of the interior as well as cargo space. Overall, it is not as good a car like the Audi if you look at the Porsche as a family car. However, if you want to have the most fun out of it while driving, the Porsche is the car to go for despite its extra cost.

2022 Audi S5 Cabriolet vs 2022 Mercedes-AMG C 43 Convertible

The Mercedes-Benz AMG C 43 convertible has always been the gold standard in this class and continues to be so. But the fact is that the Audi provides nearly just as much at a much cheaper price. The Mercedes offers slightly better cargo space and scores a bit higher in terms of practicality but does not remain as desirable a car like the Audi S5 in terms of most other aspects. It is however the most powerful car on paper as well as in terms of acceleration figures.

2022 Audi S5 Cabriolet vs 2022 BMW M440i Convertible

The BMW M440i is one of the strongest rivals to the Audi. However, the BMW is the better performing as well as better value for money car. It is also fun to drive which while the Audi also is, is not an equal comparison. In terms of fuel efficiency, the BMW scores very excellent results and also has excellent interiors and infotainment features. The Audi has the advantage of having an all-wheel drive. It is a tough choice but we might pick the BMW over the Audi.

2022 BMW M440i Convertible Three Quarter View
Final Verdict

The new Audi S5 Cabriolet is one of the most desirable cars that one can find in the luxury sports car segment. It is offered at a cheaper price than rivals that are equal to it. It provides decent performance in this category and also a good amount of features. It is also one of the most well-built cars that one can find in the market today. One of its only disadvantages is that it has excellent rivals that also manage to achieve the things that it does. But in all other regards, it is a truly good buy in the year 2022 and can be recommended to anyone looking for a fun and practical car.
