Overview

Is it a Sedan? Or is it a Hatchback? Yes, the Audi S7 is a coupe-inspired hatch. With the launch of S7 in 2012, Audi changed the people's mindset that only sedans can be luxurious and offer better power than the hatchbacks. The S7 carries the same architecture as that of the A7 but what hides under its hood is what makes it so unique.

Priced at $79,900 for Premium plus and $82,900 for Prestige trim. The 2017 Audi S7 is fitted with a 4.0-Litre twin turbo V8 with 450 horses and 406-pound feet of torque at 1450 RPM. Interior quality is pretty impressive for such price as it makes many cars in the segment look dated.

S7 is a sportier version of the A7 and feels stable at high speeds giving the driver the confidence they need. Audi's MMI is sublime to use and the buttons are chiseled from a solid block of premium material which give it an expensive look.

Audi S7 is packed with standard features such as Ambient LED interior lighting, 8’ central display screen, USB slots, cellular phones, navigation, Bose surround sound system with subwoofer, Bluetooth wireless phone connectivity and many more. Our recommendation for the best trim. Audi S7 is super loaded with the best tech and if you had to choose the best trim, it would be top of the line prestige trim. However, it does cost some extra cash and most people in the segment won’t bother too much about $3,000 difference between premium plus and prestige trim.

Engine

9.5/10

"The S7's standard adaptive air suspension delivers a smooth ride along with capable handling, a deft balancing act that once again sets this Audi apart. Around turns, the S7 can feel like the heavy and sizable sedan it is, but nonetheless it inspires driver confidence in both enthusiastic cornering and evasive maneuver"-Edmunds

Engine and Transmission

The 2017 Audi S7 packs a brute 4.0-Litre twin-turbocharged V8 that develops 450 horses and 406-pound-feet of torque. The 7-speed Tiptronic transmission is buttery smooth and shifts the gears with ease. This is the same 4-liter engine that comes equipped in the Audi RS7 with a notched up performance than the S7.

Models Audi S7 Premium Plus Mercedes Benz CLS 550 Porsche Panamera 4s Maserati Ghibli S

Torque 406 lb-ft @ 1400 rpm 443 lb-ft @ 1600 rpm 405 lb-ft @ 1750 rpm 406 lb-ft @ 1750 rpm

When comparing the S7 with competition, Only Porsche Panamera 4S comes close to the power figures with 440 horses, but when you compare the torque figures it’s the Mercedes CLS with 443-pound-feet of torque thanks to its 4.7-Liter Bi-turbo V8 which is the most powerful engine in comparison. Price and engine wise Mercedes CLS is the cheapest and has 9G-Tronic transmission but fails in terms of power against the Audi S7.

Acceleration

The S7’s throttle response is extravagant and that roary engine will give you chills as you tap the accelerator hard. Audi S7, with its twin-turbocharged engine, does 0-60MPH in 3.9 seconds and standing quarter mile in 12.4 seconds. These times are possible thanks to its all-wheel-drive system and slick transmission.

Models Audi S7 Premium Plus Mercedes Benz CLS 550 Porsche Panamera 4s Maserati Ghibli S

Engine 4.0L 4.7L 2.9L 3.0L
Emission (Tons/yr of CO2 Emissions @ 15K mi/year) 8.4 8.4 7.7 9.3

In comparison tests, S7 has the fastest time in 0-60MPH, but in quarter-mile run, Porsche Panamera 4S edges it out by 0.1 seconds. Both Mercedes CLS and Maserati Ghibli S do 0-60MPH in 4.9 seconds, but later takes the win in the quarter mile run at 13.2 seconds.

Handling and Steering

Audi S7 might be a hatch but it has got the handling restrains of a sedan. The Audi’s all-wheel-drive system might help the car drive stick to the road but its heavy weight can cause some problems. Take it around some bends and you’ll have a difficult time handling this hunk. Out on the highway, it’s a perfect cruiser. Whether you want to go fast or have a relaxing drive, it does both jobs well thanks to its standard air suspension which can be adjusted by various available drive modes. The Steering provides good feedback from the road at low speed but once you floor that pedal, it becomes difficult to maneuver this 2-ton machine.

Braking

Audi has installed the biggest of discs in the S7. It gets 15.7 inches ventilated front discs and 14 inches ventilated rear discs. It goes from 60 MPH to a complete stop in 109 feet. The S7 weighs in at 4,486 pounds which is quite heavy for a V8 behemoth and it does affect its stopping distance.

Curb Weight (lbs.) 4486 4233 4123 3990
60-0 MPH (ft.) 109 104 101 105

The fact that S7 is the heaviest among the lot, justifies that it doesn’t have the best stopping distance, but it does have the biggest set of brakes in comparison to all. Maserati is the lightest at 3,990 pounds and has the second-best set of brakes, but it doesn’t help it stop that quick and finishes second last with 105 feet. Porsche Panamera 4S might weigh above 4,000 pounds but it has the best stopping distance at 101 feet.

Fuel Economy

6.5/10

Audi S7 has a 7-speed transmission but that is connected to a big V8 which does affect its fuel figures. It manages to do 17 MPG in city driving cycle, 27 MPG in highway driving and when combining city and highway it gives 21 MPG.

Model Audi S7 Premium Plus Mercedes Benz CLS 550 Porsche Panamera 4s Maserati Ghibli S
MPG (city) 17 18 21 16
MPG (highway) 27 26 28 24
MPG (combined) 21 21 23 19

Maserati, being the lightest, having the 8-speed transmission has the worst fuel figures at 16 MPG for the city, 24 MPG for the highway and combined 19 MPG. Porsche Panamera 4S has the best economy figures with 21 MPG city, 28 MPG on the highway and 23 MPG combined.

Interior

8.7/10

"There's so much to like inside the Audi A7 it's hard to know where to start. There are high-quality materials, like standard leather seating, with an upgrade to diamond-stitched higher-quality hides in S7 and RS 7 models"  -  KBB

Seating and Comfort

It mostly is same as the A7 but you do get some racy differences between them so that you are not fooled by the fact that there is a big V8 up ahead under the hood. You do have a lot of options when you buy the car but since it’s no longer made, you’ll have to find an interior that suits your needs.

The interior is pretty sober but carbon fiber inserts, aluminum pedals, contrast dials and S badges ignite the cabin a little. The leather seats are nicely appointed, are comfy, and grips you in corners. The interior space of the S7 is good. Plenty of space in the front but tall passengers might feel cramped in the rear thanks to its sloping roofline design.

Second (Head/Shoulder/Leg) (In.) 36.6/55.9/37.0 36.1/56.5/35.0 N/A N/A

When compared, the CLS has a better front legroom than S7 at 42.1 inches. They both have almost similar front headroom and shoulder room at 36.9 inches and 57.2 inches. Figures for Porsche and Maserati are currently unavailable but will be updated later.

Infotainment

Infotainment is very user-friendly and easy to use. The best part is that it can be tucked away to give you a look of a clutter free dash. The sat nav is standard but you don’t get the latest infotainment which costs some extra cash along with the new 3D maps option. It is good but the new infotainment is much better. Rest you have all the basic features such as Bluetooth, USB ports, AM/FM etc. to give you a fun, daily drive.

Cargo Space

Being designed from an estate A6, the A7 has a sloping roofline and a really neat boot space. It measures at 24.5 cubic feet, pretty impressive for a Sportback styled vehicle. This is the biggest advantage that S7 has as the car has extremely large boot which allows you to carry more luggage.

Model Audi S7 Premium Plus Mercedes Benz CLS 550 Porsche Panamera 4s Maserati Ghibli S
Cargo Volume (ft.3) 24.5 15.3 17.4 17.7

In comparison, no one comes even close to the amount of space the S7 offers in the boot department. Maserati second best boot space of 17.7 cu ft, Porsche comes in third at 17.4 cu ft and Mercedes is last with only 15.3 cu ft of space, almost 9 cu ft short than the S7.

Exterior

9.7/10

"Ever since its debut in 2012, the A7's fastback shape has been a defining element. Sure, beauty is subjective, but most agree this is a fine-looking car from virtually any angle. Audi calls it a "sedan," but a rear power-operated hatch makes it a hatchback"-KBB

Dimensions and Weight

Even though it has been replaced by the completely new 2018 Audi A7. On the sides, it rides on 19-inch as standard but you have the option of choosing 20 and 21-inch wheels. The sloping roofline gives it a Sportback touch. The rear end is pretty simple and is laid out just like the Mercedes CLS but the quad exhaust gives it away as the high-performance model.

Design of the S7 turns a lot of heads. It looks impressive from whichever angle you look at and has gone through an overhaul from the 2016 model. It gets single line chrome grille; full LED headlights and the front end is pretty aggressive to see. 2017 Audi S7 is 196.7 inches in length and 75.2 inches in width. Ground Clearance is 4.4 inches which gives it a low stance and big presence. Wheelbase is 114.8 inches providing interior space to the occupants. The height of the S7 is 55 inches which complement with the aerodynamics of the car at high speeds.

The Audi S7 along with the Porsche Panamera 4S are the most handsome cars in the segment with both having unique body style. Porsche Panamera 4S is the longest at 198.8 inches and has a relatively good ground clearance at 5.6 inches. Maserati Ghibli is the widest at 76.6 inches, has the best wheelbase of 118 inches and also the tallest among the competition at 57.5 inches. Mercedes CLS, on the other hand, is the shortest at 194.5 inches and narrower than the competition at 74.1 inches but it has a reasonable ground clearance of 5.1 inches.

Exterior Features

  • Revamped LED headlight

  • Optional 21-inch wheels

  • Sportback Styling

Safety

The NHTSA and IIHS have not rated the S7 in the safety department but it does come with a lot of tech which can make it earn a five in the crash ratings.

The standard features are listed below:

  • Audi pre sense basic Forward Collision and Audi pre sense rear Rear Collision
  • Audi Side Assist Blind Spot Sensor
  • SIDEGUARD Curtain 1st And 2nd Row Airbags
  • Low Tire Pressure Warning

Competition

Mercedes Benz CLS 550 vs Audi S7

Mercedes CLS 550 is a lifestyle machine. It is both comfortable and is well made inside out. It has an extensive list of features and options but when compared to the S7 it falls short. The engine of the S7 is on a different with the drive being stupendous. It is loaded with features and standard safety tech. It has good of interior space with massive boot space. However, the CLS is a cheaper alternative to the S7 at $74,850 which makes a good buy at that price.

Porsche Panamera 4S vs Audi S7

Porsche is known to make reliable cars and Panamera 4S does justice to it. It is gorgeous to look at and a 4 door Porsche sedan was never even thought of. The interior quality is stunning with unlimited options to customize but also to be noted is that it’s almost $20,000 more expensive than S7. Also, when start ticking the Porsche configurator boxes, it can swell up the asking price. S7 has a lot of things which are standard, and you might not find in the Porsche which makes the former a formidable buy at that price.

Maserati Ghibli vs Audi S7

Maserati is a very practical sports saloon with classy looks. It has lightweight design and very practical. On the other hand, the S7 is an absolute bargain for that kind of money. It has a better mill under the hood and really good fuel figures in comparison to the Maserati. Also, the fact Maserati does face issues in the long-term reliability makes Audi an obvious choice.

Final Verdict

Audi S7 is the ultimate super saloon the money can buy. It’s super-fast and also luxurious. It is a perfect blend of both worlds. The interior could be bettered, and the engine can also be tweaked a little to become more economical and powerful. The standard kit offered is pretty long with a varying option list that makes this car a consideration if you’re in the market to buy a Sportback saloon.
