Detailed Review

S8 is the performance-oriented lineup from Audi, based on the flagship luxury sedan, the Audi A8. For 2017, the ride steps up the already enchanting performance a bit further. The exterior of the S8 Plus is more aggressive than the A8, mainly for distinction purpose.

2017 Audi S8 Plus is powered by a 4.0L Twin-Turbo V8 engine which is further paired with an 8-speed paddle-shifted Tiptronic transmission. The power is distributed via Audi's Quattro all-wheel-drive system. The robust V8 engine delivers 605 horsepower and 517 lb.-ft. of torque.

The S8 Plus Sedan challenges Flying Spur V8, AMG S63 4MATIC, and Panamera Turbo. Other than the trunk space and ground clearance, there isn't anything that S8 Sedan's rivals offer better. As such, the S8 Plus easily outshines the competitors with its powerful performance, elite interior, and a multitude of options.

The 2017 Audi S8 Sedan is offered in a single Plus trim. Nonetheless, we suggest opting for the Dynamic package for enhancing the track speed. The package further adds carbon fiber details, ceramic brakes, and a sport exhaust.

2017 Audi S8 Engine

8.2/10
The S8 Plus’s blistering performance makes it one of the ultimate sleepers sold today. In Comfort mode, it’ll cruise around like the big, cushy luxury sedan that it is. But in Dynamic mode, it hunkers down on its suspension and seemingly defies the laws of physics with keen steering, deft responses, and a willingness to rotate that belie its size and nearly two-and-a-half-ton curb weight.”-caranddriver

Engine and Transmission

The power dutieare carried out by a 4.0L turbocharged V8 engine which is paired with Audi’s 8-speed automatic transmission. The engine is rated for generating a whopping 605 horsepower and 517 lb.-ft. of torque. While the engine power is maximum amongst the class rival, torque offering bests only 487 lb.-ft. offered by the Bentley Flying Spur V8.

Bentley Flying Spur V8 also delivers the least-in-league engine power of 500 hp. Though Porsche Panamera Turbo offers an impressive 567 lb.-ft. of torque, Mercedes Benz AMG S63 4MATIC bests it. The ride offers an enormous torque of 664 lb.-ft.

Acceleration

The sedan boasts a lightning-quick acceleration. It is able to hit the 60 MPH mark after a mere 3.7 seconds as you apply pressure on the race pad. It covers a quarter-mile in an impressive 11.6 seconds. Comparatively, Spur V8 and AMG S63 4MATIC require 12.8 and 12.2 seconds, respectively for doing the same.

The S8 Sedan receives tough competition from the Porsche Panamera Turbo in terms of acceleration and power output. Nonetheless, the acceleration is smooth and available on all gears in the Audi S8 Plus.

Ride and Handling

In addition to the impressive 605 horsepower, the S8 Sedan boasts a superb combination of sport suspension and recalibrated steering. As such, driving the S8 Plus is enthralling and a mesmerizing experience. The sophisticated 5-link front suspension paired with the Quattro AWD allows for tackling curves with confidence.

If the road conditions get worse, worry not as the adaptive air suspension is there. It can be set in one of the three modes available, namely Comfort, Dynamic, and Automatic. Even though the Audi S8 is a big sedan, the ride quality, and handling is not so sophisticated. The steering is impressive, though the steering wheel might feel numb at times. Overall, the riding experience is rewarding.

Braking

The S8 Sedan not only boasts an agile acceleration but also a sprightly braking power. The ride flaunts a 15.7-inch front brake coupled with a smaller 14-inch rear brake. When decelerated fully and continually from 70 MPH, the Sedan comes to a complete halt at a distance of 156 feet. This is better than the 167 ft. required by the Flying Spur V8.

Mercedes Benz AMG S63 4MATIC also has a requirement of 156 feet of stopping distance at 70 MPH. Though Porsche Panamera Turbo has a better 153 feet requirement, this isn’t as impressive as that of the S8 Sedan. It is so because even after being 287 lbs. lighter and having bigger brakes, the ride is able to cut only 3 feet of stopping distance.

2017 Audi S8 Fuel Economy

Though powerful, the 4.0L Twin-Turbo V8 engine is throaty. The S8 Plus Sedan offers 15 mpg in cities and delivers 24 mpg on highways. The ride offers a combined fuel economy of 18 mpg, same as that offered by the AMG S63 4MATIC.

2017 Audi S8 Interior

“Step inside Audi’s 2017 S8's 5-passenger cabin and you might think you're in a private jet. Immediately noticeable is a gear selector reminiscent of an airplane's throttle lever. Seating and Comfort

The 2017 avatar of the Audi S8 Sedan has ample space for accommodating a total of 5 persons. The ride has 37.2 and 41.4 inches of headroom and legroom, respectively in the front. While the front headroom is least in the competition, legroom is second only to 41.6 inches boasted by the Flying Spur V8. Besides space, the seating is comfy and cozy.

For audio experience, the infotainment system comes with a 14-speaker BOSE surround-sound system. Though connectivity via Bluetooth and Wi-Fi hotspot is available, there is no USB port available. The system comes with support for CD/DVD and an iPod interface. Satellite and HD Radio are also available. For enhanced navigation, S8 Sedan comes with the Audi Connect.

Interior Features

As soon as you’re inside the cabin of the S8 Sedan, it becomes evident that it can’t get better. The gear selector is much like the throttle lever of an airplane. Other than that, the interior boasts:

  • 18-way power-operated and heated front seats
  • Driver and passenger lumbar support
  • Excellent leather and wood trims
  • Heated rear seats and heated steering wheel [Optional]
  • Keyfob keyless remote entry
  • Seats with massaging functions [Optional]

Cargo Capacity

One of the biggest downer for the 2017 S8 is the limited storage capacity. The luxury sedan offers a mere 14.2 cubic feet of storage space with rear seat up while the rear seat folding option is unavailable. Porsche Panamera Turbo offers the most cargo volume of 17.4 cubic feet with rear seat up.

Audi's flagship sedan is stately but mostly reserved, eschewing the fluidity of, say, the latest S-Class for a more conservative shape. Dimension and Weight

The S8 luxury sedan comes gifted with a precisely sculpted hood and Led headlights. The standard length has been set at 202.6 inches. The performance version of the S8 Sedan offers 21-inch wheels, distinguished tailpipes, rear diffuser, and side sills.

Audi S8 VS Porsche Panamera Turbo

A perfect balance of performance and luxury is what the Porsche Panamera Turbo has to offer. The ride with an initial price tag of $146,900 flaunts a 4.0L Twin-Turbocharged V8 engine. It is rated for producing 550 hp of power and 567 lb.-ft. of torque, both of which are impressive.

Like the Audi S8, the Porsche Panamera Turbo comes with an 8-speed automatic transmission for gear-shifting. The ride beats S8 Sedan in both, 0 to 60 MPH acceleration and covering a quarter-mile by a mere 0.1 seconds

2017 Audi S8 Final Verdict

2017 Audi S8 is one of the most comprehensive full-sized luxury sedans available. Its super performance just makes it better than all the previous iterations of the S8 Sedan. Its opening price is also the lowest available among its class rivals.

All in all, the S8 luxury sedan clearly outshines the competition. If you can absorb the issues like small trunk space and less ground clearance, then the ride is definitely one to add to your options list.
