A decade back, there was a sharp shift from sports cars to hot hatches as a matter of practicality and daily driving comfort. Seems like the people who started the “hot hatch” frenzy have all grown up and made enough money for themselves to upgrade to SUVs and since they crave great speed and power, there seems to be a new revolution of “performance SUVs” rolling out to quench their thirst. Audi, with it’s forever futuristic vision has been manufacturing performance tuned versions of its SUVs for the longest time and surely doesn’t want to miss out on all the action now.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

The refreshed 2022 Audi SQ7 which packs enough oomph and power for petrolheads to go gaga. The new Audi SQ7 is a continuation of the well praised 2021 version and there are no major changes as such. The SQ7 witnesses a revamp regularly owing to its popularity. This popularity is all because of the great power and amazing ride quality and handling of the SQ7 and the way it blends all the sportiness with the practicality, space and comfort of a full-sized SUV. At a price point of $86,500 the S-Q7 goes head to head with the BMW X5 M, Mercedes-Benz AMG GLC 63 S, and the Porsche Cayenne S.

2022 Audi SQ7 Features

The 2022 Audi SQ7 comes in two trims, namely the Premium Plus and the Prestige. Both come with a Quattro engine and the masterpiece Audi TipTronic transmission. The Premium Plus starts at $86,500 whereas the Prestige has an MSRP of $91,500, with optional packages to customise according to your needs available for both the trims.

Premium Plus

All-wheel steering

Sport Rear Differential

Audi adaptive air suspension, Sport

Contour/Ambient LED interior lighting package - multicolor

Bang & Olufsen 3D Premium sound system

Head-up display

Audi active cruise assist with Traffic Jam assist

Intersection assist

Carbon Vector inlays

Leather package - upper and lower elements

Which Trim should you buy?

At a starting price of $ 86,500; the SQ7 is already a splurge and throwing in an extra $5,000 to buy the Prestige Trim is surely the best decision considering that the Prestige has so much more to offer. The Premium Plus doesn’t live up to its name and is rather substandard for that pricing while the Prestige trim offers the perfect balance. Most importantly the Prestige trim comes equipped with a rear sport differential which does wonders for the handling and traction on offer.

Release date of the 2022 Audi SQ7

There has been no update whatsoever for the 2022 Audi SQ7. We can most likely expect it in the last 2 months of 2021.

2022 Audi SQ7 Engine and Performance

The 2022 Audi SQ7 inherits the same Quattro engine from its predecessor. The Audi Quattro engine that powers the SQ7 is a twin-turbo V8 which puts out a heart-thumping 500 horsepower and 568 lb-ft of torque. Such amazing performance makes the SQ7 an amazing sprinter on a straight line with a 0-60 mph acceleration time of 3.5 seconds. In fact, the SQ7 is powered by the same engine as the one in the RS-Q8 which is Audi’s reply to the Lamborghini Urus.

2022 Audi SQ7 SUV Engine Bay

When compared to the regular 2022 Audi Q7, there is a 160 horsepower surge, thanks to the two extra cylinders and a turbo. However, when compared to the 2021 SQ7, there is no change in the performance figures. The Tiptronic transmission in the SQ7 is an 8-speed automatic which calls for lightning-fast gear changes and instant power delivery.

It’s some tough competition between the four German biggies and there is surely no clear winner among them. The Mercedes GLC 63 AMG S is expected to be launched at a price tag of $82,000 and that makes for a competitive buy option when considering the Audi. Yet another thing to weigh in is the curb weight. The Mercedes with a curb weight of just 4,546 lbs is the lightest and hence matches up to the performance of the Audi and the BMW despite the lack of power. The BMW with a curb weight of 5,425 lbs is the heaviest among the three, but the Audi sits close on its wheels with a curb weight of 5,291 lbs. Since there is no update on the 2022 Porsche Cayenne S yet, the outdated 2021 model is surely no competition to the rest in terms of performance

With that amount of weight combined with an anti-roll stabilizing function and Air, suspension ensures that you’re comfortably fixated on the seat even at high speeds and sharp corners. The All-wheel drive with All Wheel Steering further adds to this stability and makes it a capable SUV in terms of some offroad duty too. The Audi gets Disc brakes with ventilated discs on all four wheels along with Brake Assist and Hill descent control which means that you can push the car to its limits and still get it to a standstill in a matter of seconds.

2022 Audi SQ7 Fuel Economy

With great power comes poor fuel economy, of course! The Twin Turbo V8 might definitely be making a lot of horsepowers but the horses definitely need a whole lot of fuel to keep them going. EPA Official figures state that the 2022 Audi SQ7 gives out a combined fuel economy of 17 mpg. On city roads, this figure comes down to 15 mpg and on highways, it is a decent 21 mpg. The fuel tank can house a good capacity of 22.5 gallons of gasoline which means a single full tank of gas can cover a trip of approximately 380 miles, so you definitely wouldn’t be stopping for regular fill-ups while on a road trip with your friends and family.

Despite the Audi giving out terrible fuel economy numbers, it still puts up a good show against its immediate competitors. With a 17.4 gallon tank, it seems like the Mercedes GLC 63 AMG S has been able to shed all the weight by just diminishing its fuel tank. The BMW X5 M has some rather disappointing fuel efficiency numbers and is surely no competition for the Audi. The Porsche is the clear winner but the better fuel efficiency numbers are just a compromise for the performance and if you’re buying a performance car, you’ll surely not be looking at the fuel numbers.

2022 Audi SQ7 Interior

The 2022 Audi SQ7 being a carryover model doesn’t witness any kind of cabin changes from the previous model. There’s a lot going on inside the SQ7 with three fully digital LCD screens for the speedometer, Infotainment system, and Climate control respectively. You don’t even need to get inside the car to feel comfortable. Just a view of the heavily bolstered, Diamond cut stitched leather seats is enough to soothe your spine. The headrests of the front row are integrated into the seats for the sport’s appeal. The front seats come with an 8-way adjustable power function along with 4 more settings for lumbar support.

2022 Audi SQ7 SUV Front Row Seats

The Premium Plus trim only gets heated front seats whereas the Prestige trim gets a heating function for both rows as well as a cooling function for the front row. The steering wheel too gets a heating function as standard. The dash is lined with leather treatment and the black shade strikes a good contrast with the red color of the seats. The Prestige trim of the SQ7 takes the luxe factor a notch higher by employing the Extended Leather Package which means the top of the dash, the door armrests, the instrument panel, and the center console will all be wrapped up in premium leather.

There’s also the High Gloss Gray Oak inlays which is an optional free extra for both trims, which adds a glossy oak wood texture to the door handles and the underlines of the dash. There’s an ambient lighting feature with the Prestige trim getting Contour ambient lighting. The air conditioning vents extend in a single line throughout the dash in typical Audi styling language and magically disappear from the visual bulk. There are carbon inserts on the door handles and around the center console which Audi likes to call the “Carbon Vector Inlay”. The seats have “S” embossing and there’s Quattro badging on the dash, in case you forget what lies at the heart of this beast. The Panoramic sunroof adds to the ambiance by bringing in more light and air.

Second Row (Head/shoulder/legroom)

Third Row (Head/shoulder/legroom)

Cargo Capacity

The Audi surely manages to grab the cherry on top by managing to match the same performance numbers while still having a usable third row. The BMW X5 M is supposed to be equally roomy as the Audi. With the second and third row of the SQ7 folded you can fit a full-size piano for sure and still have space for more! Some of the key interior features include:

  • Power tilt and telescopic adjustable steering column with memory
  • Auto-dimming interior rearview mirror with digital compass and Integrated Toll Module
  • Illuminated, aluminum door sills with S badging
  • Bang & Olufsen 3D Premium Sound System
  • Illuminated Locking Glove Box
  • Proximity Key For Doors And Push Button Start

How intuitive is the Audi SQ7’s infotainment unit?

The Audi SQ7 comes with the Virtual Cockpit infotainment system which is a 12.3 inch TFT screen for all your entertainment needs and vehicle monitoring and information systems. You can select from a load of drive modes namely ‘Offroad, Allroad, Comfort, Auto and Dynamic’. The infotainment system supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

2022 Audi SQ7 SUV Infotainment System

There’s another 12.3 inch TFT for climate control which is four-zone automatic climate control. The dash also comes equipped with a wireless charger. The Prestige trim has an additional heads-up display. The Audi Virtual Cockpit is a breeze to use and the screens are huge enough to be viewed from even a few meters away. A few features of the infotainment system in the 2022 Audi SQ7 are:

  • MMI Navigation plus with MMI touch response
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity
  • Audi side assist with Rear cross traffic assist and Vehicle exit warning
  • Top view camera system with Virtual 360 view
  • 19 Speakers
  • 730w regular amplifier
  • Audi real-time traffic display

2022 Audi SQ7 Exterior

The 2022 Audi SQ7 keeps up with Audi’s modern styling language and is a treat to the eyes. The front, top, and back are neatly done with minimal design and clean edges. It is only when you move to the side that you get to witness the sporty pedigree of the car, complete with the 21-inch five-spoke V-shaped alloys done tastefully in a silver finish with red brake calipers. Then there are the aggressive linings running throughout the lengths of the side which lend character to the car.

Chrome has been used very tastefully along with the windows, door blades and the roof rails, and also the front grille and the rear trunk opener section. You get the liberty to opt for the $1,300 Black Optic Package and all of the chrome elements disappear and pave way for a Piano Black finish which even extends to the rearview mirrors. This package surely differentiates the SQ7 as a performance SUV. Another important part of this package is the 21-inch 10 spoke star design which is a masterpiece of its own.

On the front come to the Matrix LED headlights with projector beam Led daytime running headlamps. The taillights are LED units too with unique dynamic indicators that swoop from the inside to the outside. The headlights and the massive chrome grille come together to express an aggressive SUV look. The taillamps are definitely inspired by the older generations of the Q7 and hence one can never go wrong while identifying this car.

Curb Weight

Ground Clearance

With a ground clearance of 9 inches, the SQ7 also makes for a good offroader. The Mercedes is the most compact among the lot but the Audi takes all the good marks for being the only one with the third row of seats. The Mercedes has very poor height but still manages to offer an equal amount of headroom which indicates that you sit higher in the Audi and the BMW, which is good in terms of being at the receiving end of the SUV feel. The Porsche is taller and wider but the swooping roofline leads to poor headroom in the rear. Some of the key exterior features are:

  • Quad exhaust tailpipes
  • Tailgate roof spoiler
  • 285/40 R21 all-season tires
  • Metal-Look bodyside insert and body-colored wheel well trim
  • LED Brakelights
  • Front And Rear Fog Lamps

2022 Audi SQ7 Safety

The 2022 Audi SQ7 is high on safety with a plethora of features like Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Roll Stability Control (RSC), ABS, Traction Control, Dual Stage airbags, Blind spot assist, and Airbag occupancy sensor to name a few. All of this and the sturdy aluminum build of the Audi stand as a promising place to put yourself into.

Apart from all the below features, Audi has also provided a limited period subscription of Audi connect CARE assistance and security services which allows you to send an SOS call from the infotainment system in case of an emergency. The Cruise Control is a smart one with front object detection which directs the car to slow down or come to a halt in case something obstructs the route. Some of the key safety features are:

  • Low Tire Pressure Warning
  • Adaptive cruise assist with Traffic Jam assist
  • Rear-passenger side airbags
  • Audi side assist with Rear cross traffic assist and Vehicle exit warning
  • An aerial View camera system
  • Low tire pressure warning
  • Outboard front lap And shoulder Safety Belts with three-point height adjustment

2022 Audi SQ7 Competition

2022 Audi SQ7 vs. 2022 BMW X5 M

The BMW X5 with the M badge is surely the most coveted performance SUV but Audi has surely picked up pace in making exceptional performance-tuned cars. While performance between both the cars is blisteringly identical, the BMW X5 M will set you back by another $20,000, which is a big difference considering the only thing that would justify that price tag is the fun-to-drive element of an M badged BMW.

2022 BMW X5 M Front Angle View

Yes the BMW might be more fun to drive but the Audi SQ7 compensates for that by being practical in the sense of space and good ground clearance. Even in sense of styling, the recently enlarged kidney-grilles of the modern string of BMWs is not really a favorite sight for many and the Audi gallops ahead with its subtle aggressive looks.

2022 Audi SQ7 vs. 2022 Mercedes GLC 63 AMG S

Again here, the performance figures match up almost perfectly. Definitely, the Mercedes-Benz size and lesser curb weight make it a nimble, agile handler that can glide through corners with ease. The Audi might be practical but AMGs are always meant to go around a corner with the tail spinning out and the tires engulfing itself in a cloud of smoke.

2022 Mercedes GLC 63 AMG S Front Angle View

At similar price points, the whole decision comes down to whether you want a smaller, lively Mercedes or the practical, roomy Audi. If stopping for regular fuel fill-ups is not your thing, you are definitely better off with the Audi SQ7.

2022 Audi S-Q7 vs. the 2021 Porsche Cayenne S

The 2021 Porsche Cayenne S is definitely outdated to match the performance levels of the Audi S-Q7. It's only more fuel-efficient and way more stylish to look at, but the design language of the Porsche is an acquired taste and there are many who don’t like it.

2021 Porsche Cayenne S Front Angle View

If performance numbers don’t mean much to you, then the Porsche can still be a good buy as the Cayenne S is very fun to drive a car.

2022 Audi SQ7 Final Verdict

The new Audi SQ7 is definitely a wholesome performance SUV and definitely seems to be the perfect blend of fine engine tuning and SUV practicality. There is no room for complaint at all as there is everything one can desire for. The aesthetic appeal of the car is irresistible and the interiors are straight out of the future. There has been no compromise and you get value for each penny that is spent on the car.

This car does literally live up to all expectations. At the price point at which this car sits, one surely has to be doing extremely well to get one. If you’re one of them then this car will be an eye-candy for all the people you interact with, be it the executives who have come over for an official meeting, or your friends from your teenage days who still show up for fun times, or your family who will always be ready to hop into the seats of this one for a good family outing.
