What we recommend

For everyday usability, the 2017 Audi TT Convertible is studded with all the necessary features and offers more than enough at this price range.

2017 Audi TT Engine

8.0/10
"The Audi TT is one of those cars that you look forward to driving every day. Power delivery is smooth and linear and the ride quality deftly balances performance and comfort. With all-wheel drive standard, it's a delight to unleash on a tight twisting mountain road, encouraging drivers to push harder with each turn." - Edmunds

Engine and Transmission

The 2017 Audi TT Convertible is powered by the 2-liter turbocharged inline-4 engine that generates a horsepower of 220 at 4500 to 6200 rpm and torque of 258-pound-feet at 1600 to 4400 rpm. It has the standard 6-speed S-Tronic automatic transmission which puts up a smooth and quick gear shifting. The 2017 Audi TT Convertible also has the latest Haldex clutch-pack system that sends increased power to the rear wheels.

Torque 258 lb.-ft  @ 1600 rpm 258 lb.-ft @ 1450 rpm 273 lb.-ft @ 1300 rpm 280 lb.-ft @ 1950 rpm

The 2017 Audi TT Convertible lags behind in terms of engine offered as it has the least powerful compared to its competitions. The Porsche 718 Boxster Roadster has the best performing engine among the four with a massive horsepower of 300 at 6500 rpm and torque of 280 pound-feet at 1950 rpm. The BMW has a horsepower of 248 and a similar torque of 258 as the Audi. The Mercedes in spite of its 9-speed automatic transmission comes next to the BMW in terms of horsepower yet it exceeds in torque.

Acceleration

In spite of not being a typical sports car, the 2017 Audi TT Convertible has an impressive acceleration rate, courtesy of its swift changing 6 speed automatic transmissions and all-wheel drive which works together with the turbocharged engine to attain an acceleration of 0 to 60 mph in just 5.3 seconds and covers a quarter mile in 13.7 seconds.

Engine 2.0L 2.0L 2.0L 2.0L
Emission (Tons/yr of CO2 Emissions @ 15K mi/year) 6.8 6.6 7.1 7.3

Quite surprisingly, in spite of having a comparatively less powerful engine, the 2017 Audi TT Convertible has the second faster initial acceleration, just after the Porsche 718 Boxster which tops the table in reaching from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.9 seconds. It is followed by the BMW and then the Mercedes. In terms of a quarter mile as well, the 2017 Audi TT Convertible doesn’t fail to maintain the second position right behind the Porsche that covers the quarter-mile distance in a whopping 12 seconds. The BMW and the Mercedes share an equal timing of 14.6 seconds. The Porsche, however, suffers as the most emitting car whereas the BMW has the least amount of emission.

Handling and Steering

Audi cars have always had brilliant handling and excellent suspension system and the 2017 Audi TT Convertible is no different. It has a lighter feel to it making it easier for the driver to take advantage of its immaculate handling capabilities. It comes with a progressive steering system providing assistance in quick changes in direction and summing up to a stable ride on the highway and on mountainous turnings.

Braking

The 2017 Audi TT Convertible has 12.3 inched front braking discs and 11.8 rear braking discs that bring the car at halt from 60 to 0 mph in 105 feet.

Curb Weight (lbs.) 3373 3680 3957 2944
60-0 MPH (ft.) 105 106 109 99.8

The braking pattern can be summarized to be directly proportional to the curb weight which plays an important factor in deceleration. The Porsche being the lightest and sharing the largest front brake discs with the Mercedes, has the best braking statistics, covering only a mere 99.8 feet in coming down from 60 to 0 mph. as the weight increases, so does the distance in case of the BMW with a braking distance of 106 feet and the Mercedes with 109 feet. The 2017 Audi TT Convertible secures the second position with 105 feet.

2017 Audi TT Fuel Economy

7.7/10

Featuring only the automatic transmission, the 2017 Audi TT Convertible doesn’t have much choice to alter the fuel efficiency although, it does have a decent fuel economy of 23 mpg in the cities, 30 mpg in the highways and a combined rate of 26 mpg, which is fair for an everyday use car.

Model Audi TT Convertible BMW 230i Convertible Mercedes Benz C 300 4MATIC Cabriolet Porsche 718 Boxster Roadster
MPG (city) 23 23 22 21
MPG (highway) 30 34 29 28
MPG (combined) 26 27 25 24

Topping the charts in the fuel economy is the BMW 230i Convertible with the highest fuel economy of 34 mpg in the highway, 27 mpg combined and shares an equal economy rate with the 2017 Audi TT Convertible at 23 mpg in the cities. The Audi also does better than the Mercedes and the Porsche in cities, highways and combined which gives it a great advantage. The Porsche due to its strong engine suffers from the least efficient fuel economy.

2017 Audi TT Interior

8.0/10
"If you can tear your eyes away from the Virtual Cockpit, you'll see that the rest of the 2017 TT cabin is just as impressive. The air vents, for example, are simple and elegant vents, climate readouts built into the vent dials, and a twist of the housing adjusts temperature, seat heat and more. - Kelley Blue Book "

Seating and comfort

Minimalism was the idea behind the design of the TT's interior. Audi has ditched a central infotainment screen and shifted all functions to a gorgeous virtual cockpit in the instrument cluster. The climate control display is also very smartly integrated within the vents itself and you turn the housings of the vents to change temperature or air flow - rather cool!

The buttons have been kept minimal too and the virtual cockpit is controlled via a touchpad and a rotary knob on the center console. The virtual cockpit can also be controlled via steering mounted controls. The fit and finish of the cabin is really great and the display in the instrument cluster is really space age.

The 2017 Audi TT Convertible is a short and compact 2 passenger car with a decent interior space for the driver and the second passenger.

Second (Head/Shoulder/Leg) (In.) 33.8/47.9/28.9 37.0/42.2/31.8 35.6/51.7/32.0 N/A

The 2017 Audi TT Convertible and the Porsche have a passenger capacity of two while the BMW and the Mercedes share a 4-passenger capacity statistic. Being the shortest among the lot, the 2017 Audi TT Convertible suffers in terms of front seat headroom, although it shares an almost equal legroom with the other three. The BMW has the most spacious headroom among the four. In case of rear passenger space, the BMW beats the Mercedes too.

Interior Features

  • Power driver and passenger seat
  • Ambient interior lighting
  • Tilt and telescopic electronic steering wheel
  • Heated front seats

Infotainment

The 2017 Audi TT Convertible comes with the standard MMI infotainment system that is easy to use and has an attractive setup as well. It has a 9 speaker well-surrounded sound system that maintains the audio at a comfortable level. The knob controls located on the central console are very user-friendly.

  • Bluetooth audio and phone
  • Voice command
  • Auxiliary audio input
  • Real-time traffic and weather information

Cargo

Being a two passenger car, the 2017 Audi TT Convertible has a reasonable cargo space.

Model Audi TT Convertible BMW 230i Convertible Mercedes Benz C 300 4MATIC Cabriolet Porsche 728 Boxster Roadster
Cargo Volume (ft.3) 7.5 11.8 8.8 9.7

Leading the statistics with a cargo space of 11.8 cubic feet, the BMW accommodates the most luggage; followed by the Porsche with 9.7 cubic feet and the Mercedes with 8.8 cubic feet of trunk space. The 2017 Audi TT Convertible suffers in this department than its competitions.

2017 Audi TT Exterior

8.5/10
"The only vestiges of the original Audi TT's upside-down bathtub styling on the 2017 Audi TT are the prominently rounded wheel arches and middle-positioned exhaust outlets. But this is still a distinctive car. - Kelley Blue Book"

You could call the TT a shrunk R8 because it carries over the classic proportions of the R8, only a tad smaller. It looks sharp and the LED headlamps add to its sleekness. The anti-roll bars behind the seats add a stylistic element to the design and the 19-inch rims add some more zing to the side profile. The rear is simple yet sporty with really sleek LED taillamps. However, one could complain of the rather simplistic bumper design. In that case, you might consider the TTS which comes with more aggressive styling. The standard TT still looks like a true convertible sports car with classic proportions.

Dimensions and Weight

The 2017 Audi TT Convertible is not a typical race car although it follows the dimensional traits of a sports car to a great extent.

Model Audi TT Convertible BMW 230i Convertible Mercedes Benz C 300 4MATIC Cabriolet Porsche 718 Boxster Roadster
Curb weight (lbs.) 3373 3680 3957 2944

Track width (in) F/R 61.9/61.1 59.9/61.3 61.6/60.8 59.6/60.3

The Mercedes Benz boasts a heavy curb weight, a lengthy skeleton and also the largest wheelbase in comparison to its competitions. The Porsche is the lightest, has the least ground clearance and shortest in height and wheelbase length. The 2017 Audi TT Convertible is very short lengthwise and only a point ahead of Porsche in terms of ground clearance.
