The Audi TT is a small luxury car that offers sporty performance, agile handling, and an engaging driving experience. Previously, it had some controversial looks, but it is not the case anymore. For 2020, it is a part of the same generation that was introduced in 2016 and gets only minor changes, but is bolder, more elegant, and much better looking than it was.

The convertible is found only in one form with a base price of $49,000, a turbocharged engine, and an AWD drivetrain. The engine is a 2.0L Turbocharged Inline-4 engine that is capable of putting out 220 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. For 2020, the convertible will again go against its usual rivals such as the BMW Z4, Porsche 718 Boxster, and Mercedes-Benz SLC 300

2020 Audi TT Convertible Engine and Performance

7.0/10

Under the hood of the 2020 Audi TT Convertible, you’ll find a 2.0L Turbocharged Inline-4 engine, which is rated at 220 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. This engine is paired to a 7-speed dual-clutch S Tronic transmission with paddle shifters, and the power is sent to all four wheels via the evergreen Quattro AWD drivetrain. The TT is dimensionally smaller than most of its competitors, hence this engine proves to be powerful and punchy, regardless of where you take it. The TT Convertible takes 5.2 seconds to go from 0 to 60 mph, and it completes a quarter-mile in just over 13 seconds. The top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph, which is found in all of its rivals as well.

The 718 Boxster is by far the most expensive convertible in this segment. However, it is also the most powerful and the fastest as well. priced at $12,000 more than the TT Convertible, the Porsche takes only 4.6 seconds to reach 60 mph and covers a quarter-mile in 12.3 seconds. Another noteworthy mention here would be the drivetrain. The TT is the only convertible that offers AWD as standard, whereas all other convertibles up against the TT offer RWD as standard.

How well does the 2020 Audi TT Convertible handle?

Handling is one of the Audi TT’s strong suits. Due to its small compact body and a sufficiently powerful engine, it achieves impressive handling capabilities. Cornering is much easier because of its dimensions, and even the steering is light weighted yet precise. Body roll is there, but it does not bother the occupants. The strut-type front suspension and multi-like type rear suspension do a great job of providing a nice and comfortable ride for the passengers. The S Line Competition package adds a sport suspension which has a stiffer setup for those who wish to opt for performance instead of comfort.

Braking Performance

The brakes on the TT are the largest they have ever been. With big brakes come big responsibilities, and boy do they do their duties well. Regardless of where you take the TT, i.e., in cities, highways, or even the tracks, we are certain that the brakes won’t let you down. The pedal has a good feel to it. It is extremely precise, and the wheels respond to the action instantly. The front brake rotors are 12.3 inches, while the rear brake rotors are 11.8 inches in size. These might not be the biggest brakes in the segment, but the TT Convertible is neither the biggest nor the heaviest in the segment. They help the TT to stop at an admirable distance of just 106 feet while going from 60 to 0 mph.

Among its rivals, all the convertibles are fitted with the same sized rear brake rotors. The 718 Boxster comes with the biggest front brake rotor of 13.0 inches in size. It is, however, over 300 pounds lighter than the TT Convertible, which gives it an advantage while braking. Having said so, the TT is the heaviest in the segment along with the Mercedes and still manages to stop at a better distance than all of its competitors.

2020 Audi TT Convertible Fuel Economy

5.0/10

The TT Convertible offers decent mileage for a sport luxury convertible, and that too with an AWD setup, unlike other cars which offer RWD as standard. It is rated at 23 MPG for the cities, 31 MPG for the highways, which gives it a combined fuel economy of 26 MPG. However, its 14.5-gallon fuel tank is the smallest in the segment which impacts its range. With a full tank, you’ll be able to roam around for 377 miles (combined).

Among the TT Convertible’s rivals, the Z4 and the SLC 300 provide the best fuel economy in the segment. Both are rated at 27 MPG (combined). However, the Merc is fitted with the largest fuel tank, which allows it to attain a range better than others. With a full tank, you’ll be able to travel for 429.3 miles (combined). On the other hand, the Z4 is fitted with the smallest fuel tank and hence falls behind the TT in terms of range as well.

2020 Audi TT Convertible Interior

6.0/10

The 2020 Audi TT Convertible has an upscale interior, which is seen in all Audi cars. However, its convertible setup takes up the space behind the front row of seats and hence it has an occupancy of only two passengers. This also eats up a lot of cargo space in the trunk, and the TT is left with almost no space to store luggage. The dashboard and center console have a nice simplistic design, which is wrapped in soft leather and features three circular air vents and several buttons and knobs to manipulate climate control and infotainment functions.

Aluminum inserts are seen all over the interior, and especially on the center console. The steering wheel is a leather-wrapped sport steering wheel that is fitted with paddle shifters. The seats are covered in Alcantara leather upholstery and are 8-way power-adjustable with heated functionality as standard. The seats offer decent comfort but not as much as its rivals do. With just one row of seats, there’s a good amount of space in terms of headroom and legroom, and the driver has good exterior visibility at all times.

All of the TT Convertible’s rivals have an occupancy of 2 passengers. Among those, the TT offers the least interior space for passenger seating as well as cargo space in its trunk. It is safe to say that the TT performs poorly in this category. Both the Z4 and SLC 300 provide excellent interior space, but since the Merc provides slightly better trunk space, it is the winner for this category. It can hold up to 10.1 cubic feet of luggage. Some key highlights of the interior are:

  • Automatic air conditioning
  • Alcantara leather upholstery
  • Heated front sport bucket seats
  • Leather-wrapped sport steering wheel with paddle shifters
  • Keyless entry
  • Cruise control

What’s there to keep you entertained?

The 2020 Audi TT Convertible is fitted with the latest MMI infotainment system along with the latest features and gizmos. This unit is paired with a 9-speaker audio system, voice-activated Bluetooth, HD radio, USB ports, etc. If you wish to opt for more technological advancements, then look into the Technology package which costs an additional $2,800. It includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, Audi Connect online services, MMI navigation system, a 12-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system, Audi virtual cockpit, etc. Some key infotainment features are:

  • SiriusXM and HD radio
  • MMI touch with handwriting recognition
  • CD player, MP3 player
  • USB ports
  • 2 SD card slots
  • Voice activation

2020 Audi TT Convertible Exterior

8.0/10

The Audi TT had some controversial looks before, but it is not the same now. It has some sharp-looking elements and is an attractive-looking compact car. Starting with the front end, it comprises a low trapezoidal grille with the four rings of Audi placed above it. The sleek and mean-looking two-way internally split automatic projector-beam daytime running LED headlights steal the show when it comes to the front fascia. Below them are big air damps and fog light housing. To finish off, there’s a simple and slightly sloping hood.

From the side, the TT looks like a compressed R8. It sits on 18-inch 5-Double-Spoke wheels and has a ground clearance of 4.2 inches. Subtle body lines run from the front end to the rear end of the car. It also features body-colored power side-view mirrors. The rear end of the 2020 Audi TT Convertible comprises LED taillights, air vents, circular dual exhaust outlets, and a power spoiler.

The 718 Boxster has the lowest ground clearance of just 3.6 inches, whereas the Z4 has the highest of 5.1 inches. When comparing the curb weight, both Mercedes and Audi stand at the very top as the heaviest options at 3,384 lbs. Some of the key exterior features are:

  • Automatic projector-beam daytime running LED headlights
  • LED brake lights
  • Front and rear fog lamps
  • Power spoiler
  • 18-inch 5-Double-Spoke wheels
  • Body-colored heated power side-view mirrors

2020 Audi TT Convertible Safety

7.0/10

Safety is every buyer’s concern whenever he/she is buying a convertible. With this growing concern, the authorities have made their criteria stricter, and manufacturers are now offering their cars with more and more standard safety and driver-assist features. As far as crash-test worthiness goes, neither the NHSTA nor the IIHS has tested the 2020 Audi TT. Having said that, the TT is equipped with plenty of standard safety features. These include:

  • Electronic Stability Control
  • Driveline Traction Control
  • Tire pressure monitoring system
  • Remote Anti-Theft alarm system
  • Automatic emergency braking
  • Electromechanical brake assist
  • Engine immobilizer

2020 Audi TT Convertible Competition

6.0/10

2020 Audi TT Convertible vs 2020 BMW Z4

The 2020 BMW Z4 is comparatively newer to the Audi TT. Its new generation was launched in 2019. The Z4 is a well-known entity in this segment. It is powered by a similar-sized engine but offers better power figures than the TT. When it comes to the interior, the Bimmer has the upper hand. Especially with its infotainment unit, which is arguably the best setup in the segment. As both are almost identically priced, it comes down to personal choice. We feel that the TT offers a better behind-the-wheel experience and hence our choice leans more towards it. However, the Z4 is not a bad substitute either.

2020 Audi TT Convertible vs 2020 Porsche 718 Boxster

The 2020 Porsche 718 Boxster is the most extravagant among all the convertibles in this segment. It is the most expensive, the most powerful, and also the fastest. It also offers a premium and high-quality interior, which is much more comfortable and spacious than the Audi. Where it lags is fuel economy; it is the least fuel-efficient in its class. If you have the spending capacity to buy the Porsche, then it is an excellent choice, however, the TT is a more practical, composed, and economical option.

2020 Audi TT Convertible vs 2020 Mercedes-Benz SLC 300

When it comes to the German giants, Mercedes-Benz has always been the epitome of class and performance. When the SLC 300 is taken up against the Audi TT, you’ll find that they are at par on most occasions. Both are similarly priced, with similar engine and power figures, similar mileage, and a similar amount of features in the interior. However, the Merc is slightly better than the Audi in every aspect. Hence it easily becomes the preferred choice between the two. The TT is a versatile package as well, but the Merc is simply better.

2020 Audi TT Convertible Final Verdict

The Audi TT has come a long way, and it is a fun little sports car. For 2020, the convertible is a well-put-together piece of work and offers immaculate handling experience with its turbocharged engine and AWD drivetrain. Decent fuel economy, decent interior, and some more points go in its favor. With its capacity of only two seats, it can’t qualify as a family car, however, if you’re willing to purchase a compact and fun-to-drive convertible, then the 2020 Audi TT Convertible is the car to go for.
