2017 Audi TT Coupe Complete In-depth Review & Buying Guide

Volkswagen as a giant extends its MQB platform to wide range of cars under its umbrella. It is designed so thoughtfully, that it can take a longitudinal and as well as transversely mounted engine and still can be FWD, RWD or AWD. Such a dynamic platform that it extends to a sportscar as well. The Audi TT hence is that little baby sister to R8 crisply styled and almost retaining the proportions of the last gen.

Expert Review

CARHP Editorial March 8, 2019

Audi TT is not “handsomely” powered but we’d say a “moderately” powered with 2 L turbocharged inline-4 producing 220 horses and a 258 pound feet. The next in the TT range with 292 hp is the TTS, where the usual TT does a 60 in 5.3 seconds, the latter does it in 4.6 seconds. The upcoming TT RS is a long due for next year which will have a turbocharged 5 pot motor.

This luxury sportscar coupe has M4 as its closest rival. Its natural rival the Z4 is still under development and will probably hit the shores in 2019. And Americana is muscling here with a tad more powerful Cadillac ATS.

2017 Audi TT Coupe Engine

“There's quite the sensory experience from the driver's seat, as well as respectable performance numbers.” –The Car Connection

Engine and Transmission

With a 2L 4 pot engine, Audi TT at 220 horsepower almost has the same power as a Golf GTI which costs $15,000 less. It is indeed a little underpowered for the entry level luxury coupe segment. All what helps the TT, is the very satisfying S-tronic dual clutch automatic gearbox and its manuals are a little harder to fetch. And the second thing that helps it the most is its light weight-ed ness.

BMW 4 series is a far sprightly-feeling and dynamic car than Audi. With BMWs being designed to always drive like a precise machinery, they make a very fun-to-drive vehicles even when they seem moderately powered on paper. Cadillac here is that fat cat with a lot of paw-digging and prancing power. The 295 pounds foot producing 2.5 L motor is a considerably better performer than both the Germans here.

Where acceleration times might be a surprising number and that’s because of the Audi TT’s all-wheel drive Quattro system which comes as standard in US market. This in conjunction with Haldex clutch pack system which sends most of the power to the rear wheels. The weight cut over the last gen and extensive usage of aluminium bits has further reduced the effort it takes to push the car to 60.

Acceleration when compared to BMW and the Cadillac, Audi excels with a 5.2 second 0 to 60 and a quarter mile at 13.9 seconds which is considerable when the times are compared. Cadillac takes the most time to do its acceleration chores.

Audi TT already has a good levels of grip on offer when in corners with its Quattro system on offer. But when we talk about its controllability by the virtue of its brakes, TT disappoints. The brakes feel laggy and not-so-responsive for a sports car. 70 to zero takes TT 151 feet which is the best in the competition. But lack of feedback and preciseness makes Audi feels very heavy in comparison. We aren’t saying brakes are bad, the feel is.

Yes! Audi TT impress in with the 60-0 distance. It stops way before 4 series or Cadillac ATS does

2017 Audi TT Coupe Fuel Economy

Audi TT puts out a decent mileage of 26 mpg combined and on the highway it can stretch its legs up to 30 mpg which is decent efficiency for a car that has a Quattro system and the all-important sports car genes.

BMW impresses here being the most fuel efficient be it city scapes or on the long stretching highways it stays just a notch over its German rival, the TT. Cadillac with a little higher displacement is a higher on the fuel consumption.

2017 Audi TT Coupe Interior

“For two, the TT and TTS make a lot of sense inside, with comfortable seats, well-laid-out controls, and decent ride comfort; go elsewhere if the small trunk and minuscule back seat get to you.”

Seating and Comfort

TT's interior styling is spotless and basic, and its five star materials make an upscale situation. The lodge is tranquil, as well, even in the convertible model with the best down. Especially amazing is the new Virtual Cockpit framework that puts the sight and sound screen straightforwardly behind the directing wheel rather than on the dashboard. The screen is sharp and simple for the driver to see. The atmosphere controls are contained inside the air vents, making them simple to alter. The front seats are unbelievably movable and agreeable, however the confined rearward sitting arrangements should just be utilized for capacity. Payload space is extraordinary for the car and the roadster.

The rear seat configurations of all these cars are a laughably sized for adults. With such a little legroom it can get almost impossible to fit in any of these. But still here the BMW is the one with the most spacious be it rear or the front seats.

Cargo volume

Audi TT is just to keep one or even two essential bags in the boot and then you head for the drive. Because Audi TT is about the drive and not it-can-take-all-that-in-the-boot car. A 12 cu.ft of cargo space is comparable to certain hatchbacks infact.

Cadillac with that sharp styling and boot to match, doesn’t have much to store with 10.4 cu.ft. The best one here is BMW 4 series coupe with a lot bigger boot at 15.7 cu.ft.

2017 Audi TT Coupe Exterior

“The 2017 Audi TT has evolved conservatively inside, but the interior incorporates a radical new racing-inspired look and advanced interface.” –The Car Connection

Engine and Transmission

The TT carries its design signature from the R8 supercar, obtaining a sizeable inspiration from its mid-engine cousin. The design lately, has been going sharper over years and now with the new matrix headlamps it looks like the computer aged monster is out on a hunt.

The overall car is short wheelbase that helps it dynamically be very precise but it gives the TT very purposeful looking stance. The surfaces are now edgier than round, the overhangs tuck in beautifully making it look neat. The tailamps carry over the matrix headlamp theme and has slashes of red highlights.

BMW 4 series and Cadillac ATS are comparatively bigger cars than TT. BMW feels more flamboyant after the recent design update and ATS on the other hand is edged and creased well. Audi TT with its tout and tight sportscar proportion feels very purpose build.

2017 Audi TT Coupe Safety

Audi has host of safety equipment with no less than 6 airbags and the new improved body frame is great in shock absortion.

  • Driver and front passenger dual-stage airbags, front thorax side airbags, knee airbags, and Sideguard® head curtain airbags
  • Front passenger occupant detection for airbag
  • Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children (LATCH) in rear seats
  • ESC (Electronic Stability Control) with secondary collision brake assist
  • Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) with Electronic Brake-pressure Distribution (EBD)
  • Tire-pressure monitoring system
  • Anti-theft alarm system with immobilizer

2017 Audi TT Coupe Competition

BMW 4 series coupe

BMW comes pretty close to hatching the perfect blend of coupe and its 3-series sedan elements to form a car that is properly fun to drive. Dynamics was always one of the strong points for BMW and the way it drives is very engaging. With enough space on offer 4 series make a good buy. And if you want a coupe that almost comes close to being go-kart like. TT is the thing to head for.

Cadillac ATS

Cadillac when compare to 4 series and TT is a holistically classier luxury car that tries to be sporty. So if we tip the scale: TT is the most sport intended, ATS is mostly classic luxury and 4 series just balances between these two. Go for Cadillac if you like all that sharp edgy styling, torquey engine and the comfort it offers.

2017 Audi TT Coupe Final Verdict

Audi TT is hell of a driver with its Go-kart like dimensions and dynamics from the Quattro all-wheel-drive system. 220 horses is not what you expect out of hot brewing entry level sportscar from Audi but it is fun enough. The phenomenal character of TT is its controllability and the feeling of nothing can go wrong with it in a fast corner. It’s like the car has always got your back. TT with its new R8 inspired design would actually make you mistake it for an R8. Enough reasons for you to go for one.
