The Audi TT has been a benchmark for its iconic style in the history of compact coupes. The Audi TT Roadster is a variation of the regular TT platform. It is built on the basic MQB platform which it shares with many including the Audi A3. Being in the last phase of the current generation and receiving some upgrades for 2021, the 2022 Audi TT Roadster is mostly carried over from the previous model year. It does not stand out in terms of practicality but tries to maintain the pricing factor reasonable with an MSRP of $53,900. Nevertheless, the Roadster is fully developed for Audi Sport performance with the turbocharged 2-liter engine that churns out 228hp.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

The styling of the TT Roadster creates a unique feeling of superiority. Besides the retractable acoustic roof, the iconic linings on the compact body and the Signature grille create a unique silhouette of the TT Roadster. The fun-to-drive factor is prevalent in the driving nature which can be customized further for tracks using some packages. The only thing it misses out on is a manual transmission setup which might make some enthusiasts sing the blues. No worries! It still manages to be a worthy seating place for drivers. Gone are the days when Audi TT was the panjandrum, but today with models like Porsche 718 Boxster, BMW Z4, and Mercedes-Benz C-Class Cabriolet, the compact car segment has become a battle arena.

2022 Audi TT Roadster Features

The 2022 Audi TT Roadster is a part and parcel of the Audi TT lineup and is base-priced at $53,900. It is basically distinguished from the lineup on the basis of having an acoustic power-retractable roof. It is powered by a 2-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that gets paired with a Stronic 7-speed dual-clutch transmission, while flat-bottom-steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters are also available to increase convenience. Integration with the Audi’s Quattro All-wheel drive makes the system deliver higher composure and stability.

The Singleframe signature grille and finely crafted exteriors make the passers-by turn their heads. The 18-inch 5-double-spoke dynamic design wheels, electric rear spoiler, and LED headlights as well as LED taillights are some other cool exterior features that catch the eyes. The front seats are heated and covered in fine Nappa leather highlighting the diamond stitching. Dual-zone automatic climate control system and side-heat insulating class make the interiors cozy for the passengers.

The 12-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system accounts for a dynamic audio experience. The 12.3-inch fully digital Audi Virtual Cockpit, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto compatibility, Navigation Plus collectively work out to deliver seamless infotainment engagement for the driver. Although the Audi TT Roadster lacks a lot of driving assist features, it does have a Parking assist feature, rearview camera, cruise control system, and a bunch of airbags to make the ride safe and secure.

We Recommend

The 2022 Audi TT Roadster 45TFSI is a standalone trim that packs in most of the stuff as standard. The only package it offers is an S Line Competition package that customizes the features and tech for higher performance levels. The most noteworthy upgrades this package offers include summer performance tires, S Line sport suspension, and red brake calipers.

It also adds some graphic enhancements and interior refinements, but all this comes for $2,100 extra which may not please everyone. There are nine exterior color options, three-wheel design options, and three interior color options to choose from. The interior and exterior color options are either free, or the paid ones vary between a range of $595 to $3900.

2022 Audi TT Roadster Release Date

Audi has not yet revealed any specific date or timespan to point out the release of the 2022 models. But the Audi has confirmed TT Roadster availability in the 2022 model year lineup with a starting price of $53,900 which remains unchanged from the previous year. That said, the availability of 2022 Audi vehicles is expected to be in Fall 2021.

2022 Audi TT Roadster Engine and Performance

The 2022 Audi TT Roadster cleverly encompasses a powerful 2-liter turbocharged engine that produces 228 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. This engine gets paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. You also get enhanced traction owing to the standard Quattro all-wheel-drive that is widely considered to be unbeatable as the supreme all-wheel-drive offering in the segment. Due to the refined powertrain, the 0-60mph time has been clocked at 5.5 seconds and the red line is set at 155 mph.

2022 Audi TT Roadster 2.0L Engine

Performance-wise, the 2022 Audi TT Roadster is engaging to drive, with superb steering and a true sports car-like feel. The weight-saving MacPherson strut suspension with aluminum subframe and dynamic axle kinematics at the front along with the Four-link suspension at the rear provides feather-light handling when it comes to controlling, but it can be of bit firm on the quality part, although that doesn't mean it's uncomfortable. It rides as well as a mid-engined compact sports vehicle in a manner that mixes competence and familiarity.

The TT Roadster already has responsive throttle and acceleration, but if you want to further spice things up, you can opt for the performance-oriented S line sport package. This modification of the Roadster leads to improved dynamic driving characteristics. However, this version remains a sports car that focuses on driving fun and can get really bumpy on normal wavy roads.

Yet in real life, the grin-inducing base TT Roadster is the only one with standard AWD and has a deceptively emotionally engaging personality, thanks to the car covering so much impressive top-end speed and low-end torque using a mere 2.0L engine. Despite all this, the Audi TT Roadster does not stack up that well against other sporty roadsters of this segment. We’ll get to know why now. All the roadster rivals put down more power than the Audi TT Roadster.

To elaborate further, the Porsche 718 Boxster has a good 72 more ponies than the TT Roadster and roughly 20 lbs of extra torque. The BMW Z4 engine is also more potent producing 28 ponies more than the TT Roadster, along with a maximum output torque of 295 lb-ft. While getting these machines revving from a complete halt, the 718 Boxster is the fastest to cross the 60 mph mark, while the Audi TT Roadster is the slowest one of the roadsters. The only car that the TT Roadster manages to outpace is the Mercedes-Benz C-class cabriolet.

2022 Audi TT Roadster Fuel Economy

The Audi TT Roadster machine although has less drama but still very remains cleverly engineered which converts to an acceleration that is eye-catching and super-civilized without hampering the frugal roadster’s true power-plant image. That said, the 2022 Audi TT Roadster city mileage is about 23 mpg and the highway mileage of 31 mpg is very impressive as well. All this combines to an average mileage of 26 mpg. It also has a decently sized fuel tank that can store up to 14.2 gallons. Thus, the Audi TT Roadster seems to be quite fuel-efficient for its class.

The punch of the Porsche 718 Roadster comes at the stake of reduced fuel economy figures as it returns only 22mpg on a combined basis. When the combined figures are taken into consideration, the BMW Z4 Roadster seems to be the most fuel-efficient. The Mercedes-Benz C class cabriolet, despite accelerating slower than the Audi TT Roadster, gets a bit less combined mpg average.

If all the mileage figures mentioned in the above table are looked at carefully, the BMW takes the game a level higher becoming the most frugal, yet powerful roadster in the class. But the Audi TT Roadster strikes the perfect balance of power, fuel economy, and mileage just because of the higher fuel tank capacity than the BMW Z4.

2022 Audi TT Roadster Interior

You can surely admire efficient, simple, and surprisingly neat interiors, and see how passion and imagination collaborate in the car. It seems to be a fruit of Audi's Avant and you'll be reminded how much Audi designers respect their fans through this interior. An eye could only spot the use of premium quality material in the Audi TT Roadster interiors. The center console and door armrests are covered in leather. The aluminum door sills and aluminum drift inlays impart subtle luster while giving a texture to the design. The TT Roadster also has fine Nappa leather seating embedded with diamond pattern stitching. Two passengers can be seated comfortably in these seats and it also offers a decent cargo space of 7.5 cubic feet.

2022 Audi TT Roadster Dashboard

The most spectacular part is the driving position and comfort. The Audi TT Roadster perfectly shows the boundaries of Audi's philosophy when it comes to design: the designers make it clear that speed, agility, and efficiency are most important, but comfort should not be compromised for the same. Along with the seating position, the car enthusiasts would also like to have a whale of a time with the 3-spoke flat-bottom steering wheel having paddle shifters. The heating function for front seats and dual-zone automatic climate control take care that the cabin environment setup is the most pleasurable for the passengers. The LED ambient interior lighting and keyless entry are some other standard features that could come in handy.

All the cars in this league offer a seating capacity of up to two passengers, i.e they have only one row, except for the Mercedes-Benz C class cabriolet which offers two rows of seating. But as it is clear from the above table, the second row of the Mercedes-Benz C class cabriolet has limited space even for teenagers, but it can certainly be used to carry stuff if someone wants. Despite having two rows, the front seats and trunk space of the Mercedes-Benz C-class cabriolet are roomier than the Audi TT Roadster.

The tabular data also clearly shows that the BMW Z4 is the most spacious Roadster in the segment. The BMW Z4 is cavernous not only in terms of passenger space but also in terms of the luggage carrying capacity at 9.9 cubic feet. After BMW, the Porsche 718 Roadster offers a decent trunk space of 9.6 cubic feet, but beware as this space is divided into two compartments - one at the front, another at the rear. The standout interior features include:

  • Fine Nappa leather seating with diamond pattern stitching
  • 3-spoke flat-bottom steering wheel having paddle shifters
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control
  • Heated seats
  • LED ambient interior lighting
  • Keyless entry

How intuitive is the 2022 Audi TT Roadster’s infotainment unit?

First things first, the driver-centric cockpit is well-laid, beyond clean, and simple. The 12.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster also remote is the Audi virtual cockpit is the only screen you would find inside, there is no other center screen. It can be used as an information cluster in the classic mode or switched to the infotainment mode as and when desired.

Most of the functions can be customized using the steering-wheel-mounted controls but the Audi's biggest fanatics can spot the touchpad with handwriting technology as a bit of fun in it. Some of the standard features offered by the Audi TT Roadster include Android Auto, Apple Carplay, navigation, HD radio with single CD player, wireless charging, and 12-speaker Bang & Olufsen Sound system. The Android Auto compatibility is the most surprising inclusion as most other cars of the segment do not support the same. The standout infotainment features include:

  • 12.3-inch fully-digital Audi Virtual Cockpit
  • Android Auto & Apple Carplay compatibility
  • Navigation
  • HD radio with single CD player
  • Wireless charging
  • 12-speaker Bang & Olufsen Sound system

2022 Audi TT Roadster Exterior

Since the first-generation Audi TT emerged in 1998 and the roadster came out in 1999, they have embodied a specific style aesthetically and an added polarizing German quality. But Audi did reset the brand’s image to something less front-heavy with the 2021 facelift. The Trapezoidal Singleframe signature grille, full LED headlights and DRLs, finely crafted body linings, and the 18-inch 5-double-spoke dynamic design wheels make it stylish. The main spiced-up feature that adds lots of funky flairs is the drop-top power-folding acoustic roof.

2022 Audi TT Roadster Three Quarter View

When the rooftop drops, the electrically adjustable wind deflectors integrated into the top direct the wind in a way that avoids inconvenience to the driver. It’s awesome to watch the electric spoiler shoot out at the rear when pushing the throttle hard. The optional S Line competition package marches a step forward into style imparting some black exterior elements and accents along with 19-inch Sport wheels and red calipers.

The Mercedes-Benz C-class cabriolet is the bulkiest, lengthiest, and widest car amongst the segment. The Porsche 718 Boxster is the lightest, shortest, and smallest cabriolet in the class. Thus, the weight and dimension factors rightly reflect in the acceleration figures of these cars. The Audi TT Roadster is the shortest platform when measured from nose to tail.

Although the Mercedes-Benz C Class cabriolet has the least ground clearance of 3.8 inches, other exterior dimensions don’t go well along with it. Both the Porsche 718 Boxster and Audi TT Roadster are the next ones to drive low enough from the ground at 4.4 inches. All told, this has given the TT Roadster a wider track and exceptional looks, but the Porsche 718 Boxster has its own swag. Some standout exterior features of the Audi TT Roadster include:

  • Power retractable acoustic roof
  • Trapezoidal Singleframe signature grille
  • Full LED headlights and DRLs
  • Electrically adjustable wind deflectors
  • Electric rear spoiler

2022 Audi TT Roadster Safety

When it comes to safety, the Audi TT Roadster is one of the cars that has never been tested by the NHTSA or IIHS. But crashworthiness can't be overlooked if you want to stay safe on the roads. To ensure it, Audi has incorporated some active as well as passive safety features and designed the TT Roadster as a strong structure made to protect occupants. It consists of advanced driver and front passenger airbags as well as side airbags that work together in extreme cases making it safer and stronger than a typical car.

It also has a cruise control system and top speed limiter which does not let one exceed the speed beyond 155 mph. The rearview camera is also helpful at times, although the Audi Parking Assist and Side Assist are the most useful driving assist features that are offered standard in the Audi TT Roadster. Sadly it lacks many other advanced driving assist technologies that rivals offer. The standout safety features of the 2022 Audi TT Roadster include:

  • Advanced driver and front passenger airbags
  • Cruise control
  • 155mph top speed limiter
  • Audi Parking Assist
  • Audi Side Assist
  • Rearview camera

2022 Audi TT Roadster Competition

2022 Audi TT Roadster vs 2022 Porsche 718 Boxster

The Porsche 718 Boxster offers a spirited, dynamic, and combative drive as well as a super squirreling experience. The manual transmission of the Porsche 718 Boxster adds so much more fun putting the power on the fingertips of the driver. There aren’t many 3,000+pound cars with these kinds of characteristics. The Audi TT Roadster looks great and has much higher fuel efficiency for the power offered, all this at a considerably lower price than the Porsche 718 Boxster. But true enthusiasts like us wouldn’t mind paying extra for the Porsche 718 Boxster, knowing that the driving experience would pay off later.

2022 Audi TT Roadster vs 2022 BMW Z4

The 2022 BMW Z4 is more powerful, faster, practical, efficient, and less expensive than the 2022 Audi TT Roadster. The driving experience of the BMW Z4 is also much more refined than the latter. Thus, we see no reason to even consider Audi TT Roadster for a second unless AWD is the topmost requirement on your list.

2022 BMW Z4 Three Quarter View

2022 Audi TT Roadster vs 2022 Mercedes-Benz C Class Cabriolet

We would give the 2022 Audi TT Roadster an edge over the 2022 Mercedes-Benz C Class Cabriolet because it would beat the Mercedes-Benz C-Class in every area, except for one. But we’ll get to that later. First, let’s examine why I believe the upcoming Audi TT Roadster will outclass the C Class Cabriolet when it goes on sale. The Audi TT Roadster, regardless of what set of optional equipment it’s equipped with, will have a lower curb weight than the C Class Cabriolet.

2022 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Cabriolet Side View

And, as we’ll get it driving in a moment, this lower curb weight will be very welcome as it makes the Audi TT Roadster much more supple than the C-Class cabriolet. Despite outpacing the C-Class in performance, the TT Roadster also offers a bit higher fuel economy. The next thing is the standard AWD setup of the Audi, for which the C-Class needs extra money to put in. The only area where the Mercedes-Benz C Class is better is the passenger and trunk space with a two-row setup. Unless you have small children to sit in the rear, or you don’t have/want another car to take care of commuting with family, the Audi TT Roadster must be your natural choice.

2022 Audi TT Roadster Final Verdict

The new Audi TT Roadster definitely has splendid looks and provides a great combination of power, mileage, and range. But it's not the most fun driving or enthralling roadster in the segment. If you want an unrivaled driving experience, go with the Porsche 718 Boxster. If you want more power and practicality, the BMW Z4 does it the best. But if you want an athletic marvelous-looking roadster that has AWD, the Audi TT Roadster hits the spot without any doubt. That said, you can never go wrong mistaking the Audi TT Roadster for any other car.
