2017 Audi TTS Complete In-depth Review & Buying Guide

Ever since the time the first Audi TT went up for sale in the market in 1999, it has been a hugely popular car amongst the car buyers. And Audi deserves all the credit as it based this Coupe on the set Audi formula of stylish designing coupled with a powerful yet frugal engine. This car, like its predecessors, obviously going to be a hit and compete with the likes of the BMW 230i Coupe, the Cadillac ATS Coupe, and the Infiniti Q60 2.0t.

However, even with a price of around $52,500, the TTS Coupe, one has to say, is expensive than the rest, and despite that, comes with a similar engine.

2017 Audi TTS Engine

The 2017 Audi TTS Coupe is powered by a 2.0-liter TFSI 4-cylinder direct injection Engine which produces 292 hp at 5400rpm and 280 lb-ft at 1900rpm, which provides an option for an all-wheel-drive system with the 6-speed automatic transmission as standard.

Standard all-wheel drive means it's sure-footed in any kind of weather - Caranddriver

The TFSI direct injection engine has been specially designed to improve the fuel efficiency, and one must say that it does the needful pretty well.

All the four rivals have a similar capacity 2.0-liter engine which even produces comparable amount of torque and power, as mentioned earlier.

The TTS has an all-wheel drive that gives ride comfort and quality. The TTS Coupe, despite a similar engine, plays the perfect catch-up to its competitors, reaching the speed of 60 mph in 4.6 seconds and covering a quarter mile in 12.8 seconds. Both the figures are best in class.

We have to say that the BMW and the Cadillac are pretty much same while going from 0-60 mph as well as the quarter mile segment, going head-to-head in both the parameters. However, the Infiniti Q60 lags way behind its rivals, something the Infiniti engineers need to look into as quickly as possible.

Handling and Steering

The drive and handling quality of the Audi has always been top class, and the TTS Coupe doesn't disappoint either. The Drive select mode is amazing, as it adds up to the weight of the steering and makes the car much more confident at high speeds.

As it is an all-wheel drive, the Audi is agile along the corners and responds well with the all season tires.

The 2017 Audi TTS Coupe has the brakes which match its acceleration. It does get the Anti-locking braking system, which does well on bad roads.

Curb Weight (lbs.) 3263 3373 3411 3727
60-0 MPH (ft.) 103.0 106 115 113

The brake sizes are also great, with the TTS Coupe taking about 103 feet to stop from a speed of 60 mph. Again these figures are best in class and that too by a pretty big margin in this regard.

This Audi Coupe does look like any other premium Audi available in the market. With the trademark vertical rails and the Audi logo, this coupe looks as good as any available in the market. The bigger tires too add up to the look. The metallic paint too looks pleasing to the eye.

2017 Audi TTS Fuel Economy

The much more refined engine does what was expected from it. With a city mpg of 23 mpg and that of 27 on the highway, this economy is definitely top notch from Audi.

MPG (city) 23 24 22 22
MPG (highway) 27 35 31 30

The Infiniti and the Cadillac too give equal economy figures of 25 mpg combined, while the BMW 230i is the best in this parameter with an economy of 28 mpg.

2017 Audi TTS Interior

While the previous TTS Coupe had a decent interior design, the new TTS has one of the best cabins in this range. The new digital gauges give it a sporty feel yet a premium look as well. And with a touchscreen infotainment system, it makes the cabin experience, one with the highest quality.

"Impeccable cabin design bolstered by an impressive level of technology" -Edmunds

Seating and Comfort

The 2017 Audi TTS is a two-row cruiser which accommodates 4 people. It provides heated and cooled seating as well. The passenger rear seats are also electrically powered. The driver's seat is a bit hard but that shouldn't be much of an issue.

The BMW 230i coupe is the best here as well, but the Audi is just a shade behind, while the Infiniti, the engineers need to rework this parameter as well.

2017 Audi TTS Exterior

Dimension and Weight

The Audi has always looked sleek and stylish, and this one is the same as well. It looks beautiful from the inside as well as from the outside.

Track width (in) F/R 62.0/61.1 59.9/61.3 60.3/61.7 61.2/62.2

The Audi does lag behind in this parameter. It is the smallest car in this regard, with the smallest ground clearance of 4.4 inches. What is worth mentioning is that despite the small dimensions, the cabin looks roomier from the inside.

The BMW is the best under this parameter, with the biggest cabin space and ground clearance, showing off its off-road nature.

2017 Audi TTS Competition

BMW 230i Coupe Vs Audi TTS Coupe

The Audi and the BMW have almost the same engine specifications, and while the Audi does have a better pickup and acceleration along with braking, a $19,000 price difference is too big a difference to ignore. Add to that that the BMW is much more spacious and fuel efficient.

So, with such a big price difference and the fact that the BMW does score on practicality, it will be seen as the obvious pick amongst the two heavyweights.

Cadillac ATS Coupe Vs Audi TTS Coupe

The Audi has far more advantages than the Cadillac ATS Coupe. Although the engine and power generation is the same, the Audi acceleration cannot be left behind. It also has a much roomier and spacious cabin than the Cadillac.

The Cadillac is although the bigger car, the underrated Interiors come to the fore for the Audi, which also has a much bigger trunk. Thus emerging as a clear winner here, price disregarded.

Infiniti Q60 2.0t Vs Audi TTS Coupe

Again like the other two, the engine of the Infiniti Q60 and the Audi TTS Coupe are similar. But sad to say, that is the only parameter where the Infiniti does well to compete with the likes of the Audi and the BMW.

Acceleration, pickup, braking, trunk space, interior comfort, you name it and the Audi win it big time! The only consolation for the Infiniti can be that it has a similar fuel economy and ground clearance.

Enough said no guesses for guessing the Audi is the clear winner, despite the huge price difference.

2017 Audi TTS Final Verdict

The 2017 Audi TTS Coupe may not be too cheap and doesn't have a big engine. However, it is nothing short of a true Audi experience. It gives the sporty feel, is luxurious from the inside and has a peppy drive quality to it.

It has got everything, right from the sleek styling and comfy interiors to a peppy and responsive engine. Add to that the price at which it comes, which is too less for so many features.

However, if you look at the rivals, one can say without any hesitation that the BMW 230i would be a more practical buy. Although both of them go head-on in all the parameters, the space inside the cabin and the ground clearance is something which pips the comparison in BMW's favor. Also the price difference is too big to not have a look at.
