Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

The 2022 Bentley Bentayga Speed is available with a massive 6.0L W12 that uses twin turbocharging and is 600 horsepower strong with 664 lb-ft of torque paired to a 8-speed automatic unit that enables 12.0-second quarter mile times with a 3.6 seconds run to 60 MPH. The Bentayga’s prime competitors include the Lamborghini Urus, the Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600, and the Rolls Royce Cullinan

Features

The 2022 Bentley Bentayga Speed is offered as a single trim variant which is expected to be priced around $250,000. For the price, the SUV offers the best in terms of features and luxury from the British marque’s stable with the best materials used even in the smallest of switches all around the cabin. SUVs like the Bentayga also have a lot of easter eggs built into the cabin which make the ownership experience better by just so much.

As for the packages on offer, the Bentayga can be equipped with 5 different “Specifications” that add a ton of features to the SUV’s features list with some like Night Vision Assist, underfloor protection, electrically operated blinds for rear side windows, embroider Bentley emblems, and Drive Dynamics Mode with responsive off-road settings being the most notable ones.

We recommend

The 2022 Bentley Bentayga Speed is a standalone trim and thus makes the most sense due to all the features that are on offer and for the craftsmanship which remains the same on all the trims. One can surely go for the Touring Specification that lends a beny of driver-assistance features to make driving this big SUV safe.

Release Date

There is no official confirmation regarding the launch date of the 2022 MY of the Bentley Bentayga Speed, however, we expect to be in tandem with the previous year launch schedules and hit dealerships later this year.

Engine and Performance
9.0/10

The 2022 Bentley Bentayga Speed comes powered with a twin turbocharged 6.0L W12 that is mated to an 8-speed automatic gearbox that is sent to all the four wheels as standard. This powerplant is rated at 626 horsepower and 664 lb-ft of torque for both the trims. Since the SUV’s off-road capability is unmatched in this class, it is imperative to mention how good it performs when in the trails. The adaptive suspension does a fantastic job of negotiating with the trails and the switchable driving modes map the throttle and the gearbox according to the terrain selected. The engine’s power is plenty to push this heavy SUV through the trails and mud onto the road where it will be driven for the most part of its life.

In the city, the SUV’s air suspension soaks up everything pretty well and makes the drive feel as if on a magic carpet. The quiet cabin keeps the ambient noises out and the suspension softens, giving a very relaxing driving experience. The gearbox does take its time when driving slowly but when required, it is a quick unit. The Bentayga looks imposing and has a lot of street cred for the way it looks and glides. The view from the cabin is high and the visibility is good. The pillars might be huge but the big rear-view mirrors do a fantastic job of increasing the visibility.

The relaxing drive characteristics are further amplified while on the highway with the super-quiet cabin and strong pull from the twin turbocharged unit under the hood. The suspension, again, makes the drive smoother while the gearbox ensures there’s no jerks at all while shifting. When equipped with the Touring Specification, the active driver assist features take the fatigue out of the drive enabling miles after miles of comfortable gliding. On a twisty road, the Sports mode does the most justice to the big SUV by stiffening up the suspension that prevents body roll and enables a more precise steering which lets the big SUV corner flat and also be in control of the driver.

The Bentayga does come at a good price when compared to the rivals and given all the craftsmanship on offer, the SUV gets a very similar setup to the others. The GLS gets a EQ Boost which helps in the initial acceleration but is not enough to beat the others. The Bentayga is impressively fast given the W12 and also gets a torque advantage over the Cullinan that helps in stupendous initial punch. It is quicker than both the Mercedes-Maybach and Rolls Royce taking 3.6 seconds to the 60mph, but remains 0.4 seconds slower than the Lamborghini Urus that produces a mammoth 641hp.

Fuel Economy
9.0/10

When one can afford a big SUV like the Bentayga Speed, fuel bills aren’t really a concern for them and that said, the EPA rates the SUV at a meagre 12 MPG in the city and 19 MPG on the highway, for a combined 15 MPG from its 22.5-gallon fuel tank. The bigger W12 engine has worse fuel economy figures, obviously, but the performance gain over the V8 is worth it.

The SUVs under the Volkswagen group share similar fuel tank sizes but the EPA ratings are very different for all the SUVs; and the Bentayga stands the most fuel-efficient of all with the EPA ratings at 15 MPG combined. The Mercedes-Maybach has a bigger tank that can hold 23.8-gallons and aids in the range and the overall efficiency of 16 MPG remains the most due to the EQ Boost motor paired to the engine that helps in increasing the efficiency. The Rolls-Royce Cullinan and Lamborghini Urus, on the other hand average similar efficiencies of 14 MPG, but the former has the most voluminous tank in the segment that helps averaging class-competing range of 370 miles.

Interior
9.0/10

The interior of the Bentayga is as luxurious as the word can get. Everything that you see, and touch, is quilted in soft leather and contrast stitching that can be customised to one's tastes and preferences. The customers also have the flexibility of choosing from different types of leather and other materials for their seating. The door panels have padded leather and solid aluminium door handles that give a very distinct look and also add a lot to the visual platter of the cabin. Speaking of the visuals, the Bentayga can also be opted in different colours and tones as per the preferences of the customer.

The dashboard is soft leather and carries the whole contrast stitching theme as well. There is a customisable trim piece in the dashboard which also surrounds the aluminum finished AC vents along with the pull-switches that enable the vents’ functions. Apart from this, the centre of the dashboard also houses an analogue clock that adds to the charm of being in a Bentley. In the centre console, there are various buttons for the climate control, the heated/ventilated seats, drive mode selector, a couple of cup holders, the traction control and the hill descent control. The trim surrounding these is customisable as well.

The seats in the SUV are as comfortable as one's imagine with soft leather upholstery and a myriad of adjustments on offer for both the driver and the front passenger. The seats also get heating and ventilation along with power lumbar adjustment for added comfort. In the rear seats, the comfort is very similar to the front seats and these rear seats can be had in a bench, or as two captain chairs. The centre console in the rear has controls for the climate control and also adjust different aspects of the SUV’s comfort.

The Bentayga’s cabin is very spacious with a lot of legroom on offer. The headroom might not be as good as what the Maybach offers but the shoulder room is ample, although not available on the internet. It gets a total cargo capacity of 17 cu.-ft which is smaller than what the GLS 600 offers, but only diminutively. The craftsmanship in the cabin is unmatched by any rival and the attention to detail is rather impeccable at this price point. Having said that, some of the highlighting interior features in the SUV are:

  • Panoramic sunroof
  • Keyless entry and ignition
  • Full-leather seating
  • Three-zone automatic climate control
  • Power-adjustable and heated/ventilated front seats
  • Full leather interior

Exterior
9.0/10

The 2022 Bentley Bentayga is a very solid looking SUV with a very high street presence and a very huge aura. The SUV got a redesign for the 2021 model year and it now geets a beefier chrome grille up front. The matrix LED headlights look very different from the other rivals and give a very distinct appearance of a Bentley product. The SUV gets a very simple design and there are no lines and cuts on the body - something that goes in line with the design philosophy of the brand. To the rear, the LED tail lights add a lot of aura as well and shouts Bentley at the cars following the Bentayga in traffic.

The Bentayga and the Urus come under the VW Group’s umbrella and hence, the structural integrity and dimensions are very close to each other. Of these, the Urus gets the most sporty dynamics along with the least weight of 4,844 lbs while the Bentayga is made more for luxury and sure-footedness which is further amplified by the shorter wheelbase of 117.9 inches that helps in getting a dynamic drive from the luxury barge. The Rolls-Royce Cullinan is undeniably the largest option in the segment and also sports the best-in-class ground clearance of 7.4 inches and though the Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600 is a tad-bit smaller, it is the heaviest option in the segment.

Some of the highlighting features of the new Bentley Bentayga Speed include:

  • Rear-wing spoiler
  • 21-inch wheels
  • Powered liftgate
  • Chrome body side moldings
  • LED brake lights
  • Optional 22-inch black alloy wheels
  • Optional unique oil and fuel filler caps
Safety
9.0/10

The 2022 Bentayga shares its chassis with other SUVs in the VW Group like the Audi Q8, the VW Touareg, and the Lamborghini Urus. That said, the strength of the overall structure is unquestionable and is proven by the other SUVs. One thing about the Bentayga is that the driver-assistance features that one expects at this segment is not there as standard and one has to add the Touring Specification to add other features like:

  • Traffic-adaptive cruise control
  • Lane keeping assist
  • Head-up display
  • Night-vision camera
  • Bentley safeguard
  • Traffic assist
Competition
9.0/10

2022 Bentley Bentayga Speed vs 2022 Lamborghini Urus

The Lamborghini Urus fits the competition as a sportier rival to the other SUVs with dynamic handling characteristics and an enthralling driving experience given the massive bump in power. The sportiness is also evident in the interior as well with the manufacturer-specific touches. The Bentley, on the other hand, aims at giving the most luxurious experience with strong performance but is also aimed more towards straight-line speed and comfortable driving on the highways.

2022 Bentley Bentayga Speed vs 2022 Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600

The German Merc-Maybach is a well-known offering that enjoys massive popularity given the Mercedes backing it has. It does come in under the Bentley’s price bracket and rivals the Bentayga in terms of craftsmanship but the Bentley’s performance is far more superior than the Merc. It is also the most efficient and has impeccable handling characteristics to justify its price premium over the Mercedes.

2022 Bentley Bentayga Speed vs 2022 Rolls Royce Cullinan

The Rolls Royce Cullinan and the Bentley Bentayga Speed are arch rivals when it comes to luxury and performance, with the latter being tweaked more towards sporty handling characteristics. Both the SUVs are unbeatable in terms of craftsmanship and it really boils down to the point of spending the extra $100,000 over the Bentayga Speed for the extra exclusivity.

Final Verdict

The 2022 Bentley Bentayga gets the best value in the price segment as the most luxurious and driver-centric SUV that one can enjoy on any terrain. The quick engine and the slick gearbox does add a lot of charm to the whole package as well while pampering its occupants in the most luxurious and opulent way possible.
