2018 Bentley Continental GT Engine

8.0/10

"The Continental is a grand touring machine. It's heavy, but the adaptive suspension and all-wheel drive do their best to keep the car composed when you're driving around turns"- Edmunds

Engine and Transmission

The 2018 Bentley Continental GT is equipped with two engine options. A twin turbo V8 and a more powerful twin turbo W12 engine. Both engines are rated at high horsepower with a maximum output of 700 hp from a W12 engine available in the Supersport trim. All engines are mated to a 8-speed automatic transmission.

The engine has smooth power delivery and all-wheel drive configuration helps GT to get off the line quickly. The Continental GT directly competes with the Mercedes S65 and the Aston Martin Vanquish S, surprisingly its the most economical out of the three and produces highest power.

Braking

The Bentley Continental GT has good amount of bite from its brakes. It takes 115 ft to stop from 60 mph which is a decent figure for a car weighing around three ton.

Handling and Steering

Though bulky, the Continental GT has good road manners. It forms a perfect package of a Grand Touring vehicle. With a massive power house and unmatchable comfort it is a perfect blend of luxury and performance.

Adaptive suspension and a Torsen differential setup gives the Continental GT high speed stability and a comfortable driving experience. Also, the all-wheel drive configuration adds up to the cornering capabilities.

The steering is light and feels precise. It has a very comfortable and luxury feel to it. Stitched in high quality leather, it adds up to your driving pleasure.

2018 Bentley Continental GT Fuel Economy

The Continental GT is a thirsty car powered by a W12 engine. Though it has fuel conserving system which shuts off its 6 cylinders under light road conditions it is insufficient. It is rated at 12 mpg in city and 20 mpg on the highway and 14 mpg combined.

Seating and Comfort

The Continental GT is a great place to be in. It carries the old tradition of luxury and has executed it perfectly. Bentley offers many interior trim option to make your experience luxurious. The front seats are very comfortable and highly adjustable on compromising the space for rear passengers.

Visibility may be a issue for short drivers because of a high belt line. And being a convertible, there is no issue of visibility when the top is down. Also, getting out and in is pretty easy and it is a bit uncomfortable to get in back seats. One can also opt for massaging and ventilated seats for more comfort.

Infotainment

The Continental GT doesn't have a advanced interior design as you'll find in the Mercedes S65. Rather Bentley has decided to give it a retro luxury feel. It is equipped with analog dials and has a pinch of modern tech.

A 8.0 touch infotainment display which has DVD navigation, a wi-fi hotspot, and controls for the climate system and audio functions. Audiophiles can opt for the optional Naim audio system for the best experience.

Unlike modern luxury GTs, the Continental lacks multifunctional touchscreens, ambient lighting and so on. But, as a package the infotainment system feels complete and is easy to figure out than modern cars with too many integrated functions.

Cargo

The trunk can carry good amount of your luggage, about 9.1 ft.3 Short aperture of the truck opening makes it a little difficult to put in big suitcases and boxes. Unlike other cars rear seats don't fold down to increase the cargo area.

Dimension and Weight

The Bentley Continental GT is a huge car, in terms of dimension and weight. It is a grand car with plenty of space. With a wheelbase of 108 inches, it has plenty of space for the front passengers. Rear seat may feel cramped for tall people.

The Continental GT is one of the longest car in the segment and one may take time to get accustomed to its dimension while driving. Having a decent down clearance of 55.1 inches there is no worry while driving on country roads.

The Mercedes S65 is more longer than the Bentley. With more wheelbase than the Continental GT it gets more passenger volume and also weighs less which adds up to the efficiency.

2018 Bentley Continental GT Competition

Mercedes-Benz S65 AMG vs Bentley Conttinental GT

The Mercedes S65 is the more aggressive and powerful version of the S-Class. It's got a more powerful 6.0 L V12 engine and has great performance figures. Priced a bit higher than the Continental GT it gets loads of luxury features and latest tech on the inside.

It has two infotainment screens which covers more than half of the dashboard, ambient lighting, reclining back seats with ultimate comfort. So, the Mercedes S65 is a better option than the Continental GT, its the ultimate mix of performance and luxury.

Aston Martin Vanquish S Volante vs Bentley Conttinental GT

The AS Vanquish S Volante is the best looking super GT. Also, powered by a naturally aspirated V12 engine, it is a different experience from the twin turbo counter parts. The output is similar to that of Continental GT but being lighter it performs better and feels more sporty.

Like the Continental GT, the rear seats of Vanquish are less usable for adults. Choosing between the Continental and the Vanquish can be settled upon how it looks. If you want a subtle luxury car the Bentley Continental GT is a better choice and if you prefer a sporty and a aggressive looking car the Vanquish is the car to have.

2018 Bentley Continental GT Final Verdict

The Bentley Continental GT is a timeless cruiser. Its subtle luxury styling and retro styled interior design sets all new standard for the luxury car segment. Launched in two limited edition trims, the Continental GT is now more powerful and gets many new luxury options.

The Continental GT is a dream luxury Grand Tourer. Highly personalisable you can set yourself apart from the crowd. So, if you are looking for a traditional GT, the Continental GT is the best choice. But, if you want a more usable car the Mercedes Benz S65 AMG is worth consideration.
