Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

Freshly introduced for the 2020 model year, the 2022 model is a continuation without much in the name of changes. Prices start at an MSRP of $222,085 and that is quite a hefty sum. However, it starts to feel less like it when you consider how special the car is and how much it offers. It is available in a single trim level and there are several other trims and body styles offered but reviewed separately. It represents the best of technology in terms of luxury sports cars and competes against the BMW M850i xDrive Convertible, Mercedes-Benz AMG GT convertible, and Porsche 911 S convertible.

The Bentley Continental GT Mulliner V8 convertible a single trim level out of the car’s available six trim levels and multiple optional packages. Even though it is quite expensive, it comes with an excellent infotainment system, an excellent engine and powertrain and so on that should keep its owners very happy. Apart from this Bentley offers a lot of options when it comes to painting finishes, interior trim and so on that allows you to personalize your car to your heart’s content. The Mulliner is a special package and comes with several additions to the GT V8 convertible.

We recommend

It is not hard selecting which trim to buy because there is only one trim on offer. However, one might go dizzy looking at the options list as well as the personalization the brand offers for the particular model. Some things cannot be changed as they are special to the Mulliner package but even with this, the brand offers an endless list of customization options. The 2022 model sees updates to the chassis and some handling enhancements. There are some new options available as well.

2022 Bentley Continental GT Mulliner V8 Convertible Release date

Bentley has already launched the 2022 Continental GT line up but due to the pandemic restrictions, the deliveries have been pushed further ahead. As part of official releases so far, we expect that this date might be around early 2022. There have been no confirmations from the brand regarding the same but we do expect the cars to be available very soon. Press cars and showroom cars have been dispatched and the testing has been done, we can expect the production models to hit the showroom real soon.

Engine and Performance

Even though the Continental GT is available in a W-12 configuration as well, the V-8 itself is one hell of a powerhouse and wouldn’t leave one wishing for more power. It is powered by a 4 L twin-turbocharged V-8 engine that produces 542 hp and 568 pound-feet of torque. The drivetrain layout is all-wheel drive which is in contrast to the rear-wheel-drive systems that were used previously. This gives it ground-breaking levels of traction as well as handling prowess. Overall, it is a car that manages to hide its way really well and remains athletic even when wafting around.

Its acceleration is extremely quick because of the engine tuning. This results in a 0 to 60 mph time of 3.4 seconds and a quarter-mile time of just 11.8 seconds which is not too far off from many supercars. The top speed of this car has been tested to be 198 mph which even though scary, does not feel anything scary while driving this car. Even with its heavyweight, the handling of the car is excellent and so is the braking performance.

One can see that among the competitors, the Bentley is a much more expensive option, almost by $100,000. However, when it comes to performance, all the competitors remain nearly identical. The Bentley has the highest top speed which is surprising even though the car is much heavier. In terms of acceleration figures, all are nearly equal but the Porsche 911 has a very big advantage despite being very low on power. The Bentley is the fastest car on paper and the second fastest on the road.

Fuel Economy

One would not expect a lot of fuel efficiency out of a 4 L twin-turbocharged V-8 engine that produces 542 hp. They end up drinking as much as they could and end up burning a hole in their pocket. However, one advantage of cars from the new era is that they do not drink fuel as their ancestors did. In terms of fuel efficiency, the Bentley returns 19 MPG combined which is an unheard figure in this segment. Even the city fuel efficiency is 16 MPG and combined with a tank of 24 gallons, it gives it serious credentials to be a continent crusher.

We find that the Bentley has the highest range figures out of this category while the Porsche 911 claims the least. The fuel efficiency of all cars is nearly at par and we find in the Bentley is surprisingly not on the lower end of the spectrum. The Porsche 911 has very impressive technology in this regard. The Mercedes-AMG has the lowest fuel efficiency numbers but compensates with a larger tank. The Bentley has the highest range figures of up to 618 miles on a full tank of gas on the highway.

Most people wouldn’t answer this question because the answer is so obvious. We find that the interior is plush with aromatic leather and wood veneers while everything is nearly customizable. There are a number of material comforts inside the car that include electrically adjustable front seats, knurled control knobs, and double-stitched diamond pattern seat trim. Bentley has made it a point to concentrate on giving customers the best experience inside the car and has always achieved that. The new cars are no different.

One is also greeted with excellent fit and finish which is setting new standards for the automotive industry as a whole. Ingress and egress are also very easy and we find that the driving and seating positions are very convenient. There is also abundant space inside the cabin but will never find themselves complaining. The seats are very supportive while also being extremely light and visibility is also great from the cabin. Cargo capacity is very low but that is not something that buyers in the segment exactly look for. There are design elements that are very retro and yet very modern.

If there is one category in which the Bentley outperforms competitors by standing miles it is in terms of interior. All the cars offer seating for four people except the Mercedes AMG. However, it comes to rear seat space, its competitors offer next to nothing while the Bentley shows that it can be a capable luxury car in this regard. The interior dimensions of most are unknown but they are very much lesser than the Bentley. As well as the cargo space, is adequate in the Bentley and excellent in the BMW. All are extremely modern and dynamic in terms of design and promise very unique driving experiences. Some standard features include:

  • Dual-tone color split interior trim
  • Single-tone, 3-spoke, hide trimmed steering wheel
  • Alcantara headlining
  • Semi-Aniline Leather to Seats and Door Inserts
  • Inductive Phone Charger (Wireless Charging)
  • LED welcome lamps by Mulliner
  • Ambient lighting
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control
  • 12-way heated and ventilated power-adjustable front seats

What’s there to keep you entertained in the 2022 Bentley Continental GT Mulliner V8 Convertible?

When it comes to infotainment options, there is a 12.3 inch infotainment display that sits in the center of the dashboard. The driver information display is also gone digital this time around. One will find these modern interfaces sitting next to traditional dials and gauges in a way that snow the car manages to pull it off. The audio system is also quite nice and provides smartphone connectivity. There are all the modern features one would want in a new car and also something else. Some features of the infotainment system include:

  • 12.3 inch infotainment display
  • 30 GB hard drive for instant access to map data
  • Bluetooth connection
  • Heads-up Display
  • 4G LTE Wi-Fi Hotspot
  • Sirius XM Integrated satellite navigation
  • Night Vision Camera
  • Apple CarPlay

The Bentley Continental GT is a truly beautiful piece of design that will go on to become a future masterpiece. We feel that they preferred the coupe over the convertible in terms of the design but that is not to say that the latter is dull. It is not entirely futuristic and the design is a look back at the tradition of Bentley. Aerodynamics has been the deciding factor in some of the areas of this car and that adds an element of modern 82 it. It has excellent road presence and is a very special thing to look at. It has a certain dynamism to the design and a sense of purpose that is very much distinguishable. We find it absolutely stunning and buyers have felt the same way.

Ground Clearance

The Mercedes and the Porsche are smaller than all of their competitors but we also have to remember that they are also a bit cheaper. The Porsche has the shortest wheelbase which makes it much more agile and nimble than its competitors. The Bentley is extremely long and heavy, tipping the scales at nearly 5315 pounds. In terms of weight, the Porsche and Mercedes are on the lighter side and only about 3500 pounds. In terms of ground clearance, all cars offer the minimum acceptable amount but the Mercedes suffers the most in this department. The Bentley has adequate ground clearance. Some standout features include:

  • 21” alloy wheel - painted
  • Full LED matrix-headlamps with High Beam Assist
  • Soft-top roof
  • Deployable rear spoiler
  • Full LED tail lamps
  • Twin oval stainless steel tailpipes
  • Heated Windshield

When it comes to safety, Bentley has always been a pioneer. It has been a responsible manufacturer that has provided speed but also the means to bring it down and the protection that customers need during an emergency situation. However, being a car that is produced in extreme volumes, it has not been evaluated by the NHTSA or the IIHS, and nor will it ever be. It comes with most of the advanced safety features available in the market today as standard features and one can rest assured that it is a safe car. It also has some of the most modern driver assistance features we would ever find in a car. Some of the standout safety features include:

  • Rearview camera
  • Front and rear parking sensors
  • Park assist system
  • Adaptive cruise control with traffic sign recognition
  • Night vision camera
  • Surround-view camera
  • Forward collision warning with autonomous emergency braking
  • Lane keep assist
  • Head-up display
  • Rear cross-traffic alert

2022 Bentley Continental GT Mulliner V8 Convertible Vs. 2022 BMW M850i xDrive Convertible

The BMW is probably the only car in the segment that is about the same size as the Bentley. However, it is offered at a much lower price than the Bentley and is also built to lower standards. For that price, we still feel that the BMW is a good pick but the Bentley surely has the performance and luxury to justify its higher price tag. The beauty also offers the largest boot space, fuel efficiency, and so on in the category that makes it an extremely competitive vehicle.

2022 Bentley Continental GT Mulliner V8 Convertible vs. 2022 Mercedes-AMG GT Convertible

The Mercedes-Benz AMG GT convertible is also another car that is much cheaper than the Bentley. However, it is not a car that can be used as much as the Bentley can. It comes with a lot of functional compromises and also offers a much lower amount of kit. The Bentley offers much better convenience features and so on over the Mercedes, while the Mercedes also has very bad fuel efficiency. The Mercedes is still a winner from a budget point of view and would be an excellent choice.

2022 Bentley Continental GT Mulliner V8 Convertible Vs. 2022 Porsche 911 Carrera S Convertible

The Porsche 911 convertible is a completely different car from the Bentley as it does not have a focus on luxury. However, it offers better performance credentials and also excellent build quality. It claims very tall performance figures and has got some interest in automotive circles. We feel that it could be a very exciting car and we’re also curious to find out how it performs in the real world. It must surely be a more exciting car to drive than the Bentley but it appeals to a very different audience.

Final Verdict

The 2022 Bentley Continental GT Mulliner V8 convertible is an extremely rare and high-performing car that is available at a very hefty price tag. However, if you wanted one car that could do it all, this would probably be it. With the current model change that happened in 2020, it has evolved into a very modern and sophisticated vehicle. It has no practical sacrifices whatsoever but offers some advantages that cannot ever be offered by any car that we have seen till now. It is certainly a car many of us aspire to own so if you have the money and the means, certainly go for it.
