Bentley's fanbase asked for more power under the hood. Adhering to these requests, Bentley created what the world knows as The Bentley Continental GT. The 2017 Bentley Continental GT Coupe comes with a number of engine options starting from a V8 going all the way up to a W12 engine paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel-drive system for an ultra-fast driving experience.

For the year 2020, the Continental GT went under the scalpel and emerged as a lighter, faster and a better overall proposition. It now shares its underpinnings with the Porsche's platform that is more stable and stronger than before. Also, a host of features have also been added to it, but you were already expecting that right?

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

This all-wheel driven coupe-like Gran Tourer ranks up against the likes of the Mercedes-Benz AMG S65 and the Rolls-Royce Wraith CoupeConsequently, the third-generation GT pumps out 626 hp and the W12 motor seems more engaging than ever before. So, it is easily as sporty as it is luxurious.

The Continental GT is an expensive luxury car. It comes with the finest quality materials and has a power-packed engine option. Being in the market for almost 14 years and though it has gone under minor changes it lacks some features of a modern luxury car.

All Continental GT's come in all-wheel configuration with 8-speed automatic transmission. The Continental GT is a luxury grand touring car. It features a high-quality interior design with superior quality wood and leather. One can highly personalise their Continental GT with a variety of optional features available with Premier Package and Black Edition Package. The iconic Porsche Panamera shares the same platform. Other than that, the new Continental GT features a new Super formed aluminium bodywork for weight reduction. Though the engine, transmission and drivetrain options remain unchanged.

The 2020 Bentley Continental GT is powered by the same dual-spiral twin-turbocharged W12 engine that makes 626 hp and 664 lb.-ft. torque. Also standard on this Bentley is an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and a rear-biased all-wheel-drive unit.

We recommend:

The Bentley Continental GT is highly recommended keeping in mind the fact that you have that kind of money to throw around. It drives and handles like a much smaller sports car. At the same time, it offers the kind of luxury and exclusivity you’d expect from a Bentley. Prices for this year’s Continental GT start at $200,000. There are several other additional packages on offer too that cost extra.

Engine and Performance

The 2020 Bentley Continental GT is equipped with two engine options. A twin-turbo V8 and a more powerful twin-turbo W12 engine. All that power translates from the engine to all four corners of this big coupe with the help of an 8-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission sourced from ZF. The all-wheel drive train is rear-wheel biased. So power from the engine is sent mostly to the rear two wheels of this Bentley.

2020 Bentley Continental GT W12 Coupe Produce 626 Horsepower

The engine has smooth power delivery and all-wheel-drive configuration helps GT to get off the line quickly. The Continental GT directly competes with the Mercedes S65 and the Aston Martin Vanquish S, surprisingly its the most economical out of the three and produces the highest power.

All other Gran Coupes in this segment get more or less equally powered engines. However, the Mercedes-Benz AMG S65’s engine makes the most torque.

As soon as you press down on the pedal the entire weight of this heavy coupe, which is now less than before, shifts to the back. The 8-speed ZF automatic shifts with urgency and the rear-wheel biased drive train  thrust the 2020  Bentley Continental GT ahead of its rivals.

2020 Bentley Continental GT W12 Coupe reach 0-60 in 4 sec

The Continental GT has lightning-fast acceleration due to its exceptional throttle response and next to none delay in sending power to the all-wheel-drive system. So even though on paper it might appear that the 2020  Bentley Continental GT makes the same amount of power, in reality, that makes a world of difference.

With peak torque available from as low as 1,350 rpm, and a rear-wheel biased drivetrain, the 2020 Bentley Continental GT is the quickest of the lot.

The new carbon-ceramic brakes of the 2020 Bentley Continental GT Coupe work effectively and produce a decent stopping power given its immaculate engine power and manage to bring the car at halt from 60 mph in just 105 feet. These chunky rotors do a great job bringing the 2020 Bentley Continental GT to a halt, even in emergency situations. Also, brake-fade is never an issue on this Bentley.

The Mercedes-Benz AMG S65 Coupe is the lightest of the lot. As a result, it stops much quicker than the rest.

Ride and Handling

The 2020 Bentley Continental GT stays perfectly balanced and planted on the tarmac. For the year 2020, Bentley has moved the front wheels forward by 135mm. Also, the engine has been shifted further back. As a result, only 55% of its mass now sits at front wheels as compared to the old GT’s 58%. The car remains very composed around the corners as well and you'd be surprised by the amount of speed you could be carrying into a car with such a heavy car. The chassis is very well designed and the weight distribution is great too, which apparently contributes to the handling.

Though bulky, the Continental GT has good road manners. It forms a perfect package of a Grand Touring vehicle. With a massive powerhouse and unmatchable comfort, it is a perfect blend of luxury and performance. There are several driving modes to choose from too, which include Comfort, Bentley, Sport and Custom. These modes alter engine, transmission, suspension and steering response with the help of a rotary knob. But no matter what mode you’re in, this Bentley never fails to remind you of its capabilities.

Fuel Economy

The all-wheel-drive unit of this Bentley favours the rear wheels in most situations, sending power to all the wheels only in scenarios that ask for it. Though it has a fuel conserving system which shuts off its 6 cylinders under light road conditions it is insufficient.

The Continental GT is a thirsty car powered by a W12 engine. Though it has a fuel conserving system which shuts off its 6 cylinders under light road conditions it is insufficient. It is rated at 12 mpg in city and 20 mpg on the highway and 14 mpg combined.

The Continental GT is a great place to be in. It carries the old tradition of luxury and has executed it perfectly. All the seats of this Continental GT feature massaging function and are 12-way power-adjustable, but that’s just the beginning. Availability of legroom is plenty in both the rows. The rear seats are comfortable for roaming around the town but for long trips, the lack of space can be felt especially if you are an adult.

Even the tiniest of buttons and knobs come together to act as one cohesive unit. The large windows provide a great view of the world outside, while the levels of insulation on the cabin form a perfect bubble of bliss to heighten the cabin experience. With an infinite range of customization from the colour of the leather hides to the wood trims, the stitching on the seats, the interiors are your palette to build your  dream car.

2020 Bentley Continental GT W12 Coupe Infotainment Screen

The Continental GT doesn't have an advanced interior design as you'll find in the Mercedes S65. Rather Bentley has decided to give it a retro luxury feel. The response from the touchscreen is also just as smooth. As a package, the infotainment system feels complete and is easy to figure out than modern cars with too many integrated functions. The system is quite a last generation and the competitors have moved a long way ahead with their infotainment systems.

Cargo Volume

The trunk, and the cabin as well, is lined with plush material. So you’d have to be extremely cautious about what you decide to put in it. Also, if you want, there’s an optional feature that allows you to pop the trunk’s lid without using your hands.

On the downside, the rear seats can’t be folded in this coupe. So you’d have to make do with what you got. Thanks to this Bentley’s well laid-out and spacious cabin, there’s no shortage of storage.

The Rolls-Royce Wraith benefits from its comparatively longer wheelbase. It has the largest trunk in this comparison.

The Bentley Continental GT is a huge car, in terms of dimension and weight and bears a timeless design. At the front, the Bentley mesh grille is wrapped in chrome. Even the windows and the full LED matrix headlights have been finished in chrome. At the sides, large wheel arches and fender vents give this Bentley its own character. The smooth and clean sculpts follow all the way to the back which houses dual tailpipes, again in chrome trim, in the rear diffuser.

Having a decent down clearance of 55.1 inches there is no worry while driving on country roads. The design is pretty neat and not like may other busy sports cars. Yet, it looks beautiful with classic sports car proportions. The swooping roofline looks absolutely stunning and the pronounced rear fender is very wide and gives the car plenty of character.

Bentley Continental GT v Rolls-Royce Wraith Coupe

The Bentley Continental GT and the Rolls-Royce Wraith Coupe are similar to each other in more than one way. Both offer extreme levels of elegance and sophistication. Both cars have just as extreme street presence. Lastly, both these coupes cost more than a fortune. However, as an overall package, the Bentley is a much better Gran Tourer. Except for the Wraith’s bigger trunk, the Continental GT is better than the former in all comparable aspects.

Rolls-Royce Wraith Coupe

Mercedes Benz S550 4MATIC vs Bentley Continental GT

The Mercedes Benz S550 4MATIC continues to represent the luxurious tradition of the S- Class. Featuring a 4.7-litre Biturbo V8 engine under its hood, the Mercedes Benz has rear-wheel drive and 9-speed automatic transmission as standard while all-wheel drive is optional. It also houses the safety features such as the enhanced autonomous driving functions and active body control.

Up against the 2017 Bentley Continental GT Coupe, it has a slight less powerful engine and acceleration as well as it also goes through a lack of cargo space but it is incredibly fuel-efficient in spite of being on the lower end of the price range.

Mercedes Benz S550 4MATIC
Final Verdict

The Bentley Continental GT is a timeless cruiser. Its subtle luxury styling and retro styled interior design sets all new standard for the luxury car segment. Launched in two limited edition trims, the Continental GT is now more powerful and gets many new luxury options. If you are willing to spend over $200,000 on a car, the 2020 Bentley Continental GT should definitely be on your list .
