Expert Review

CARHP Editorial October 31, 2018

The attention to detail, be it inside or outside, is something that demands attention from the very second you set your eyes on the car. With a base price roughly that of a suburban house, the Bentley promises to pamper its occupants like no other vehicle.

2017 Bentley Flying Spur Features

The 2017 Bentley Flying Spur is offered in 4 trims. The lower specced trims sport a V8 engine while the higher specced trims sport a W12 engine. Power is sent to all 4 wheels as standard. Both the engines comes paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission.

The base trim is called the V8 and starts for a base price of $189,000. The standard list of features includes Bi-xenon headlamps, 8-inch infotainment screen, and signature LED DRLs amongst other features. Then there is the V8 S trim where the engines stats are bumped up to produce 15 hp more than the base variant. The standard list of features includes rear fog and reverse lamp integrated into the lower bumper and keyless entry with button start.

Then there is the top end model with the W12 engines. The lower of the two trims is called the W 12 trim as it features the signature W12 engine. The standard list of features includes 2 10 inch screens on the rear of the front seats, on board wifi, bottle coolers and much more. Then there is the top of the line W 12S trim which features bumped up performance stats on the base W12 engine. The standard list of feature includes steel monocoque body, rear touch screen remote control and 17 unique color choices.

Due to the overly expensive price tag, it is only the base V8 model that at least tries to bring value for money into the equation. The engine in itself is sporty enough for the vehicle. The standard list of features include all the practical features that even a millionaire would expect from his car.

2017 Bentley Flying Spur Engine

“With gobs of torque and an all-wheel-drive system that biases engine torque to the rear wheels to improve handling, the Flying Spur promises a relatively sporty driving experience by segment standards. The keyword there is "relatively"; this is an amply sized, heavy sedan after all.”- Edmunds

Engine and Transmission

The Bentley Flying Spur features an eight cylinder V8 motor coupled with an 8-speed gearbox. The motor is good for producing 500 hp and 487 lb-ft torque. The power stats allow the vehicle to cruise at high speeds rather effortlessly without much drama. Since the power goes out to all 4 wheels, there is enough traction to keep the car leveled at all times.

In comparison to rivals, the Bentley is the least powerful car in the segment. The most powerful in the segment is the Audi S8 with 605 hp on tap. The 2nd spot goes out to the Porsche Panamera with 550 hp with the Merc AMG S63 following closely with 577 hp.

Acceleration

Acceleration on the Bentley Flying Spur is rather surprising owing to its overweight nature. The car feels quick off the line and with enough theatricals from the exhaust to keep the driver engaged. The gearbox does a great job of belting down all the power without any wheelspin.

On paper, the Flying Spur is again the slowest car in a 0-60 mph spring taking about 4.3 seconds The fastest in the segment is the Panamera with 3.6 seconds. The 2nd in line is the Audi S8 at 3.7 seconds and then there is S63 AMG with 3.9 seconds.

Ride and Handling

The Bentley Flying Spur is one of the very rare vehicles that allows you to cruise at high speeds while sitting in the lap of luxury. The car feels genuinely fun to drive on open roads but the sheer curb weight of the car does hinder the fun factor to some extent. But, it also allows the vehicle to stay surprisingly flat on the roads. However, when pushed to limit, the old foe understeer does come into play spoiling the otherwise near perfect experience.

Braking

Brakes on the Bentley Flying Spur are actually right amongst the best braking system on a car primarily since it blends and compliment with the overall car so well. The brakes are crisp without being overly vicious. Even when pushed to the floor, the car never feels destabilized at any point

The Bentley Flying Spur is at the bottom of the table as it takes about 167 ft to stop from 70 mph against 153 ft of the segment leader Porsche Panamera Turbo.

2017 Bentley Flying Spur Fuel Economy

As is with all high performance or luxury cars, the Bentley is not exactly a frugal machine to operate. The car only manages to return a paltry 17 mpg combined. Expect the figures to decline further on the higher powered or the bigger engined variants.

On paper with rivals, only the Porsche Panamera manages to offer 20+ mpg combined while all other rivals fall in the same category as the Flying Spur.

2017 Bentley Flying Spur Interior

“If you're into latest whiz-bang technology, the Flying Spur is not for you. Instead, focus on craftsmanship and the get-down-to-driving nature of the cockpit layout. The Flying Spur is one of the few cars left that invite you to just drive rather than fiddle with the in-car electronics.”- Edmunds

Seating and Comfort

Seating and comfort are the true fortes of this Sedan. The car offers comfortable seating for up to 5 occupants that travel in utmost opulence at all times. The legroom on the rear or the front seats is the best in the segment by a fair margin. The seats, draped in expensive materials offer one of the most comfortable surfaces to rest in the business. The second seat legroom on the Bentley at 42.2 inches is miles ahead of what the rivals offer with only the Audi A8 coming close at 38.7 inches. The front legroom of 41.6 inches, however, is close to what the rivals offer.

2017 Bentley Flying Spur Exterior

“There’s an old-world charm and understated elegance to the Flying Spur, but, like Daniel Craig’s James Bond, this ultra-luxury sedan combines that British sophistication with a modern muscularity and masculine attitude. Its wide stance and long, flowing lines are shared with Bentley’s Continental Coupe and Mulsanne flagship, and the result is proper and understated with minimal ornamentation aside from an artful use of bright trim and the brand’s unmistakable horizontal grille.”- Kelley Blue Book

Dimensions and Weight

The Bentley Flying Spur is huge beast of a car from the outside. With a monstrous curb weight of 5329 lbs, it also the heaviest car in the segment by some margin. With an end to end length of 208.6 inches and a width of 78.1 inches, the Bentley is the lengthiest and the widest car in the segment. The close second in terms of length is the S63 AMG with a length of 208.1 inches while the closest car in terms of width is the Audi S8 with a width of 76.7 inches.

2017 Bentley Flying Spur Safety

As is the case with all luxury cars, the Bentley Flying Spur has not been tested by any major crash-testing agencies named NHTSA and IIHS. But, the Flying Spur is a luxury limo that survives on its extravagance factor and even the safety segment falls under the extravagance. The sheet metal used on the car is crisp and the overall structural stability is much beyond the required standard. Otherwise, their area number of active safety feature ready to save you in case of a mishap.

2017 Bentley Flying Spur Competition

Bentley Flying Spur VS Mercedes Benz AMG S63

The Mercedes S class is the flagship vehicle of the German auto giants. The S63 happens when the engineers on Mercedes’s performance division AMG is let loose on a normal S 500. The vehicle features the signature 4Matic all-wheel-drive technology and a throaty exhaust note. The cabin is loaded up to the brim with crazy tech including self-breaking.

The Bentley Flying Spur is certainly stood nowhere near the Merc in terms of on-board tech but it is, however, a much exclusive car as compared to the relatively common and plane jane Mercedes.

Bentley Flying Spur VS Porsche Panamera Turbo

The Porsche Panamera turbo is a car from the Porsche that only that is technically a sports car in the guise of a family vehicle. The car behaves not too different than a 911 and we all know how capable the car is. From the inside, the focus is a little bit on the sporty side but the luxury part is not left too far behind

Overall, the Panamera might be the sportiest of all limos both in terms of performance and looks but it cannot, in its wildest dreams, match the stature and craftsmanship of bespoke Bentley Flying Spur.

Bentley Flying Spur VS Audi S8

Like the Merc S63 Amg, the Audi S8 is the sports version of the flagship A8 sedan. The car looks not too different from the outside but it features of a host of tech including mechanical enhancements that allow it to go much faster around a track than a regular A8. The interior features the same Audi refinement along with a few sporty bits here and there.

Overall, the Audi S8 just another regular car when compared to the Bentley. Whereas the Bentley Flying Spur speaks for itself wherever it goes.

2017 Bentley Flying Spur Final Verdict

The Bentley Flying Spur is more a statement than a limo. When you buy a Bentley you don’t just buy a car, you buy the entire experience of exclusivity and extravagance. The car allows you to cross 200 mph barrier even after weighing as much as it does without breaking into a sweat. Yes, it’s over the top expensive and even impractical, but there is nothing quite like the Flying Spur in the market presently.
