Talking about the trims and feature of the car then it is being offered in two variants the BMW 230i Convertible and the BMW 230i Xdrive Convertible. The lower variant of the car is 230i convertible which is being offered at a price of $38,950 while the 230i Xdrive Convertible is being offered at a price of $40,950.

2017 BMW 2 Series Convertible Engine

8.7/10

"Even the four-cylinder 230i offers acceleration lively enough to satisfy the vast majority of buyers...The smooth-shifting eight-speed automatic transmission performs well, but it’s nice to see BMW still offers the six-speed manual gearbox as a no-cost option for those who prefer a more hands-on driving style."-Edmunds

Engine and Transmission

The BMW 2 Series Convertible Features a 2.0L TwinPower Turbo inline 4-cylinder which was first used in the 90s by the BMW. Although, there are significant changes to the overall system as it wasn't that great then. The engine is delivering you a power of 248hp which is excellent for the engine from its previous variants. Also, the torque generated by the engine is pretty great with 258 lb-ft.

The car may not be as powerful by the performance aspect as its sibling the BMW M2 but it is not even less considering the other aspects of the car. The car only loses to the Porsche 718 Boxster as its engine gives you a power of 300hp which is considerably higher than the BMW 2 Series Convertible.

Besides that, the car manages to outperform its rivals. The car has 8-speed Automatic transmission system. The transmission is common in both the variants so there are no necessary changes in the performance. In this segment, only the Porsche 718 Boxster is selling a manual transmission.

Overall, talking about the performance of the car it is a treat to ride on roads with the kind of power delivery the car gets. You won't be suffering on highways as overtaking becomes very easy with this car. The new and improved engine and the great handling is the reason behind that and it gives ample confidence to rev it without any issues. The car can reach a maximum speed of 160 mph.

Acceleration

The car is quick enough to take you places on time and give you that exhilarating feeling that one should expect from a BMW. BMW 2 Series Convertible can reach a speed of 60 in just 5.6 seconds. Also, it can cover a quarter-mile distance in just 14.6 seconds which is a decent number.

Here also the Porsche 718 Boxster outperforms the car because of the better in comparison. Although, the car for its price is not struggling at the bottom. The moment you keep your feet on the throttle you can feel it roaring on the road.

One thing to note about the car is the emission which is the least in the segment considering its performance. The 2.0L liter that is equipped in the car makes it great and suitable for both highways as well as city rides. Overall, considering the price at which this is being offered I think it stands in a great spot in its segment.

Riding and Handling

The car once driven gives you a feeling that it has been designed more for comfort. The car's handling and the ride quality is not at all aggressive in spite it is opposite. Although, it is justified considering the type of consumers it has been made for. The overall approach to it is quite laid back and it should be.

All thanks to the all-wheel-drive system, the sports M2 suspension, and the variable-ratio steering wheel system this car is as smooth as it can be. In case if you are a cabriolet owner then you will understand about the balanced ride quality I am talking about.

The car is great at corners and gives you confidence enough to take them at a decent speed. Although, the large bumper on the car can create a little bit of uneasiness at times. I would still say that makes up for a big issue or makes any considerable change in the overall ride quality.

Braking

It is a fast car so you need a decent braking system along with it and therefore, the car is equipped with ABS and disc brakes on all 4 tires. The front braking setup on the BMW 2 Series Convertible is 12.3 inches while the rear brake is of 11.4 inches.

2017 BMW 2 Series Convertible Fuel Economy

7.6/10

It is not really justice for anyone to talk about the fuel efficiency of any car, especially in the performance and luxury segment. The thing about this car is that it is somewhat both. Although, in this segment, the car rises and shines in front of its competitors.

The BMW 2 Series gives you a mileage of 23 miles per gallon in the city because of frequent braking. Although, the figures drastically improves on highways as the fuel economy you get is 34 miles per gallon and also the combined mileage offered is also close to 27 miles. The only car that comes somewhere near this car is the Audi TT Roadster with a combined mileage of 26 miles per gallon.

2017 BMW 2 Series Convertible Interior

7.3/10

"The 2017 BMW 2 Series has seating for four, but its rear seats are best used for very small people or extra storage. Materials are high quality, and the interior’s fit and finish are impressive. BMW interiors are never overly ornate, and the interior of the new BMW 2 Series is simple and elegant. Seat comfort is exceptional as is the driving position. The gauges are clear and concise. Above the center dash sits a high-res color screen that displays navigation, audio and other info. It’s controlled by BMW's now familiar iDrive rotary dial below the gearshift."-KelleyBlueBook

Seating and Comfort

The seating and comfort on this car is something that has been least advertised. Although, it is something that needs to be talked about. The BMW 2 Series Convertible comes equipped with SensaTec upholstery system with fine BMW's Synthetic leather. The leather used on the steering wheel also gives a nice touch.

Talking about the space in the car, the car is ideal for two people who are sitting in the front. It's not a car for the family rather for the special one and you as the back seats cramped enough to give comfort to any adult in the back. Although, if you've got kids then they'll be more than happy in the rear. It was still a decent space for its segment but there are better deals in the segment as per this aspect.

Infotainment System

It is certainly not the best it doesn't disappoint by providing you with all the necessary features as standard. Once you check out the infotainment system on the car you won't be surprised by its offering but the rotary knob provided makes it's very easy to use. The system is quite logical and easy to use.

The infotainment system in terms of performance is quite sharp and responsive. The touchscreen is quite and response to your touch like a decent capacitive smartphone would. The problem that you might find annoying is that it sometimes fails to recognize already paired devices. It is recurring but not something that can be fixed. Below we have provided all the standard as well as optional features that comes with the car:

Standard Features:

  • AUX Input
  • Bluetooth Audio
  • Bluetooth Phone
  • USB
  • Voice Command

Optional Features:

  • Apple CarPlay

Cargo/Trunk Volume

Expecting a decent cargo space from a car that is a compact sedan is foolishness. Most of the space that the cargo trunk could provide is taken by the rooftop that sits at the back. Although, if you would see the car as per its competition then it provides space for a compact sedan.

The car offers a space of 11.8 cubic feet which is way more than all the competition. The Porsche 718 Boxster is the one that comes closest to the competition but even that falls short with 9.7 cubic feet. Overall, with the BMW 2 Series, you won't be disappointed in this segment.

2017 BMW 2 Series Convertible Exterior

9.6/10

"Although we wouldn’t call it the prettiest BMW, we like the muscular proportions of BMW’s 2017 2 Series. This is a very attractive little 2-door, with an aggressive stance, dramatically swept headlights, BMW’s now-signature L-shaped taillights, and a beautifully tapered roofline."-KelleyBlueBook

The car features great curves from front to back with lines running all throughout the body. The ground clearance of the car is also great although the rear end of the car feels lower in comparison.

The most important aspect of the car is its design and the open roof which gives it a premium feel. And, when you have an open roof why close it and that too especially during summers. Overall, if you get this then you need to be ready to take a lot of attention as this one doesn't compromise on the styling.

2017 BMW 2 Series Convertible Safety

8.7/10

The car is equipped with airbags all over the place to protect you in times of collision. You are getting driver airbag, Passenger airbag, front head airbag, rear head airbag, and front side airbag. The BMW 2 Series Convertible also comes with 4 wheel ABS and 4 wheel disc brake as mentioned before but they add substantial protection so worth mentioning again.

Other than that you are also getting Daytime running lights to help you out in increasing your visibility for other riders. It also has brake assist and electronic brake stabilization which decides the amount of braking you need on each tire. The integrated turn signal along with traction control and lane departure warning are something you might want to look at.

The car has not yet been rated by NHTSA and IIHS rating.

2017 BMW 2 Series Convertible Competition

Audi TT Roadster vs BMW 2 series

The best thing I liked about the car was the circulated air controls with integrated knobs to control the temperature and the airflow. The one other thing that I found striking was the fact that you can actually fold the rooftop while driving. The car is great in terms of looking and has a decent interior for the price you pay for it.

The Audi TTS was a successful car so they brought a Roadster variant to it. The car provides you enough power to take down highways at higher speeds while cornering is with ease in this car. Although, it is not that great in terms of its competition. It lacks a lot of features like park assist in the standard. In case if you wish to get those optional features than it might cost you around a Porsche 718 Boxster which is way better.

Mercedes C300 Cabriolet vs BMW 2 series

The first thing that I would like to mention is that it is a looker. The car has elegance, style, and a personality of its own talking about the exteriors. The interiors are also as great as they can be. You can see the refinement in its personality with the synthetic cushioning, the convenient spacing for all your tits & bits, and the air vent. Although, the Audi TT Roadster nails it slightly better.

The car is really good around the corners and has enough power to thrill you on the highways. The car has loads of features so it doesn't disappoint you in that either. The rear seats are congested and are not comfortable for adults in longer rides. Although, the good thing is the rear seats have Isofix. The worst part about the car is that you have to manually bring down a latch in the trunk to bring down the rooftop.

Porsche 718 Boxster vs BMW 2 Series

It is the most expensive in the segment but it is also the best in its segment if talking from an enthusiasts perspective. The car gives you a power of 400 hp because of the great engine that Porsche has fitted inside the hood.

I really don't have words to speak as it is the best and anyone who might be thinking of getting the BMW 2 Series might know. All and all in spite of all the great things the car comes I would say that it is the most expensive car in its segment. As it wins clearly in comparison to the car we are comparing it with.

2017 BMW 2 Series Convertible Final Verdict

I know this is not the best but this is surely the best that comes at this price. The car has ample of things to offer you. It could be the great exterior styling, the decent enough interiors, or the overall performance on the whole.

Yes, there are places where this car lags but then even at the price this car offers a lot. The riding experience of the car is thrilling, the interiors with the SensaTec, the instrument cluster with idrive, all stand at a great position.
