Detailed Review

You have a glance at the 2017 BMW 4 series convertible, and you would assume it to easily be the BMW 4 series Coupe. That is because the BMW has given this car a complete metal roof rather than a cloth. Which in turn shows the richness in designing and styling it possesses. The first glance is enough to say that this car is definitely here to stay and would compete with the likes of the Audi A5 Cabriolet and the Mercedes Benz C300 4MATIC Cabriolet.

Powered with a 2.0 Liter I-4 Intercooled Turbo Premium engine, it generates about 248 hp at 5800rpm and 258 lb-ft at 1400rpm, figures which easily matches its rivals. However, the pickup of this machine and harsh riding quality is something where it lags behind.

With a price starting from $52,300, the BMW is definitely on par with the Mercedes Benz in terms of pricing, while the Audi is a bit cheaper. But this price is fully recovered once to see through the features on offer.

Acceleration

The 8-speed automatic transmission is the best here, with the BMW clocking the best time while going to 60 mph. The acceleration is smooth and gives a tough fight to its competitors in the other departments.

The BMW gets a tough fight from the Mercedes Benz in quarter-mile acceleration. However, it is the BMW which comes out on top yet again.

Handling and Steering

If there is one parameter where the BMW scores over its rivals, it is the drive quality, and the 2017 430i Convertible didn’t disappoint. The steering provides impeccable feel and precision giving you the confidence to push it into a corner – faster and faster.

Braking

The 2017 BMW 4 Series Cabriolet has the brakes which match its acceleration. Despite being one with the heaviest car with a curb weight of 4,211 lbs., the braking results are pretty decent.

The Mercedes Benz is the lightest car amongst the three, and quite expectedly, takes the shortest distance to stop. The Audi is a close second, and while the figures for the BMW are not yet known, it is expected to challenge the other two.

In the 2019 BMW 4 Series coupe and convertible, you’ll find comfortable seating for four, but only if two of the occupants are very small children. -Kelley Blue Book.

Seating and Comfort

The 2017 BMW 430i is a two-row cruiser which accommodates 4 people. It provides heated and cooled seating as well. The passenger rear seats are also electrically powered. The driver’s seat is a bit hard but that shouldn’t be much of an issue.

2017 BMW 4 Series Convertible Fuel Economy

7.7/10

Being the heaviest amongst the three, it is naturally expected for the BMW to give pretty ordinary figures, but the BMW does surprise us here. With a city mpg of 22 and that of 32 on the highway, the BMW does better than the rivals, though not by much a difference.

2017 BMW 4 Series Convertible Competition

Audi A5 Cabriolet

The BMW offers far more engaging driving experience than the Audi A5 which may feel a bit cold. The Audi does have a bigger trunk, a better braking, and slightly more comfortable but that’s not so important for a convertible. The Audi A5 costs less than the BMW 4-Series though.

Mercedes-Benz C300 4MATIC

The fight between the BMW and the Mercedes-Benz goes right down to the wire. Both generate almost equal figures in the engine capacity and the fuel economy. The cargo capacity is also almost equal.

While the BMW 4 Series offers an engaging driving experience, the Mercedes C300 Cabriolet prioritizes comfort over performance. So it’s down to the individual preference.

2017 BMW 4 Series Convertible Final Verdict

The BMW 4 Series Cabriolet offers the comfort of a grand tourer, the wind in your hair experience of a cabriolet, and the driving experience of a classic BMW. So, it’s an easy to recommend this car. However, if you are after a convertible that absolutely cocoons you, go for the Mercedes C300 Cabriolet. Plus, the Mercedes has that classy rag-top that will sound lovely when it rains.
