Detailed Review

German luxury automakers are as of now the experts of making new niche out of conventional body styles. The 2018 BMW 4 series Gran Coupe is based on the 3 series sedan which offers an uncommon mix of coupe-like styling, four-door adaptability and the innate utility of hatchback. Luckily, the end result is visually and dynamically appealing. Its signature kidney grille and attractive body lines make it an undeniably beautiful car to look at.

Powered by your choice of turbocharged engine, either a sweet 248-hp 2.0-liter inline-four or a raucous 320-hp 3.0-liter inline-six, both mated up to an eight-speed automatic and rear-wheel drive. BMW's typically fantastic balance of a comfortable ride and stable handling is tantalizing. The interior design of 4-Series Gran Coupe follows the corporate design style found in the rest of the 3 and 4-Series range, fit and finish of the materials is impeccable and the controls and buttons feel solid and well made too.

We Recommend

The more affordable 430i is peppy and smooth though paying some bucks extra for the sweet six-cylinder turbocharged engine of 440i will be worth it. The effect on the fuel economy is minimal but the extra punch it adds makes bimmer more fun to drive.

2018 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe Engine

8.6/10
Well dressed and capable, but no Ultimate Driving Machine”- Caranddriver

The 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine of the 430i Gran Coupe provides enough grunt for city jaunts and passing highway traffic with ease. It doles out 248 hp @5200 rpm and 258 ft-lbs of torque @1450 rpm. With its 320 hp output, the BMW 440i is surely much quicker. Lightweight and smooth-running, it incorporates BMW's award-winning High Precision Direct Injection, Valvetronic and double-VANOS technologies.

Both the engines deliver strong performance and emit a muted exhaust note that’s appropriate for the Gran Coupe’s sporty appearance. The only available transmission is 8-speed automatic which shifts with composure. You can have the choice of rear- or all-wheel-drive setups.

The Audi A5 and the AMG E 300 both manage to deliver a higher level of driver involvement and substantially more feedback from the road through their communicative helms. The Jaguar lags behind in terms of power delivery and dynamism.

Acceleration

Wearing a 430i badge on the rear, the acceleration is acceptable but not brisk due to the heavy load it had to bear. The BMW 430i takes 6.3 seconds to reach from 0 to 60 and 13.9 seconds to cover the quarter mile mark. With its 320-hp turbocharged inline-six, the 440i would surely prove to be much faster to lure enthusiast and it takes 5.8 seconds to dash from 0 to 60.

All the rivals are similar in sprinting from fro standstill as the displacements are equivalent.

Ride and Handling

Like its other conventional sedan and coupe kin, the Gran Coupe feels sharp and responsive in the driver's seat. The BMW 430i is easy to drive in traffic with a decent amount of torque off the line still the throttle is a bit lazy at the onset. The standard suspension and stiff 500 tread wear tires are biased towards comfort, however, this setup still accommodates noteworthy handling with a smooth ride. Sport and Sport+ are firmer which feels out of character for a GT car like this. xDrive works in tandem with Dynamic Stability Control to monitor road conditions however, you will still feel sharp impacts.

The BMW 4-series’ steering is well weighted and reasonably accurate but isn’t consistently engaging. Driving pleasure suffers, as a result, All modes have a good return to center and the heavy steering wheel feels good in your hands. While not as athletic as its looks or heritage would have you believe, the 4-Series Gran Coupe can still hold its own when pushed hard down a winding road. Ride comfort is okay, but it isn’t as supple as expected from a car that offers only a mediocre amount of athleticism.

 Braking

The brakes are great in both in both everyday traffic and in an emergency stop, they are predictable and consistent Pedal travel is small and feels responsive yet the hefty curb weight can be felt on the corners as the tires squeals. The stopping distance is average for the segment.

2018 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe Fuel Economy

7.4/10

The turbocharged engine of 4 series Gran Coupe blends performance with economy. The V6 is surprisingly efficient and opting for rear-wheel drive increases the highway fuel estimates by 1 MPG in both the 430i and 440i.

The Gran Coupe is highly fueled efficient and proves lighter on your pocket. While the Audi A5 return similar figures as the latter, the AMG E 300 and Jaguar XE 25t gives 25 and 24 MPG combined.

2018 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe Interior

7.5/10

Much like on the outside, the interior of the Gran Coupe is an exceptional mix of energetic and elegance. From the driver-focused cockpit and the inside stack controls marginally to one side, puts all buttons right where they ought to be. Rear visibility is especially low, though, and the sloping rear roof forces you to duck down when piling into the back seat. Flawless leather upholstery with contrast sewing makes inside of the Gran Coupe an ordeal to appreciate.

The 4-series Gran Coupe exceeds its adversaries on the extravagance front—and it accompanies BMW's signature, new-car fragrance. BMW added electroplated detailing, new chrome trim, a center console in high-gloss black, and double stitching on the dashboard. The materials utilized all through the lodge look and feel upscale. The Nappa leather front seats are comfortable with lumbar support and there's plenty of legroom, both front, and rear, for an average-size adult, which is typical for the class.

2018 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe Exterior

8.6/10

With its low center of gravity and effortless, swooping roofline, the Gran Coupe echoes the eye-catching excellence – and bellicose position – of the Coupe.

A fabulous looking car, the 4-series Gran Coupe pitches itself as a more beautiful option in contrast to a conventional sedan. The fact that its hidden hatchback provides more versatility than a sedan is simply a bonus.

The Gran Coupe is apparently more exquisite in its appearance than the 3-series and consolidates great BMW styling components, for example, the twin kidney-shaped grilles, round LED headlamp with the inner circle flowing toward it and a kinked rear quarter-window line. The front fog lamps are well integrated with the air splitter for a sportier look. Around back, the only noticeable change is the new LED pattern with twin tailpipes looks menacing.

2018 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe Competition

BMW 430i Vs Audi A5 Premium

With the Audi A5, customers can pick between various engines. The lineup incorporates two gasoline units, beginning with a 2.0-liter four-liter producing 190 hp and 236 pound-feet of torque. A similar motor wrenches out 252 steeds and 273 pound-feet in the range-topping model.

In contrast to BMW, Audi additionally offers a performance-oriented rendition. It's known as the S5 Sport back with a 3.0-liter V-6 that wrenches out an astounding 354 steeds and 369 pound-feet of the bend. Both automatic and manual transmissions are accessible, while Quattro all-wheel-drive is optional on all models. The interior of the Audi A5 is understated and well laid than the Gran Coupe.

BMW 430i Vs Mercedes-Benz E300 AMG

The 2018 Mercedes E-Class is the 10th-generation model of the esteemed nameplate, offering an exquisitely crafted design, a high-end interior, and excellent performance. As of now, the AMG E 300 is a gorgeous, vehicle. The new 9-speed transmission in the E-Class is paired with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, which generates 241 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque.

Further enhancing the performance of the E-Class is its standard steel-spring suspension, which offers agile driving pleasure on twisting roads as well as the highest level of ride comfort than the 4 series Gran Coupe. The interior of Merc has an edge over the Gran Coupe with state of the art equipment.

BMW 430i Vs Jaguar XE 25T

The XE’s handsome and subtle design is ideal for the individuals who would prefer not to be ostentatious. In the wake of propelling the XE for 2017, Jaguar made huge changes in accordance with the lineup for 2018, featured by new powertrains, more element rich trims, and more extensive accessibility of all-wheel drive. The model’s rarity also gives it a cool factor, and its ability to eat corners is fun, even if the engine isn’t thrilling. The interior is Plainly-styled and most safety tech locked up in added-cost options. The exterior of the bimmer is much handsome than the Jaguar and it has got a peppy powertrain.

2018 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe Final Verdict

The 4 Series Gran Coupe, though, offers the best combination of traits in the segment. Attractive lines, athletic handling, and clever packaging, thanks to its hatchback inspired rear fascia, makes it an all-rounder. While not as fast as its looks the 4-series Gran Coupe can still hold its own when pushed hard down a winding road.
