BMW is famous for its reliability, comfort, luxury, and performance which can be found in most of its cars. The 5 Series is a midsize luxury sedan that competes against some of the biggest market leaders. However, the competition is mostly one-sided in favor of the BMW 5 Series as it offers great performance and fuel efficiency. The spacious cabin along with the advanced features included in the overall system allows the BMW sedan to justify its luxury status. At the same time, the safety aspects of the model make sure that it has all the necessary features and is reliable enough for the passengers.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

The BMW 5 Series sedan is a great addition as the demand for midsize luxury is high in the market but that is not the only great thing about the car. The BMW sedan has great stability and has got good off-road and towing capabilities. The spacious cabin and the level of comfort are unmatched and the different trims and packages add value to the vehicle in every form. There have not been many changes in the 2023 BMW 5 Series but the existing features and systems in the car are sufficient for an owner to go for long rides without worrying about performance, safety, or any type of wearing issues. The infotainment and the BMW Connected Services are unique additions to the luxury features of the car. However, the 2023 BMW 5 Series faces tough competition from the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, the Volvo S90, and the Alfa Romeo Giulia.

Features

The 2023 BMW 5 Series Sedan has several trims which might be advantageous for some people or can confuse many of them with the different features and characteristics. The two base versions are the 530i and 540i but each of them has an xDrive version with a few different features. The BMW 5 Series also has the 530e version, an electric one, and the M550i version, both of which are considered separate models. The 2023 BMW 530i, 530i xDrive, 540i, and 540i xDrive are discussed here considering the 530i to be the base model of the 5 Series Sedan.

Each of the four trims of the 2023 BMW midsize luxury sedan has different price tags but the main difference between the 530i and the 540i is that the former has a 4 cylinder engine while the latter is equipped with a 6 cylinder one. The 2023 BMW 530i engine has 16 valves with a power output of 248 HP compared to the 24-valve engine with a power output of 335 HP in the 540i trim. Most of the other important features and aspects are the same in the four trims except the xDrive trims from both the 530i and 540i versions come with an AWD drivetrain instead of the basic RWD.

Packages

Similar to the trims for the 2023 BMW 5 Series Sedan there are multiple packages that can add some significant features for additional costs. There are three packages available for the BMW luxury sedan from 2023 and they are compatible with all four of the trims.

Convenience Package

  • Heated front seats (upgrade available for rear seats)
  • Power tailgate
  • Costs $600

Premium Package

  • Heated front seats (upgrade available for rear seats)
  • Head-up display
  • Remote engine start
  • Power tailgate
  • Harman Kardon surround audio system
  • Costs 2,250

Executive Package

  • Heated front seats (upgrade available for rear seats)
  • Head-up display
  • Remote engine start
  • Ceramic controls
  • Power tailgate
  • Power rear sunshade and rear side window shade
  • Harman Kardon surround audio system
  • Costs 3,150

We Recommend

All the trims for the 2023 BMW 5 Series are good bargains for any customers and their price tags are justifiable against the features they offer. However, the BMW 540i trim is recommended here as it has a 6-cylinder and 24-valve engine that generates better torque and power. One can opt for the xDrive trim for the AWD drivetrain but the added cost does not seem very advantageous. The three packages can be beneficial but one can go with the Premium package to include most of the necessary upgrades in the BMW midsize sedan.

Release Date

The exact release date for the 2023 BMW 5 Series has not been declared on the official website or via any other official sources.

Engine and Performance

The 2023 BMW 5 Series Sedan is equipped with a 2.0-liter BMW TwinPower Turbo inline 4-cylinder, 16-valve engine. The midsize luxury sedan from BMW has the ability to generate 248 HP and the torque of the engine is 257 lb-ft. There are two modes in the 8-speed automatic transmission - the sport mode and the manual shift mode to ensure better performance in different situations. The acceleration for 0 to 60 MPH takes 5.9 seconds which is a standard figure and the same can be said for the quarter mile duration of 13.8 seconds.

The BMW 5 Series, specifically the 2023 version has a maximum speed of 130 MPH which is similar to many of the competitors in the market. All the primary rivals have similar engine strength and most of the cars are offered at similar prices making it much more competitive. The Volvo S90 and the Alfa Romeo Giulia have better power output and higher torque than the BMW luxury sedan and the 2023 Giulia has a much higher top speed as well. The overall performance in the engine segment does not look too impressive for the 2023 BMW 5 Series but the figures are of good caliber and are able to serve the purpose of the owners.

Ride and Handling

The BMW 5 Series from 2023 offers an excellent ride and handling experience for the driver and the passengers. The luxury sedan has great stability and is supported by the systems like Dynamic Stability Control and dynamic traction control. The double-wishbone multi-link aluminum-made suspensions in the front and the integral-V multi-link in the rear provide a smooth ride even on cragged surfaces. The twin-tube gas-pressure shock absorbers are a good complement to the suspensions and rarely allow the passengers to feel the roughness of the roads. The electric power steering coupled with Servotronic power-steering assist enables the driver to have more control while traveling long and difficult roadways.

Braking Performance

The braking system of the BMW midsize luxury SUV is made to counter its high acceleration and excellent torque. The 4-wheel ventilated disc brakes with the anti-lock braking system and Dynamic Brake Control help to stabilize the car while braking from a high speed. The Cornering Brake Control coupled with composite front rotors ensures dynamic control for the driver. Small but significant features like Brake Stand-by, Brake Drying, and Brake Fade Compensation make the overall braking system and performance of the BMW 5 Series very reliable and allow a quicker response.

The stats regarding brake rotors of the BMW 5 Series are unavailable at this moment which concludes that the Volvo comes with the largest rotors in the front. The rear brake rotors are almost similar for the Alfa Romeo and the Volvo whereas the E Class is equipped with comparatively smaller rotors in both cases. However, it is worth mentioning that the Volvo S90 has the highest curb weight among the competitors while the Alfa Romeo Giulia has the lowest figure. It is safe to assume that the latter has a better braking efficiency than the Volvo in this case.

Fuel Economy

The 2023 BMW 5 Series overshadows its engine performance with its efficiency in fuel economy. The luxury sedan from BMW has great mileage in the city with 25 MPG as well as on the highways with 33 MPG according to EPA-certified ratings. The combined mileage is 28 MPG and it is better than all the primary competitors in the market. BMW 5 Series from 2023 has a fuel capacity of 18.0 gallons to complement its higher mileage and it edges over its rival in this segment as well.

The BMW dominates the fuel economy segment with highest figures in all the sections. The primary rivals although have almost parallel stats the 5 Series sedan has a slight advantage in both city and highways. Only the Alfa Romeo is capable of matching the EPA-certified fuel economy on the highway. The larger fuel capacity allows BMW to ensure a much better range compared to others. The Alfa Romeo, despite having good mileage, falls behind due to its smaller fuel tank and offers an uninspiring range. The Mercedes-Benz has a considerable fuel capacity but ends up at the bottom for offering the lowest range.

Interior

The interior of the BMW 5 Series is arguably one of the most stylish among the competitors. Firstly, the overall interior comes with several internal trims like Fineline Ridge Wood Trim, Perforated SensaTec, and Anthracite Headliner - all of which are available for the four basic car trims of the midsize luxury sedan. There is a luxury vibe inside the midsize BMW and the high-quality materials make the passengers feel like they are using the premium options even in the base trims. The standard leather seats come in three variants: Canberra Beige, Black Perforated, and Cognac Perforated. The owners can choose any of the comfort and style features from either the Dakota leather upholstery or any variants of the Nappa leather upholstery.

The head, shoulder, and legroom around the front and rear seats are considerably better than the rivals. Only the Mercedes-Benz has a slight advantage in the second-row shoulder space. All these dimensions in both the first and second rows are higher than the primary competitors making it more spacious and comfortable. The trunk capacity of the 2023 BMW sedan is 18.7 cu-ft which is quite larger than that of the rivals. Bigger space and comfortable aspects make the BMW 5 Series all the more attractive for the owners.

The BMW sedan comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility and the Remote Software Upgrade is a great standard facility. The aspects of real-time traffic information coupled with on-street parking information allow the driver to travel without worries.

Some of the key features in the infotainment are -

  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility
  • SiriusXM with a one-year subscription
  • Real-Time Traffic Information and On-Street Parking Information
  • Intelligent Personal Assistant voice control
  • Capable of Remote Software Upgrade

Exterior

The BMW 5 Series comes with various exterior features that help the sedans to stand out through style and boldness. The 18" W-spoke reflex silver wheels combined with all-season run-flat tires give the BMW midsize sedan a perfect look. The Chrome-line exterior trim and the trapezoidal exhaust tips add more style to the exterior. Non-metallic paint options are attractive and the Power-folding heated side mirrors are great additions to the exterior of the BMW luxury sedan from 2023. The overall size of the car is standard for a midsize sedan but the curb weight of the 2023 BMW 5 Series is 3,783 lbs which is lower than most in the competition. In terms of style and boldness, the BMW 5 Series definitely ranks among the top in the market.

The Mercedes-Benz sits lowest to the ground with a clearance of only 4.3 inches. The wheelbase of the 5 Series sedan is 117.1 inches and only the Volvo has a longer wheelbase. Most of the competitors have almost similar aspects except the Volvo S90 which has higher dimensions in most cases and also has the highest curb weight among all the competitors. However,

Safety

The 2023 BMW 5 Series has not been tested by either NHTSA or IIHS which makes it impossible to provide any reliable safety ratings for the sedan. However, the last tested car from the BMW 5 Series was from the year 2021 and it received impressive ratings in crash tests from IIHS-HLDI. Since there are minimal changes made to the BMW 5 series, it is expected that the luxury sedan is still one of the safest in the current scenario. Moreover, the several built-in safety features might be enough for a customer to opt for this model.

  • HD surround camera
  • Forward collision warning
  • Adaptive Full LED Headlights
  • Front and rear Head Protection System
  • Dual-threshold and dual-stage deployment for airbag supplemental restraint system in the front row
  • 3-point safety belts with head restraints
  • Seat-mounted front side-impact airbags
  • LATCH attachments for child-restraint safety
  • BMW Assist eCall includes Emergency SOS button
  • Brake-pad Wear Indicators

Competition

2023 BMW 5 Series vs.2023 Mercedes-Benz E Class

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz E Class is one of the fiercest rivals in terms of price, specs, and features. The overall performance of the Mercedes-Benz midsize luxury sedan is impressive and the riding is comfortable as well. The E class has several options for customization and multiple features to improve the handling and safety of the vehicle. The practicality and reliability of the Mercedes-Benz are the most important aspects of the 2023 sedan and all of this makes it a great car to go for when it comes to choosing among the midsize luxury sedans in the market. However, it does not mean that it is a better car than the BMW 5 series but it is actually the perspectives and preferences of the buyers that make the decision.

2023 BMW 5 Series vs. 2023 Volvo S90

There are various potent competitors when it comes to midsize luxury sedans but the 2023 Volvo S90 is among the top that stands out. It is the flagship car from the brand and is orchestrated with elegance, refinement, and luxury. The 4-cylinder turbocharged engine provides as good a performance as any and it has many attractive features to go with it. The competitive pricing and exciting designs in the interior and exterior make the Volvo one of the top picks. The primary rival of the BMW 5 Series has many aspects to gain an edge in the market but it lacks in space and overall performance. It is a great car despite its shortcomings and can be considered as a possible alternative as well.

2023 BMW 5 Series vs. 2022 Alfa Romeo Giulia

The 2022 Alfa Romeo Giulia has some of the greatest features included in the car and it definitely helps the car to rank among the top luxury midsize sedans in the current scenario. The powerful engine and agile handling make the Alfa Romeo a considerable option and its sleek interior design accurately portrays the desired style of the enthusiasts. Multiple comfort options and the premium infotainment system improve the attractiveness and the lower price tag makes it all the more desirable for buyers. However, it does not mean that the Alfa Romeo Giulia is a better choice than the BMW 5 Series, in fact, many people might go for the BMW luxury sedan despite the higher pricing.

Final Verdict

The 2023 BMW 5 Series is arguably the best midsize luxury sedan in the market and the price of the vehicle is justified. There are some interesting trims and a few excellent packages to opt from, each of which offers significant improvements for the car. The engine performance and the braking capabilities are superb while the interior of the car is unparalleled. The style and comfort for the passengers and the riding experience of the 2023 BMW luxury sedan make it highly desirable among buyers. The exclusive infotainment system and the bold exterior are great additions but the space available inside the car is simply the largest among the rivals. There are some prominent competitors in the market with a lot of attractive features and aspects but the competitive pricing along with the reliability of BMW make the 5 Series sedan a great choice.
