The Bmw 530e I performance is significantly priced higher than rivals and it's almost 50 hp advantage. The Lexus ES 300h, Lincoln MKZ, and Toyota Avalon produces a similar amount of power but the MKZ has the lowest amount of torque.

Acceleration

The hybrid powertrain doesn't disappoint you and the 530 e is as quick as the 530 I . BMW 530i performance sprints from 0 to 60 mph in 6.0 seconds and enable it to reach a top speed of 146 mph. You won't feel as if you have compromised for efficiency as the torque punch is surprising.

The four-cylinder in the 530i is refined and rarely feels pressed, capable of accelerating from zero to sixty in about six seconds. The second spot is taken by Avalon with 6.1 seconds followed by Lincoln MKZ and Lexus ES 300 H.

Ride and Handling

The electro hybrid powertrain of the 530 e I performance has the potential of a conventional sedan. Torque delivery is instantaneous, thanks to its electric powertrain. You will never miss the manual transmission because of the great 8 speed automatic. The bimmer comes loaded with double-wishbone in the front and a multi-link suspension in the rear which absorbs the street undulations well. Optional adaptive dampers will help you to soften the ride.

Auto e drive and Max e drive are the two modes which help you program the mapping for different powertrain for maximum efficiency. BATTERY CONTROL mode lets the driver set the charge level for the high-voltage battery manually, allowing that proportion of the battery's capacity to be reserved for all-electric driving at a later point in the journey.

There are four driving modes-Sport, Comfort and Eco Pro let you to alter power delivery, transmission setting, and suspension setup according to your preference. You feel the extra weight of the battery when cornering at high speed. The steering is slow and it takes a while for weight transfer. There is a dead center but the overall experience is acceptable for a luxury car.

Braking

The 530e I performance is equipped with ventilated disc brakes and composite front rotors and Dynamic Brake Control (DBC). Braking is consistent and straight lines tops are confident. The pedal travel is small the brakes are easy to modulate around corners.

The competition is better in braking than the BMW, although just by a little margin. The 530e is the heaviest car here, and although the weight doesn't affect the performance much. The Lincoln MKZ and Toyota Avalon have similar performance.

2019 BMW 5 Series plug-in hybrid Sedan Fuel Economy

The 530e with its electro hybrid powertrain is rated to deliver 28 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway. Even the all-wheel-drive deliver similar mpg as the RWD variant.

The 530e will travel about 30 miles on electric power alone at speeds up to 87 mph. But it's a hybrid, so the total range is about 400 miles and the battery can be recharged using the 7.2 kW onboard charger.

The BMW 5 series takes the last spot when it comes to fuel efficiency because of the higher output and curb weight. All of the rivals deliver better fuel economy which is up to 40 mpg combined.

2019 BMW 5 Series plug-in hybrid Sedan Interior

"With new engine choices for 2018, the BMW 5 Series should be even more enticing if you're shopping for a midsize luxury sedan. Whether it's the latest in technology and safety or just a comfortable and luxurious interior you're after, the perennially popular 5 Series is sure to satisfy- Edmunds

Seating and Comfort

Much like the sporty exterior, the cabin is an exceptional combination of upscale material and elegance. The driver focused cabin put all the controls where they are ought to. Tasteful use of chrome to accentuate details, ambient carpet lighting, and futuristically designed dashboard makes the 5 series truly desirable.

The BMW 530 e I performance comes with 16 way power adjustable seats, the ergonomics are just right and the quality of the materials is absolutely appropriate for such a high-class car.

The BMW 5 series has the most spacious seats because of the larger dimensions. The front seat space, however, is quite generous in all the rivals and even the rear seats are quite good.

Interior Features

  • 40/20/40 split fold-down through-load rear seats

  • Fineline Ridge Wood interior trim
  • Anthracite headliner

Infotainment

BMW has never left a chance in experimenting with their technological features. That is the reason why all their productions have always been abundant in latest technological features. Now the iDrive infotainment system is one such feature that has been made passenger-friendly by continuously experimenting on it. The 2019 BMW 5 series comes installed with this latest iDrive infotainment system. Moreover now the Apple Carplay comes standard on all the trims. Some of the other infotainment features are:

  • Anti-theft AM/FM in-dash stereo CD/MP3 player with Radio Data System (RDS)
  • HiFi Sound System with 12 speakers and 205-watt digital amplifier
  • HD Radio with "multicast" FM station reception
  • Pre-wiring for SiriusXM Satellite Radio Tuner

"The BMW 5 Series midsize-luxury sedan entered its seventh generation just last year as an all-new model, boasting evolved driving manners, premium accouterments and the stately style that have made it the automotive prize of executives for decades- kellybluebook

Dimension and Weight

For 2019, the 5 series got more aerodynamic with a sharper front fascia and bigger kidney grille. You also get active aero shutters that open or close for maximum thermal efficiency. A series of visual highlights is the only exterior difference between the 5 series and 5 series hybrid. The sides are now tapered with chiseled body lines running across the sides. The 5 series does resemble 7 series but with its own styling cues like sharper door creases and chromed exhaust ports.

2019 BMW 5 Series plug-in hybrid Sedan Competition

Lexus ES 300h

The Lexus ES 300h is priced significantly lower than the BMW 530 e performance but there are some downsides too. The BMW 530e performance has a better power delivery than the ES 300h. The rear seats don't fold flat like the 5 series sedan for added cargo space. The infotainment system is arguably better in the BMW. The overall performance of the ES 300 h feels timid when compared to the 5 series sedan.

Lincoln MKZ

The Lincoln MKZ comes equipped with a 2.0 liter four cylinder engine which works in conjunction with an electric motor to produce 188 hp of total output. You don't get all-wheel as an option which is available with the 5 series hybrid. The MKZ's fuel-sipping powertrain has an advantage over the 5 series powertrain.

Toyota Avalon

The Avalon hybrid comes with a 215 hp four-cylinder engine and CVT transmission. You get an outstanding mileage of 43 mpg on the highway which is subsequently more than the 5 series sedan. The engine feels a little weak compared with the 530e I performance sedan. The infotainment of the German luxury sedan is far better when contrasted with the Avalon. In terms of value the Avalon is better otherwise luxe-hungry peeps should go with the 530e I performance.

2019 BMW 5 Series plug-in hybrid Sedan Final Verdict

The 530e I performance is a superb sedan with a fuel-efficient hybrid powertrain and a slick shifting 8 speed automatic transmission. The battery pack does increase the weight and makes it less agile but it is a scenario with every other PHEV. It seems a complete bargain with more peak torque and high quality cabin. Certainly the 5 series is among the best cars you can have.
