Detailed Review

You want a sportiest BMW, going with the BMW 6 Series is your only option, unless you want a big V12 heavy luxury car which won't feel sporty. While the 3-series is a pretty good option if you want something from BMW at beginners level. 6-Series will only level up the experience than the other lower end BMW. And if you plan to go out in summer and want to feel the wind in you head in a powerful BMW, they have the 6-Series Convertible.

This year's BMW 6-series is powered by a straight 6-cylinder twin turbo engine churning out 315 horse power. This big engine block helps the 6 to do a 0 to 60 in 4.9 seconds, obviously with the roof top closed for aerodynamic reasons. We like the 6-series convertible because of the fact that it is more comfortable than its competition car, Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet. It may not look much different from the previous model but experts says this is much better car now. Subtle body tweaks hide what is a much better car. Now it is more enjoyable to drive, relatively efficient and a nicely-equipped interior. In general, the convertible actually suits the 6 Series' driving style better than the coupe.

With sleek design language the 6-series certainly looks good. You will sure catch few eyes when you roll down in the streets with your roof-down. This year BMW has bought just a minor facelift to this car. Which only have made every sense of German fashion in this car a little better. Starting from $85,000 and goes all the way up to $100,000 excluding the optional features available. This sure is a luxurious one.

We Recommend:

After going through the features provided by the trim levels, we would recommend the 640i xDrive trim as it is available with most of the standard features. Priced at just $3K more than the base trim, the 640i xDrive is a smart pick among the available options.

“The 6-Series is confidently powered at every stop, but our goldilocks principle pegs the V-8 as the best pick of the bunch.”- thecarconnection

Engine and Transmission

Powered by a 3.0L straight-six engine is the basic you get in this model which produces the power of 315 horses to push this car. If that seems underpowered, you can go up a trim to get a 4.4L V8 engine producing 445HP. A few grand more to get 100 extra horses for your BMW.

Transmission is the standard 8-speed automatic transmission with paddle shift. Pretty normal in high-end cars these days, to help you with quick and efficient gear shifting if you ever planned it to take to the track.

There is no denying that the BMW 6 Series Cabriolet is a big and heavy car, but surprisingly it still manages to do the 0-60 mph in 4.9 seconds. Now tell me if that isn’t quick. All this helps it to cover a quarter mile of distance in just 13.6 seconds.

Braking and Handling

As we have been telling that this year’s 6-series is a little bit better in performance. It sticks better in corners now. Lighter front end and hi-revving nature of the 6-series cars make them fun to drive.

Fuel economy is the same as its rivals. Good thing is that if it is not better than the competition, it is not bad either, So you can eliminate this aspect while deciding which car to buy.

2017 BMW 6 Series Convertible Interior

8.0/10
“Most passengers will find that the interior space of the 6-Series is generally good, although taller people may find that they need to duck on entry and exit thanks to the low, sensuous roof lines.” - thecarconnection

Seating and Comfort

BMW’s 6 Series cars are luxurious and comfortable. Where Porsche’s Carrera Cabriolet is a 2+2 car, i.e. rear two seats are not practically usable for sitting. The BMW’s 6 Series is a proper 2 door, 4 seat car with enough sitting space for all four.

You get enough leg room in your BMW 6 series, even more than what Mercedes offer for its E400. Thanks to the bit long dimensions of the 6 Series. Neither the headroom is the problem for the BMW. It let everyone sit comfortably in the car. Ideal for long drives.

Interior Feature

Your BMW 6 Series convertible is full of features even on the inside of the car.

  • 14-way power driver and passenger seat
  • Bucket front seats
  • Multi-level heating driver and passenger seats
  • Pass-thru center armrest
  • One-touch power window
  • Hands-free entry
  • Keyless ignition
  • Electric power steering
  • Leather Steering wheel
  • Climate control
  • Extended cabin heating/cooling

Infotainment

You get an amazing infotainment setup in this car paired with the Harman/Kardon Speakers.

  • 12 Months of provided Satellite radio service
  • 12 total speakers
  • 2 Subwoofers
  • 600 Watts stereo output
  • Harman/kardon Premium Brand Speakers
  • USB Connection
  • Auxiliary Audio Input
  • Speed Sensitive Volume Control
  • Video Monitor
  • AM/FM Stereo

Cargo Volume

Having the dimensions of the 6-Series slightly larger than the competition does help in the cargo volume. although it is not some groundbreaking space. All you get is 10.6 ft.3 of cargo space in this car. But when compared to its competition, it is more than what others offer. So I’d say it is a win for the BMW here.

“ recently redesigned nose on the 2017 BMW 6 Series is subtly effective, with the number of vertical bars in each "kidney" now nine instead of 10. The rear end looks menacing when viewed head-on, which is just as it should be.”- Kelley Blue Book

Dimension and Weight

The BMW 6 Series Convertible is bigger and heavier than other cars. Weights 200 lbs. more than the E400 and almost 1000 lbs. more than the Porsche. It is even longer than the other two, beating Mercedes by 8 inches and Porsche by 16 inches. And in width is it 4 inches wider than the Mercedes and 3 inches wider than the Porsche. Although all the rivals cars have the same ground clearance.

2017 BMW 6 Series Convertible Competition

BMW 6 Series Convertible VS Mercedes Benz E400 Cabriolet

Comparing the Mercedes Benz’s E400 Cabriolet with the BMW 6 Series convertible, it is a difficult one. Both cars are state of luxury. Both come with all leather interior, convertible rooftop, great sitting spacing and comfort, fun driving experience. While the E400 might seem powerful in the paper, both perform essentially similar. Although BMW seems a bit quicker than the Benz. So it really comes down to the brand preference while choosing between the two.

BMW 6 Series Convertible VS Porsche Carrera Cabriolet

When comparing the Porsche with the BMW, Porsche is small, powerful, quicker than the BMW. It is more of a sports car. It’s costlier but not ideal for long trips. Go for the Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet if you want to have some fun of the track, for long trips, it is going to give you pain in the knee.

2017 BMW 6 Series Convertible Final Verdict

The BMW 6 Series has a taste of the luxury with the sprinkle of fun around the track. It is a good choice if you want the fun car and a summer car for your family at the same time. The 6 Series will not disappoint you. It looks good, it drives fun and it feels luxurious. But I recommend you go for the M6 if you really want that sheer driving pleasure. But that might cost you double of what you will pay for a regular 6 Series convertible. The choice is yours to make.
