2018 BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo Hatchback Engine

"Displacing only 3.0 liters but force-fed by a turbocharger and burning fuel sprayed directly into the six cylinders and mixed with air entering past the variable-timed valves, this inline engine is spectacularly unspectacular" -Caranddriver.com

The BMW 6-Series Gran Turismo is powered by a 3.0L TwinPower Turbo inline 6-cylinder engine. The engine produces a power output of 335 HP and a torque figure of 332 lb-ft. The engine is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. The car is seamless to drive as there is a lot of torque available even in the mid-range.

The Mercedes CLS features a 4.7L Biturbo V8 engine that produces a maximum power output of 402 HP. However, this is a much larger engine, both in terms of displacement and the number of cylinders. The Porsche Panamera and Audi A7, both feature a six-cylinder engine with power outputs of 330 hp and 340 hp respectively.

The BMW 6-Series Gran Turismo has the xDrive system that transfers the power to all four wheels based on the traction available at each wheel for maximum acceleration. The 6-series Gran Turismo hits the 0 - 60 mph in just 5.1 seconds and does the quarter mile in 14.1 seconds. The Gran Turismo is 0.2 sec faster than the 2013 BMW 640i Gran Coupe M Sport.

The Mercedes CLS is quicker than the BMW 6-Series Gran Turismo by almost 0.2 seconds. The CLS hits 0 - 60 mph in just 4.9 sec whereas the Gran Turismo takes 5.1 sec to achieve it. The Audi A7 and Porsche Panamera are not far behind either. The A7 does the 0 - 60 mph in 5.2 seconds whereas the Panamera takes 5.4 sec.

Ride and Handling

The BMW 6-Series Gran Turismo is effortless to drive. It is more of a driver-focused car as opposed to the Mercedes, which focuses more on passenger comfort and luxury. However, this does not mean that the car is not comfortable for passengers. BMW makes use of air suspension to adjust the ride height and change stiffness of suspension.

The car has a bit of body roll in the comfort plus mode. However, this is not so evident in the comfort mode. In the comfort mode, the car handles almost every uneven surfaces and potholes efficiently. Switch into the sports mode and the suspension stiffens up.

The BMW 6-series Gran Turismo weighs almost 4400 lbs. and yet it comes to a halt from 60 mph in 106 ft. The brakes on the Gran Turismo been designed by BMW sports performance division M Sport. The 4 piston aluminum calipers along with 13.7-inch disc on the front and 13.6-inch disc work together to stop the 4409 lbs. machine.

Though the BMW 6-Series Gran Turismo has an impressive brake, it doesn't have the shortest stopping distance. It is the Mercedes CLS that has the least stopping distance. This is made possible due to the larger discs and reduced weight of the CLS. The Audi A7 also has good brakes but it is the Porsche Panamera whose brakes are poor even with the Panamera being lightest of them all.

2018 BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo Hatchback Fuel Economy

The BMW 6-series Gran Turismo delivers 19 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway. Together, the Gran  Turismo delivers 22 mpg on average.

In terms of fuel efficiency, it is the Porsche Panamera that has the highest fuel efficiency figures. The Panamera delivers a combined mileage of 29 mpg. The Audi A7 delivers 23 and the BMW 640i Gran Turismo delivers 22 mpg. The CLS has the least fuel efficiency because of its large V8 engine.

2018 BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo Hatchback Competition

BMW 6 Series GT vs. Porsche Panamera

The BMW 640i xDrive Gran Turismo and the Porsche Panamera are driver-focused vehicles. Both these cars have amazing dynamics and are fun to drive. These cars tend to look more into the driving characteristics more rather than comfort and luxury.Having said that, both these cars are comfortable and have a plush luxury interior and come loaded with features. But the BMW is much more affordable and offers more value for money.

BMW 6 Series GT vs. Audi A7

Audi cars are generally luxurious, sporty and fun to drive. The A7 looks almost like a sports car due to its aggressive styling, unlike the 640i xDrive which looks more like a luxury sedan. Both these cars are almost similar in terms of features but the Audi A7 features the Quattro drive system which is better than the xDrive on the BMW.

BMW 6 Series GT vs. Mercedes Benz CLS

Mercedes cars are known for their luxury and comfort. However, the CLS is something that offers not just luxury and comfort, but also solid performance. The 5.2L Biturbo V8 is much more powerful than the twin turbo inline 6 cylinder engine on the BMW. But being a comfort-focused car, the CLS is not as good as the BMW in terms of handling and fun to drive character.

2018 BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo Hatchback Final Verdict

The BMW 640i xDrive Gran Turismo offers the luxury of a BMW luxury sedan and performance of BMW M Sports vehicle. The car uses the renowned inline 6 cylinder engine and has the driving dynamics of an M Sports car. It is comfortable to drive and travel and comes packed with a lot of tech.If you are looking for a car that is agile and luxurious, it is difficult to choose from the A7, CLS, Panamera and 640i GT as all these cars have almost more or less features, except the CLS is a powerful one. If you are looking for performance only, the CLS is the car for you. If you are looking for something that performs well and has good handling, all these cars are good but it is the Audi A7 that offers more for less cost.
